Early Life• Born in November 7, 1913 in French Algeria
(colonized by France in 1830)• Mother was half-deaf and his father died in WWI
in the Battle of Marne• Admitted in the University of Algiers (1923)• Had tuberculosis which then ended his football
career (soccer) so to earn money, he worked in the weather bureau, in an automobile-accessory firm (ships), and was also a private tutor.

• He joined the French Communist Party in 1935 • He joined the activities in of the Algerian People’s
Party which got him denounced from the FCP• Went on to become associated with the anarchist
movement• He wrote for anarchist publications (Le Libertaire)• He supported the uprising in East Germany in 1953.
Also, supported the workers’ uprising in Poznan, Poland and the Hungarian Revolution.
His Marriage Life and Belief
• In 1934, he married Simone Hie but ended quickly• In 1940, he then married Francine Faure, a pianist
and mathematician. They had twins named Catherine and Jean.
• He did love her but was against the institution of marriage and saying that it is unnatural.
• He had affairs with her which included with Maria Casares.
Others
• He founded the Revolutionary Union Movement- group opposed the Surrealist Movement of Andre Breton.
• His main aim was to express the positive side of surrealism and existentialism.
• Also founded the European Federalist Movement but was dissolved the next year in 1945
Works/Plays• His report on the unhappy state of the Muslims of the Kabylie region
aroused the Algerian government to action and brought him public notice. Also about the poor in that region and the bad living conditions they faced.
• He ran the Théâtre de l'Equipe, a company that produced plays by Malraux, Gide, Synge, Dostoevski, and other.
• During WWII, one of the leading writers of the French Resistance and editor of Combat.
• He was very active in the theater and some of his plays were published/produced.
• Expressed his opposition of the US bombing in Hiroshima in public• His work was dualist: happiness and sadness, light and dark, etc.• Also talked about “the absurd”- refers to the conflict between the
human tendency to seek value and meaning in life and the human inability to find any
