Iceland-Glacier Walks and Northern Lights
February 1st, 2017: Sighteeing Over a scenic route we reach Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. We stroll around the country’s most sacred site, home of the oldest existing parliament in the world, the Alþingi, and major events in our history. Thingvellir is a place of fascinating natural beauty, one of the most geologically spectacular, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right on Iceland’s largest lake, Thingvallavatn. The Great Atlantic rift is clearly visible; a rift that is slowly pulling Iceland apart along tectonic plates and you can literally walk between the American and Eurasian continental plates. We drive to the mighty Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), perhaps the most beautiful in the
country. We walk around Gullfoss Falls, where the river Hvitá tumbles 32 meters (105 ft) in a double cascade. When the sun is shining, you’re likely to see a rainbow. After an optional lunch stop we explore the geothermal active valley of Haukadalur which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. This otherworldly hot spring area is covered with multicoloured pools of water and mud. Strokkur, the Great Geysir’s little brother, is spouting to a height of about 25 metres (82 ft) and erupts at about 5-7
different types of birds, geese, and whooper swans and ducks mallards. Then we return to the city hall looking at a topographical map of Iceland, if it is out on display. Now we drive to the harbour where we find a large fleet of whale watching and fishing boats in all sizes. We drive past the Catholic Church and enjoy then the panoramic
view over Reykjavik, the fjord and mountains from the balcony at the Pearl. We head to the outskirts of Reykjavík with a different view over Breiðholt and the capital city. Further on we reach the geothermal outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur to learn what Icelanders are doing with the warm water from the hot springs. This is the recreational area of the city, with most sport facilities, the botanical garden, the farm animal zoo and Family Park. Last but not least we drive past the sculpture museum and
garden of Ásmundur Sveinsson. before heading to you hotel for the next 5 nights. Meals: On Own

beautifully sited village of Vík í Mýrdal, the southernmost village in Iceland. After lunch break we reach the volcanic black sandy beach of Reynisfjara that is famous for its
bird species including puffins. This location offers impressive rock formations and caves, spectacular high surf of the North Atlantic and one of the worlds most beautiful black lava beach. From Reynisfjara
you can enjoy stunning views of picturesque Dyrhólaey promontory, a 120m spur of rock and cut into a natural arch by Atlantic breakers, that stands in water deep enough to allow boats to pass through. Meals: Breakfast February 3rd, 2017: Free Day Optional tour: $90 BORGARFJÖRÐUR VALLEY We drive along the shores of the scenic Hvalfjörður Fjord, stopping at the traditional and famous wool factory of Álafoss for a little factory outlet shopping offering best Icelandic woollen products and different handicrafts of local artists. We are passing the old extinct whaling station before we reach the peaceful farming district and valley
minute intervals. Then we drive on to Skálholt, the site of an ancient bishopric, and for centuries Iceland’s main cultural centre. We pass the greenhouse town of Hveragerði and continue over the mountain pass Hellisheiði, an area with large lava fields and steaming valleys. Passing the geothermal power station Hellisheiðarvirkjun we learn how
Icelanders use the energy from the earth, so called green energy, for heating their homes. Tonight we will take a northern lights tour. We drive in the twilight chasing the Aurora Borealis. This is a mystery-filled tour. The destination is not decided in advance, since we will try to find the best place away from the city lights. We travel into the wilderness outside Reykjavík to search for the northern lights. On a
clear night and with a little luck we can see the lights swirl around in dramatic shapes across the night sky – truly an amazing sight. This tour is subject to weather conditions. We reserve the right to reschedule if the circumstances are not favourable. Sightings of the Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. Meals: Breakfast
February 2nd, 2017: Free Day: Enjoy a free day to explore: Optional Tour: $135 SOUTH SHORE ADVENTURE We drive over a lava plateau and through the Threngsli pass, descending onto the southern coastal lowlands and crossing Ölfusá, Iceland’s most voluminous river. Eyrarbakki is an attractive and picturesque coastal village with many old wooden houses. The route passes through some of the prettiest countryside in Iceland with fields, farms and villages towards the Eyjafjalla and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in South Iceland. We reach Seljalandsfoss, a graceful ribbon-like waterfall, which drops from an overhanging
lava cliff. If you step carefully, you can walk behind it, but be prepared to get wet. We continue to the impressive Skógafoss waterfall, that’s more than 60m high (197 ft)
and belongs to the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Then on to the ice-wall of Sólheimajökull, where we can walk up to the glacier, before we reach the
of Borgarfjörður, the setting of Egil’s Saga, framed by mountains and glaciers that are backdrops to many of the best salmon rivers in Iceland. We explore a multitude of natural springs under a birch covered lava field, which creates a waterfall of hundreds of meters wide, the magnificent Hraunfossar (Lava Falls), seemingly appearing out of no-
where across the bank. A 10 minutes walk up the river is the Barnafoss (Children’s Fall), which has carved out
strange figures from the rock. We con-tinue to historic Reykholt, where Snorri Sturluson lived, a brilliant 13th-century writer/scholar. Next stop is the Deildar-tunguhver, one of the world’s biggest hot springs. We go to Grábrók volcano, a 3000 years old crater surrounded by a
nicely moss covered lava field – possi-ble to walk up to the rim of the crater (20 min) for a splendid view over the lava field and its region. There is the possibility to stop at the Icelandic Set-tlement centre in Borgarnes where in
two exhibitions you learn the Saga of The Settlement of Iceland and Iceland´s most famous Viking and first poet Egill Skallagrimsson. Re-turn to Reykjavik via the Hvalfjörður fjord tunnel. Tonight you may wish to take another op-tional tour to see the northern lights, weather permitting Meals: Breakfast February 4th, 2017: Iceland to Seattle: In the morning after breakfast, We are off to the Reykjanes peninsula and the Blue Lagoon which is 100% powered by Iceland’s clean geother-
