  • Prayers of the People 3 November 2019

In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Church of Bermuda. In our Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for St. Luke’s, Ottawa, and for hospital and nursing home ministries throughout our diocese. In our Parish, we pray for Ellsworth Murray, Stephen Murray, Pierre Nantais, Laurena Nash, and all who look to our Parish as their spiritual home. We remember those for whom our prayers have been asked: Patricia Boyce, Geoffrey, Joshua, Roger Beland, Emma and Family, Harvey Cottrell, Vera Iodko, The Rev. Deacon Henry Stauffenberg, Jarod, David Blackman, Murray Nash, Polly Dougherty, Issac, Emily, Mary and Rob, Ronald Bentley, Bishop John Chapman, Bishop William Love, Fr. Borden, Joe O’Brien, Maurice Therrien, Mark Wehrle, Helen K., Hugh, Mary Fereday, Quinn Smith, Morris Redman, Phyllis James, Venice Barrett, Fr. Steven Kelly, Tracey, Tony Fereday, Tom, Fred Valmont and for all living with anxiety and depression. For troubled areas of the world, we pray for the Middle East, with the continuing troubles in Syria, Palestine, Gaza, and Israel, Yemen, Sri Lanka, the Kurdish people, all suffering from disease, war, terrorism, and natural disaster, especially those affected by hurricane Dorian, and for our Canadian Forces and aid workers serving worldwide. For those celebrating a birthday: Donna James, and Jennifer Veitch. For those celebrating an anniversary: Stewart and Connie Murray. For all the faithful departed: Shirley Browne, Godfrey Emile “Bud” Masse, June Sim, Martin Schlarb, Harley Graham, for the martyrs of the Assyrian Church in Syria, and members of our family and friends.

All Saints and All Souls The commemoration of All Saints’ Day is an ancient Christian tradition, dating back to the 4th century when a feast honouring the martyrs of the faith was kept in the Eastern Church. Between the 7th and 9th centuries, a tradition of honouring the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs, eventually extending to all saints, was firmly established in the Western Church. By 800 AD All Saints’ Day was kept in England on 1 November. The purpose of the feast day is to commemorate all the saints who have gone before us and entered in glory. Their lives were marked by a pattern of holiness, and they stand as an encouraging example to all of us still on our earthly pilgrimage. Whilst All Saints’ Day commemorates those already gathered around the throne of glory, All Souls’ Day, which falls on 2 November, commemorates the souls of the faithful departed, traditionally within the context of a requiem mass.

In memoriam The flowers on the high altar and the light before the Blessed Sacrament

are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Martin Schlarb and Harley Graham,

by the families who cherish their memory.
