DrChrisBaddileyappreciateslivinginMathon.It’snotjustthevillagesociallife,orthecountryside,butitisaboveallelseaboutthedarkness.‘AlthoughIspentmanyhappyyearsinMalvern,Ibecameincreasinglyfrustratedwithlightpollutionandlosingsightofthestarryskies’hesays.SinceastronomyisoneofChris’greatpassions,Mathonhasnostreetlightsanywherenear,withthehillshelpingtoblockoutlightpollutionfromthelargersettlementsoftheSevernValley.WalkingthroughChris’house,IcomeacrossanimpressiveframedphotographoftheSpaceShuttleblastingoffintospace.Itssigned‘Withsincerethanks’byamemberoftheshuttle’screw.It’snotjustastronautswhoappreciateChris;hisworktotryandimproveourviewofthenightskiesisappreciatedbyastronomers,bothamateurandprofessional,worldwide.Chrisbecameinterestedinastronomyasachild.Hegrewupinanacademicenvironment,hisfatherwasaprofessor,specialisinginorganicchemistryatCambridge.Inthe1970sinfraredastronomywastakingoff,andChriscompletedadoctorateatImperialCollegeinLondon,beforemovingintootherastronomicalresearchprojectsinEdinburghandManchester.

HisspecialisedknowledgebroughthimtoworkatR.S.R.E.inMalvernin1979andhe’slivedintheareaeversince.Likemanyastronomers,theglowfromstreetlampsmadelookingatthestarssomethingofachallenge.Inawaythatonlyascientistcan,Chrisbeganthinkingabouttheproblem,eventuallycomingupwithamathematicalprogramtohelplightingdesignersbetterunderstandhowtoreducelightpollution.His‘Skyglow’modelconclusionshavesincebeentakenupbysectionsofthelightingindustryandhaswonhimtheprestigiousGalileoAwardtwoyearsago.

Chrishasthemostamazingcollectionofnightskyphotographsthathe’stakenovermanyyears.Asweporeoverthemanyimagesofcomets,gaseousnebulae,globularstarclusters,galaxiesandplanets,hetellsmeitischallengingbutpossiblewithpractice,thought,andwiththecamerafixedtoagoodtrackingmount.‘Alloftheseimageshavebeentakenwithstandardcameras’hesays,‘althoughthelensqualitydoesneedtobeverygood’.‘Itisquitepossibletoseeallkindsofthingsinthenightskyonaclearnight,evenwiththenakedeye.Apairofbinoculars,withamagnificationof10x50mmisperfectlyadequatetorevealthousandsofstars,galaxiesandnebulae’.

Ofsted Inspection – Oct 2010Owners Sharron & Rob Chapman, together with Manager Victoria and the team, are delighted to offer their experience and a warm, friendly environment at their new nursery setting. In this happy atmosphere, parents find their children enjoy learning through play. “We follow the Early Years Foundation Curriculum,” Sharron explains as she describes the different areas in the large, open plan pre-school room. “We have a cosy book corner, home corner, a role play area that changes with our theme, maths, science, IT and mark making areas together with a wet and messy play area. The children also enjoy organised activities such as baking, music and movement, and art and crafts. The older children benefit from letters and sounds, jolly phonics and number activities, early writing opportunities and circle time.” The nursery has a separate upstairs room for

under-2s, with a sleeping area and milk kitchen – and lots of space to play. A cosy corner gives a quiet

space for story-time, and there is a role play and messy play area. “Also upstairs is a Sensory Room with lights and sounds, a bubble machine and projectors. All the children enjoy this environment, but it is especially useful for children with additional needs,” Sharron continued.“The nursery is very welcoming

and promotes a child-centred approach which enables children to be self-assured, independent and secure... and children are motivated and interested in the broad range of activities provided”

Ofsted Inspection – Oct 2010Parents are provided with a feedback sheet at the end of each session detailing sleep times and what activities have been enjoyed.
