ALL SAINTS’ DAY PRAYER OF THE DAY

Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love: grant that we may serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints who ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING Isaiah 25. 6-9

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God Commentary: This reading comes within the block of material known as 'The Isaiah Apoca-lypse' (Isaiah 24-27). It is immediately preceded by the oracles against the nations (Isaiah 13-23) and is followed by a number of 'woe' oracles against Ephraim (Northern kingdom) and Ju-dah which contain within them threats of dire punishment. The view of the future within these chapters is universal in outlook and speaks of God's power in the cosmic as well as the earthly realm. This passage concentrates on an announcement of Yahweh's blessing which concludes with the restoration of Israel to Jerusalem.

PSALM 24 Response: May we receive a blessing from the Lord. The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it: the compass of the world and those who dwell therein. For he has founded it upon the seas: and established it upon the waters………..Response Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord: or who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and a pure heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor sworn their oath to a lie. They shall receive blessing from the Lord: and recompense from the God of their salvation………..Response Of such a king as this are those who seek him: those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle………..Response Lift up your heads, O you gates, and be lifted up, you everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory………..Response

SECOND READING Revelation 21. 1-6

A reading from the Revelation to John

I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mor-tals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’ And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.’ Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God Commentary: The Bible begins and ends with a description of a perfect world. The perfect Garden of Eden in Genesis finds its counterpart in the vision of a new heaven and a new earth, and the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. Hebrew thought did not envis-age a world that progressively improved itself. It envisaged a new world order that only God could bring about. John’s writing picks up this idea. He uses traditional concepts, including a belief that the world was three tiered, with the middle tier, the flat earth, surrounded by threatening water. Water was the home of the chaotic forces of evil, and so for this reason, around the new earth, the sea was no more. The climax of the vision is the statement that God is among mortals - the fulfillment of a hope expressed again and again by the prophets of the Old Testament. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, indi-cating that Christ is the origin and destiny of all things. (Look for these letters on the Paschal Candle.)

GOSPEL John 11. 32-44 Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ Alleluia!

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John, chapter 11, beginning at the 32nd verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, ‘See how he loved him!’ But some of them said, ‘Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?’ Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Commentary: Lazarus the brother of Mary and Martha at Bethany near Jerusalem, has died and, as was the custom, been buried in a tomb the same day. It was believed that the spirit of a person hovered over the body for three days, during which time a return to life was just con-ceivable. After that decomposition began and death was irrevocable. Jesus did not arrive un-til the fourth day making the ‘sign’ - (the Gospel writer never uses the word ‘miracle’) exceed all bounds of imagined possibility. The episode speaks for itself.

Sentence And a great multitude, from every nation and tribe and people and language, cried with a loud voice, saying ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb!’ Revelation 7:10

PRIESTLY ORDINATION OF TIMOTHY NICHOLSON: It was a great delight recently to be able to announce that Timothy will be ordained Priest at St John’s Cathedral on Saturday 1 December at 10am. We anticipate that many parishioners will want to attend Timothy’s Ordination and we will be arranging a bus for those who would like to attend. It looks as though we can get a bus for $25 per person, leaving Caloundra about 7.15am and stopping at Beerwah before dropping us at The Cathedral. We will then return via the same route, leaving Brisbane about 1.00pm. More details will be available next week. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Timothy, please include your gift in a marked envelope and place it in the offertory plate over the coming weeks. Following ordination, Timothy will continue as Assistant Priest in our Parish. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Parish. Parish Council and I believe there are some good opportunities for Timothy to help us further our mission and ministry. We know that this will continue to stretch us financially but we see wonderful opportunities for the future. Timothy’s first Eucharists as Priest will be on Sunday 2 December. I am still looking for feedback on the possibility of a Combined Service at St Andrew’s to highlight the importance of presiding for the first time for Timothy. Timothy will then preside for the first time at St Thomas’ on Wednesday 5 December (and we will follow that with morning tea at the local Café) and then at Mary MacKillop on Sunday 9 December where we will have another special morning tea. Please pray for Timothy and June and their wider family. It is a true delight to be able to continue to journey with them. I ask you to pray for our parish as we take this next step and continue to stretch out in faith.

APPOINTMENT OF AARON COATES TO KAWANA WATERS PARISH It was with great delight that we announced last Sunday that Aaron has been appointed as a Ministry Intern at HTK for 2019. He will complete his Clinical Pastoral Education and then we anticipate he will be ordained Deacon in the middle of the year. This is a very exciting time for Aaron but please pray for him as he leaves Qld Health and takes up this new appointment from 1st January 2019. Aaron will be with us until the end of December and I am arranging a date for a formal farewell in December. If you would like to contribute to a gift for Aaron, please include your gift in a marked envelope and place it in the offertory plate over the coming weeks.

___________________________ CHARITY OF THE MONTH: The Charity of the Month for NOVEMBER is The Archbishop’s November Appeal. Donations should be put in an envelope marked “November - Charity of the Month” (or use one of the ABM envelopes available at the Welcome Desks) and placed in the offertory plate. Advent Study Groups. Timothy and June Nicholson will be leading a four week Advent Study Course: “So What Are You Waiting For?” The season of Advent bends time itself. And for us, time drags or speeds by, depending on our circumstances and stage of life. Our attitude to time gives us clues about our attitude towards God. Whether you’re always in a hurry or have too much time on your hands, this course is for you, as we explore a spiritual life that encourages us to be active in the chronological world, and rooted in Kairos, God’s time. Sign-up sheets at Welcome Desks. Booklets $8 each—please speak directly to Timothy or June. Tuesday evenings 7-9pm at St Andrew’s, commencing 27 November Friday afternoons 2-4pm at Mary MacKillop, commencing 23 November (no study on 30 November).

Charity of the Month—November Archbishop’s Appeal for ABM

This year, the Archbishop’s November appeal for ABM aims to raise funds to support the work of the Anglican Community in Yarrabah in North Queensland.

The retiring Bishop of North Queensland writes:

“About three years ago the Diocese of North Queensland spent considerable funds in restoring the Church at Yarrabah. In January I commissioned a new priest as a missioner for Yarrabah, the Reverend Annette Woods.

There is an urgent need for resources. Some of them are:

• Provide Faithfulness in Service Training.

• Training is also required in how to lead liturgy and use the Prayer Book. We need more prayer books and Bibles and access to e-pray.

• The hall has undergone repairs but more work will be required. The hall is a neutral location for Christian Education and other ministry activities.

• Resources such as the Bethel Bible Studies would be a great help.

• Funds to send leaders to retreats and diocesan conferences.”

Archbishop Phillip is encouraging the Province to raise $10,000 to help reinvigorate this parish. If more is received, then it will be used to support other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander congregations in desperate need of resources.

The diocesan magazine ‘Focus’ is now an online publication at https://anglicanfocus.org.au/.

You can subscribe to receive email updates containing the latest from the site. For those without computer access, a fortnightly printable file is available—please let the office

know.
