IES - Indian Engineering Services

• IES is the most sought-after careers for the engineering graduates in India.

• IES exam is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) in the month of June.

• Online application forms are usually available in March end.

• Educational Qualifications: A degree in Engineering from a recognised university or equivalent.

IES – Examination Process

• First Stage (Objective Type) – 200 Marks – One exam on General Ability Test

• Part A: General English

• Part B: General Studies

• Seconds Stage (Objective Type) – 200+200 Marks – Two exams based on the category for which you are

appearing.

• Third Stage (Subjective Type) – 200+200 Marks – Two exams based on the category for which you are

appearing.

• Fourth Stage (Interview) – 200 Marks – Personality Test

PSU - Public Sector Undertakings

• PSUs are Government owned companies in which Central or State Government own a majority (51% or more) of the equity shares.

• These Government owned companies run like private companies and share profits with Government.

• Provides one of the best remunerations, compared to the other Government Jobs.

PSU – Selection Process • Usually PSUs have their own recruitment tests for the

selection of engineers.

• Many of these public sector companies also recruit engineers based on the GATE scores, followed by GD and interviews.

• Cutoffs mainly depend on your branch as well as the number of vacancies.

• If you focus on GATE, you will have good chances to be selected in multiple PSUs.

G.A.T.E. - Graduate Aptitude Test in

Engineering

• An entrance exam, which tests your Aptitude in your Engineering branch.

• Provides financial assistance for your higher studies.

• Gives you a good chance to learn from the world class professors.

Career Opportunities After G.A.T.E.

• M.E./M.Tech/M.S. degree from IISC/IITs followed by a descent job, or a PSU job with descent salary.

• You can also directly apply for PhD after getting a good rank in GATE. Selection is mainly based on your performance in Interviews.

• Opportunities to work with world’s best research labs after finishing PhD.

What is the correct time to start

● Prepare those subjects well, which are

common to GATE, in the semester itself.

How to start preparing for

G.A.T.E.?

● Analyze GATE previous year papers to get an idea about what to study and how to study.

● After completing each topic in a subject, find the questions related to that topic in previous year papers and solve them.

● If you find some topics to be difficult then practice them multiple times.

Which subjects are most important

for G.A.T.E.?

● Almost all subjects!

● Start preparing those subjects first which

you like most.

● It will give you confidence and an idea

about how to prepare other subjects.

What’s package we get after

graduating from IISc/IITs?

• Depends on you, as well as your branch!

• For Computer Science graduates, the

average package is about 12 LPA. The

highest package goes beyond 20 LPA.

Can Non-CS students appear for

G.A.T.E. Computer Science?

• Yes!

• Many people have done this earlier, and

got admission in IISc/IITs.

• You just need to give some more efforts

compared to computer science students.

● Study with standard books.

● Prepare your own notes - Extremely useful for last minute revision.

● Use public forums like FB groups to discuss problems with others.

● Solve only GATE previous year problems.

● Practice to solve GATE previous year papers within 2 hours.

Points to remember for getting a

good rank in G.A.T.E. [Contd.] ● Try to find out what kind of mistakes you usually

make.

● Practice to read the questions carefully. Sometimes you need to read the question multiple times.

● Questions are usually simple, but very tricky.

● You are supposed to think deeply to solve even a very simple problem.

● Usually the questions which look very difficult are the most easier ones and vice versa.

Points to remember for getting a

● The number of mistakes you make will decide your

rank.

● Keep your mind relaxed and give it a chance to think properly before coming to the answer.

● Use 75% of your time to solve the paper and 25% time to recheck it.

● Remember that your competition is only with yourself.
