ALKAR STEEL
Location: Warren, MI
At Alkar Steel the client desired an innovative design solution to transform their office
space. The inspiration from the company’s fabrication of steel encouraged a solution of
using an open ceiling design verses a traditional drop ceiling. The open ceiling would
emphasize the exposed steel beams, web joists and wind braces. The exposed steel
endoskeleton of the building echoes the feelings of an industrial and machined look
representing the brand of Alkar Steel. The strategy to embrace and reveal the steel-to-
steel connections generated a need to create a custom brushed steel paint normally
intended for automobiles to match the existing exposed steel. The material choices for
the interior, such as the carpet and colors, were thoughtfully selected to avoid having a
warehouse look or feel for the space. Opening up the ceiling and adding glass
partitions for the walkway through the building aided in not only bringing in natural
light but also providing an outdoor view. To complete the renovation the sign for the
company’s logo is cut from steel to reflect the essential spirit and craft of Alkar Steel.
To complement the character of the exposed steel, a custom carpet was designed to
coordinate and collaborate and enhance the expression of the forms. The bright, bold
colors were chosen not just to contrast the steel but also to offset and soften the
coldness and rawness with the expression of warm and inviting hues. The glass
partitions help further emphasize the vibrant colors and showcase a cohesive design as
well as help with way finding and unify the space visually with an unmistakable rhythm.
The defining architectural appearance was accomplished primarily by merging and
balancing the functional with the whimsical.
