Summertime and the living is easy….or so goes

the song but if you´ve been living in Spain for

the month of August – I bet you lost weight.

Hot? If you weren´t here in the heat of Spain

last month you have no idea – Scorchio! does

not cover it. People were literally melting in the

streets (according to the tabloids) and most

people felt the need to have one extra beer in

the fight against dehydration. A fight that I might

add us British took to with gusto from what I wit-

nessed in the bars of the region last month.

2 litres of water a day they suggest in the health

manuals apparently (have you ever seen a

´Health Manual’ by the way?) and as we know,

beer, wine and spirits are all made

by using

water and

therefore

it stands

to reason

that we

should

drink

more of

them

– and

more

often.

My pal,

The

Sheriff at Real Radio has led from the front from

what I can see – I’ll guarantee you´ll not see

him dehydrated – or able to pronounce it come

to that.

But its September now and the cool evenings

are almost here. Having spent a good few days

riding around the country on trains and buses for

a travel article I’m glad that this month (depend-

ing on where they send me of course) I should

be able to share a train ride with someone less,

shall we say, aromatic?

In this month´s magazine we´ve had a look at

the success stories of expats and featured 10

who are doing very nicely thank you. Obviously

we couldn´t include everyone (and we haven´t

chosen only advertisers by the way) but if you

feel your business should be mentioned next

month – why not get in touch? We won´t pres-

sure you (or even ask) for an advert – we just

want to report on the good news stories that are

plentiful out there!

Footnote:

Spain may well be in recession and struggling

but there are many good businesses out there

working hard to make a go of it – so let’s try and

support them and not promote Spain as not a

good place to be – we know different and if we

are going to struggle through a recession – well I

know where I’d rather be doing it- BIENVENIDO

A ESPAÑA!

THINK YOU´VE

GOT TASTE IN

MUSIC?

So me and my mate Paul Payne can´t agree on what is good music and what isn´t. Clearly he´s wrong but we´ve decided to air our differing views (literally) and will be broadcasting our own radio show starting this month – once a week on Real Radio 95.6fm (or online at www.realll.webs.com) and playing music from the past four decades (three classic years each show) . We´ll also be offering up our own choices from each year – and just as importantly explaining why. And that’s where you come in…How many times have you thought ´turn that racket off!´ while someone is enjoying what, to you, is audio torture? Or perhaps you think you have good taste in music from a certain era?– get in touch with us on the show – and we might agree or even disagree! But we´ll have some fun doing it. Join us on Facebook and interact with the show – NOW THAT´S WHAT HE CALLS MUSIC!

DRINK (a lot) & SURVIVE THE HEAT!

veryone who has been a property owner here in

Spain for a while will prob-ably not have much use for this article. Most, I am sure however, will remem-ber their own uncertainties and preoccupied moments when trying to budget just how much this little dream they’ve made come true willcost them on an annual ba-sis.

To make things a little more transpar-ent I have decided to give new and prospective property owners in Spain a brief guide regarding theannual fixed bills.

First of all for the prospectives, when buying a property you pay an approxi-mate 10% on top of the sales price in legal fees, taxes and registration. Add a further 2% if you are buying with a mortgage. Once your deed is signed the bills listed below will be at your expense:

(Please understand that I cannot give you any figures since those differ enormously depending on size, loca-tion and value of the property).- Insurance of building and con-tents – compulsory if mortgaged, oth-erwise optional

- Community fees – only if your prop-erty is part of an urbanisation, the fees are chargedby the Administration of the Commu-nity- Rubbish collection (basura) – veryreasonable compared to other EEU countries and is collected daily- Sewage (alcantarillado) – same asabove apart from the daily collections - Water (Aquagest) – charged every 3 months – they cut off after 2 unpaid bills- Electricity (Iberdrola) - every 1 or 2 months depending on area and when contract was made – they cut off when 1 bill is not paid- Local rates (SUMA) – in most mu-nicipalities charged on 1st September of each year for the year in course, very reasonable compared to the UK - Non-residents’ income tax – pay-able at any day during the tax year between 1st Jan and 31st Dec. The declarations will be done and pre-sented by your fiscal representative upon your orders, the tax office will not send any notification.- Residents’ income tax – the income tax declarations for residents are filed in May and June for the previous tax year. Again, the tax office will not no-tify you. You provide your fiscal repre-sentative with all the data and he will prepare and present the tax declara-tion.

MOVE ASIDE OLYMPICS, THE PREMIERSHIP IS BACK AGAIN.

The start of the Premier League brought some fascinating results and

close-fought contests. The newly promoted sides were impressive, de-

spite two defeats (as of 23rd August). Southampton almost toppled

the Premiership champions Man City, where City fought back from 1-2

down to win 3-2. Reading nearly upset the odds too, but dodgy deci-

sions and goalkeeping blunders meant that Chelsea ran out 4-2 win-

ners in their midweek game to propel them to the top of the league.

The Blues won 2-0 against Wigan on Sunday too. West Ham also im-

pressed as they won 1-0 and have 3 points already.

Looking to the league contenders, Man Utd began with an awful dis-

play against an Everton side containing the brilliant Fellaini. He scored

and was stunning against one of the teams tipped to win the title. Rob-

in Van Persie, United’s 24million pound signing, couldn’t aid United as

they lost 1-0. Having discussed Man City and Chelsea, Arsenal started

life without striker Van Persie and Alex Song, who left for Barcelona. It

was not a bad performance, summer signing Santi Cazorla impressing,

but Sunderland managed to keep them out in a 0-0 draw.

Newcastle beat Spurs in an enthralling contest as they continued their

form from the previous year. Demba Ba returned to his goal scoring

with a lovely goal. Andre Villas-Boas suffered defeat in his first game

as manager for Spurs, as the match ended 2-1.

Talking about enthralling games, take a look at Swansea and Fulham.

Both teams incredibly won 5-0 and summer signing Michu was incredi-

ble for Swansea against big-spending QPR, while Fulham’s Mladen Pet-

ric gave an equally impressive performance. Liverpool, highly tipped

to improve from last season with a new manager, were beaten 3-0 by

a remarkable West Brom, coached by ex-Liverpool assistant manager

Steve Clarke. Three goals conceded was awful for Liverpool, and if the

Baggies finished better it could have been worse.

By the time this is published, a host of games will have been played.

The ones that stick in my mind now are the contests between Chelsea

and Newcastle, where Chelsea will seek revenge for a pair of Cisse

wonder goals last time, and Liverpool and Man City. The latter will

be interesting for multiple reasons. How can Liverpool respond from

their previous loss? Can Man City show champion’s credentials again?

I predict a hard-fought 2-1 victory to the Citizens.

The other interesting story right now is the transfer market. In my

opinion, no matter what Mancini says, Man City does not need another

signing. They’re already good enough. Chelsea needs another striker;

two isn’t enough. Reports about Hulk (the player, not the superhero)

and Cavani have been going on for a while, but will either sign?

Man Utd need a defender, desperately. They cannot continue using

Carrick as a centre back and I don’t think that Ferdinand is good

enough anymore. To the rest of the teams, just hold on to your gems!

Fellaini cannot leave Everton just as Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye

cannot leave Newcastle. Arsenal simply cannot lose anybody else after

failing to keep two vital players.

Good luck in the next fixtures and I’ll be bringing another update in a

month’s time.

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

Spain and are receiving your pension from abroad,

you might not have to pay depending on certain

requirements.

If you have retired to Spain and stay in the country

more than 183 days then you too must declare your

income here and not in the UK. You will also benefit

from the special International Treaty between Spain

and the UK. There are still an awful lot of people liv-

ing in Spain but still declaring their incomes in the UK

which means that could be missing out on saving a

lot of money just because

they don’t realise that they can do their declaration

here and take advantage of the fiscal benefits such

as inheritance tax for residents, or just paying less

taxes, for example.

Why?Obviously the Spanish government needs taxes and,

if you are receiving an income you need to be legal.

Even if you know there will be nothing to pay – you’ll

get yourself in the system (which, trust me on this

one, only make life easier) so when the day comes

that someone (we’ll call him ‘Johnny Foreigner’)

dies in Spain Johnny’s family will have a simple task

dealing with the fiscal (the Will etc.) matters than

someone who has never gone into the system.

ExceptionsTo keep it simple (remember it’s me writing this… )

here are some exceptions to the rule of ‘Having to

declare’ but remember also what I said earlier about

there being no harm (only benefits) in getting into the

system.

If you earn less than 22,000€ annually (from one em-

ployer and are already having tax deducted) or (if you

have incomes from several place) that none of those

exceed 1,500€ annually.

If you have received profits from shares or dividends

of less than 1,600€ per year (this even applies if you

have, for example, sold a car for a profit privately).

Salaries or incomes below 11,200€ (usually pen-

sioners) are exempt but remember also that if you

are employed your employer is obliged to deduct a

minimum of 15% from your wage packet to withhold

for the taxman here in Spain. If that does not happen,

because your pension comes from the UK and is

over 11.200 euros (and it has not been tax-deducted

in Spain) - even though you only have one pension,

you must to declare your income in Spain.

Compensation from a road traffic accident is also

exempt from the tax office but again – it’s worth

declaring it anyway.

Anyone receiving unemployment benefit (up to

15,000€ - who’s getting that much..?!) is also free

from deductions.

How?To make sure you don’t need to pay tax on your

income, or indeed reduce your bill at the end of the fi-

nancial year, it’s highly recommended that you speak

to someone who is experienced in the Spanish tax

system – or you could end up paying more than you

need to!

Pedro told me that there are often an array of options

for people to reduce their tax bill (or even pay nothing

at all) if their case is looked at professionally and

with an experienced eye. For example, someone who

has their parents living in the same house can have

certain funds deducted from their end of year tax bill

as can anyone who has perhaps had to adapt their

house for disabled access.

As ever, with any tax office, things are a little more

complicated than we’d like but by dealing with

someone in the know it often works out far simpler

(and less expensive) to have someone who knows

what they are doing look after those (very) important

fiscal matters that can often become an expensive

nightmare in the wrong hands – ours.

From my own experience, the fee charged to make

my declaration was less than Pedro managed to

reduce my tax bill after showing me exactly what I

could and couldn’t claim and therefore the cost of

doing it properly has cost me nothing… in fact I’ve

made a little on the deal, now… do I declare that… ?

If you have any questions or queries about the

upcoming ‘Renta’ and whether indeed you should be

declaring your income – call either Pedro or Ignacio

and they’ll put you straight. And the benefit for All

Abroad readers is that they’ll give you first consulta-

tion free – so what have you got to lose apart from a

headache from those piles of paper!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE IN SPAINWe all want an easy (ish)

life here in Spain but not

always that easy is it?

Especially when it comes

to the man with the rubber

stamp. And let’s face it,

the tremendous amount of

paperwork currently run-

ning through the Spanish

bureaucracy system not

only brings (several) South

American countries’ rain

forests down, but assur-

edly their unemployment

numbers too. But that’s the

system we have to work

with but with some expert

help you can make sure

that you’re not one of the

ones rushing to the bank

on the 20th of June to pay a

tax bill at the last minute, or

worse still a fine.

With the annual tax dec-

laration (Renta) deadline

coming soon, on 30th June,

anyone with an income

should be getting their

declaration in order (if

you really want that ‘easy’

life) so we asked Alicante

lawyers, Ignacio and Pedro

to once again step in and

explain just what the ‘Renta’

is and who should be get-

ting the pens out to fill in a

form or two.

Who?

Everyone who has an

income while living here in

Spain needs to make a dec-

laration whether it is from

a salary or from a pension

in another country. Now

before you start worrying,

About Pedro & IgnacioThe two spent a year at South-ampton Institute of interna-tional law so it’s no surprise that they speak English so well. Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly success-ful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

The taxman cometh…Dave Bull

discovers the easy way to live

a trouble-free (as far as the Tax man is

concerned) life in Spain.

In order to assist you

in complying with the

Traffic Department’s

Regulations in Spain,

there are a couple

of important points I

would like to draw your

attention to.

Firstly, if you have a

foreign registered vehi-

cle in Spain, which you

keep here on a perma-

nent basis, you should,

after no longer than

two months, re-register

the vehicle onto Span-

ish number plates. In

order to do this, you

will need an engineer’s

report followed by a

technical inspection

of the vehicle at an

ITV station. Usually,

with English registered

vehicles, this involves

replacing or adjusting

the headlights and fog

light/s to meet the Eu-

ropean regulations, and

can be done at your

local garage.

Keeping it brief...

Their doors are always open – even if you´re not sure if you really need a lawyer – so pop along and see them in Avda de Naciones, Ciudad Quesada – or one of their other local offices.

Once the vehicle has passed the technical in-

spection, one can then proceed with the paper-

work involved in the re-registration. Important

factors to remember here are that lower C02

emissions mean less import duty, and that if you

are changing your place of residence, you are

exempt from import duty altogether, providing

you are within the established time limits.

The re-registering of your car need not be an

expensive nor complicated process, although

it does seem mind-boggling when you are

presented with an endless list of requisites,

half of which you have no idea how to go about

organizing. You may be well advised to put the

job in the hands of a professional, who can get

it done for you in a just a few days without any

fuss and bother.

The second important point, which you need to

be well informed about, is your Driver’s Licence.

One hears many conflicting reports about what

one should and should not do, however it is re-

ally quite simple.

If you are a Resident in Spain and your Driver’s

Licence comes up for renewal, you are legally

obliged to exchange it here for a Spanish Driv-

er’s Licence. One should leave plenty of

time, as this process takes approximately

four months from the day of presentation

in the Traffic Department. It is necessary

to pass a medical test beforehand at a spe-

cific medical centre, and there are various

documents required. Should one’s Driver’s

Licence not need renewing in the near

future, then it is sufficient to have this Licence

registered at the Traffic Department, where

one will then be periodically informed of when

one needs to go for a medical test. Driver’s

Licences which are no longer valid in the driver’s

country of origin, for example the old cardboard

type, are also not valid in Spain, and need to be

exchanged for the plastic type. The insurance

company should be informed of the up-to-date

status of their client’s Driver’s Licence, to avoid

possible problems in case of a claim.

The paperwork involved in the exchanging or

registering of your Driver’s Licence can be rather

overwhelming, not to mention the endless

queues in the Traffic Departments in Alicante

and Murcia. Again, you may be well advised

to let a professional take care of everything for

you, so that you can use your time for the things

you came to Spain to enjoy!

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

Spain and are receiving your pension from abroad,

you might not have to pay depending on certain

requirements.

If you have retired to Spain and stay in the country

more than 183 days then you too must declare your

income here and not in the UK. You will also benefit

from the special International Treaty between Spain

and the UK. There are still an awful lot of people liv-

ing in Spain but still declaring their incomes in the UK

which means that could be missing out on saving a

lot of money just because

they don’t realise that they can do their declaration

here and take advantage of the fiscal benefits such

as inheritance tax for residents, or just paying less

taxes, for example.

Why?Obviously the Spanish government needs taxes and,

if you are receiving an income you need to be legal.

Even if you know there will be nothing to pay – you’ll

get yourself in the system (which, trust me on this

one, only make life easier) so when the day comes

that someone (we’ll call him ‘Johnny Foreigner’)

dies in Spain Johnny’s family will have a simple task

dealing with the fiscal (the Will etc.) matters than

someone who has never gone into the system.

ExceptionsTo keep it simple (remember it’s me writing this… )

here are some exceptions to the rule of ‘Having to

declare’ but remember also what I said earlier about

there being no harm (only benefits) in getting into the

system.

If you earn less than 22,000€ annually (from one em-

ployer and are already having tax deducted) or (if you

have incomes from several place) that none of those

exceed 1,500€ annually.

If you have received profits from shares or dividends

of less than 1,600€ per year (this even applies if you

have, for example, sold a car for a profit privately).

Salaries or incomes below 11,200€ (usually pen-

sioners) are exempt but remember also that if you

are employed your employer is obliged to deduct a

minimum of 15% from your wage packet to withhold

for the taxman here in Spain. If that does not happen,

because your pension comes from the UK and is

over 11.200 euros (and it has not been tax-deducted

in Spain) - even though you only have one pension,

you must to declare your income in Spain.

Compensation from a road traffic accident is also

exempt from the tax office but again – it’s worth

declaring it anyway.

Anyone receiving unemployment benefit (up to

15,000€ - who’s getting that much..?!) is also free

from deductions.

How?To make sure you don’t need to pay tax on your

income, or indeed reduce your bill at the end of the fi-

nancial year, it’s highly recommended that you speak

to someone who is experienced in the Spanish tax

system – or you could end up paying more than you

need to!

Pedro told me that there are often an array of options

for people to reduce their tax bill (or even pay nothing

at all) if their case is looked at professionally and

with an experienced eye. For example, someone who

has their parents living in the same house can have

certain funds deducted from their end of year tax bill

as can anyone who has perhaps had to adapt their

house for disabled access.

As ever, with any tax office, things are a little more

complicated than we’d like but by dealing with

someone in the know it often works out far simpler

(and less expensive) to have someone who knows

what they are doing look after those (very) important

fiscal matters that can often become an expensive

nightmare in the wrong hands – ours.

From my own experience, the fee charged to make

my declaration was less than Pedro managed to

reduce my tax bill after showing me exactly what I

could and couldn’t claim and therefore the cost of

doing it properly has cost me nothing… in fact I’ve

made a little on the deal, now… do I declare that… ?

If you have any questions or queries about the

upcoming ‘Renta’ and whether indeed you should be

declaring your income – call either Pedro or Ignacio

and they’ll put you straight. And the benefit for All

Abroad readers is that they’ll give you first consulta-

tion free – so what have you got to lose apart from a

headache from those piles of paper!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE IN SPAINWe all want an easy (ish)

life here in Spain but not

always that easy is it?

Especially when it comes

to the man with the rubber

stamp. And let’s face it,

the tremendous amount of

paperwork currently run-

ning through the Spanish

bureaucracy system not

only brings (several) South

American countries’ rain

forests down, but assur-

edly their unemployment

numbers too. But that’s the

system we have to work

with but with some expert

help you can make sure

that you’re not one of the

ones rushing to the bank

on the 20th of June to pay a

tax bill at the last minute, or

worse still a fine.

With the annual tax dec-

laration (Renta) deadline

coming soon, on 30th June,

anyone with an income

should be getting their

declaration in order (if

you really want that ‘easy’

life) so we asked Alicante

lawyers, Ignacio and Pedro

to once again step in and

explain just what the ‘Renta’

is and who should be get-

ting the pens out to fill in a

form or two.

Who?

Everyone who has an

income while living here in

Spain needs to make a dec-

laration whether it is from

a salary or from a pension

in another country. Now

before you start worrying,

About Pedro & IgnacioThe two spent a year at South-ampton Institute of interna-tional law so it’s no surprise that they speak English so well. Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly success-ful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

The taxman cometh…Dave Bull

discovers the easy way to live

a trouble-free (as far as the Tax man is

concerned) life in Spain.

In order to assist you

in complying with the

Traffic Department’s

Regulations in Spain,

there are a couple

of important points I

would like to draw your

attention to.

Firstly, if you have a

foreign registered vehi-

cle in Spain, which you

keep here on a perma-

nent basis, you should,

after no longer than

two months, re-register

the vehicle onto Span-

ish number plates. In

order to do this, you

will need an engineer’s

report followed by a

technical inspection

of the vehicle at an

ITV station. Usually,

with English registered

vehicles, this involves

replacing or adjusting

the headlights and fog

light/s to meet the Eu-

ropean regulations, and

can be done at your

local garage.

Their doors are always open – even if you´re not sure if you really need a lawyer – so pop along and see them in Avda de Naciones, Ciudad Quesada – or one of their other local offices.

Once the vehicle has passed the technical in-

spection, one can then proceed with the paper-

work involved in the re-registration. Important

factors to remember here are that lower C02

emissions mean less import duty, and that if you

are changing your place of residence, you are

exempt from import duty altogether, providing

you are within the established time limits.

The re-registering of your car need not be an

expensive nor complicated process, although

it does seem mind-boggling when you are

presented with an endless list of requisites,

half of which you have no idea how to go about

organizing. You may be well advised to put the

job in the hands of a professional, who can get

it done for you in a just a few days without any

fuss and bother.

The second important point, which you need to

be well informed about, is your Driver’s Licence.

One hears many conflicting reports about what

one should and should not do, however it is re-

ally quite simple.

If you are a Resident in Spain and your Driver’s

Licence comes up for renewal, you are legally

obliged to exchange it here for a Spanish Driv-

er’s Licence. One should leave plenty of

time, as this process takes approximately

four months from the day of presentation

in the Traffic Department. It is necessary

to pass a medical test beforehand at a spe-

cific medical centre, and there are various

documents required. Should one’s Driver’s

Licence not need renewing in the near

future, then it is sufficient to have this Licence

registered at the Traffic Department, where

one will then be periodically informed of when

one needs to go for a medical test. Driver’s

Licences which are no longer valid in the driver’s

country of origin, for example the old cardboard

type, are also not valid in Spain, and need to be

exchanged for the plastic type. The insurance

company should be informed of the up-to-date

status of their client’s Driver’s Licence, to avoid

possible problems in case of a claim.

The paperwork involved in the exchanging or

registering of your Driver’s Licence can be rather

overwhelming, not to mention the endless

queues in the Traffic Departments in Alicante

and Murcia. Again, you may be well advised

to let a professional take care of everything for

you, so that you can use your time for the things

you came to Spain to enjoy!

Globelink Travel Insurance are issuing a timely reminder to every-one to be on their guard whilst travelling anywhere in the world. Tourists are particularly vulnerable because they are in unfamiliar surroundings and are often victims of various scams and distraction theft by pickpockets, and other thieves.

Be aware that these pondlife creatures are everywhere, airports, bus and railway stations, tourist attractions etc., just waiting for the opportunity to steal your Money, Credit Cards, Mobile phones and Passports. They often work in groups of 3 or 4 using all types of tricks to distract their unsuspecting victim and they have no concern whatsoever about your feelings or the disruption they will cause to your plans. Be very wary of people asking for directions or trying to sell you something in the street. Be careful about who is watching when you get your purse or wallet out to pay for some-thing in a restaurant, shop or market.

Do not ever under any circumstance leave your bag unattended and be particularly careful where you place your valuables whilst relaxing in a café or bar. Some of the tricks used to distract people might be an attractive male or female passing by, a faked argu-ment, somebody dropping something, another diner engaging you in friendly conversation. Remember, it only takes one second for

these organised teams to walk away with your bag, but it could take you many weeks to replace the items and might even prevent you from travelling.

Be extremely careful when driving you car in another country, or using a hired vehicle. We have received quite a number of claims from people who have been robbed by organised gangs. The usual ploy is a car or motorcycle pulls alongside and a passenger indi-cates that you have a puncture or some other problem with your vehicle and when you stop, they appear friendly and offer to assist you. There is often a second vehicle who’s occupants drive off with your bags whilst you are distracted by the problem with your car. Be vigilant when you stop at service areas and try to never leave your vehicle unattended at any time during a journey. If someone indicates that there is something wrong with your car, you should not stop, but drive on carefully until you reach a busy well lit area.

ABOUT GROWING OLDER... First ~Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. Second ~ The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for. Third ~ Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know ‘why’ I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren’t paved. Fourth ~ When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra. Fifth ~ You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks. Sixth ~ I don’t know how I got over the hill without getting to the top. Seventh ~ One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it’s such a nice change from being young. Eighth ~ One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been. Ninth ~ Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Tenth ~ Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf. And, finally ~ If you don’t learn to laugh at trouble, you won’t have anything to laugh at when you’re old.

Two 90 year old men, Mike and Joe, have been

friends all of their lives.

When it’s clear that Joe is dying, Mike visits him every day. One day Mike says, “Joe, we both loved rugby all our lives, and we played rugby on Saturdays together for so many years. Please do me one favour, when you get to Heaven, somehow you must let me know if there’s rugby

there.”Joe looks up at Mike from

his death bed,” Mike, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favour for you.Shortly after that, Joe

passes on.At midnight a couple of nights later, Mike is awakened from

a sound sleep by a blind-ing flash of white light and a voice calling out to him, “Mike--

Mike.”“Who is it? asks Mike sitting

up suddenly. “Who is it?”“Mike--it’s me, Joe.”

“You’re not Joe. Joe just died.”

“I’m telling you, it’s me, Joe,” insists the voice.”

“Joe! Where are you?”“In heaven”, replies Joe. “I have some really good news

and a little bad news.”“Tell me the good news first,”

says Mike.“The good news,” Joe says,”

is that there’s rugby in heaven. Better yet, all of our old friends who died before

us are here, too. Better than that, we’re all young again.

Better still, it’s always spring time and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play rugby all we want, and we never get tired.”

That’s fantastic,” says Mike. “It’s beyond my wildest

dreams! So what’s the bad news?

“You’re in the team for this Saturday.”

10 expat businesses that are GOING FOR IT in Spain!

1) The Card Place – Benijofar & Punta Prima: Rob and Lisa Gibbs have been in Spain for ten years now and many expats will either know them or have used one of their shops that sell every-thing from newspapers to greeting cards to souvenirs – and they do it well. Having chosen their staff carefully they have instilled a community feel to both places and by doing so many expats and Spanish frequent the premises (sometimes just for a chat!) often daily.

2) I.P.G. – La Marina: I´ve worked on and off with Alan and Anne many times over the years and have always been impressed by their work ethic and attention to their customers. Many are the times I’ve had to wait my turn to meet with them as they´ve answered (patiently) potential client’s questions. They´ve not only kept going through the quieter times but have evolved and now are prospering as one of the first sought out estate agents by potential buyers in the region.

3) New2you – Mar Azul & El Zoco: I wrote about Karen Dowsing (owner and founder of New2you second hand furniture shops) some time ago and the story is still pretty much the same, New2you is still doing well in the current climate and Karen, as ever, is looking to grow her business even more. By always selling quality products she has established a good reputation along the coast, and inland too!

4) Performance & Diesel – Guardamar & Santa Pola: The lads at P & D (and of course the lovely Judith) have been going a good few years now and as with any well-run business that goes that bit further for its customers (and me, often…) they have ´bucked the trend´ and grown in the last few years from one very busy workshop on the Poligono at Guardamar to a second unit on the Santa Pola industrial estate with a Mercedes qualified me-chanic looking after customers cars there.

I don´t know if you read one of the UK tabloids last month as you were cleaning out the budgie but…there seems to be a (desperate) search by the British media to highlight those expats who are struggling out here – but only those. When I’ve replied to their emails and tweets asking why they don´t feature those expats out here who have made a go of it, despite the economic climate the response is always the same – none…So, as a thanks (and a pat on the back) to those businesses that are doing well out here we´ve decided to take the bull by the horns and feature just a few of the many that have made a commercial success of their time here.

10 expat businesses that are GOING FOR IT in Spain!

5) The Coastrider: The Coastrider newspaper have grown year

on year proving that if you deliver the goods to your customers

– in this case readers and advertisers – you´ll reap the rewards

and having now established itself as arguably the favourite weekly

read among expats they are now looking to build on their status

in the marketplace.

6) La Marina Furniture – La Marina Village: Alan and the

team have been looking after expats furniture and office needs

since taking over the business several years ago when it was just

´ticking over.´ Nowadays you´ll see the La Marina Furniture vans

all along the Costa Blanca as they deliver (and collect) yet more

furniture. Since the recession Alan has looked at the business and

reshaped where he´s needed to in an effort to reach the market

and that effort has been proved worthwhile as La Marina Furniture

continues to grow in spite of a tough economic

climate.

7) Real Radio:Real Radio popped up about a year or so ago and

from then on it has grown, attracting listeners with some great

retro music and of course some decent banter. But a radio station

doesn´t survive on that and the Real Radio team have worked

hard to build the station in a short space of time to one of the

most popular in the area. Relying on other businesses to buy ad-

vertising in tough times is never easy (I know!) but RR have again

´bucked the trend´and not only started but continued to grow a

business in its first year.

8) Linen Mills – Gran Alacant – Quesada:

This is another business that can be seen to be growing year on

year with more shops being added. The team at Linen Mills rely

on supplying decent quality products at a decent price, and of

course with good service.it sounds like a testimonial but it´s not

– it´s basic business sense. Give the customer what they want,

at a price they can afford – and always do it with a smile – works

for all businesses and as Linen Mills are showing, it makes perfect

business sense!

9) Plaza Mayor – Gran Alacant: If you´ve been reading this

magazine recently you´ll know about this group of busi-

nesses who have knuckled down to work together and

bring in the customers to this pleasant square in Gran

Alacant. And it´s working! The square is full at week-

ends these days and from what was once a quiet square

that not many would bother visiting – they have now

´put bums on seats´ as the saying goes!

9) Bar Central – Hondon de las Nieves: I´ve

known owner, Yvonne, only a short time but it always

a pleasure to visit her bar. Yes of course it’s got beer

(and food) but when you can visit a place and come

away smiling it always is heartening. Apart from

doing some of the best home-cooked grub around

(just take a visit and see how many agree with me)

a (genuinely) warm welcome is always given and

along with real value for money food and drink it’s

no wonder Bar Central is flourishing in the ´crisis.´

So there you have it 10 (of many) businesses not just doing ok, but being successful, and there are many more out there too. After last months warnings on beach sports, the problems just keep coming this month. Sunscreen has come under the influence of a cynical Neptune and may be at least a factor 1 less than that advertised on the bottle.

Getting angry will not make any difference on the 23rd when you are set to confront on the phone a customer services agent who can’t really speak English - beware of speaking sentences off her list because it doesn’t really matter how much you yell she wont understand.

A phone call will answer a question you have pondered upon since the 16th of last month. The answer may be a disappointment unless you understand complex math-ematical formulas explained to you over the phone.

Explaining things without using your hands is a test you might like to practice for some reason or other. What have the planets got in store for you? Handcuffs look highly starred.

Climbing trees is well starred, especially the low ones and especially when a lion isn’t trying to eat you from below, otherwise they are badly starred with a falling from great heights advisory throughout.

Sweeping, glamorous, deep blue sea, palm trees swaying in a light breeze with not a cloud in the sky scenes will either induce feelings of ‘gotta get away from this office job’, or send you to sleep this month, depending on which anxiety dvd course the planets have got you on.

Neptune has been impressed by the yellow and red cards the referees in the Premier League have been using and particularly the power these seem to wield on those who have been naughty. Beware yellow and red in all of their forms until we can work this one out.

Drunk speed dating is positively starred as long as you check out the talent before the drinking starts and not during or after.

After last months excursions into the joys of text messaging, now might be the time to try to stop writing u for you, 2 for to or too, and ROTFLMFAO for rolling on the floor laughing my ass off [edited for family newspaper], or, on second thoughts, maybe don’t for the last one just rolls of the tongue doesn’t it?

A hearty walk, a hearty meal but not Braveheart are well starred, unless you are in the mood for painting the Scottish flag on your face and donning a kilt, or a skirt if you get the wrong kind of fabric again.

Blaming others for your misfortune is well starred this month, especially in any career or motoring decisions offered you by elders in the past.

Jupiter and Saturn are both set to waft a celestial criticism your way during attempts at rapping - that bit when you just can’t think of the next sentence? That’s the influence of Saturn that is... (Jupiter is just happy when you work the word boobies in somewhere).

SEPTEMBER 2012‘Uuuummmmm...’

The red-bearded mechanic at Performance & Diesel

The worst job I have had ever had (cue Derek and Clive aka Peter Cook & Dudley Moore) as a mechanic happened 2½ years ago in December when a Spanish customer brought his VW diesel van to me on a grua.

In my best Spanish we conversed

and I found out that his van had been

gradually getting more and more dif-

ficult to start until this day it would

not start at all. “OK I said, I will check

it out; it will most probably be the

heater plugs”. He replied “OK what-

ever it needs” and as he walked out

he said in English, “Oh yes, I think

my cat has died”. Now in mechanical

terms it means the Catalytic convert-

er has failed, so I thought no more of

it and off he went.

Later that day we dragged the van

into the garage and lifted the bon-

net. As I put my head to the engine,

I was greeted with the most disgust-

ing pungent smell ever, I even dry

retched twice; luckily I had not eaten

anything that day. On closer inves-

tigation (with a peg on my nose) I

found the cat that belonged to the

owner, had indeed died!! It had

curled up on the under cover of the

engine and then met its maker. By

the time I found it, it was nicely de-

composing. Need I say any more!

P.S. The heater plugs did need re-

placing and his van was starting fine

after that, and we disposed of his cat

in a suitable manner.

But there’s no reason why you can’t

learn as well. It doesn’t have to be as

hard as it can look — if you go about it

the right way.

You can learn how to use a PC how-

ever you like — it’s up to you! But

here are some tips that you might find

helpful.

First of all, don’t try to learn it all in

one go. Intensively going at it to try

to learn in one afternoon just doesn’t

work very well… and it’s not much

fun, either! Instead, spend say 20-30

minutes an evening a couple of times

a week on it. Of course, if you’re hav-

ing fun and want to do more, that’s

fine, but don’t feel you have to.

Every so often, look back at what

you’ve learnt and make sure you can

still remember it. When you first learn

something it’s easy to forget it again

quickly — when you’ve been back to

it a few times it goes into long-term

memory. The other key to making

sure you remember things is to try

everything out. Don’t just read about

something and think “Oh yes, I can do

that” — even if you can, still actually

try it out. That way it’ll be much easier

to remember.

Once you’ve tried a new skill out (for

example putting photos into a text

document), have a think about how

you might use it (making a poster, a

car advert, a story for the grandkids,

a booklet about your holiday…). Then

try doing some of them. Trying out

what you’ve learnt in a “real” situa-

tion helps it to stick in your mind —

plus you actually get something use-

ful out of it. Even if you don’t want to

spend a lot of time doing this, do have

a think about how you might use what

you’ve learnt. It’ll help you under-

stand (and so remember) what you’ve

learnt better.

Check you’ve got the right information

for your country, too. Most things are

the same for all countries but some do

matter. For example, imagine you’re

trying to connect to the Internet for

the first time, and you have informa-

tion about connecting in America,

through a Service Provider based in

the US. That’s fine if you’re in the US

but could be confusing if you’re in

England with its different phone sys-

tem and Internet Service providers.

Similarly if you have websites about

booking train tickets or shopping or

so on, check they’re in the right coun-

try or you might have some odd prob-

lems!

A lot of people are nervous when they

first start learning to use a PC. It’s not

surprising when you’re starting some-

thing new. But don’t let that stop you

experimenting. If you’re not sure how

to do something, try a few different

ways that might work. If you’re not

sure where an option is in a program,

hunt through the menus. And if you’re

not sure what something does, just

try it — though it’s best to save any

important work first! In fact saving

your work often (and backing it up to

floppy disk, zip disk or writable CD) is

a good idea if you have anything im-

portant on your PC. Make sure in en-

able activex to make sure your com-

puter runs safely.

Don’t worry about trying to learn ev-

erything. I don’t think there’s a single

person in the world who could say

they know it all about PCs. Even with-

out buying any extra software, just in

Windows, there is a huge amount you

could learn. Add in extra software you

can buy and the internet and it’s prac-

tically infinite. Just learn the basics,

then pick what you want to be able to

do and learn that.

And most important, while you’re do-

ing it, have fun!

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS

Have you ever heard a piece of music

on the radio, or when you were pass-

ing a bar or a shop, and it’s taken you

right back to another place and time.

This happens to me a lot. For example,

one night many years ago we were sit-

ting in a beach bar in the little town of

Scala on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

We were the only people in the bar, it

was dark, and we were watching the

lights of ships moving slowly along the

horizon. The barman put on this piece

of music, which we weren’t familiar

with, so we asked him who it was by.

He told us it was called 29 Palms and

was from the solo album of Robert

Plant, of Led Zeppelin fame. Now

whenever I listen to that track it takes

me right back to that night.

Another song which always reminds

me of holidays is Losing my Religion

by REM. For a few years we used to

go to a place called Saint George’s

Complex in Lardos, Rhodes. Every

night at the disco we used to ask the

DJ to play this and he always saved it

for the last track of the night. Some-

times we were the only people left on

the dance floor but we didn’t care we

were having fun!

After a few years of going to Lardos

we started to stay in the nearby vil-

lage of Lindos instead. It is a great

place and every night after our meal

we used to go round the various little

bars in the village. Most of the bars

were not very busy but we noticed

that every time we walked past Mano-

lis bar, it was packed and there were

people dancing on the benches and

on the tables which looked like fun!

Eventually we plucked up the courage

to go in there. It was a bit of a crush

but the atmosphere was great and we

met some interesting people there. In

Lindos the music used to stop at mid-

night and at about ten to twelve we

would hear ‘long long time ago, I can

still remember how that music used

to make me smile ….’ .Every night the

DJ would play American Pie by Don

Mclean as the last track of the night.

Absolutely everyone in the bar used to

be on their feet singing every word all

the way through. Great memories!

We have just returned from an enjoy-able visit to Santiago de Compostela. I’m afraid we can’t claim to have walked there along one of the Camino routes, but instead we flew from Alicante to Santiago, which got us there in about an hour and a half. Santiago de Compostela is more than 1000km North West of Ali-cante, in the Galicia region of Spain and is most famous for being the final desti-nation of various pilgrim routes. Appar-ently, it is the third most visited site for a religious pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome. The city is named in honour of Saint James, whose remains were dis-covered after a hermit saw strange stars over the hillside and reported this to the Bishop of the time. The name translates roughly as ‘Saint James’ (Sant iago) and ’field of stars’ (Campus Stellae and later Compostela).

The Cathedral and the Plaza de Obradoiro - The most important attraction for any visitor is the cathedral. The interior is large and incor-porates several side chapels and impressive altar pieces. The museum is also worth a visit and gives access to a balcony, where you get good views of the main square. The famous botafumeiro, a huge oil burner which is some-times swung across the nave, is only used at special services. According to my guide book it began to be used in the 14th century to perfume the air, lessening the odour of sweat from the pilgrims after their long journey! The exterior of the Cathedral is quite spectacular when viewed from the main Plaza de Obra-doiro (Stonemason’s Square). The building has many elaborate carvings which provide evidence of the prosperity of the city resulting from the many pilgrims and visitors it has at-tracted over the years.

The other sides of the square are made up with three more impressive buildings. The Hostal de los Reyes was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs to provide accommodation and a hospital for pilgrims and the building is now a Parador. The Rajoy Palace was built by a former Archbishop and the ninety metre long

front is made up of a large portico of many arches. This building now houses various Government De-partments and the City Coun-cil offices. The College of San Jerome is a less imposing building than the others, it does, however, feature an ornately carved doorway opening onto the square. It was originally built as a school for poor stu-dents and now makes up part of the Santiago University. A walk round the outside of the cathedral takes you to various other squares, including, Plaza de las Platerias, Plaza de la Quintana and Plaza de la Inmaculada where you will also find the Monastery of San Martin Pinario.

City streets, shops, bars and restaurants - When you leave the area of the Cathedral there are many small streets to walk around, and the area is largely free of vehicles. The Rua de Franco and the Rua de Vilar are both worth a visit and the latter contains the tour-ist information office where you can pick up a map from the helpful staff who all speak Eng-lish. These streets contain small tourist shops selling a variety of souvenirs and guide books. There are also café bars and restaurants, in-cluding our personal favourite, Paradiso. We also ate at a café in La Quintana Square where we had a very good menu del dia for just 7 euros. Parks and photo viewpoints - A visit to La Alameda park is recommended if you need a rest as there are plenty of benches where you can sit in the shade and watch the people go by. A walk around the park will take you to various miradors where you can get great views looking towards the Cathedral and the old city. Another viewpoint looks over the Fer-radura Gardens and out into the countryside. Accomodation - We stayed at the small but comfortable Hotel Miradoiro de Belvis where the staff were very helpful, and which is about 10 minutes walk from the Cathedral area and a short 20 euro taxi ride from the airport. Be-hind our hotel there was a lovely park and we had a nice view of the Convent de Belvis from our room. Overall we had a great time and, in just a few days saw all of the main sites. If we visit Santiago again it would be good to hire a car and explore some of the Galician coast and countryside which certainly looks well worth a visit.

1 You have prob a bly seen a num ber of vir tual illu sions that prove the lim its of our per cep tion (and “per fec tion”!), such as the one below, or the one where you are asked to com pare the length of two lines. Easy stuff, right?

Well, why don’t you try this fun Muller-Lyer Illu sion. Which of the 2 cir cles sur-rounded by other cir cles is bigger?

2. The captain of a ship was telling this interesting story: “We traveled the sea far and wide. At one time, two of my sailors were standing on opposite sides of the ship. One was looking west and the other one east. And at the same time, they could see each other clearly.” How can that be possible? 3. 13 people came into a hotel with 12 rooms and each guest wanted his own room. The bellboy solved this problem. He asked the thirteenth guest to wait a little with the first guest in room number 1. So in the first room there were two people. The bellboy took the third guest to room number 2, the fourth to number 3, ..., and the twelfth guest to room num-ber 11. Then he returned to room number 1 and took the thirteenth guest to room number 12, still vacant. How can everybody have his own room?

Finally, the true story as told by Hillary Clinton to world leaders .....

Some years ago President Clinton was hosting a state dinner when, at thelast minute, his regular cook fell ill and they had to get a replacement on short notice.

The fellow arrived and turned out to be a very grubby-looking man named Jon.

The President voiced his concerns to his Chief-of-Staff but was told that this was the best they could do on such short notice.

Just before the meal, the President noticed the cook sticking his finger in the soup to taste it and again complained to the Chief-of-Staff, but he was told that this man was supposed to be a very good chef.

The meal went okay, but the President was sure that the soup tasted a little funny. By the time dessert came, he was starting to have stomach cramps and nausea. It was getting worse and worse until finally the President had to excuse himself from the dinner to look for the bathroom.

Passing through the kitchen, he caught sight of the cook, Jon, scratching his rear end, which made him feel even worse.

By now, the President was desperately ill with violent cramps and was so disorientated that he couldn’t remember which door led to the bathroom.

He was on the verge of passing out from the pain when he finally found a door that opened.

As he unzipped his trousers and ran in, he realized to his hor-ror that he had stumbled into Monica Lewinsky’s office with his trousers around his knees.

As he was just about to pass out, she bent over him and heard the President whisper in a barely audible voice .....

“Sack my cook”

And that is how the whole misunderstanding occurred !!!

Well September is finally upon us so

maybe it will start to cool down a bit

now and we might be able to get out

and about to go and see some great

acts appearing all over the Costa’s

without sitting in a

pool of water lol... so

this month there is

still a lot happening

as you can see from

the gig guide and also

this month there are

2 great shows to go

and see. The first is

on the 12th where I’ve

agreed to help the guys

by putting on a charity

show for the homeless

and needy of San Ful-

gencio and La Marina. It

will be held at the Hogs

Head in La Marina starting at 8pm and

its going to be a great night full of top

class entertainment with raffles and

fun & games, with top names like JJ

Soulman, Lorna Michelle, Tony Lincoln,

Dave E Moss and not forgetting funny

man Lynden B. This night is going to be

fantastic and its open to everyone as

its free entrance so no tickets needed

so hopefully I will see you all down

there on the 12th

for that event. The next big event is

going to be held at La Campana in El

Eden nr Guardamar on the afternoon

of the 15th at 12pm to 6.30pm with

raffles, charity auction,

side stalls, yard of ale

competition, Zumba

with Lisa and Dance

Extreme will be there

along with 6 top acts

performing and this

is all to raise money

for Emaus Children’s

Home in Elche, so

where ever you will be

this month go and see

some great artists out

here and have a bril-

liant night and I will

be back again next month.

If you’re a bar or an entertainer and

want to appear in the gig guide or you

have any events coming up that you

would like me to tell everyone about

Each month sees more dogs in need & funds being stretched even further. Thank you to Chris, Peter & girls from The Mini Market & Scissor Sister Hairdressers, Las Kalendas, Fortuna who along with Karen and Jim of the The Albero Restaurant raised 1156 euros for us. A great evening, we hope to have another event there in October. On 15th September The Castle Bar, Fortuna is holding a Hog Roast to raise funds for the dogs. Tickets 10 euros .
