Alkali BulletinAlkali Bulletin(For Restricted Circulation) December 2018Volume XL No. 12
Dear Reader,
The government is developing a roadmap for achieving USD 1 trillion manufacturing economy by 2025-26. The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) and CII jointly organised a discussion session to prepare an action plan in December 2018. The global chemical market (including fertilizers & pharmaceuticals) was estimated at USD 5 trillion in 2017. The Indian chemical industry accounts for just about 3% of the world chemical market. The current size of the Indian chemical industry is estimated at USD 163 billion and is targeted to contribute USD 300 billion or 30% to the targeted USD 1 trillion manufacturing economy (as against its contribution of about 13.5% at present). This will mean doubling the size of the industry in about seven years with an ambitious CAGR of about 12%. The discussion session was chaired by the Secretary, Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals. The recommendations to DIPP at the end of the day included, inter alia, issues relating to technology upgradation, exploring the option of reverse SEZ for feedstock, setting up dedicated chemical infrastructure and customising trade policy specifically addressing the challenges of the chemicals sector, specially FTAs.
Mr. Anil Kumar retired from DCM Shriram Ltd. this month. He joined the DCM Group in 1973 and completed about 46 years of service. Mr. Anil Kumar served as AMAI President for two terms, from 2016 to 2018 during which period the Association many firsts for the industry. The most notable achievement was the notification issued by the government in April 2018 mandating use of the IS mark on imports and sale of caustic soda in India. Mr. Anil Kumar led many discussions with the government before this came to fruition. His tenure as President also saw AMAI hosting an international conference on chlorochemicals in March 2017 at Vadodara. The event was organised in association with CCAON and witnessed record participation. The conference brought to fore the opportunities for chlorochemicals manufacturing in India.
Mr. Anil Kumar represented the Association at various forums in India and abroad, very effectively articulating the achievements and concerns of the industry. The Association grew in strength and stature under his leadership. AMAI wishes him a healthy and long life.
AMAI is organising a seminar on “Automation & controls to optimise operations and safety in chlor-alkali industry” on 25th & 26th March 2019 at Bharuch, Gujarat. Automation and controls are gaining importance in not only ensuring consistency in production and reducing variability but also in improving safety. The chlor-alkali operations are moving towards higher levels of optimisation and safety. The seminar will attempt to cover new advancements in automation and control. Details of the event are given inside.
