SOCIO/ECOLOGICAL RESEARCHSOCIO/ECOLOGICAL RESEARCHEcology is a system of processes of change, and it belongs to larger, global systems. Inversely, it is a system made of many sub systems and interrelationships, forming a fluid model of the universe. Human-ity is another separate, similar system which exists as a composition of sub-processes and forces. Within the world, these two systems, both ecological and human, are bound together and act upon each other. The two are intertwined. Through time, the two grow, in opposition, together, apart, etc. New relationships and change come in time.

There exists, at LIBERTY STATE PARK, a physical rift between the human and ecological component. This self-imposed separation from the processes of the site is due to an emergent self-awareness of the neglect and damage inflicted upon the site. Humanity stratified and separated from the remediating site, or more specifically, has become a removed human agency. This project seeks to reintegrate the human component in terms of a social remediation of the site. The site is remediating itself, biologically, but is humanity ready to reintro-duce itself to the site? The project hopes to foster a change in humanitys fundamental understanding of how ecological systems evolve, by subjecting human users to geological time-scales (often much longer than human life-spans). The project seeks to alter the way research is done, in favor of a more subjective, long term process.

Architecturally, the project is investigating the temporal procedures which relate a human to the landscape, understood as a system of processes and their larger contexts. How can exposing geological time and extending human time on the site bring about social remediation, or a greater understanding of humanitys impact (as a system) on the systems of ecology.

Each structure is infiltrated and constructed as the active ecologies overtake the passive. When they come into research range, the interior of the outer lattice-shell is refitted with a laboratory ENCLOSURE. Here researchers study the plants and the floral takeover of the LATTICE-SHELLS/ENVIRONMENT to understand how the forest reconstitutes itself and evolves over time. Once the active ecology overtakes the node-position and approaches the next on the grid, THAT STRUCTURE IS INHABITED AND REFITTED while the older one becomes an archive of the plant life that surrounds it.

UNFOLDING URBANISMMASTERPLAN + HOUSING FOR NEWARKOnce one of the busiest places in America, the Downtown core of Newark lies

blighted and vacant.

Taking clues from and playing off of recent developments, this plan utilizes

an internal pedestrian mall flanked with mixed use retail/residential to

stimulate growth and to designate a new urban district that aims to

rejuvinate the city into a zone of 24 hour activation.

The pedestrian mall optimistically bridges the culturally ripe Ironbound

Section of Newark and Penn Station with Broad street, a still bustling mixed

use artery. The trajectories of the mall from their end points are offset and

pinwheel at the center, culminating in a large plaza to accommodate and

The housing proposal is seen as the culminating mixed use project of the masterplan, adjacent to the main plaza and containing the largest res / com population. Work focused on scales of division and reconnection between the two.

JAMES STREET TOWN HOUSE / DOCTORS OFFICEThe townhouse wrestles with notions of public space by lifting up privacy to emphasize community. The bottom fl oor has a doctors offi ce and a small outdoor area carved out of the mass of the house. In the residence above, the more private activities in the house are pushed toward the street in a reversion of the normal dialogue with the city. This house is a polemic about modern dwellings as escape. The entire exterior facade wraps around the house and is made of translucent channel glass to admit maximum light and to give a sense of intimacy with the street. The home becomes an act of faith with the city, posing a genuine facade activated by the residents lives and allowing the public to share the space of the ground. This is an attempt to create and question a new approach to the citys role in the lives of the individual, and vice versa.
