Alden Intermediate School 3-5 Home Study Art Project Week #2 Laurel Burch Inspired Pet Portrait Welcome back! I miss you lots and hope that you and your families are doing well. Starting this week, we will be filling our homemade sketchbooks with artworks based on the artists we have learned about this year as well as some other big art concepts. I am keeping the materials simple (colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.), but if all you have is a pencil or pen at home, thats fine, too. I cant wait to see what youve created! If you cant wait to share it with me, you can send a picture to my e-mail: [email protected]. Id love to see your hard work! Please make your picture in the sketchbook that you created last week. This way, everything is in one safe place. Thanks!

Home Study Art Project Week #2

Laurel Burch Inspired Pet Portrait

Welcome back! I miss you lots and hope that you and your families are doing well.

Starting this week, we will be filling our homemade sketchbooks with artworks based on the artists we have learned about this year as well as some other big art concepts. I am keeping the materials simple (colored pencils, markers, crayons, etc.), but if all you have is a pencil or pen at home, that’s fine, too.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve created! If you can’t wait to share it with me, you can send a picture to my e-mail: [email protected]. I’d love to see your hard work!

Please make your picture in the sketchbook that you created last week. This way, everything is in one safe place. Thanks!

Materials Needed:

• Sketchbook (made last week by stapling papers together) • Pencil and eraser • Optional: Color pencils, crayons, or markers

Suggested Timeline:

This art project can be done in one sitting if that works best for your schedule. However, if you prefer to do a little bit each day, here’s a suggested timeline:

Day 1: Review the artist Laurel Burch. What do you remember about Laurel Burch? What did her artwork look like? Perhaps find some examples of her work on the internet if that is available to you.

Day 2: Draw your pet or pets in pencil. Try filling the space up. Don’t have a pet? That’s OK- what pet would you love to have if you could have any pet? Draw that animal! Remember, neatness matters.

Day 3: Start adding Laurel Burch designs and details. What types of patterns and decorations did she like to use?

Day 4: If you have crayons, markers or color pencils available, color in your artwork. Laurel Burch was a very colorful artist- use her colors as inspiration.

Day 5: Finish up your artwork. Share your artwork with your family. Tell them what your favorite part is and why.

Laurel Burch Inspired Pet Portrait

I really enjoyed drawing my cats, Leo and Vincent, in the style of Laurel Burch! It was also a lot of fun adding other animals (like fish or a lizard) to give you some ideas of how you could draw a different animal. This project not only reviews the art of Laurel Burch, it is also a great way to practice patterns, decorations and designs!

1. Draw your pet. Don’t have a pet? That’s OK! Draw an animal you would like to have as a pet (Yep, even a pet dragon is OK with me!).

2. Add Laurel Burch decorations and designs.

3. Add color (if you have it). I used color pencil for my

project, but crayons or skinny markers would work well, too.

4. Does your artwork need more to look finished? What about creating a background?
