About Me

I am an architecture student from Louisville, KY with a passion for my studies. For as long as I have known, architecture is what I wanted to do with my life. It was not until a few years ago that I realized that my dream is to use my architecture education for the themed entertainment design industry, particularly Walt Disney Imagineering.

I am always interested in learning new things. I once read about the history of traffi c lights because I was curious. I have started to learn about fabrication of furniture with 3d-printed joints. Whern I travel to new places I look for museums and other learning opportunities like architecture tours at my destination. Travel is always something I enjoy. I am very blessed to have been able to travel to may parts of the world, and will jump at the opportunity to go to places that interest me.

I am loyal to a fault with a constant desire to do what is best for the company I am employed under. I am confi dent in my work but I am always happy to take advice from others. I love being helpful to others, and I am always fi rst to jump in and help someone when they ask for it.

Abel Construction

Internship

Abel Construction is a general contractor based in Louisville, KY. I worked in the design department alongside licensed architects and designers who blessed me with a great fi rst internship where I learned a myriad of things in both the design and construction industry from punchlists, cost analysis, to historic documentation.

The casework had to serve two functions: to hold books and documents while displaying historical artifacts.

The room also had to function as an offi ce space so special casework had to be designed for offi ce equipment.

Creative Arts Unlimited

Internship

Creative Arts Unlimited is a design-build company that designs immersive entertainment spaces for museums, theme parks, corporate visitor centers, hospitals, and many more. I worked for Creative Arts Unlimited for two weeks in their design department where I was given a project to work on by myself with periodic guidance from the Creative Services Director and the President/Design Principal.

The pictures you see are interior renderings of a proposal for the renovation of the reading room at the Boca Raton History Center. I was tasked with researching the architectural period in which Boca Raton was founded and implementing those design features into the renovation plans.

The ceilings in the main part of the room were proposed to have murals painted between the cypress beams to resemble mansions like Ca’ d’Zan.

The competition took place on the University Green where students actually used our Sukkah as a casual sitting area.

Our Sukkah had a form-fi tting bench lined with fl owers to feel closer to nature.

Annual Sukkah

Design Competition

During the fall of my second year, my friends and I decided to enter the annual Sukkah design competition held by the on-campus Jewish faith organization for the celebration of Sukkot. We competed against four other teams of architecture students, all of whom were older than us, and came in fi rst place.

Our design focused on a column that was electrically lit to symbolize the light of God leading the Jewish people to the promised land. We also wanted to experiment with wood form work by creating wavy walls that allowed natural light from the sides. We worked all day and all night for about a week, and it was a great bonding experience as well as a great learning experience for fabrication.

We built our Sukkah from this scale model with no actual drawings.

We use acrylic samples with different colors and textures for the lit column.

Our luxury tower had more ammenities than the subsidized housing because we had a realistic economic understanding of how this building would be sold.

This elevation shows how our building is a bridge between neighboring luxury housing and subsidized housing.

ARC 305 Housing Studio

Fall 2016 The project for this semester was to design a housing complex in Miami Beach that contained luxury apartments for young professionals and subsidized housing for retirement-age individuals. My partner and I focused on creating a housing complex that allowed for both demographics to live together but have their own separate spaces by constructing two buildings and creating private parks for each building. We also focused on preparation for sea-level rise by raising all housing units two stories above grade and creating private parks on a plinth and a public park under the plinth.

This project was done on Revit 2017 with Adobe Photoshop for fi nal renderings. My partner and I were the only pair in our studio that used Revit for this project.

ARC 203 Urban Design Studio

Fall 2015

This semester’s project was focused on educating my classmates and me about New Urbanism and how to put it into practice. Our assignment was to take a part of the Hialeah neighborhood in Miami, Florida and apply new Urbanism while keeping its industrial character.

I took a keen interest in two aspects of the project; housing and alleys. I created the alley system seen in the masterplan as well as the housing layout seen in the bottom left corner of the master plan. I design this region to be a secure block with larger buildings on the ends of the blocks and single family housing in between.

This was a sketch that I drew early on. I wanted to lay out a system of blocks that created an inner community.

Page 16: Alex Underwood's Portfolio

16

My design evolved over several weeks until I created the shelter I wanted.

Our syllabus challenged us to use only white and orange paint for the project.

ARC 204 Structure Studio

Spring 2016

This semester was a design studio focused on understanding basic structural materials such as wood, concrete, and steel. The semester was broken into two design projects. The project you see is the fi rst of those two projects. We were assigned to design a wooden beach structure with a specifi c amount of supplies and we could not use any materivals that were not specifi ed on the list. It was described as Chopped for architecture.

My design is inspired by structures of the South Pacifi c with an a-frame roof and an angled center beam. I also took infl uence from the lifeguard huts on Miami Beach that sit on sleds so that this structure could be towed to a new location.

The design took on several forms after being infl uenced by a precedent.

Our site was located across from the Key West Cemetery in Solares Hill.

We used the same iron-work through out the entire project.

ARC 102 Key West Studio

Spring 2015

The semester was a design studio focused on understanding architectural vernacular in order. The studio was broken into two design projects. This project was the second of the two. The goal was to design a loggia for a park. My partner and I decided to concentrate on the historic aspects of Key West, particularly the Florida East Coast Railway Extension.

The design is inspired by the train stations of Paris, France and the Long Key Viaduct. The bridge in the plans goes over an artifi cial lake that is covered with terrazzo fl ooring that is colored to look like train tracks. The same look carries into the loggia to simulate a train station.

The model was built to show how the roof struction

worked.

Hobbies and Interests

I dabble in many hobbies in my free time. I am always learning new things like photography, history, or theme park design. Theme park design is more than a hobby though. It is a study that I have taken upon myself in order to step towards my goal of becoming a Walt Disney Imagineer.

The images you see are from past experiences that are glimpses into my interests and hobbies. They are what I consider opportunities to become a more knowledgeable individual, architect, and member of society.
