The Walls Around Us is a ghostly story of suspense told in two voices—one still living and one long dead. On the outside, there’s Violet, an eighteen-

year-old dancer days away from the life of her dreams when something threatens to expose the shocking truth of her achievement. On the inside, within the walls of a girls’ juvenile detention center, there’s Amber, locked up for so long she can’t imagine freedom. Tying these two worlds together is Orianna, who holds the key to unlocking all the girls’ darkest mysteries.

We hear Amber’s story and Violet’s, and through them Orianna’s, first from one angle, then from another, until gradually we begin to get the whole picture—which is not necessarily the one that either Amber or Violet wants us to see.

Nova Ren Suma tells a supernatural tale of guilt and innocence, and what happens when one is mistaken for the other.

PRAISE FOR IMAGINARY GIRLS:H “ A surreal and dreamy world where magical thinking

is carried to a chilling extreme.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

PRAISE FOR 17 & GONE:“ Suma’s exquisite sentence-level writing and fine eye for

creepy detail are in abundant evidence.” —Kirkus Reviews

NOVA R E N S U M A has an MFA in fiction from Columbia University and a BA in writing and photography from Antioch College and has been awarded a fiction fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is the author of Imaginary Girls and 17 & Gone. Nova lives in New York City, and her website is www.novaren.com.

NOVA REN SUMA

The Walls Around Us“ Ori’s dead because of what happened out behind the theater, in the tunnel made

out of trees. She’s dead because she got sent to that place upstate, locked up with those monsters. And she got sent there because of me.”

Arlo Brodie loves being on the football field, getting hit hard and hitting back harder. That’s where he belongs, leading his team to championships,

becoming “Starlo” on his way to the top. Arlo’s dad cheers him on, but his mother quotes head injury statistics and refuses to watch. Arlo’s girlfriend tries to make him see the danger; when that doesn’t work, she calls time-out on their relationship. Even Arlo’s coaches begin to track his hit count, almost ready to pull him off the field. But Arlo’s not worried about collisions. The cheering crowds and the adrenaline rush convince Arlo that everything is OK—in spite of the pain, pounding, dizziness, and confusion.

In Hit Count, Chris Lynch explores the American love affair with contact sports and our attempts to come to terms with clear evidence of real danger.

PRAISE FOR PIECES:H “ Each character springs fully formed off the page, and

Lynch’s irreverent, inventive dialogue crackles . . . Exceptional.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Corinne La Mer isn’t afraid of anything. Not scorpions, not the boys who tease her, and certainly not jumbies. They’re just tricksters parents make up

to frighten their children. Then one night Corinne chases an agouti all the way into the forbidden forest. Those shining yellow eyes that followed her to the edge of the trees, they couldn’t belong to a jumbie. Or could they?

When Corinne spots a beautiful stranger speaking to the town witch at the market the next day, she knows something unexpected is about to happen. And when this same beauty, called Severine, turns up at Corinne’s house, cooking dinner for Corinne’s father, Corinne is sure that danger is in the air. She soon finds out that bewitching her father, Pierre, is only the first step in Severine’s plan to claim the entire island for the jumbies. Corinne must call on her courage and her friends and learn to use ancient magic she didn’t know she possessed to stop Severine and save her island home.

With its able and gutsy heroine, lyrical narration, and inventive twist on the classic Haitian folktale “The Magic Orange Tree,” The Jumbies will be a favorite of fans of Breadcrumbs, A Tale Dark and Grimm, and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

T R AC E Y BA P T IS T E lived in Trinidad until she was fifteen; she grew up on jumbie stories and fairy tales. She is a former teacher who works as a writer and editor and lives in Englewood, New Jersey. The Jumbies is her first middle-grade novel. Her website is www.traceybaptiste.com.

TRACEY BAPTISTE

The JumbiesA spine-tingling tale rooted in Caribbean folklore that will have readers holding their breath as they fly through its pages.

The Summer of Letting Go

Four years ago, Francesca Schnell’s young brother drowned when she should have been watching. This summer she’s about to turn sixteen, but guilt keeps

her stuck in the past. Meanwhile, her best friend, Lisette, is moving on—with the boy Francesca secretly wants—and her father may be having an affair. But then Francesca meets and begins babysitting Frankie Sky, a four-year-old boy who bears a heavy resemblance to her brother, and she begins to wonder if Frankie could be his reincarnation. As the summer goes on it starts to seem possible for Francesca to forgive herself, grow up, and even fall in love, whether or not she solves the riddle of Frankie Sky.

“Resonates with real feeling.” —The New York Times Book Review

“ A touching and beautiful story.” —Justine magazine

“ With a light, deft hand, Polisner gives Frankie’s world touches of humor, gravitas, and teen-centered reality.” —Booklist

“ First-rate realistic fiction with plenty of heart.” —School Library Journal

“ The prose is gentle but evocative, and Frankie Sky’s childlike exuberance and occasional misconceptions add heart and humor . . . [The Summer of Letting Go is] both hopeful and careful—like Francesca herself.” —Kirkus Reviews

“ A beautiful story of heartbreak and hope.” —Daisy Whitney, author of The Mockingbirds, Starry Nights

The Art of SecretsNOW IN PAPERBACK!

“Relationships, secrets and lies aplenty for caper-loving fans.” —Kirkus Reviews

When Saba Khan’s apartment burns in a mysterious fire, possibly a hate crime, her high school rallies around her. Then a quirky

piece of art donated to a school fund-raising effort for the Khans is revealed to be an unknown work by a famous artist, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and Saba’s life turns upside down again. Through monologues, journal entries, interviews, articles, and official documents, the cast of characters reveal how they see what happened.

“ This darkly ambiguous, provocative novel highlights several themes worthy of discussion, including the destructive power of secrets and the politics of generosity.” —The Horn Book Magazine

“ A clever mystery told in many voices . . . Greed and jealousy go head-to-head with kindness and good intentions . . . Everybody has secrets.” —Shelf Awareness

“ Through unique journal entries, articles, and interviews, a tangled web of unusual secrets unfolds.” —Teen Vogue
