During that discussion, Councillor Kim Richter called the corner lot “unsightly” while Councillors Charlie Fox and Bob Long both said it was an “eyesore.”

“It’s good they are going to clean up that corner,” Fox said.

“It’s been left in a derelict state for a while now.”

According to Township records, both the gas station and the fast food outlet closed shortly after a redevelopment permit was applied for in September of 2001.

They have been vacant ever since.

A campaign to allow Vancouver-style urban chicken coops in Langley Township back yards will come before council next month.

It’s the idea of Emma Giesbrecht and the Otter Flying Feathers 4H Club, who wanted 30 minutes to make their case for a permit-based process that would allow 4-H mem-bers who don’t live on farms to raise chickens and rabbits at their homes.

Instead, council voted to give Giesbrecht and the club 10 minutes on June 10 at the afternoon council meeting and asked them to provide more information about the proposal before the presentation.

Giesbrecht, a 13-year-old Brookswood resident who joined 4-H four years ago, has set up a Facebook page, “Chickens for Langley, BC” that calls for allowing backyard chicken coops in residen-tial areas like the cities of Vancouver, Seattle and New York.

“Chickens make fantastic pets, are easy to care for, and have great per-sonalities,” the page states.

“They are quieter than dogs. They

provide great benefits like organic eggs for your kitchen, and organic fertilizer…”

Because Giesbrecht and her siblings live in a residential area of Brookswood they must keep their

chickens at a South Langley farm. The City of Vancouver approved

urban chicken coops in residential backyards in 2010.

During the debate that preceded the decision, opponents worried

about everything from noise to an alleged risk of bird flu and a possible rise in predators.

The Vancouver Humane Society and BCSPCA were concerned the coops were a fad that would lead to

neglect of the birds once interest faded.

Since then, about 100 Vancouver households have obtained permits to raise chickens.

The City of Vancouver Animal Control Bylaw limits the number of birds in a back yard to four hens, no roosters, four months or older.

It sets out the minimum size for coops and requires owners to “main-tain each hen enclosure in good repair and sanitary condition, and free from vermin and obnoxious smells and substances.”

Coops have to be kept locked from sunset to sunrise and owners must “remove leftover feed, trash, and manure in a timely manner … store manure within a fully enclosed structure, and store no more than three cubic feet of manure at a time.”

Ducks, turkeys, and other fowl or livestock (such as goats) are not allowed.

Eggs, meat, and manure cannot be sold for commercial purposes

Backyard slaughtering is not allowed.

Registration of birds is free and it can be done online.

St. Dunstan’s Church is hosting free gardening workshops again this year.

The Garden to Table (G2T) program is working in partner-ship with Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) to pres-ent a Gardening “101” series of free workshops for new or novice gar-dener on Saturdays at St. Dunstan’s Church Hall at 3025 - 264 Street, Aldergrove.

Patsy Homan instructs youths in her Garden to Table (G2T) garden-ing class on Monday afternoons at St. Dunstan’s Church in Aldergrove.

“We have just started planting up the raised beds - we have 16 in our (church) garden. They are learning about planting seeds, pota-toes and vegetable starts this sum-mer,” said Homan.

“In their journals, they record the planting dates for each vegeta-ble, how far apart to plant the seeds and paste the seeds onto the page so they know what they look like. By the end of the summer, they will have a scrapbook they can keep for many years as a reference.”

The kids’ class is part of the Garden to Table program. In the summer, they will harvest the veg-

etables they’ve grown each week for the church’s G2T community dinners each Thursday.

Gardening with Kids is the next class on May 25, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Having trouble getting your child to eat their vegetables? Once they learn how to grow their own, they will love eating lettuce and carrots.

Be prepared to roll up your sleeves during this hands on workshop for you and your kids.

For more information or to reg-ister for the workshops, please call St. Dunstan’s at 604-856-5393 or email: [email protected]. Space is limited, so register as soon as you can.

HARRY HUNT PHOTOAldergrove’s Lloyd Delves (right, with wife Lorna) received his 40 year service award from Fire Chief Steven Gamble at the Langley Fire Fighters banquet and awards night, Saturday, May 11. Lloyd began his fire service career in Delta (1969-1973), then Port Hardy (1973-1977) and Slocan (1977-1981) where he served as Fire Chief and Am-bulance Attendant. The Delves family then moved to Aldergrove, where he joined Aldergrove Fire Department Zone 3, where he still serves after 43 years in the fire service. Along with Lorna, Lloyd’s father Charlie, daughter Lisa and grandchildren Tavis, Keegan and Chase, were present for the ceremony on Saturday.

The Fraser River is rising fast as a result of rapid snowmelt from last week’s hot weather as well as rain since then. The B.C. River Forecast Centre on Monday issued a high streamflow advisory for the Fraser in the Lower Mainland, as well as

further upstream in Quesnel, the Fraser Canyon and at Hope

The Fraser was flowing at 9,000 cubic metres per second at Hope as of Monday and that was forecast to reach 10,000 as early as Wednesday and potentially 11,500 by Thursday.

“Given current rates of rise in tributary channels, and we weather

yesterday and today, model results may be underestimating the rate of rise in the Lower Fraser,” the fore-cast centre cautioned.

A high streamflow advisory means river levels are expected to rise rapidly, and although minor flooding in low-lying areas is possi-ble, no major flooding is expected.

L E T T E R S

VICTORIA – Another election campaign has come and gone, with the ritual pos-turing of political parties and most news media searching for anything they can portray as a con ict.

Now comes the time to wonder why not enough peo-ple cared, or informed them-selves about the real problems of running this $40 billion corporation called the B.C. government.

Why would they, when the whole thing is presented as a combination of beauty contest and sports event, with endless discussion of polls and “a ack ads” and who’s ahead and what’s the score?

Again we have seen the truth of former prime minis-ter Kim Campbell’s observa-tion that elections are no time to talk about serious issues. Indeed, there are some things you can’t speak of at all.

Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm caused a stir at a candidates’ debate when he referred to constituents’ con-cerns that disabled children can cause di culties in class-rooms.

He didn’t say class-rooms should be segregated, although that’s a discussion worth having. He didn’t deny the need for more support for special needs kids. But his opponents immediately por-trayed it that way, and media seized on the con ict despite the factual inaccuracy.

West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan had a similar experience when he referred to his study of pov-erty in that a uent area. He noted that there was a high correlation between single parenthood and kids in pov-erty. Picking on single mums, his detractors exclaimed, and that’s what got reported.

e B.C. Conservatives kicked their Boundary-Similkameen candidate out of the party because he wrote an article saying women shouldn’t choose to be single mothers.

You can talk about child poverty, as long as you only discuss it based on federal statistics that do not measure poverty. Christy Clark start-ed doing this as soon as she became B.C. Liberal leader, one of several issues where she dispensed with the facts and tried to copy a popular NDP stance instead.

She was all about fami-lies, which can of course be single people, single parents or pre y well anything you want them to be.

In fact the decline of the traditional family and the abdication of responsibil-ity by many parents, fathers in particular, are central factors in the problem of poor and neglected children. But you can’t talk about that, at least not during elections.

Whole areas of politi-cal discussion have devolved

into euphemisms that are chosen because they can’t be de ned. Everybody’s in favour of “a ordable housing,” for instance. What they won’t admit is that this is code for subsidized housing, because then they would have to talk about how much the subsidy is, and who has to pay for it.

Good grief, that might raise the question of whether the state should be taking money away from some peo-ple and giving it to others so they can live where they oth-erwise couldn’t a ord to live.

We even have rules pre-venting the media from reporting polls on election day. People might be in u-enced by this, you see. If you tell them Party X is far ahead, they might stay home and mow the lawn instead. If you tell them someone is making a comeback, they might change their vote because they want to be on the winning side, or the one that has “momentum.” Just like any other sport.

e news media are steadi-ly losing in uence with the public.

ere are many factors involved, including the vast array of information sources that are available at most peo-ple’s ngertips.

Another factor is treating the public like they’re idiots.

ings you can’t say in elections

IRICE: Ingrid Rice’s View Work for us, not againstEditor:Regarding various articles in e Aldergrove Star edition of

April 25 why does the “Township put brakes on Aldergrove?” Are the councillors working for or against us?

When it comes to the pool one councillor says that a bigger pool would cost more to heat. Hasn’t he heard of geothermal heat? And it wouldn’t only be Aldergrove taxpayers paying for it. It would be all of Langley Township paying for it.

We in Aldergrove pay for the Langley Events Centre too. We also don’t need a new ice rink; we’ve got the Events Centre with more than enough seating.

Another councillor doesn’t want businesses built at 264 Street and Fraser Highway, but he is in a con ict of interest as he owns a business in downtown Aldergrove. And maybe we would get other businesses rather than just hair salons and pizza shops?

is property has been an eyesore for years. Why didn’t the councillors step up and have bylaws deal with it, not just recently comment about it? Next civic election we should vote for council-lors that will woprk for Aldergrove, not against it.

G. Whitlock, Aldergrove

We need a bigger poolEditor:Give me a break! Township council needs to give its collective

head a shake. We don’t need a rink at the site. We already have a rink that is perhaps due for a tune up, but services the current needs of the community.

What we do need is a pool, and a big pool. One that will not only service the community but will bring in revenue from top rated swimming events. is pool wouldn’t only be servicing Alder-grove, it would provide a service to residents of Abbotsford just east of Aldergrove just beyond Station Road.

Swim meets are not held weekly or monthly..they are seasonal, much like hockey and soccer and other sports. Changes are made for those events but the rest of the year it’s status quo. ere is huge potential to having a pool that can bring in local, provincial and international swimming competitions. We are so close to the Abbotsford Airport, that an internationally recognized swimming pool would be a huge bonus.

Stop with all the objections and start looking outside of the box. Aldergrove (as part of the Township) needs an in ux of revenue, and this is an opportunity to do just that, to put some life into this community.

Debbie Atkinson, Aldergrove

Fed up with spoiled starsEditor: Bre Lawrie is obviously having trouble handling the pressure of

being a baseball player in his home country. He recently went o on twi er blistering fans who he believes are unquali ed to level criticism of his play.

Lawrie had an exaggerated sense of self worth before he arrived in Toronto, and it has expanded there with his modicum of suc-cess. He will get paid millions to play a silly game in which he was lucky to have been randomly supplied with the skills to do so. What a great contribution to society. He is the one that deserves derision in light of the fact that in his profession one is considered an elite if his success rate at hi ing the ball is 30 percent. For those living and working in the real world such a performance standard would result in dismissal.

I doubt that Lawrie will develop the maturity to one day realize that it is the fans that put him in his mansions and expensive sports cars. I’m tired of spoiled, petulant athletes that blame others or complain about their good fortune.

Tim Opper, Aldergrove

Embarrassing behaviourEditor: As a Canadian I am embarrassed by my fellow Canadian shop-

pers at Costco Bellingham with their two or three jerry cans at the Costco gas station.

Do they realize how painful it is to wait for them to ll those three cans plus their vehicle?

Take a look around. Barely any American vehicles in the lineup. ey keep their mouths shut so as not to be rude. Why don’t we be a li le bit more courteous and put some voluntary limit on the amount of time we take for a re ll? Maybe even just one can if you really need it.

Contemporary dancers from the Aldergrove dance studio Kick It Up A Notch Academy of Dance were named the over-all winners of the Ultimate Peak Challenge at the Abbotsford Peak dance competition at the Abbey Arts Centre last week.

Studios from throughout the Fraser Valley were represented in over 1,000 different dances in the week-long event. The judges decide the overall first place pieces in each age category and these dancers are asked to perform in the Ultimate Peak Challenge. Out of the 1,000 dances, only 17 dances were given the honour of performing in the finale event.

With the overall highest

scores in their divisions, Kick It Up A Notch had the honour of being asked to showcase two different pieces in the premier event: a Division 2 jazz solo by Alaina Orr as well as a Division 4 senior contemporary piece, “Come Home” that shares the story of the relationship and dif-ficulties of having a loved one away at war.

When all the performances in the evening finale event were completed, it was Kick It Up A Notch’s “Come Home” that was named by the judges as the over-all winner.

“Just to be asked to perform in this event was such a big hon-our,” said studio director and choreographer Tonya Wejr, “but then to be recognized as the overall top dance in the entire competition… pretty much left me speechless. These girls have worked so hard this year and we were even down a dancer (due to injury) so to have them rise up like this makes me so proud.”

Wejr was also given two over-all choreography awards, includ-

ing one for the contemporary piece “Come Home”.

By being named the win-ner of the challenge, the studio now has the opportunity to per-form at the Provincial Honours Performance at the Red Robinson Theatre on May 26.

The dancers in “Come Home” are Jessica Haugen,

Jenny Bruschetto, Brooke Thompson, Mikaela Guemos, Bri-Lynn Guemos, Jessy Choi, Jennifer Ens, Cathy Oh, Ashley Taylor, Christine Weenk, Elise Nelson, and Erin Long.

Aldergrove Fair Days is holding three major events this year and they will all be bigger and bet-ter than ever for the 101st year of the fair tradition in Aldergrove.

First up this year will be the all-new Aldergrove FireFit Festival and Parade to be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26.

The Aldergrove FireFit Festival starts at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, with a Downtown Parade. There will be lots of great music, entertainment and food for families on both days in downtown Aldergrove, plus a dance for adults on the Saturday evening.

The Aldergrove FireFit Festival promotes busi-nesses in downtown Aldergrove and also helps promote the Fair in July. (This festival was previously called the June MiniFest and the

parade was previously held in July as part of the Aldergrove Fair Days.)

The opening cer-emonies of the Pacific Regional FireFit event commence at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Philip Jackman Park.

Aldergrove’s second annual FireFit event is an exciting, action-packed competition for firemen, based on fire-fighting tasks commonly per-formed in emergency situations.

Sunday’s events include a morning Soap Box Derby for ages five to 13 years, a Crazy Wheels Race for adults, and more FireFit tasks to deter-mine the Pacific Regional FireFit champion.

Summer Maintenance of Rural Boulevards and DitchesThe Township of Langley uses three full-time and one seasonal roadside grass mower for ditch mowing. This equipment has predetermined routes or an assigned area to follow. If the equipment is pulled away to do a specifi c request, it only lengthens the time it takes to fully complete all the rural boulevards and ditches.

If you have a request for mowing or brushwhacking, we ask that you be patient as we try to t the work schedule in as ef ciently as possible.

The Township, along with Provincial and Federal agencies, have classi ed open channel water systems into three categories:

Class A ditches are fi sh bearing and Class B ditches are fi sh habitat. Both of these categories require formal approval before any work can be completed.

Class C ditches are deemed to have no sh or sh habitat issues whatsoever and only require notifi cation for work to take place.

How or when a ditch is cleaned depends on its classi cation. Thank you for your understanding as we operate under these requirements.
