Pension Shake Up

From April 2011, UK pensioners will no longer have to use personal pension pots to buy annuities and will now have far greater choice and control of how to take their pensions, dependent on their individual circumstances. It is one of the biggest shake ups of UK pensions in 35 years.

Changes to UK Annuity Purchase Rules in 2011Undercurrentregulations,pensionershavenochoicebuttoconvertpersonalpensionsintoannuitieswhichprovidesadefinedincomeforlife.Underthenewannuitypurchaserules,however,thecompulsoryelementwillbescrapped.FromApril2011,consumerswillbegivenmoreflexibilityinhowtheychoosetousetheirretirementsavings.Theycan,forexample,stillconverttoannuitiesiftheywish,butwillalsobegivenmoreoptionssuchasincomedraw-downandcontinuedpensioninvestment.Therearealsonewtaxadvantagesworthexploring.AnnuitiesAnannuityisaffectivelya‘promisetopay’fromaninsurancecompany,wherebyyouwillgivethemyourpensionpotandtheywillgiveyouanincomefortheremainderofyourlife.Thisincomelevelwillbedeterminedbyanumberoffactors,age,gender(althoughthiswillnotbeafactorfromDecember2012),health,andthenotheroptions,forexampleindexation,spousesbenefitandguaranteedperiods.Oftenlabelledunfairforanumberofreasons,notleastbecauseapensionerdyingsoonafterbuyingonelosesmostoftheirlifesavingstotheannuityprovider.Anothernegativefactoristhatannuitiesareatanhistoriclow,a£100,000pensionpotbuysanannualincomeofjust£5000pacomparedto£10,000in1995,meaningyoumustliveatleast20yearstoreceiveyourpensionpotback.What are the Income Drawdown Pension Rules?Althoughconsumerswillnotbeforcedtoannuitisepensionsavingsfrom2011andcould,asanalternative,drawdownincomeascashlumpsums,therearestillrulestobefollowed.Thesehavebeensetintoplacetotryandavoidpeoplerunningoutofretirementincomeandbecomingdependenton

statebenefits.Highearnersandthoseoncompanypensionschemesmaybegivenmoreflexibilityunderthenewrules.Who Will Benefit From the 2011 Changes to Annuity Purchase Rules?Althoughmanypeoplewillbepleasednottohavetobuyanannuity,thebenefitsofthenewsystemseemtobeloadedtowardshigherearners.Trueflexibilityunderthechangedruleswillonlybegiventothosewhomeettheminimumincomeregulation.Theycanthenchoosehowtodrawdowntheirpersonalpensions.Thosethatcannotmeetthislimitmaybefreedfromthecommitmentofbuyinganannuitybutmaynotseemuchchangetoincomelevelsinretirement.Theirdrawdownwillbelimitedtothesamekindsofratesthattheywouldbepaidbyanannuity,dependingonthevalueoftheirpensionpot.Theymay,however,beabletobenefitfrominvestingforlonger,havegreaterinvestmentchoice,takead-hocpayments,changesalsogivemoreflexibilitytothosethatdowishtobuyanannuitybutthatwanttochoosewhentheydosototryandwaitforrisesinincomerates.Will UK Pensioners Continue to Buy Annuities as a Source of Retirement Income?Whatisimportant,isthatproperadviceissoughtfromanIndependentspecialist,anannuityshouldalwaysbepurchasedaftercomparingthe‘wholeofmarket’,ashugevariantscanexistinwhatyourcurrentpensionprovideroffers,andtheopenmarket.Everypolicyholderhastherighttoshoparound.Withregardthedrawdownroute,again,anindependentspecialistwillbeabletohelpassesswhetheradrawdownissuitable,andifsorecommendaproviderandmangeyourpensiongoingforward.

If you watch/record television programmes via an aerial from the Ridge Hill (Much Marcle) transmitter then you are going to need to retune or upgrade your existing equipment.
