Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about taking care of ourselves and our bodies. When this time of the year rolls around, many people begin to work for that “summer body,” but most do not know what that entails. Getting in shape for summer does not mean slimming down to a size zero, but it means feeling like your best self, and knowing you are doing everything you can to be healthy. There are two main components to getting in shape for summer, which include fitness and nutrition. Fitness The key to developing an effective fitness routine is consistency, or thinking about how many times a week you work out as opposed to for how long. It is typically recommended to work out at least three times a week and get some sort of exercise for 30 minutes every day. The best cardio workout to shed pounds is high-intensity workouts where you exert yourself through exercises, such as sprinting for a few seconds at a time. Nutrition It may be hard to stick to a diet when everyone else around you is eating ice cream in the hot sun, but moderation is key. Dr. Philip Goglia, the official nutritionist for Marvel Productions, recommends avoiding “foods that have multiple ingredients, such as breads, muffins, bagels, pastries, cereals, etc.” This is because many of these products are filled with refined sugars that lead to bloating. Another tip Dr. Goglia recommends is to eliminate dairy from your diet. Alternative dairy products such as almond milk and soy milk have recently become more popular to drink than traditional cow’s milk. Today, it is easy to find alternative products in grocery stores as well. Last but not least, make sure to eat a ton of vegetables and leafy greens to add fuel and healthy nutrients to your body. The most important piece of attaining summer fitness goals is eating clean and having the right mindset. You need to have confidence in yourself and that every little thing you do, such as walking outside, is leading up to your end goal. So, get up, go outside, and enjoy the summer sun! Failing to prepare is preparing to fail… or something like that. Whether you believe in corny sayings or not, staying organized and motivated during the last few weeks of the semester is important to your success. Here are some tipsforacingthosefinalexams, papersandpresentations!

1. Pick a time and place, and stick to it! Carving our time in your day is a great way to keep yourself accountable. Pickaplaceyouknowworksforyou.Ifyoulikecompletesilence,findastudycarrelinMcKeldinonthesixthorseventhfloor,orifyoudon’tmindsomenoise,gotoyourfavoritecoffeeshopandcampoutatatable.

2. Stay organized.Thiscouldlookverydifferentforeachandeveryperson.Somepeopleliveanddiebyto-dolistsor using a planner (that’s me!), but others use sticky notes on their computer or rely on their Google Calendar. Some throw papers loosely into their backpack, but that works for them. Find out how you like to stay organized and make sure you keep your due dates, notes, etc. in one place.

3. Study every day. People hate to hear it, but this is really how you learn the most information. Cramming the night before is not very efficient.Take an hour or twoevery day to cover certain material and build on it every day for a week leading up to your exam.

4. Figure out what works for you. Some people learn better by listening to lectures or videos, called auditory learning. Some need to read material or look at photos, which is visual learning. And some need to take quizzes or draw diagrams, also known as tactile learning.Lookingatflashcardsorreadingthetextbookover and over may not work for you, and that’s ok! You may learn best with one, two, or all three of thesestyles, sofindwhatworksforyouandsticktoit.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s okay if you need some guidance or don’t quite understand the material. If you have a TA, use them. Have a list of things you want to go over, and go to their officehoursorsetupatimetomeet.Needhelprevisingapaper?Use theWriting Center in Tawes Hall. They also offer onlinetutoring — check it out here. Work together with classmates that you trust, and collaborate! They can be great resources.

6. Take a break!! For every hour that you study, take a 10-15 minute break to clear your head. Stay focused for the whole hour, then take a few minutes to eat a snack, take a quick walk, check your phone, anything that does not involve doing work! It will keep you on track and less distracted.

Whether you choose to follow all of these, try just a few, or ignore me all together, stay strong during these next fewweeks.Goodluck, andcongratsonfinishinganothersemester!
