A lot of the social learning for humans was experimented on animals

Bandura stresses that humans are cognitive beings (active information processors)

Humans are more affected by what they THINK will happen as what will actually happen

Bandura thought the behaviourism theory was too simple and tweaked it a bit

Bandura mainly observed aggression in adolescents

Led him to suggest that environment causes behaviour but that behaviour also causes the environment

Theory was called Reciprocal determinism(the world and a person’s behaviour cause one another)

Later he revised and looked at personality as a factor

Effects in behaviour are: environment, behaviour and a person’s psychological processes

Believed children learn best through observational learning or modelling

Got this belief through experimentsMost famous experiment was the “bobo doll

experiment”Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

1. Attention- to learn you must pay attention- anything to make you less attentive will damper your learning- things to affect attention is stimuli

Page 7: Albert Bandura - Nipissing University Word-Press Service | …€¦ · PPT file · Web view · 2013-01-02A lot of the social learning for humans was experimented on animals Bandura

2. Retention- must remember what you paid attention to- language and imagery play an important role here- we store the model’s example in the form of mental images or verbal descriptions- then the viewer can model in their own behaviour

Our ability to imitate improves with practice at the behaviours involved

We improve even when we imagine ourselves to be improving

Ex. Athletes think about their performance prior to performing it and then go through their performance

In a way this resembles self-fulfilling prophecy

Can be used in a negative and positive wayEx. If you are going into a test and you think

you won’t do well, then often you won’t do well. If you feel like you’ll do well then it’s quite often that you will do well on the test too.
