Search & RescueYou’ll find them out on the Hills in all weathers, helping people who get into difficulty. The members of ATBRUSAR are a team of volunteers, trained in first aid, who give up their time to respond as soon as an emergency call comes in.

‘Ournamestandsfor‘AllTerrainBikeResponderUnitSearchandRescue’explainsRichardCorrall,theteam’sCommunicationsOfficer.‘Ourgroupbeganin2009anditwassoonapparentthatourserviceisattimescrucial,especiallytowardsthesouthernendofthehills,whereaccessbyvehiclesislimited.We’reproudofwhatwe’veachievedsofar’.AswellasworkingontheMalverns,theteamalsocarriesoutdutiesinWorcester,sometimesrespondingonmountainbike,sometimesonfoot.RichardjoinedlastMayafterreadingabouttheteaminthelocalpress.They’djustbegunmakingregularpatrolsonandaroundthehills,andsincethattime,theirworkhassteadilyincreased.‘Wecompletedsomethinglike105jobslastyear,andthisJanuaryaloneweattended23callouts,11ofwhichwereonthehills’.

Theincidentsrangefromtwistedanklesandminorinjuriestomoreseriousproblemsinvolvingneckandheadtrauma.‘Itmightbepeoplecomingoffbikes,oranawkwardfall,oracrashinvolvingavehicle’saysRichard.‘Themajorityofourcalloutscomethroughtheambulanceservice.Theywillcontactus,dependingonthenatureofthecall.Typically,inanurbanareaanambulanceisexpectedtoarrivewithin8minutes,butontheHillswe’vehadincidentswhereitsbeenhardforanambulancetogetthereasquickly.Sometimes,becauseofweatherconditionsorotherfactors,theAirAmbulancemightnotbeabletolandandsooneofthethingswecandoisprovideafirstresponsewhichwillfacilitateacasualty’sevacuationinatimelymanner’.Membersofthegroupundergocontinuoustraining.‘Therearetwomainelements’explainsRichard,‘aswellasmedicaltrainingweholdfurtherin-housesessionscoveringlocalenvironmentalconditionsandthekindsofillnessesandinjuriesspecifictotheHills.Wealsoundergotraininginsearchandrescueskillsandcommunicationstomakesureweofferthebestpossibleservice.Ourteamleader’sbackgroundwasintheArmysohebringsalotofvaluablepractical
