ALL HALLOWS’ TIDINGS VOL. 20, NO. 6 June 2013 The Rector’s Letter M y Dear People of God, O LORD our Governor, how exalted is your Name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. (Psalm 8:1-2) The Psalmist in ancient Israel understood the importance of children in our worship of God. Like the voices of the angels, the innocent words out of the mouths of infants and children ascend to the heavens above. As a priest, I recall how fulfilling it was when I led the worship services for the children of the St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Day School during my time at that parish from 2005 to 2008. Even Jesus himself has taught us saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Matthew 10:14b-15 At All Hallows', those who have attended the monthly Family Mass in the undercroft of the Parish House have attested to how enriching that experi- ence has been, both for the children and the adults. At our May Vestry Meeting, I led a discussion concerning the future of the Family Mass, knowing that Mthr. Olsen would be leaving us soon and we would no longer be able to have a concurrent 10:30 am Rite II Holy Eucharist and the Family Mass. The Vestry was unanimous in supporting the continu- ation of the Family Mass in the context of the 10:30 am service at the Brick Church once a month. At the same time, from the meeting I had with the Sunday School teachers, our common understanding is that the new Family Mass combined with the regular service will take on a new form—a liturgy that is fulfilling for children and adults. In other words, it will be a truly family- oriented service, in which, there is a place for everyone at the Table. Both children and adults will read the lessons. The homilies preached by the rector will cater to both children and adults. And, of course, at the Lord’s Table, both children and adults will partake of the Body and Blood of our Savior side by side. The Canons of the Episcopal Church state that the rector is in charge of the worship for a parish. That said, I believe our worship is a parish-wide ministry. We each have a part to play in it. I, as Rector, have the canonical authority and profes- sional expertise in designing and carrying out the worship that is liturgically and pastorally appropri- ate. Our Director of Music, Michael Menne, has the musical expertise needed for our worship. Our Altar Guild, Choir, acolytes, greeter/ushers, and lectors are all indispensable and vital parts of our worship life. And our parishioners are always encouraged to give me feedback in terms of how our worship may help enhance their spiritual lives further. Therefore, with the Vestry’s support, I will call a Worship Committee meeting soon to discuss the details of launching the new Family Mass once a month in the fall. In addition, this committee will advise me on how best to promote and attract our parishioners to come to church every Sunday, and especially on important feast days. I will appoint representatives from different ministries within the parish to come to this Worship Committee meeting. If you are interested in being part of it, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I look forward to the launching of our Family Mass together, with God's help and our united, prayerful effort! Yours ever in Christ’s love, The Reverend Alistair So

The Rector’s Letter

M y Dear People of God,

O LORD our Governor, how exalted isyour Name in all the world! Out of the mouths ofinfants and children your majesty is praised abovethe heavens. (Psalm 8:1-2)

The Psalmist in ancient Israel understood theimportance of children in our worship of God. Likethe voices of the angels, the innocent words out ofthe mouths of infants and children ascend to theheavens above. As a priest, I recall how fulfilling itwas when I led the worship services for the childrenof the St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Day School duringmy time at that parish from 2005 to 2008. At All Hallows', those who have attended themonthly Family Mass in the undercroft of the ParishHouse have attested to how enriching that experi-ence has been, both for the children and the adults.

At our May Vestry Meeting, I led a discussionconcerning the future of the Family Mass, knowingthat Mthr. Vestry and Parish News

June: a month of special SundaysOn June 2 , we will say godspeed and thank you tond

Mthr. Meredith Kefauver Olsen for her excellent serviceto All Hallows in the development of our ChristianFormation program. She established the monthly FamilyMass to teach the children—even the very young—wor-ship with a formal liturgy in a relaxed setting. It hasbeen equally rewarding to the parents as to their chil-dren. Fr. Alistair and the teachers are working out thedetails on how to maintain this service even thoughwe’ll have less clergy to run it.

We will bid Mthr. Meredith, Derek, Greta, andHannah Olsen a fond farewell and wish them well afterthe 10:30 service. On that day, the Sunday School pupilswill take on the roles of greeter/ushers, acolyte, crucifer, lector, and intercessor.

Our annual Parish picnic will mark the year end witha cook-out in the churchyard. All Hallows will provideburgers, dogs, rolls, and drinks. You bring the sides—your favorite recipe for salad or dessert.

June 9 will see our final— really! final!—Forumth

on Christian Formation, as the Rev. Charles Cloughen,Director for Stewardship and Planned Giving for theDiocese of Maryland, will present a seminar on how youcan help the parish even as you benefit yourself. Yourfuture is the future of All Hallows.

On June 16 we will see the unveiling of the map ofthe Brick Church cemetery. This the very sophisticatedwork of Thomas Stefany, a Boy Scout who took on thiswork for community service to earn his Eagle Scoutranking. He will be honored during the 10:30 service.

The Vestry voted unanimously to send a donation inthe name of All Hallows Parish to the Whitehall Ceme-tery Foundation in memory of Orlando Ridout V, whoserved as an excellent consultant to the CemeteryCommittee for the historic preservation of All Hallows.

July 16 is also Father’sDay, and the women of theparish will provide a super cof-fee hour with pies for the men.Turnabout is fair play— menserved up a delicious coffeehour on Mothers’ Day.

The Redeemer Quilterswill break for the summer afterJune 14 and will resume their

Friday sessions on August 28 . Men’s Breakfast hasth

finished its year and will start up again on September 21.Thursday noon day Eucharist at the Chapel will scaleback to once a month: June 13, July 11, and August 15.

Anne Buffington wrote and illustrated a children’sbook titled What’s in that cat’s ear?. It is available onAmazon and she will have a book signing soon. JoanPlacido is home from the hospital recovering from aninfection from pneumonia. Margaret Bagley is in rehabat her home in the Collington retirement village after aknee replacement.

D.W. Masonry, Inc. completed their rebuilding ofthe north chimney of the Chapel on April 26 ; their finalth

invoice reflected a discount of $1,640.00 from theVestry-approved amount of $10,000.00. The parking lotat the Brick Church will soon have four more spacesreserved for handicap licensed cars.

All Hallows submitted two applications for grants tothe Diocese. The Diocesan Grants Committee was tomeet on May 22, to decide on grants. If both of ourswere accepted the parish would receive about $15,000 ofthe $17,000 we estimate for the cost of an adequateaudio system for the Brick Church, a capital investmentin the future of All Hallows. We hope for an answer thissummer.

Fr. Alistair met with the Sunday School teachers andthe Compensation and Benefits Committee to refine thejob description for a director of Christian Formation. Itis posted on the Diocese’s website and will be sent outwith the Diocese’s weekly mailing. After June 2, you

will see it in e-Tidings. Gail Enright Registrar

2013 Diocesan Convention

Patrick Sullivan submitted the following report to theVestry for the May 14 meeting.Diocesan Convention is a time when representatives

from around our diocese gather to share in the polity ofthe Church, upholding the common mission and ministryof our Lord Jesus Christ. All Hallows’ representatives atthe Convention were Rev. Alistair So (voting clergy)and Patrick Sullivan (voting lay). The Rev. MeredithKefauver Olsen (voting clergy), Seminarian BernardAnderson, and David Patterson (lay alternate) alsoattended.

Twelve resolutions were presented for considerationof the convention of which he selected five that werepassed, to bring to the Vestry’s attention. They do notrequire acceptance by All Hallows. The action verbs formost of these resolutions are challenge, call, encourage, and requests for All Hallows’ action, not a mandate toadopt.

2013-02 - Passed as submitted: Challenges everycongregation to offer one or more Christian formationprograms or opportunities for personal faith storytellingbefore convention of 2015; and strongly urges eachcongregation to ask members’ permission to publishtheir faith stories on the congregation’s website, innewsletters or on social media pages as an evangelismtool.2013-03 - Passed as amended: Calls upon all congrega-tions, to include as part of every meeting beginning June1, 2013, until the next Diocese Convention May 2, 2014,no matter what the purpose, the following agenda item:“How will what we are doing here impact or involvepeople living in poverty?”2013-04 - Passed as submitted (Clergy and Lay Em-ployee Compensation): This resolution is rather long. Irecommend for the May 14th Vestry to refer analysis ofthis resolution to the Executive Committee to identifyany impacts to All Hallows’ Parish Clergy and LayEmployee Compensation. Request the Executive Com-mittee to report back to the Vestry before its (determinemonth) 2013 meeting.2013-09 - Passed as amended, A Strategic Response toGun Violence: the Diocese of Maryland encourages itsparishes, missions, organizations and individual mem-bers to endorse the Non -Violence Pledge.2013-10 - Passed as amended, The Establishment of GunFree Zones: Requests every parish, mission and everydiocesan place of work to consider declaring theirestablishments as Gun Free Zones.

As Patrick requested, the Vestry read and consideredthem and their relevance to our situation, and decided to

take no action on them as we find All Hallows incompliance with the spirit of the resolutions.

Sustaining Hope in the Face of Climate Change

Father Alistair attended a special dinner receptionat the Swedish Embassy in Washington, DC, earlylast month at the end of an ecumenical conference

called Sustaining hope in the face of climate change. It was a joint effort by the Episcopal Church, the

Church of Sweden, and the Evangelical LutheranChurch in America. The leaders of the three churchesissued a joint statement at the conference, in which therewas a confession stating the role of the church vis-a-visthe challenges facing God’s creation in our time andplace.

“Accordingly, we confess our own role in the crisisfacing our world: We confess that, even as God hasentrusted the care of the world to human hands, we havetreated this sacred trust as a license to consume ratherthan build up, to reap rather than to sow.

We confess that we have placed the interests of ourown comfort and lifestyle before the good of creationand the wellbeing of others, particularly the mostvulnerable among us.

We confess our own indifference to the wellbeing ofthe countless future generations who will bear the bruntof the choices we make today.

For these things and all else we have done to con-tribute to the desecration of the world God so loves, werepent and ask forgiveness.

At the same time, we draw hope – and a groundingfor amendment of our own lives – in the growing bodyof evidence that a transition to a low-carbon society isboth feasible and economical, and may help foster agood life.

We commit to being the voice that challenges ourcommunities to action: in the global community, in ourown political contexts, and in our daily lives.

We commit to being the voice and hands that willwitness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and build the moraland political will that prompts action from our electedleaders. As international churches with congregations inmany nations, we can and will use our global networksto promote a political framework to limit climatechange, while in a unified voice we speak to the worldabout the urgency of committed climate work. Wecommit to leading a conversion of epic scale, a metanoia—or communal spiritual movement—away from sin anddespair toward the renewal and healing of all creation.”

In his sermon of May 5, Father Alistair tied theconcerns of climate change to the theme of RogationSunday, as he described the steps All Hallows is takingtoward environmental responsibility:

“We have had an energy audit for all of our build-ings, but we have yet to implement many of the changesthat will make our buildings more energy efficient andsave money for other ministry programs. We are activein recycling our paper products. And recently, we installed two compost systems at the Brick Churchcampus for recycling food wastes. What else can we doto promote recycling? There are some simple stepsthrough which we can help with this effort and call.

The Energy Minister of Province I of the EpiscopalChurch, the Reverend Stephanie Johnson, who is also amember of the Executive Council Committee on Sci-ence, Technology and Faith, which I chair, gave mepromotional stickers to remind church people to becomemore energy-friendly. The sticker says, ‘Turn off thelight for God’s sake!’ Do we close the doors behind uswhen we leave a building. What is our practice at home?

There is always more to be done, of course. And wemay ask, how will my little action help to alter thecourse of climate change anyway? I assure you, theseenvironment-conscious practices are the good deeds weare called to perform by our faith.

Our efforts in being good stewards of God’s creationwill yield fruits with far-reaching impact. Not only willour efforts have an impact for our children, but they willalso help ensure that we are doing our part for passingon a healthier, more sustainable, and more livable worldfor our children’s children, and many more generationsto come.”
