‘ThereusedtobeaWomen’sInstituteGroupinWestMalvernbutthatfinishedafewyearsago.IhadtheideaofsettingupanewgroupafterwatchingadocumentaryaboutawomanontheIsleofWhitedoingasimilarthing.WeheldapreliminarymeetinginDecemberwhenwewereamazedattheenthusiasticresponse!Thankstothatwe’realreadyoneofthelargestgroupsintheareawitharound50members.Ourmemberscoverawiderangeofages,themajorityareagedbetween30&60yearsold.Thebroadrangeofagesisabenefit,differentpeoplebringdifferentoutlooks.Itenrichesallourlives,itwouldbeboringiftheonlypeopleImixedwithwereothermumsfromschool.Differentmemberssuggestingspeakersalsogivesusagreatvarietyofsubjectsanditbroadenstherangeofactivitiesbecausetherearesomanydifferentideas.Itsagoodmixofpeoplefromthevillage,areallynicemix.WhenitcametosettingupthegroupthereweremanymorethingstothinkaboutthanIrealised.FortunatelytheWorcestershireFederationofWIsgaveussomefantastichelpandsupport.Afterweinitiallyapproachedthemweweregivenanadviserwhoexplainedwhatwehadtodo.Therearecertainrulesthateverygroupmuststickto,forexampletheremustbeelevenmeetingsayearandminutesmustbekept.Themeetingsmust
alsobefree,inotherwordsifweorganiseanactivitywecan’tchargeextramoney.Beyondthatwecandomoreorlesswhatwelike,itsveryflexible.Ithinkpartoftheappealisthat

becauseitsanewgroup,ourmembershavethechancetoshapeitintowhattheywant,they’renotjoininganestablishedgroupwithestablishedwaysofdoingthings.WemeetonceamonthinthehallatStJames’PrimarySchool.We’vejusthadacheeseandwinetastingeveningwhichwasgreatfun,we’vealsohadazumbadancingsessionanda‘swishing’evening,wheremembersbroughtalongclothingaccessoriesandswappedthemforothers.OurtalkshaveincludedCaroSweetalocalsculptorandawomanwhohasfosteredatotalofonehundredchildren,whotalkedabouttheimportanceandtherewardsofwhatshe’sdone.Asacommitteewedidworryatfirstthatourprogrammeofmeetingsmightnotappealtoeveryone,butitsbeensurprisingthatactuallyour
membersarewillingtotryallsortsofthings.Nextmonthwe’retryingourhandatjammaking,whicheverybodywantedtotry.Iknowitspartofthe‘Jam&Jerusalem’stereotypeoftheWI,butactuallyIthinkyoungerpeopleareembracingtheolder
valuesoftheWI,we’rereallykeentolearnsometraditionalskillsandcrafts.Aswellastheregularmeetingswe’reestablishingsome‘off-shoot’clubs.There’sabookclubandawalkingclubwhichwillmeetatothertimes,theyremainundertheWIumbrellabutoffermembersthechancetoenjoysomethingelse.Ourmembersarealsojoininginwithothersocialactivitieslocally,afewofushavestartedgoingtothebingoattheWestMalvernSocialClubandwe’relookingatenteringateamintheskittlesleagueattheRoyalBritishLegionClub.They’vebeensowelcomingandwe’rekeentosupportthem.We’rehelpingre-igniteinterestinthoseplacesandwe’remeetingnewpeople,mixingupthecommunityabit.TheWIdoescampaignonanumberofissuesandwe’vebeenvotingonnationalresolutions.

I’veenjoyedbeingPresidentandtheworkhasbeenmanageablesofar.Wehaveagoodcommittee,thereareeightofusandatthefirstmeetingtheFederation’sadvisersbasicallytoldusallthatwehadtotakeonarole.Fortunatelythatmeanstheworkisspreadoutsoitsnottoomuch.We’reallreallyenjoyingit!’

The idea to convert part of the extensive property into a cosy courtyard came from Adrian Ward, who for many years has run Robson Ward, a successful furniture business at the premises on Belle Vue Terrace.

Bluebells,likemanyotherwoodlandplants,flowerbeforethetreescomeintoleaftocatchthespringsunshine.Theyareadaptedtosurvivetherestoftheyearindappledshade.InParkWood,theyhadbeenstartingtodieout,sotheMalvernHillsConservatorshavebeenworkingwithDaveJacksonofWildwoodCoppiceCraftstorestorethishiddentreasure.Historicallythiswoodwasa‘coppicewithstandards’-whereoakandothertreeswerelefttomatureandharvestedinrotationfortimber,whilstthehazelshrubsbeneathwerecutregularlysothatthebrancheswouldre-growforharvestingatvaryingagesandthicknesstoprovidebeanpoles,fuelforthelimekilns,firewood,materialsforhazelhurdlesandotherwoodlandproducts.Thisallowsspringflowerstoflourishinprofusionandmaintainswarmsunnyareaswithinthewoodforbutterfliesandotherwildlife.Withoutthismanagementthetimbertreesgrowtoodenseandstarttoshadeoutthesehazelbushesandwoodlandflowers.Restorationofcoppicetoproductiveuseisadifficultart.InParkWoodthisisbeingdoneonrotationinaseriesofsmallcoupes.Thecoupepatternhas
