Solution Release Description

Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) Overview

The Converged Backbone Transformation (CBT) Solution aims to significantly reduce the cost (both capex and opex) of reliably transporting high volumes of traffic while extracting appropriate value from innovative new services.

In doing so, CBT provides:

• Best-of-breed IP and Optical products and service from a single vendor

• Maximum architectural flexibility optimizing network capex and opex spend

• Fully integrated IP and Optical solution package

Integrated across the Management Plane, Control Plane and Data Planes

• Solution validation

• Single Transport platform for Metro to Long Haul applications

• Single IP platform for Aggregation to Edge to Core applications

• Single Service offer for engineering, installation, integration & maintenance

• Optional multivendor maintenance and migration services

Origins for the Solution

Some of the key drivers that initiated the need for this solution include the following:

• Discussions with prospective customers for the Blueprint Solution

• Customer-issued Requests for Proposal (RFP) or similar

• Independent Alcatel-Lucent study to consolidate and/or generalize requirements input from multiple customers or to develop solution requirements in advance of clearly articulated customer needs.

Solution Release Description

15 3MM 02100 ADAA FMZZA Issue 1 November 2010

Solution Purpose

Driven by video and interactive multimedia applications, the volume of Internet traffic traversing service provider networks continues to increase dramatically. Networks must handle an increasingly diverse array of data flows, ranging from mission critical business and financial data to video, fixed and mobile voice, L2 and L3 VPN services, and internet access. On top of the traffic growth, new applications and business models are at once creating new opportunities for and placing further demands on the infrastructure. The net result of this increase in traffic has often been called the “exaflood” phenomenon.

Figure 1 – The evolution of cost in Service Provider Networks

At the same time, service providers strive to balance two conflicting goals. To be successful they must simultaneously reduce the cost of reliably transporting high volumes of traffic while extracting appropriate value from innovative new services. Most have undertaken major efforts to converge on IP-MPLS as the common bearer of all traffic to unify their networks. Operators strive to contain costs and minimize risk as they converge all services to their IP-based infrastructure with efficient Ethernet-based access to an IP-MPLS core which feeds into the DWDM optical transport infrastructure. But often all they can manage to do is add core routers to their network fast enough to manage the growth of traffic on their networks. They do so at significant cost, and in a manner identical to the mode of operation in the early days of internet growth. Taking a closer look at the present mode of operation reveals a very interesting opportunity for transformation of the transport network, leading to drastically improved efficiency.

In general, which architecture to choose will be driven by the respective service mix and traffic distribution of the provider, with the architectures provided intended to address both large Tier1 operators as well as Tier2/3, CLEC and both large and small MSO providers.

Alcatel-Lucent’s approach with this transformation is not simply to provide raw technology, but rather, to provide a focus on the underlying business problem by understanding the provider’s specific service mix and traffic distribution. This enables operators to Increase bandwidth where and when you need it.

• Optimize the network with IP-offload strategies, including:

 Sub-port level grooming

 Router-port level grooming

 λ gr grooming

Known Problems

Overview

This chapter provides descriptions of known problems and workarounds for problems that exist in the Converged Backbone Transformation Solution Release 2.0.

Note: There may be product-specific issues that are not covered in this solution documentation. Please see the product-related documentation (Table 2 Information products related to the Converged Backbone Transformation Solution” (p. vii)).

SRD-1: When interworking between 7750SR and 1830PSS, the 7750 SR does not recognize the Local Fault Indicator (LFI) message sent from 1830PSS. The 7750 SR treats the LFI as a Remote Fault Indicator (RFI) and a port shut down is not performed.

Workaround: By changing the behavior of the 1830 to turn the laser off, the 7750 shows an alarm of signal-fail local no-frame-lock and returns a remote failure indication in the upstream direction. This is forwarded by the 1830 and received on the 7750 port at the other end which shows an alarm of remote and marks the operating state of the port as down.

SRD-2: The 7750 SR Fast Reroute (FRR) failovers did not meet the sub 60 millisecond switch-over requirement when the primary path for the LSP used was a 100 Gbps link and the detour and secondary/standby used was a 10 Gbps link.

Workaround: None. Will be fixed in subsequent 7750 SR software release.

Solution Clarification

Overview

This section provides a description of system behaviors that may be confusing or unexpected by the user. It is intended to explain why certain behavior are observed. These descriptions can also be considered as user guidelines to make note of. These behaviors are not expected to change during the life of the solution.

Note: There may be product-specific issues that are not covered in this solution documentation. Please see the product-related documentation (Table 2 Information products related to the Converged Backbone Transformation Solution” (p. vii)).

SC-1: When adding or restoring LAG members to the 7750 SR, any traffic on the existing link(s) may sustain a brief hit. Traffic impact in these cases was determined to be less than a millisecond. This is a result of the IEEE 802.3 defined "coupled control" mode used by the 7750 SR. The way "coupled control" works is that when a link recovers, both Receive and Transmit are enabled at the same time. When the remote end is not completely ready to receive transmission, there may be an impact to the traffic.

SC-2: For 1625 and 1830 systems using 10Gb interfaces, GFP mode operates as expected and per the standard. As such, any FRR switches done through optical products like the 1830 /1625 may take longer than 60ms. This is the result of passing remote failure indicators across GFP based channels. This behavior is not typically a concern for IP based traffic. For any traffic that does require switch times within 60ms, CBR mode should be used instead of GFP. Doing so ensures that switch times will be within 60ms.

SC-3: When running both optical protection schemes(OSNCP, OChP, OMSP) and packet level protection mechanisms (MPLS), it was determined that race conditions can be introduced into the network if the appropriate hold down timers are not set within the network. These race conditions can result in longer than expected switches and have been observed to be in the order of seconds. When optical protection schemes are used in conjunction with IP/MPLS resiliency, it is recommended that BFD be used with a minimum polling interval of 20ms to avoid such race conditions.

SC-4: The 1678 MCC system does support 1GExLAG in CBT R1.0. AR(s): 10GExLAG with the 1678 MCC system will be considered for future releases of this solution.

SC-5: When an OSNCP switch occurs on the 1830 system, there will be a transmission hit visible at the client side while the two transponders are exchanging links. This hit time was observed to be less than 5ms.

SC-6: 1626/7750 & 1830/7750:

Synchronous Ethernet may not function properly if GFP mode is used. GFP mode does not support Synchronous Ethernet.

SC-7: Signal regeneration of 7750 DWDM MDA cannot be regenerated through a 1626 10G transponder. G.709 FEC is not supported since the 1626LM is focused on long haul applications.

SC-8: While Synchronous Ethernet (syncE) transparency is fully validated with IP based single layer resiliency models and port level grooming at 10G rates (IP/MPLS protection, no optical protection deployed), issues will be encountered when attempting to use multi-layer resiliency models (optical protection mechanisms).

This can be observed as longer than expected clock reference acquisition time and or longer than expected phase deviation. 10G port-level syncE solutions within CBT pass G.8262 criteria when running in unprotected optical transport configurations. If IP layer protection schemes are used instead of optical protection, this issue does not occur.

40G muxponders employing GFP based encoding do not support transparent synchronous Ethernet.

Design recommendation: Employ single layer resiliency models with IP/MPLS protection, and no optical protection when designing for SyncE transparency.

SC-9: Alarm propagation across the 1830 PSS-32 with 100G interfaces exhibited delays which can cause the FRR switch-over times to exceed the requirement. (Observed with 7750 even epipe workaround). The is currently believe to be function as design based on the framing mode (GFM) used by the 1830 PSS 100G cards. Use BFD with a polling interval of 10ms to achieve fail over times that are sub 50ms and meet the requirement.

SC-10: The 7750 SR12 uses hashing algorithms to distribute traffic across SFM3s to achieve 100G performance. Designing or provisioning a single even or odd epipe configuration will limit the throughput to 50G if dual SFM3s are used. If only a single SFM3 is used, the throughput is limited to 25G. Use multiple epipes and address distribution to meet full 100G performance.
