CHRIST CHRONICLE
Christ Lutheran Church and School
7701 Candelaria Road NE
Albuquerque, NM 87110
Dear Friends, A new year! Many of us use the opportunity to reflect on times past and to look forward to times to come. We think about making changes in the patterns and activities of our life – health changes, job changes, even changes to “get right with God.” Our attempts at these changes are often short lived, as we fall short of the goals we set and the expectations we have of ourselves and others. We then give up entirely. Rather than face the reality of our failures we “forget our goals” and fall back into our old patterns. It really is hard for Lutherans to change! The only way real change works is to find joy in the process! Let me use health as an example. For some of us, there is little joy in the prospect of eating less (or right) and exercising more. We know the end result will leave us feeling better and even perhaps living longer, but the short term challenges leave us feeling defeated before we even get started. The same thing happens spiritually. It’s easier to stick to our old patterns of worship, prayer, Bible study, and giving, rather than to make changes – even when the end results are so positive. Changing our patterns of behavior require us to move out of our comfort zones and to establish new patterns. It is often hard to find joy in the process of change. The question remains: “How do we find joy in the effort to change?” The answer is found only in Christ. Ask yourself: Who am I? To whom does my life
belong? How much do I live for Him and give to Him? So, who are you? First, and foremost, you are a child of God. You may also be a husband or wife, an employee, a parent, etc. Your identity, however, always flows from Christ. He, not the world, defines you. To Whom does your life belong? It belongs to Christ, who bought and paid for it with His death on a cross. He is always working in your life to mold and shape you into someone unique and special. Now the tough question – How much do I live for Him and give to Him? We know the answer should be everything, but... we’d rather not go there. To live our whole life for God... To give all of our resources to Him ... we struggle with the whole concept. We don’t particularly struggle with living and giving for our family, education, jobs, recreation, vacations and the like. Our struggles, our difficulties and our questions arise in living for God and giving to His church. The problem is we approach it all backwards. We start with “us” and try to figure out where God fits into our busy lives. We start with “ours” and try to figure out how much to give to God. He and His church are not to be afterthoughts that we fit in if we have leftover time and resources. This approach robs us of joy and motivation. It causes us to think about what we are giving up or losing. It is all about us. True joy and motivation flow from Christ. Turn it all around. Start with God! It is not about fitting God in, it is about arranging everything else (family, relationships, job, activities...) to flow out of our relationship with Him. How do all of the ways I live flow out of how He shapes my life and what He calls me to do? It is not about giving to God out of the leftovers (if there are

any) of the resources. It is, rather, understanding the resources belong to Him in the first place! He calls us to trust Him by giving offerings first to Him in order to support the work of His kingdom in our congregation, where we worship, pray, learn, serve and reach out to the world together. The leftovers (remember the twelve basketsful flowing from five loaves of bread and two fish) take care of everything else in life – and God provides those as well! True joy flows from learning to trust Him. Yes, we will struggle with our own strengths, weaknesses, and limitations in the process, and through it all be shaped by Him. God is the whole of our lives. When we begin to see and understand our relationship with Him in that way, the Joy comes. It really is that easy. Our gracious and giving Lord calls us to start with Him, not ourselves. He calls us to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. He also calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Here at Christ Lutheran Church and School, we are changing! Over the next several weeks (and months) we will be learning, growing, and changing together as we focus on stewardship. This journey will include the process of pledging at the end of February, a process new to many of you and about which you will hear more in the coming weeks. Through the next weeks and year you will be challenged! At times, you may feel awkward, guilty, uncomfortable, maybe even afraid. Hopefully and prayerfully you will also learn to trust, let go, find joy, and grow into a peace that passes all of our human understanding. I challenge everyone to hold on tight and to walk together! After all, I really believe that Lutherans, through Christ, can change! In Christ, Pastor Neal Groeling

GIVE THANKS… IT IS THERAPUTIC!!!
I am not sure when I really learned to give thanks to God. I know it wasn’t at the best of times, when all things good were happening in my life. I am thinking it was during some really tough times…you see those are often the times when our faith grows the most.
What I do know is that when we truly learn to give thanks to God, to show Him our gratitude for what He has done, what He is doing, and what He is going to do, it puts everything in proper perspective and shows us how truly fortunate we are.
When we are truly thankful to God, it takes our eyes and our hearts off ourselves, and helps us to focus back on God. It reminds us that He is in control.
I am grateful to God for so much here at Christ Lutheran Church and School. As we move forward into Lent these are a few of the things I am grateful for:
- For the opportunity to share God’s love with all of His children while growing together in Christ
- For the family we have here at Christ Lutheran Church & School
- For Pastor Groeling
- For our many Worship opportunities and styles
- For our variety of music
- For our opportunities to share in the Sacrament
- For the Baptisms and Confirmations throughout the year
- For our visitors
- For our Sunday School, its volunteers, and its children
- For our Sunday Bible Studies, and those through-out the week
- For our new speakers and sound enhancements
- For our teachers and school
- For the many students hearing the Gospel and being prepared for the world at our school
- For our active PTL group (Continued on page 7)

From the Principal Kim Rasmussen
Early in January, I had the opportunity
to attend two funerals. To say that I
did not want to go is an understatement. The only
thing that comes after attending funerals on my list
of things that I don’t want to do is dress up like Elsa
and sing, “Let it Go” if the kids raise $7,000 for
Jump for the Heart. Not that I don’t want to do this
for them, but singing in public is terrifying for me,
and I suspect at least one person will video it! But I
digress… back to the funerals. I have always
understood that funerals are for the living, a chance
to celebrate a life, mourn the immediate loss, and
begin to look forward to being reunited in Heaven
someday. The second funeral took place on Martin
Luther King Jr. Day. It was a grieving family who had
lost their baby before he was born. During the
service, the Pastor talked about their strong faith
and desire to be sure that everyone who came
would hear the good news of Jesus Christ, died and
raised to save us. I showed up at the graveside
thinking that I was supporting them in their time of
loss; what I ended up with was a lesson on what
faith looks like in a grieving parent. As I listened to
the dad sing a song, mom came out of her chair and
fell to the ground near the too small box. Grandma
knelt beside her daughter and hugged her as I tried
desperately to cry in silence. What astounded me
was that in this dark moment of her deepest grief, in
front of all of the people who care about her, this
mom raised her hand in praise to God. It was the
most moving gesture that she could do, and I’ll
never look at funerals the same again.
This February, we are looking forward to an Open
House on the 3rd from 10:00 – 2:00, and a
kindergarten roundup on the 7th from 5-7. I know
you may be reading this after the fact, but one fact
remains. We need you. We need your help to
spread the word about Christ Lutheran School. The
more children in our classes, the more we get to
teach about Christ. The more families we get to
connect with, the more opportunities the Holy Spirit
has to work in their hearts and minds. And for some,
He has the opportunity to continue his work in our
lives through them!
In Christ,
Kimberly Rasmussen

Our season of Epiphany continues and culminates with Transfiguration Sunday, February 11. The brightness of our Lord shines; we see Jesus in all His glory! As Jesus was transfigured on the mountain, we are transformed by the Gospel. God’s light shines in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. On this Sunday we say “goodbye” to the alleluias for the season of Lent. The choir anthem that day is “Thank You for the Music.”
The darkness of our sin and deserved death are the reason for Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection – God’s plan for our salvation! Not that we need a special season to realize and notice our sinfulness, but Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, is that time of penitence. For six weeks we will meditate on our need for a Savior, and thank God for His mercy that He would sacrifice His only Son for us. Jesus paid the price for all our sins! The cross is our symbol of complete freedom from sin, death, and the power of the devil.
Join us on Wednesdays during Lent for worship at 12 noon or 7 p.m.
The annual Chili Cook-off and Talent Show will be held Sunday, February 25. Show us your skills in the kitchen and in other ways! It’s lots of fun!!

FROM THE BOARD OF YOUTH January was a quiet month for the youth. They had
just as much fun taking down the Christmas
decorations in the church as they did when they put
them up. It was back to school after a greatly
deserved break. They also hosted a Middle School
Event/Game Night for the school kids.
In February, instead of hosting a game night for the
middle school kids they will be inviting them to an
afternoon of bowling. They sold pizzas for the Super
Bowl. Thank you for those who supported them with
this. Mark your calendars. At the end of the month,
we will be hosting the Annual Chili Cook-off/Talent
Show on Feb 25th. The youth will also continue
preparing for the Youth Quake that will take place in
Phoenix in April.
Away from church, many of the kids are involved with
various athletics. One other is also in the church
choir, and also plays piano. Others are also involved
with Girl and Boy Scouts.

For a number of years, members of the congregation met monthly in homes for a potluck dinner and lively conversation. For various reasons, this was discontinued. Many of us miss this opportunity to gather and get to know one another in a small group, informal situation. So we are going to have Dinner Groups on Saturdays, February 24 and March 24. You can participate on either or both dates.
The process is simple. Just send Marcia Koschmann an email at [email protected] to let her know that you are interested in participating. Also, let her know if you are willing to host.
Those participating will be divided into groups of approximately 8 people and assigned to a host. The host will provide the main dish and will contact the others in the group to let them know the meeting time and what they should bring. The next thing to do is show up prepared to have a good time.
If you are available on Saturday February 24, please email or talk to Marcia by Sunday, February 18th.

OPENING BIBLE VERSE: 2 Corinthians 12:9-11 But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
DEAR PARTNERS IN CHRIST: We had an amazing turnout and an awesome time on Christmas Eve at East Central Ministries. Thanks to all the wonderful and generous people from Christ Lutheran Church, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Calvary Lutheran Church, Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ray of Hope Lutheran Church, for all the donations and their time. We had a little more than 100 people attend the service, given by Pastor Groeling of Christ Lutheran Church and by Jim Kunkle of Calvary Lutheran Church. Every child left with a new coat, gloves, beanie and a toy and the adults left there with a new coat, gloves, scarves and a beanie. It was a heart-warming experience to see all of those children and adults leave with beautiful smiles on their faces. I personally had a tearful young lady give me a big hug thanking us for providing gifts for her children. I encourage you all to experience this wonderful feeling of helping others; it is one of the most fulfilling feelings I have ever experienced in my life. We would like to thank everyone once again for all the donations that helped make this event such a success. First and foremost, we thank our Lord and Savior for letting us plan these events.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT:

CLOSING PRAYER: Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the beginning and end, hear our prayers as we cry out to you to end the merciless shedding of innocent blood in our nation and throughout the world. Through death you have conquered death and through your life we experience eternal and everlasting life. Cause life to spring forth in the hearts of all people and bring forth a love and respect for life that will dominate our culture. May your kingdom and church apprehend and overtake the culture of death that has prevailed through deceit and selfishness. In your precious name we pray, Amen!

Weekly Scripture Readings & Sermon Summaries February 2018
February 4, 2018 – Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
Psalm: 103:1-5; Old Testament: Isaiah 40:28-31; Gospel: Mark 1:29-39. “Like Eagles” - Sermon Text: Isaiah 40:28-31 – Rev. Dr. Walter Maier III. At times we are wearied by life’s challenges, and find it dif-ficult to move forward. But there is One who never gets tired, who is almighty, who understands our situation. He loves us, and has saved us, and will renew our strength so that we can soar “like eagles.”
February 11, 2018 – The Transfiguration of Our Lord
Psalm: 50:1-6; Epistle: 2 Corinthians 3:12-13; 4:1-6; Gospel: Mark 9:2-9. “You Sure Look Different” - Sermon Text: Mark 9:2-9 - Rev. Paul Shoemaker. When a person’s appearance changes we take note. If it is for the good, we look for good news. If it is for the bad, we look for bad news. Jesus’ appearance changed for the good. What news does Jesus have for us?
February 18, 2018 – First Sunday in Lent
Psalm: 25:1-10; Epistle: James 1:12-18; Gospel: Mark 1:9-15. “Contrasting Adams” - Sermon Text: Mark 1:9-15 - Rev. Dr. Daniel Brege. Adam, God's created son, failed in every way; he succumbed to the temptation of Satan and ate of the forbidden tree, bringing the curse upon paradise...making it into a wilderness. For us God's beloved Son became the Second Adam; He entered the wilderness of man's fallen world, He overcame Satan's temptations, and by obediently going to the tree of the cross and rising from the dead, paradise is restored for mankind.
February 25, 2018 – Second Sunday in Lent
Psalm: 22:23-31; Epistle: Romans 5:6-11; Gospel: Mark 8:27-35. “What’s Your Final Answer?” - Sermon Text: Mark 8:29 - Rev. Dr. Thomas Ahlersmeyer. Jesus’ question to Peter is the most important question that people (including us) ever will have to answer. What are the “lifelines” you can go to for answers? What’s your final answer?

YOUTH EVENTS
Christ Lutheran Chronicle
The Chronicle is published for members and friends of Christ
Lutheran Church & School. News items and articles are due in
the church office on the 15th of the month prior to the month in
which you wish to be published. Your submission may be edited
for content or length. Thank you for your participation and cooperation!
Our Senior Fellowship Outing for February will be on Friday February 23rd when we will visit the NM Museum of Natural History and Science to view the long awaited, long anticipated Da Vinci, The Genius exhibit. This exhibition was created by the Grande Exhibitions of Victoria, Australia in collaboration with the Museo Leonardo da Vinci, Rome and the French scientific engineer Pascal Cotte. This is a must see event. Following our tour we will have lunch at the St Clair Winery.
For more information call: Lee Swanger (294-6752) or Eunice Hoeft (889-9705).
Christ Lutheran Women’s Guild/LWML
February is all about love. Valentine’s Day is a great time to share love with the people that mean the most to us. Flowers, candy and greeting cards are nice but not lasting. So how can we show love? We show love to others by being patient and kind, listening carefully, and providing for the physical needs of oth-ers. Christ Lutheran Church has many opportunities to show love to others. You can volunteer at the school or at God Cares about You. Our Women’s Guild (LWML) has a group that makes quilts. We also collect mites that fund Mission Grants in our Rocky Mountain District and through the LWML. These grants provide funds to projects around the world and just around the corner.
The Rocky Mountain District LWML will be meeting in June to elect new officers and vote on new mission grants. Our current grants are not fully funded and the deadline to send in mites is fast approaching. Please prayerfully consider making a mite donation. These donations can be placed in the large mite box in the narthex or given to Lois Postenrieder or Debbie Yocky. See our bulletin board in the parish hall for more information about the LWML and the RMD Mission Grant. This is a lasting gift of love.
Debbie Yocky Women’s Guild President
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A STEPHEN MINISTER? Stephen Ministers are lay people - Christian men and women -
trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a
difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or
terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military
deployment. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life.
Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ’s love and
care to people during a time of need. Are you ready to become
a Stephen Minister? We will begin new Stephen Ministry
training in February. It’s 50 hours of training every other
Tuesday night, and some weekend retreats. It sounds like a
lot, but it will be the “best 50 hours of training you'll ever
experience”.
Here’s what Stephen Ministers frequently say that about their
training:
- Stephen Minister training teaches principles and skills that
equip you to provide high-quality, Christ-centered emotional
and spiritual care to others.
- You gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of
people who are hurting.
- You develop relational and caring skills you can apply to all
aspects of your life.
- You deepen your faith as the Holy Spirit fashions you into a
Christ-centered caregiver.
- You feel a special bond with those in your class -
experiencing real Christian community.
- Stephen Minister training is a lot of fun!
Contact a Stephen Leader or Pastor to get started.

A vote was taken at the January meeting and it was decided to continue meeting at The Egg and I on Menaul and Louisiana. There were 9 of us including a new Honoree who has joined us. We had a good time and hope more ladies 55 and over will join us. We reserved the private room for Thursday, Feb. 8 at 11:45. The menu is quite varied and there are lots of good dishes from which to choose. You will receive an e-mail reminder the day before and I would appreciate having a yes or no from each of you, so that I can tell the restaurant how many places to set. Thank you. Eunice Hoeft - [email protected].
