EDITORIAL Welcome to the June issue of The Link, a little early because of our printer’s travels, but at a point in the year when many outdoor activities are in full swing!

It is only about six months since we marked the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of WWI and the Treaty of Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919.

However, there are those in the community who will remember the uncertainty of life during the summer of 1939 - a last opportunity to appreciate

peace and freedom before the unknown of WWII.

The first major WWII event to be marked nationally, the start of the 75th

anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy, will be held in Portsmouth and Bayeaux on 5 and 6 June.

Those of us too young to remember must appreciate the peace and freedom we have today.

FROM THE VICARAGE Switching on the Power

One of the most important lessons I’ve learnt over the years – though it doesn’t stop me frequently making the same mistake - is that simply switching the kettle on doesn’t get the water hot! There have been many cups of coffee made with cold water due to this one simple fact. If you don’t actually plug it in in the first place, the switch on the kettle has no effect – and even then you need to switch the plug on at the wall: that’s another aspect of the same lesson that has been learned when getting to the other side of the garden to use the lawn mower – all plugged in, lawnmower to extension lead, extension lead to wall socket, and then you try and use the mower … nothing. Every part of the connection needs to be right, every switch needs to be set correctly, and then – amazingly when you come to think about the whole national grid network – POWER! Power to mow the lawn, power to heat the water, power to get that much needed and awaited cup of coffee (I’ll pause and have one now!)

That’s better – I too feel more empowered.

Talking of switches, did anyone else have a mum who added eyebrows and lashes over the screws and a smile under the ‘nose-like’ switch on the light switches on the wall? Probably not – but that fact might help people understand why I have such a weird sense of humour. Of course, there would also be the occasional biblical “Let there be light!” proclaimed as the switch’s ‘nose’ was pressed – and there was light. (see Genesis 1:3).

It is in these first three verses of the Bible that we find the fulness of the power of God – the three persons of the Trinity – working in unity. The Father conceives, the Word (the Son) speaks, and the Spirit acts, ‘and there was light’. This month, we celebrate the feast of Pentecost (also known as Whitsun), which is when we remember the day when the Christian Church was ‘born’ – when the disciples got on the Kingdom of God’s national grid.

Jesus, the Word of God, the Son, had died, risen and, 40 days later, ascended to heaven to return to the Father. God’s plan of salvation for the world had been fulfilled through his sacrificial death, paying the price of our sin and restoring our hope of eternal life.

But Jesus had promised that he would be with ALL his followers ALL the time. As one man in one place, he could not fulfil that promise, but by sending the Holy Spirit to them in his place – freed from physical constraints – the promise was, and is, fulfilled. The disciples on that day of Pentecost, ten days after the Ascension, found that they were ‘plugged in and switched on’. It was God’s power, by their own willingness to serve, that was now to be experienced and that is what enabled this small group of weak and fearful men to faithfully and fearlessly proclaim the Gospel message such that within a very short period, the message had spread its transforming power around the known world – and continues to do so today. That same Spirit of God comes to all who will turn to Christ and who are also willing to be ‘plugged in and switched on’.

If anyone would like to talk about this power of God, which every one of us could experience in our daily lives, I’d be delighted to see you. Jim Perryman

Flourish – Support for teenage girls As Kerstin Friend from Flourish is speaking locally we’re including information about this charity:

“Following years of working with hundreds of young people, especially teenage girls in churches, schools and the community we had become dissatisfied with the status-quo.

“We couldn’t stand and watch as girls grow up bombarded with mixed messages of the ‘ideal’ girl and popular culture shouting ‘you are not enough’ undermining their true identity. Flourish was born in 2015 from a passion to see a generation of teenage girls understand their true value and identity.

“In this anxiety-inducing culture Flourish exists to empower every girl to rediscover who they are, their immeasurable value, unchanging worth and world changing capabilities.

“The services we provide aim to restore self-worth, rebuild lives and release potential in the lives of girls living in the Leamington Spa and Warwick area.”

PARISH COUNCIL Clerk to the Parish Council : Helen Eldridge t : 853841

e : [email protected]

The Parish Council held its Annual Meeting on Tuesday, 7 May 2019, at Leek Wootton Village Hall. This was followed by the monthly Parish Council Meeting. Discussion at the two meetings included the following:

ELECTION 2019 This meeting was the first of the ‘new’ Parish Council since the uncontested election, which saw all 8 previous Councillors re-elected. Cllr Richard Coates was elected as Chairman and Cllr Paul Eldridge as Vice-Chairman.

This was also the first meeting with our new representatives on Warwick District Council, Pam Redford (CON) and Trevor Wright (CON). They represent the new WDC ward of Cubbington & Leek Wootton, which encompasses the communities of Cubbington, Stoneleigh and Baginton as far north as the A46/A45 junction at Finham/Baginton. The Chairman congratulated and welcomed the new District Councillors and they introduced themselves and initiatives they have supported in their time in office so far (previously representing Stoneleigh & Cubbington Ward).

They have a blog/website for the ward at www.cubbingtonandleekwootton.net and can be contacted via this site.

WOODCOTE (POLICE HQ) / ANNUAL PARISH ASSEMBLY A reminder that the Annual Parish Assembly is at 7:00pm on Tuesday, 28 May, at Leek Wootton Village Hall. Philip Seccombe, Police & Crime Commissioner for Warwickshire is coming to speak and answer your questions about the future of Woodcote, housing development(s) that were planned on the estate and other estate property.

Please come and put your questions to him in person.

This is also an opportunity for residents, businesses, workers and volunteers within the community to meet and share their news and also meet our District and County Councillors as well as Parish Councillors and ask any questions, so please come along.

We are aware that this meeting falls within half-term and if you are not able to come, but have questions, please send these to the Clerk ([email protected]) and we will make sure that they are asked on your behalf.

HORSE FAIR 25-28 April came and went without the Horse Fair appearing at Thickthorn or anywhere else locally. Instead, the fair was held in Nuthall, Nottinghamshire on that weekend and plans have been announced that they intend to return there twice more this year. It is hoped this will be a conclusion to local concerns.

LEEK WOOTTON WAR MEMORIAL RECREATION GROUND CAR PARK There was disappointing news that an application to the Lottery Fund towards the car park works was turned down. This may affect the project in that it may not be possible to complete the entire planned project of the main car park and overflow at the same time. However, the Village Hall needs to proceed with its drainage works and, with alternative sources of grants and a public fundraising campaign almost ready to begin, the PC hopes to raise sufficient funds to carry out the essential work to enlarge the main car park area. With this in mind, the PC will ask the project group to look at the possibility of implementing a one-way gyratory system to help the flow of traffic.

NEXT MEETING The next meeting is at 7:30pm on Tuesday, 4 June 2019, at Leek Wootton Village Hall.

Minutes of all Parish Council meetings, when signed, are published on the website at www.leekwootton.org.uk. Any local issues can always be raised at meetings under Public Question Time or by contacting any of the Parish Councillors or the Clerk, details of whom are listed on all noticeboards, the Parish Council website, in the Parish Directory and the Bulletin.

OBITUARIES We publish here brief obituaries for members of the community who have died recently. We send condolences to their relatives, and to all who have recently been bereaved.

David Ronald Morgan

1949-2019

David was born in London, educated at Kings’ College Wimbledon and went to Glasgow University. After graduating in 1974 with a distinction in pathology, he took up hospital posts in Glasgow and Falkirk before training as a GP in Edinburgh.

He married in 1980 and moved to Liverpool where he became a GP partner at Old Swan Health Centre and a member of the committee that inaugurated the Department of General Practice at Liverpool University. He became a part-time lecturer there and a part-time Medical Officer in the Paediatric A&E Department at Alder Hey Hospital. He moved to Birmingham to become Senior Lecturer at Birmingham University and GP in the inner-city Lee Bank area. He spent the remainder of his career - some 29 years - at that practice where he was a GP Trainer and an undergraduate tutor. His two children, Iona and Alasdair, were born in Birmingham.

David was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners and of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow and the Royal College of Physicians in England. He gained a doctorate in medicine and wrote several academic papers.

Wherever he worked, David was an active member of his local Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners and was elected Provost of the Midland Faculty in 2010. He was their Research Convenor and is honoured at the annual research symposium by having a prize named after him. He was the GP member of Birmingham Children’s Hospital Ethics Advisory Group from 2014- 2018.

David and Joy moved to Leek Wootton in 2011 and they married in 2013. He gained a stepdaughter, Béa, and, in time, two grandchildren whom he adored. David enjoyed every minute of living in a village for the first time, including ringing handbells and singing in the choir at Christmas. After retiring from general practice in 2014, he became an enthusiastic cook, joined Leamington Spa Photographic Club and became a member of Probus. He also became a Trustee to the Myton Hospices.

David survived a heart attack in his early 40s but, despite every endeavour to keep fit and healthy, developed life-threatening heart rhythm problems shortly after his retirement. He bore repeated bouts of cardiac ill health with bravery and determination. In April he underwent repeat surgery to try to ameliorate his heart rhythm problems, but sadly died shortly afterwards.

David was known as a skilful doctor and a kind and compassionate, hard-working man of great integrity and humility, with a quiet and mischievous sense of humour. He loved medicine and he loved people, and people loved and respected him.

Thank you Joy, Iona, Alasdair and Béa would like to thank everyone for all the thoughtful messages, cards and flowers sent to them following David’s untimely death in April. We are upheld by all the love, kindness and support that continues to be offered to us. David would have been very surprised that, having lived in Leek Wootton for only 5 years, so many people attended the service at All Saints Church to celebrate his life and gave so generously to the British Heart Foundation and the Myton Hospices in his memory. We are grateful to everyone who supported us that day and are thankful that the service, which David himself had largely devised, touched so many hearts and minds. His colleagues in health care and his patients will be honouring his contribution to general practice at a memorial service at the Cathedral Church of St Philip, Colmore Row, Birmingham, at 11:00am on Saturday, 6 July. Friends and neighbours are warmly invited to attend.

2019 National Federation WI Resolutions Earlier in the year National Federation WI released details of the six shortlisted proposed Resolutions for 2019. As often happens, they were all considered to be worthy Resolutions, but we could only vote for one. So, after hearing an overview of each Resolution, members were given a voting slip and the Resolution that received the majority of the votes was put forward as the chosen Resolution from LWWI.

The results were released in March, revealing that two resolutions had received more than half the total votes cast from over 105 thousand WI units across the country. The two were; ‘Don’t Fear the Smear’, which received 20,625 votes and 35,194 votes for ‘Decline in Local Buses’. Consequently, a further vote will now take place to vote for, or indeed against each resolution. If both resolutions are passed, then WIs across the country will support and work on both issues during 2019. Here is a brief overview of the two Resolutions:

Don’t Fear the Smear

‘Cervical screening saves around 5,000 lives a year, yet attendance is currently at its lowest for a decade. The National Federation WI urges WI members to attend routine screening, to take action to raise awareness of the importance of cervical screening and address barriers to attendance to help eradicate cancer.’

The number of women attending routine cervical screening is falling despite the number of lives the test saves each year. Regular cervical screening is the best way for abnormal cells to be picked up early and treated, to prevent cancer

developing. It is estimated that the test currently prevents 70% of cervical cancer deaths. However, this figure could be 83% if all eligible women attended.

LEEK WOOTTON LINK | JUNE 2019

17

Worryingly the figures show that attendance is the lowest amongst women aged 25 to 29 (62.1%) yet cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women under the age of 35.

Public Health England cites several barriers to attendance including; embarrassment to attend screening appointments, lack of awareness about the risk, to concerns about the procedure being painful. Therefore the WI on a national and also importantly on a one-to-one basis, could be instrumental in raising public understanding of, and engagement with, this vitally important screening programme.

Decline in Local Buses

‘Over the last decade there has been a massive decline in the number of bus services, particularly of those in rural and semi-rural areas. In order to alleviate loneliness, improve health and wellbeing, as well as promoting sustainable development, the National Federation WI calls on the Government and local authorities to increase subsidies and work in partnership with bus companies and community transport operators to enable an adequate provision of services.'

Since 2010, local authorities have faced budget cuts, which has put pressure on the delivery of local services. Those without access to a car rely heavily on public transport and the loss of a bus service can subsequently reduce access to services and facilities and can, at the same time, contribute to social exclusion and loneliness. According to the Campaign for Better Transport, council bus budgets have been cut by 45% and local authorities were found to have taken £182 million away from supported bus services over the last decade, affecting more than 3,000 bus services across England and Wales.

Therefore, to support this Resolution the NFWI could work with organisations such as the Campaign for Better Transport and local government and councils, to encourage more funding to local authorities for the provision of bus services. It should be noted that if a service is not used then it’s not surprising that it may decline, or indeed be withdrawn, so the WI can make a difference by using and encouraging others to use the local bus, whenever possible.

It’s clear to see why these Resolutions are important and the reason why the WI was approached to support their causes is because over the past 100 years the WI has campaigned on a wide range of issues that matter to women and also those that may impact our local community.

These two Resolutions demonstrate that if there is an issue that could benefit from heightened awareness and support, the WI does not shy away. If that’s not one of the great reasons to be a proud WI member, then I don’t know what is.

Celebrating 150 Years of Cycling In September 2016, in the wake of the first Aviva Women’s Tour ride through Kenilworth and Leek Wootton, we included this article:

After the 2016 Aviva Women’s Tour in June, local historian Robin Leach speculated that it was quite probable that the significance of the route taken from St John’s to Leek Wootton was unappreciated by the majority of spectators and, he thought, all the participants. In early 1869, Edward Langley Fardon of Kenilworth rode the route on his newly constructed bicycle, the world’s first with three major innovations; an all metal construction, wheels with spokes held in tension and rubber tyres.

Having chosen the road to Leek Wootton upon which to test his ‘Velocipede’, there were initially no problems, but as he hurtled down the hill Fardon struggled to keep control and as he gathered speed, his feet came off the pedals. He later wrote, “I was getting a little bit anxious as the machine was going at a terrible rate before I got to the bottom. There was a brake upon the rear wheel, but in my anxiety to keep straight I forgot about that.” His momentum was checked by the reverse in gradient and when he came to rest, a man came from his Leek Wootton garden and enquired, “What the devil have you got there?” Details of his return journey up the hill are not recorded and, of course, the women riders of 2016 went on to climb far higher hills than ours!

Extracted from Kenilworth Weekly News and Kenilworth People & Places, Volume 1 by Robin D Leach

You may have seen the ‘portrait bench’ [below], which was unveiled in 2013 on the newly opened route from Kenilworth to Warwick University, depicting Warwickshire residents Helen Martin, donor to the university, Edward Langley Fardon and John Kemp Starley, credited with being the inventor of the modern bicycle.

This year the OVO Energy Women’s Tour returns to Warwickshire on Thursday, 13 June. Starting in Market Square, Warwick, the riders will travel through Guy’s Cliffe and Leek Wootton on their way to Kenilworth - perhaps we’ll get more of a chance to see them, because they will also be riding uphill through Leek Wootton. (see page 36)

So this year’s Summer Fête will be a celebration of cycling, with a Best Decorated Bike competition and, we hope, other bicycle-themed stalls and activities.

Last year, to celebrate our 150th anniversary, we invited the community clubs and societies to enter a display depicting their group. We were so impressed with the entries that we would like to do the same again this year. More details will follow in next month’s Link edition.

The photographic categories are ORANGE and SILHOUETTE if you have any pictures you would like to enter.

GARDENING TIPS taken from Tips from the Old Gardeners by Duncan Crosbie

If you have nettles in the garden, rather than throwing them away, add them to a container of rainwater and let them soak for a month. Then dilute with more rainwater in a ratio of 1:10 and use as a liquid fertiliser on your plants. They are full of nitrogen, phosphate and iron that you will be returning to the soil.

LEEK WOOTTON HISTORY GROUP Chairman : Paul Eldridge t : 854347

The Way We Were... The History Group’s archive has many interesting artefacts, including this one [right], which is the last Parish Garden Party before World War II (80 years ago).

Held in the grounds of Wootton Court (now The Hayes/The Warwickshire Golf & Country Club), at the invitation of the Wright family, it includes attractions such as a paddling pool, boats (on the lake) and “Coypu on view”. The Wright family had a fur farm

in Canada, where the coypu were imported from. [A coypu is a beaver-type rodent, once bred for its fur.]

After the War, the Fête returned.

In 1949 it was held at Woodcote as we have a film from this year [left is pictured The Rev Ryecart, in the white jacket, watching his wife, Verena, take aim in the shooting competition].

From the 1950s to 1970s Wootton Court was a regular venue for the Fête, and boating on the lake a popular attraction

[photo right is from the 1950s] and the occasional celebrity even attended; left is Thelma Barlow who played Peggy Archer in popular radio soap, The Archers.

Other home venues over the years have included Wootton Paddox, Leek Wootton House and, as many will remember, the beautiful gardens of The Stone House, at the invitation of Audrey and Barry Gillitt, until 2015.

Jamboree Update Less than 100 days to go, and so exciting!

Fundraising last month was a car wash at St Francis; thanks to Rev Jim for coming and wielding a sponge. We took a magnificent £600. I also attended a Lions Event to receive a very generous cheque on behalf of the participants, so do please support the Lions’ show and 2 Castles Run. You will see lots of Explorer Scouts helping out. Last effort today is the Tuck Shop at District Camp where Leek Wootton is well represented.

I however, am off for more training at Gilwell at the All Adults Weekend. Here will be not just Unit leaders like myself, who accompany the young people, but all the International Service Team who run the activities, ensure the shops are stocked with food and back up the leaders.

We now have our travel plans and the 2 units are going out at different times and to different parts of Canada for Hosted Hospitality at the end. Personally I am going to Nova Scotia, via New York, the Jamboree and Washington. Fingers crossed for a visit to the White House.

We are already planning the Post Jamboree event when we relive the experience and put together a presentation for all our parents and supporters. I will try and advertise this in the July edition so watch this space.

However I am sure you will be excited to know that this isn’t your last opportunity to support an International Scouting event. David and some friends in the Leek Wootton Football team are all Explorer Scouts and off to EuroJam in Poland in July 2020. There will be plenty of cake sales and quizzes coming up to enliven your social life!

ECO CHURCH

Two events coming up to help inform and lobby for action on limiting climate chaos:

Saturday, 22 June

The Climate Action Day - Stratford Come to Stratford Methodist Church on 22 June, between 10:00am and 4:00pm for a climate action day. This event has been organised by representatives of the Methodist Eco Church, Stratford Friends of the Earth, and the Stratford Quakers, in response to the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published in October, which made clear just how urgent it now is that we take rapid and wide-reaching action to reduce our carbon usage. The event aims to inform people about this need, and about the resources available for us in trying to make these transitions, both as individuals and as a community.

There will be an all-day exhibition, with stalls provided by around 40 campaign groups, charities, and eco-businesses. A keynote speech will be delivered at 11:00am by Dr Lisa Schipper, of the Oxford Environmental Change Institute, who is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). There will also be workshops in the afternoon focused on changes at the level of individual and community life.

Further details will be available nearer the time.

Stratford Methodist Church is active in environmental campaigning within and outside of the churches. The church building has been modified to reduce its carbon usage, through the introduction of solar panels, ground heat energy,

and rainwater flushing toilets.

Wednesday, 26 June

News from Christian Aid As Christians, we seek to put our faith into action by

loving and caring for our neighbours and the Earth, our common home. And right now, both are threatened from the impact of climate change.

Urgent action is needed to save God’s creation as we know it. Will you join the mass lobby in Westminster, London on 26 June 2019 and tell MPs that it’s time to act on climate change?

Climate change is devastating the world’s poorest communities right now, as

Student strike in Stratford, 15 Feb 2019

more extreme weather events, from flooding to droughts, drive families from their homes and create food crises.

Whether it’s women like Aster in Ethiopia who struggle to feed their children when the rains don’t come and crops burn on the stalk, or fisherfolk like Lope in the Philippines battling to make a living as climate change brings super typhoons and extreme heat, or pastoralists like Boru whose camels are weak from drought.

Climate change is hitting the poorest hardest, right now!

Will you join the mass lobby for climate and environmental action in Westminster on 26 June?

We know what we need to do to reverse the trend of climate change and protect people like Aster, Lope and Boru: we need to cut global greenhouse emissions to net zero. The existing UK Government targets don’t go far enough – we need to get to net zero by 2045 to make a difference.

On 26 June, we’ll come together in London to celebrate our faith in action, lobby our political representatives, pray together and energise one another for the challenges to come.

Will you be there?

Representatives from each year group have a ‘Pupil Voice’. They gather concerns, ideas and areas that they want to work together to improve. Currently they are trying to encourage children who have a birthday to bring in a small gift for children in their class rather than a huge bag of sweets.

In the past they have worked together to spend Sainsbury Vouchers to ensure that the play equipment meets the needs of all the children in the school rather than just a few and in this way they understand practically what a fully inclusive school looks like.

OVO ENERGY WOMEN’S TOUR Thursday, 13 June at 10:30

This year the OVO Energy Women’s Tour returns to Warwickshire on Thursday, 13 June, but this year will be a little different to the last 3 years. The race’s ‘neutralised’ start is from Market Square in Warwick at 10:30am.

Whilst the timetable says “Warwick Road, Leek Wootton” is the venue for the ’Start Proper’ of the race at 10:45, the race map shows 0KM at the junction of Warwick Road with Newey Drive on the way into Kenilworth. Wherever the start proper actually is (!), hopefully we will get a chance to see more of the cyclists as they travel through the parish in the opposite direction.

Please come out and support the riders and give them a great send-off!

Please remember to make alternative arrangements for travelling on these two days and tell others who may have to be visiting during these times. The organisers of these events are grateful for residents’ patience every year.

PLEASE REMEMBER, WE ARE AFFECTED BY TWO ROAD CLOSURE SPORTING EVENTS IN JUNE:
