WE’VE BEEN HELPING QUEENSLAND FAMILIES SINCE 1840Whilst the history of our business dates back to 1840 as the first ever funeral business in Queensland, it was not until 1909 when Alexander Gow acquired the remaining shares from his partner Walter S. Barrett, that the Alex Gow brand would become Queensland’s first and oldest funeral business.
Four generations of the Gow family have worked in the business and today Alexander’s grandson Alistair and his children continue the tradition of family ownership and the high standards set by their predecessors. We believe that by being family-owned we are able to give a more personal service and be more flexible to the individual needs of our clients.
We live for our business and everything we do reflects our on-going commitment to providing affordable, quality services to our community. With four locations across SE Queensland Alex Gow Funerals is close by to assist you and your family 24hrs a day.

Before they leave the wake, mourners often make plans to see each other again or to reach out in various ways to help the primary mourners. This helps extend the social support value of the funeral and reminds people of the need to continue to be present to each other in the weeks, months and years ahead.Sometimes families are reticent to have a wake after the funeral because they are concerned about additional costs or unsure whether anyone will come. It is important to recognise the value of the wake, even if just a few people attend (often, families are surprised by the fact that more people attend than they anticipated). Cookies, coffee and punch may be all that’s needed. What’s really important is the opportunity to bond with other mourners. Also, some families with only loose ties to a place of worship may not realise that there is often a committee or Ladies Guild in place to handle food at the wake. Many funeral home owners have now created hospitality areas in their funeral homes, these are warm, inviting spaces they can offer families to have their wake following the funeral.Facilitating the catering of food is another valuable service they offer. These all combine to help create a transformative experience.
At the outset of this article series, I explained that the meaningful funeral ceremony is a tapestry.Made up of a number of various elements, it creates a transformative experience that is much greater than the sum of its individual parts. While each family’s ceremony will and should be a unique tapestry, it can only be a tapestry if it draws on a full repertoire of possible elements. We have now reviewed all of the funeral elements included in this heart tapestry, save one – the wake. Most funerals formally come to an end when
the mourners gather to share a meal and talk about the person who died. As you know, these gatherings can take place anywhere, including the funeral home, a church meeting room, restaurant or the home of a friend or family member.
At the wake, a natural “telling of the stories” of the person’s life and death takes
place. This helps mourners once again acknowledge the reality and finality of death
and recall the person who died.Giving expression to the pain of the loss is another
central need of mourning that the wake helps facilitate. In fact, all thoughts and feelings are welcome at the wake.
People often laugh and hug one another, offering each other support. While there are often tears of sadness, the mood may begin to evolve into a sense of peace and a soothing of souls, imbuing the funeral with meaning. In fact, you may notice that people look different at the wake than they did during the other parts of the funeral. They are often more relaxed and less tense. They may even seem joyful and able to glimpse transcendence.Memory tables at the wake also aid recall. They help capture the personality of the person who died and the unique relationships he or she had. Some families enjoy continuing to show Power-Point slide shows or memory videos. This is another way to personalise the gathering, and it often inspires reflection on the life of the person who died. Special food items may be served to recognise and share culture and tradition or it may simply be the favourite foods of the person who died.

Sometimes the pressures of life bought about by ill-health, a disability or depression impact on our motivation, desire or ability to cook. Often, it’s the last thing we can or want to do.
Our sense of independence can be challenged by admitting we might need a little help. Meals providers are often told, “I wish I’d got meals sooner”.
A common problem facing people adapting to changed circumstances is poor nutrition and or weight loss. These often lead to more complications. A few decent meals a
week make a huge difference. The easiest way to find out about services is to ring your local Meals on Wheels service. Numbers listed below, they will be more than happy to explain how their particular service operates, and to get you started.

Puzzles Can Help Your Brain
Scientific studies have proven that working with puzzles and other logic games helps improve reasoning, memory and logic. They promote a form of synergy between the left and right brain, termed by psychologists as a “full brain approach”. This can result in better memory, deeper learning and better recall. Puzzles appeal to our creative and logical minds, offering a full brain work out, especially for retirees who don’t have a daily work commitment.
Alex Gow recognises this and hope that by offering this Puzzle Book with up to three-month’s worth of fun brain exercises, we can actually help you improve your brain vibrancy as you get older. One of the biggest fears for us all as we get older is losing our mental sharpness, possibly developing dementia, Alzheimer’s or other mental illnesses – but by giving our brain a moderate workout on a frequent basis we can help hold off the onset of some of these issues.
Puzzles and games also instigate social interaction and communication. Doing puzzles together is a pleasurable experience for all participants helping to maintain social and communicative skills. Science has also shown that when a puzzle is finally completed there is a feeling of satisfaction and dopamine is released in the brain, as a kind of reward system for our efforts.
Please enjoy your FREE Alex Gow Puzzle Book. Remember all the answers and solutions can be found on our web site www.alexgowfunerals.com.au They are published at the beginning of each month along with a couple of bonus Questions that will give you an extra entry in the monthly draw for the $100 Coles voucher.
