Bright SparksThis year sees the 35th anniversary of a group in

Colwall that’s become a cornerstone of village life. Bright Sparks pre-school began in 1975 and since then many hundreds of children have attended the many thousands of sessions that have been held

in the village hall.ouractivity’.‘Childrencanstartwithusattheageoftwoandahalf,andcontinueuntiltheystartschool.Wecanhelpallchildrenincludingthosewhohavespecialneeds.’BrightSparkshasalwaysrunfromthevillagehall,butnowthere’sanambitiousplantomoveintonewaccommodationadjacenttothelocalprimaryschool.JeanBryant,who’stheChairofBrightSparksisoverseeingtheplanandsaysitshouldofferafantasticfacilityforfamiliesinthearea.‘Itsallveryexciting!’shesays,‘weandtheschoolhopeverymuchtobringaboutevengreaterco-operationand

linksbybeingbasednexttoeachother.PlanshavebeendrawnupforthelongertermwithadditionalPrimarySchoolclassrooms,butwithcurrentfinancialrestraintswemayhavetoacceptaslightlyscaleddownmodelfortheshorttermatleast.There’snostricttimescalebutwe’reverykeenforittohappenassoonaspossible’Jeansays.InthemeantimethegroupcontinuestousethevillagehallinColwallandisgratefulfortheversatilepremisesthatallowsthemtoprovidesomanylivelyactivities.Thereare26childrenonthebooksatthemoment,andstillsomespacesfortheautumnterm.IfparentswouldliketofindoutmoretheycancallJeanHolleyon(01684)540061.

ScoutingintheMalvernshasbeengoingstrongformanyyears,ImyselfstartedinScoutinginColwallasaWolfCubbackin1967andthenwentontoScouts.AfterabriefspellintheforcesIwentbacktotheGroupandbecameaLeaderoftheoldersectionwhichwasthenVentureScouts.Withthebigchangethathappenedin2002withScoutingIfoundmyselfasDistrictExplorerScoutCommissionerfortheMalvernsDistrict.TheExplorerScoutUnitinColwall,calledTiggerESU,hasnowbeenoperatingfornearlytwoyears.Sinceitsformationwehavebeenonmanychallengingactivitiesincludinganumberofcamping

aroundWestMalvern,andvieworbuytheartondisplay.

Tellusabouttheideabehindthefestival.TheideawasconceivedinFranceandisbasedonanArtsFestivalruninasmallandancientvillageinSouthernNormandycalledSaint-Cénerie-le-Gérie.OurFestivalwillfeaturetheworkofupto50artists.AsmallFestivalCommittee,madeupofeightpeople,hasbeenestablishedtohelpensureit’ssuccess.

Andwherewilltheartbeondisplay?TheFestivalwillfollowsomeaspectsofthefrenchmodelbyusinggarages,gazebosandlivingroomsinwhichtodisplaythework,butwe’llalsobenefitthankstotheuseoftheBrewer’sArmspub,StJames’CofEPrimarySchool,StJames’ChurchandtheElimCollege.We’rehopingtheartistswillbecloselygroupedtogetherbetweentheBrewer’sArmsandtheCollege,adistanceofabout200yards.

Isthisagoodplacetodisplayart?WestMalvernisdelightfullysituatedonthewesternslopesofthehillsandislikelytolenditselfwelltothisfestival.There’sneverbeenaneventlikethisheretoourknowledge,butourareadoesattractawiderangeofartistsandthosethatappreciateart.Thereismuch

Who’sinvolved?Alargeproportionofthevillageisinvolvedeitherasvolunteersandhelpers,venuehostsorasvisitorstothefestival,andwehopeitwillbecomeanannualeventwithgrowinginterestandsupport.Childrenwill

alsobeinvolvedinthefestival,includingtheopportunitytoproducetheirownartundersupervisionatthevillageschool.

WhatkindofArtcanweexpect?Allkindsofvisualarts,themajoritywillbepainters,we’vegota

littlebitofsculpture,photography,jewellery,someweavingandsomecalligraphy.

Wheredoesanyprofitfromsalesofartgo?Theartistsarefreetoexhibitandthere’snoadmissionchargeforthepublic.Whereitemsaresold,wehopetheartistwillmakeacontributionof15percenttotheMalvernHillsFoundation.Thisisaregisteredcharity,setupin2005,whichwehopecanbuildupasignificantpotofmoneytobenefitlocalcausesinyearsanddecadestocome.
