Standard Deviation Breakout

Stock price moves up or down—from the previous close—by the standard deviation specified in the Quality field. Note: Standard deviation for these alerts is based on a year's worth of volatility data—with recent data weighted more heavily, and the formula scaled so that "1" represents a standard deviation for one day.

Change in standard deviation from the previous close used to generate the alert. The default is 1. Always rounds up to the next integer.

Standard Deviation Breakdown

Crossed Daily Highs Resistance

Stock’s price crosses above or below any previous day’s high or low (for the first time since the end of that previous day). A subset of the high/low alerts, these are used to report an established new high/low—e.g. a new high from a 5-day high.

Number of days used to determine crossings. The default is 0, which will return all crossings based on the previous day’s high or low; a value of 365 will return results based on the 52-week high or low. Crossed Daily

Alert can show: Size Increasing – Number of shares is increasing for the large lot bid/ask Price Increasing – Price is increasing for the large lot bid/ask Price dropping – Price is dropping for the large lot bid/ask Note: These alerts are generated only for stocks with an average daily volume of less than 3,000,000 shares.

Number of shares in the bid/ask required to generate the alert. A value of 10,000 shares is the minimum, unless the stock typically trades under 1,000,000 shares per day, in which case the minimum value is 6,000.

Market Crossed

Bid price of a stock is higher than the ask price. These alerts are automatically filtered so that if the market is crossed several times in quick succession only one alert will be shown. Not intended for arbitrage—most crossed markets resolve in 1–2 seconds. The Crossed Market alert types are: Market Crossed – All crossings are reported Market Crossed Up – An ECN is reporting a higher bid than ask on the stock’s primary market Market Crossed Down – An ECN is reporting a lower ask than bid on the stock’s primary market

The spread required to generate the alert (default 0.0001)

Market Locked Bid and ask prices of a stock are the same. If the market is locked several times in quick succession, you’ll only be notified the first time.

Large Spread Alert will be generated if the specialist's spread for a NYSE stock suddenly gets large—$0.50 or more. If the spread changes multiple times in a short period, you’ll only be notified the first time.

The number of times trade activity occurs in a short period before an alert will be generated

Trading Below Specialist

Offer Stepping Down

The stock has a large number of shares on the offer. (The minimum size on the offer is different for different stocks.) The best offer price is exactly one penny above the last sale price. The sale price drops, and the large offer follows it. The prices must drop at least one more time in this way before the first alert is generated. Another alert is generated each successive time the price steps down in this way—with filtering added to remove noise.

NYSE Buy Imbalance

Occurs only near the end of the trading day; these are based on the specialist's market on close orders. If there are more shares desired on the buy side for a stock than the sell side it is a "buy imbalance." If more orders are on the sell side then the buy, then we call it a "sell imbalance."

Size of the imbalance as a percentage of the total number of shares traded that day for the stock

NYSE Sell Imbalance

Crossed Above Open

The default is 0, which will show every crossover; a value of 60 will return results only if the price remains above or below the close for 60 seconds before crossing again.

Crossed Above Open (Confirmed)

Generated any time a stock crosses above or below the open or the previous close. For opening crossovers, during the pre-market session, the previous day’s open will be used. For closing crossovers, during the post-market, the close of the current day’s regular session will be used. To increase the likelihood that each alert is significant, statistical information—based on time volume and price—is used to confirm the move. This can cause a slight delay between event and alert delivery.

Sector Breakout (From Open)

Reports a breakout or breakdown if a stock is performing better or worse—relative to its opening price—than the rest of the sector. Not available for indexes, or during the pre-market. Note: Alerts are based on an algorithm that seeks to identify an index best suited as an indicator for the stock, based on a comparison of intraday moves and other statistical information. The index is often specific to the stock’s sector, but may represent the broader market. For some stocks, no index is appropriate, and no results are returned.

1 minute volume spike

Similar to the High Relative Volume Alert, this alert triggers when volume is higher than normal for a time of day for a given stock compared to a historical baseline. However, the data is reviewed every minute so it may show an excess amount of alerts for thinly traded stocks

Ratio of the current volume over the historical volume at which an alert will be generated. A value of 1.5 is the default and minimum.

Strong Volume Volume for the stock is higher than normal for the day, relative to the average total daily volume over several recent days. By default, alerts are first generated when the average daily volume is reached, and then at each multiple thereafter.

Unusual Number of Prints

Alert is triggered when a stock generates unusually high bid, ask, and/or trade activity for the time of day. Activity must be at least five times higher than normal. Alerts are generated at increments of five (five times normal activity, 10 times, etc.).

Multiple of average activity—in bids, asks, and/or trades—at which an alert will be generated (minimum 5).

15-Minute Opening Range Breakout

Resistance and support are set at the high and low for a particular interval from the open. An alert is generated when the stock price breaks through either resistance (breakout) or support (breakdown). Note: The opening interval begins at the first bid, ask, or trade (not necessarily the start of trading). Also, to reduce false signals, there is a blackout period of one minute after the high and low are determined for the period.
