When THC, is absorbed into the bloodstream by smoking or eating, it binds to specific receptors in the brain. This is often referred to as the "high" or being "stoned".

When eaten it will take anywhere from an hour up to two and half hours for the drug to get into the blood stream, as it must be absorbed by the stomach and small intestine. Marijuana is most commonly eaten in brownies and cakes.

This slow ingestion can increase users overdose risks, as it is hard to regulate the dose absorbed into the blood stream.
