From Fr. Joe The readings for this 29th Sunday in Ordinary

Time talk about prayer and the need to pray

constantly and persistently. Sometimes that can

seem impossible. Really, come on, how can we

pray constantly? Our lives are already so busy,

how does God expect us to spend all of our time

praying?

Maybe the real problem here is what we

mean by praying and who does it. If our idea of

prayer is limited to saying words of the familiar

prayers we’ve grown up with, or even of

reading/praying/meditating on the scriptures –

all of which are ways of praying – then well it just

might be impossible (and maybe even a little

boring). But that is because we have put limits

on what prayer is.

In the first reading from Exodus we see Moses

praying on behalf of the people in their

battle against the Amalekites. As long as his

hands are raised up in prayer things go well for

the Israelites, but when Moses grows weary and

his prayer fades (represented by the position of

his hands) things go badly. What are we to

make of this? Is God so petty that how an old

man holds his hands determines the outcome of

the Chosen People? Look a little more intently at

the reading. Yes, sometimes prayer takes a long

time, or the results don’t come as quickly as we’d

wish, so the length of our prayer may make us

weary. In those times we need to support each

other in our prayer and not just rely on certain

individuals to do all the praying for us. There is a

communal dimension to prayer, albeit at times

with different roles (e.g. Aaron and Hur stayed by

Moses and held his arms for him), but still some-

thing we do together. Besides Aaron and Hur

assisting Moses, Joshua and his men had to do

their part for the outcome by actually engaging

in the physical battle with the Amalekites.

In the Gospel, Jesus’ parable shows us a

widow being persistent in engaging the judge for

a just ruling. She had to go to him again, and

again, and again. She didn’t just sit around in a

state of wishful thinking; she had to do

something.

Do you remember back in 2010 (I know for

some that is ancient history) the rescue of 33 min-

ers in Chile? It was nine years ago this past week

that the news of the dramatic rescue of the

trapped Chilean miners came to a head as they

were pulled out one-by-one after more than two

months being trapped 2,300 feet underground!

Yes, the world prayed for those miners and their

families, and rightfully so. But part of prayer is

doing our part (i.e. someone had to be drilling

through all that rock!) and not just asking God to

take care of it all. The following is an excerpt

from Fr. Ronald Rolheiser’s book The Holy Longing

(p. 83), which speaks to this point:

From Fr. Joe Continued (Continued from page 2)

As Christians, we have a set formula for

ending all of our prayers – “we ask this

through Christ our Lord.” This formula is more

than a formality, a ritual signal to God that the

prayer is over. When we pray “through

Christ” we are praying through the Body of

Christ, which then includes Jesus, the

Eucharist, and the body of believers

(ourselves) here on earth. We are praying

through all of these. Thus, not only God in

heaven is being petitioned and asked to act.

We are also charging ourselves, as part of the

Body of Christ, with some responsibility for

answering the prayer. To pray as a Christian

demands concrete involvement in trying to

bring about what is pleaded for in the prayer.

As we pray for our concerns and those of the

world, we need to be persistent and help one

another. Just as Aaron and Hur supported Moses

when he grew weary, let’s be there for one

another when someone among us grows weary

in their prayer. And together, as the Body of

Christ – which, remember, is worldwide – whether

it is in Mass or other prayer forms, we can – and

do – pray always. So … let us pray.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you know that the Liturgy of the Hours

(e.g. Morning and Evening Prayer) is another

way we, as the Church, pray always? The

various “Hours” are being prayed somewhere on

the earth at any given moment as the day

moves along. And sometimes when one of the

psalms or a reading may not be meaningful or

speaking to you at that particular moment, it is

for someone somewhere on the earth. As the

Church we are praying for the whole world, not

just for ourselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please take note of a change regarding the

schedule of prayer and confessions for Friday

evening /night which will start the first full week of

November. The Friday 7-8 pm confessions and

7:45 pm Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours

will take place at St. Mary Church, where

Perpetual Adoration is. So, starting November

8th, on Fridays, after Evening Prayer is prayed at

St. Anne Church, the doors will be locked and

the remaining Friday prayer opportunities and

confessions will be at St. Mary Church.

Have a blessed and prayerful week.

Stewardship in Our Readings Today's theme is perseverance-Moses keeping his hands upraised

throughout the battle, Paul urging Timothy to stay with the task of

preaching and teaching, and the widow appealing to the corrupt judge.

To be faithful stewards of God's gifts, we too must persevere in the roles to

which we are called.

World Mission Sunday This Weekend!

Today, World Mission Sunday, in this

Extraordinary Missionary Month, we are called

to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ alive

in the Church, and to offer, through this

Eucharistic celebration, our prayers and our

generous financial support, through the Society

for the Propagation of the Faith, to continue

the mission of Jesus. Today we are sent out to

witness and to Mission in the world through our

prayers and personal sacrifices for our brothers

and sisters around the world. As little as…

• $25 helps support a catechist for a month in

remote Latin America

• $75 provides for the work of religious Sisters

caring for orphaned children in Africa

• $100 assists poor children in boarding

schools in Asia

As always, your prayers are your most treasured

gift to the Missions. Your prayers and financial

help, offered today, WORLD MISSION SUNDAY,

support mission priests, religious Sisters and

Brothers, and lay catechists who are Christ’s

witnesses to a world so in need of His healing,

love, and peace.

Envelopes for this special collection are

included in parishioner October envelope

packets and there are extra envelopes at the

entrances.

Attention Homebound Ministers Our Catholic Women’s Group and All Saints students have put together

small gifts for our homebound in celebration of All Saints Day.

Beginning this weekend, these gifts can be picked up after the weekend

Masses and during the week in the Sodality Room (nearest Lockwood

Street and the railroad tracks).

A binder with a list is available to mark off the names of those whom you

will be delivering a gift.

Perpetual Adoration: A Note about the Doors

Question: Why was the Miller Street door chosen as the only entrance to

use instead of the doors that face 2nd Avenue?

Answer: Security and safety. We wanted to make sure the door we

would be using was easy for anyone to lock. The doors that face 2nd

Avenue can be tricky to lock for both staff and volunteers. Just this past

week, an adorer in the late evening hours noticed movement within the

Church. It was particularly windy that night and the adorer discovered

someone had exited at some point through the 2nd Avenue doors and

those doors didn’t shut properly to engage the lock, leaving that

entrance open.

Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, and those adoring: While we

obviously want to share our Lord with everyone, we also wanted to make

sure those who visit Adoration are intentionally there to do so, versus foot

traffic from those who pass by 2nd Avenue who may just want to look in

to see what is going on.

Additionally, the steps are enclosed within the structure making for a safer

climb in winter for those who use the stairs and not the elevator.

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family,

embraced by God’s love. We are centered on the

Holy Eucharist, inspired by the Communion of Saints

and empowered by the Holy Spirit to enliven and

ignite a community bound by love. We are united in

vibrant service under the leadership of the Trinity.

Parish Mission We, the members of All Saints Parish are called as a

sacramental people to grow in our faith and

participate fully in the one Body of Christ, centered in

the Eucharist. We value each other’s gifts and talents

as we serve the needs of our community while living

the truth and love of the Gospel.

Need a Ride to Mass?

Our parish partners

with Thunder Bay Transportation Authority to

provide a ride for those who are in need.

Those who need a ride will need to call TBTA

(ph: 989-356-4596) two hours before you would

like to be picked up to schedule your ride. If

you wish to have it charged, you must tell TBTA

dispatcher you are charging it to All Saints

Parish (we will not be doing reimbursements as

we would have no proof of a ride).

The parish will cover the ride only to/from

Church for the 4 PM Saturday Mass and the

11 AM Sunday Mass (based on the hours of

operation for TBTA).
