Forum & Sunday Services...

Feb.

Feb.

11:15 Service: "To Be Living Now” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

The holiday of Imbolc, or Candlemas, celebrates the beginning of a new farming season. The Buddhist tradition would remind us that each new season, and each new day, comes with poten-tial opportunities for either suffering, or serenity. This meditative service offers an invitation to let go of our destructive passions, to be able to embrace time from a clear and centered awareness, so as to live with integrity, compassion, and tranquility. The Bell Choir will offer a sound medita-tion, and the offering will support the community garden operated by Congregation Kol Ami.

10:00 Forum: “Empowering African Communities with Solar Energy” Mark Hannifan

Mark is President of Sun Partners International, a KC based not-profit that helps implement community solar electrification projects in developing countries. He will discuss the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on Africa & how SPI's projects provide clean water, refrigeration, lighting and communication to impoverished villages.

Feb. 2

11:15 Service: “The Conspiracy of Trees” Rev. Kendyl Gibbons

February sometimes seems like the most endless segment of winter, but in reality there is much going on beneath the frozen surface. Ancient pagan tradition celebrated the holiday of Imbolc, the start of the lambing season and new milk. Judaism recognizes the Birthday of the Trees, and Christianity honors Candlemas, beginning the approach of Lent and Easter. What wisdom might the leafless trees have for us, as we confront the devastation of our planet? The choir will sing, and the offering will support the community garden operated by Congregation Kol Ami.

10:00 Forum: “Oscar Sunday” All Souls Movie Group

Members of the All Souls Movie group resume the annual Oscar forum. Robert Butler isn't available, but members of the All Souls Movie group have knowledge of and passion for movies. They will share insights and give the audience opportunities to vote for Oscar nominat-ed actors and films, anticipating Sunday night's awards ceremony.

10:00 Forum: “The Long Kurdish Struggle” Gary Hobin Kurds are a distinct ethnic group with unique language and culture. Their homeland is the mountainous region that borders Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria. Gary Hobin (cv US Army) will discuss the complexity and simplicity of the Kurds story, investigating who they are, what they believe, and their views of their place in the region.

11:15 Service: “Universal Love” Anthony Edwards & Rev. Judith Cady

Love is a powerful, universal force in our lives. How can we choose to share that love with others among us who need our proactive love and support at this time? Our children have decorated valentines to share a message of love with you. The adult and children’s choirs will sing and the Offering will go to support Music and Religious Education.

SEMINAR & DISCUSSION

Have you ever been asked to say grace before a meal with your

extended family? Or to lead an invocation at a public meeting, or

give a blessing for an event? Public prayer can be an ordeal, or an

opportunity, depending on how you frame it for yourself and

others. Being a Humanist, or skeptic, or naturalist, does not mean

you can't bring a message of insight and values to the larger or

smaller communities you belong to. And, you can say No gracefully

if that is your preference. Want to learn more?

Join Rev. Gibbons, Rev. Cady, and some of our young people on

Sunday afternoon, February 9, for a sem inar and discus-

sion on how to respond from a UU perspective to requests for pray-

er. We will talk about various situations, look at some examples,

and do some personal reflection and creative work. The gathering

begins at 2:30 PM, and we will end around 4:00 PM. Sign

up on the clipboard under the bulletin board in the hallway by the

kitchen, or let Rev. Cady know that you plan to attend.

One of the common wisdom sayings I remember from my childhood is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This still seems to me true on many levels, and lately I have been thinking of it in terms of

popular delusions and the madness of crowds. (By the way, if you have never read the book of this title, by Charles MacKay, right now would be an excellent time!) All of us are less vulnerable to lies that we have heard before and come to recognize for what they are. All of us are less likely to be infected with preju-dice against types of people we already know and like. All of us are more likely to behave rationally in

regard to facts and ideas that we are familiar with. This is why education is the key to civilization -- we all need to be inoculated against deceit, bigotry, and misinformation by exposure to reality and truth. And we are always only one ignorant generation away from the tyranny of superstition, credulity, and fear.

We must be life-long learners, taking in as much accurate information as possible, but there are many kinds of learning. In addition to

facts, we must learn to know people, both as individuals, and as members of communities beyond our own. There are, of course, many additional types of learning; this is the one I am thinking about at the moment. The reality is that the more friends and connections we have within a particular group, the less likely we are to accept stereotypes or popular prejudices about that group. It is far easier to

get to know other people before conflict arises than it is to pick up the pieces after a damaging confrontation, or to un-learn unconscious ideas that filled the vacuum of ignorance.

I feel fortunate that All Souls has for years shared our space with wonderful tenant/neighbors from Congregation Kol Ami. I have learned a great deal from many of them, especially my colleague, Rabbi Doug Alpert. Like any deep religious heritage, Judaism reveals

new facets of wisdom the more I learn about it, as I am exposed to this community of practice. And as our 21st century American culture flirts with dangerous currents of a newly virulent anti-semitism, I am persuaded that one of the best forms of resistance to this infectious virus is knowledge -- both of the tradition, and of the people.

As do our traditions of Judaism and Unitarian Universalism, Rabbi Alpert and I share commitments to many issues of social justice, including the environment and global climate change. One of the places this is expressed in the Jewish tradition is the celebration of

Tu B’shavat, the birthday of the trees. Much like race horses, which are all deemed one year older on the same day regardless of when they were actually born, trees in ancient Israel all became a year older in the dormant season of late winter. Today this holiday honors the blessings of the earth and the responsibility of human stewardship.

Members of All Souls are invited to join with Congregation Kol Ami for Friday evening sabbath worship on February 7, at 6:45 P.M.,

looking ahead to Tu B’shavat on February 9/10. We will help to host the Oneg Shabbat celebration that evening by sharing foods such as tree nuts and tree fruits. And in honor of our shared commitment to care for the earth, our special offering on Sunday, February 2 and 9, will help support the Kol Ami urban community garden project in our neighborhood, at 42nd and Forrest Avenue.

We weave these connections with the people and the communities who are our neighbors, so that when times become troubled, we know one another, and are there for each other. This web cannot be manufactured out of hand when it is needed most; it must be constructed strand by strand, over time, with intention and compassion. Now is the moment to build these relationships of mutual awareness and care, so that they may sustain us in the hours when our deepest values are at risk.

Hatred and oppression thrive in ignorance and separation -- help stop them before they get started. The most radical thing we can all

do is to connect. Please join us.

Notes from RE Teachers, RE Board & Schedule...

Rev. Judith Cady

The Religious Education Board Meets The Second Sunday of Each Month Anyone is welcome to attend.

Children & Youth Sunday Morning Schedule 10:00—12:15 Nursery service is provided for babies and toddlers. 10:00—11:00 A time of creativity, conversation, and community for all ages. 10:00—10:30 Children’s Choir, grades 1-6 lower level. 11:15—12:15 Sunday School classes for all ages to explore our Unitarian Universalist faith and principles through storytelling, discussion, creative experiences, and service projects.

Notes from a

Religious Education Teacher

I have been working with the teens for over 7 years. I love meeting with the teen group on Sundays because, even though I'm further away from being a teenager than I used to be, I still remember what that time of life was like. And I enjoy talking to them about their experiences, their dreams, their interests, and

what concerns them about the world. Our teen group is always such a great, kind, and fun group. And they are all so different from one anoth-er! I'm so grateful for the chance to interact with the people who are go-ing to make such a difference in the world, even if they don't yet know it. It also doesn't hurt that they keep me up to date on new social media, lingo, and trends in the world that would, otherwise, fly over my head. I'm looking forward to continuing our "hang outs" and hope they will keep letting me join them on Sunday mornings.

Notes from a

Religious Education Teacher

I have been serving the teen class for over a year. I am always happy to see how eager they are to have their voice heard and to share their own knowledge with me. By giving them an open platform and a comfortable environment to use, they have an opportunity to work as a team to not only identify conflicts in our world, but also constructive ways to solve them. I feel this is the start to making our world better. They have also taught me how contagious this positivity can be!

Facilities Committee Notice...

Notes from the Facilities Committee

During the renovation project of 2017 – 2018, our church made major, fundamental advances in our heating technology, but it hasn’t been without a few growing pains along the way.

At some point after the addition of the Winn wing in 1963, a very prudent decision was made to divide each of the two structures, the original building and the Winn wing, into several discrete HVAC zones. This was done because the areas and patterns of use and occupancy during the week are very different than those on the weekends. Obviously it’s costly and wasteful to heat and cool unoccupied space. The zone approach is a very appropriate response to the need for a flexible HVAC system.

For years we’ve maintained several furnaces for each of the two sections of the church structure. Each furnace had its own natural gas pipe system, fan, Plenum chamber, gas burner manifold and exhaust system for the byproducts of combustion. Those aging furnaces are all gone now, each replaced by a device called an Air Handling Unit, or AHU.

An AHU has no combustion section, no burners, no gas pipes and no exhaust system. Gas combustion still occurs, but in only one place in the entire system and on a very reduced scale. A boiler, about the size of a large commercial refrigerator, heats water which is then pumped around the system to the AHUs, where the internal fans move air across the pipes and coils which circulate the hot water through the AHU. From there, the fans propel the heated air through conventional duct work to the areas where it’s needed. The new system is much simpler, safer and more efficient and economical than the old system. It should substantially reduce our expenses and our carbon footprint in the long term.

This is proven technology, available for decades, and the renovation was a great opportunity for us to adopt it. We purchased equipment made by established, quality manufacturers; with the advice and guidance of the architectural firm, we retained to help us with the renovation project. We have, however, experienced more than the expected difficulties in keeping the system running reliably. We’ve assembled a task group, consisting of Lamar Hicks and Jane Wilson, who were active members of the Renovation Task Force; and Chuck Downing, Butch Murphy and me, members of the Facilities Committee. Diane Cassity, also on the task group, is both a member of the former Task Force and the present Facilities Committee. We’re also getting input from Charles Dickinson, our facilities manager. The task group is presently engaged in meetings with the maintenance company we retained, to get to the root of the problem. Initial discussions point to a combination of unfortunate equipment failures and possible installation issues.

We’ll get to the bottom of the problem and we’ll keep you informed.

We are restructuring Trivia Night and it will return next fall with a new twist, a curry cook off. If you are interested in helping, let us know. We are especially looking for help with the curry cook-off. And don't worry, we aren't looking for anything as extravagant as the chili cook-off. The Trivia will still be the focus of the evening.

If interested email Andrea Jonson at [email protected]. We'll start planning in late summer for a Fall event.

Waking the Ally Within

4-session anti-racism small groups start in Spring 2020. Sign up in the lobby or contact Anna Sajovic [email protected].

Allies are people who make intentional choices to work for the rights of those from oppressed groups of which they are not a part. Allies are committed to eliminating some form of oppression from which they benefit.

Green Sanctuary Committee...

SUSTAINABLE LIVING TIPS

From the Green Sanctuary Committee

Consider the impact on the environment when purchasing flowers, cards,

chocolate, and wine for Valentine’s Day and other occasions. Seventy-eight

percent of the cut flowers sold in the U.S. are produced in Ecuador and

Columbia, where they are heavily doused with fungicides, insecticides and

herbicides. They are then stored in refrigerated areas and sent to the U.S.

on planes adding to greenhouse gas production. In the weeks before

Valentine’s Day, additional air shipping routes are added because of

increased demand.

After the flowers wilt, they are sent to landfills where they decay, releas-

ing methane gas. Chocolate and coffee production are major contributors to

deforestation. The cutting of trees releases carbon and clear cutting causes

erosion and water pollution. Wine production can also have a major impact

on the environment when produced using large amounts of chemicals. Many

wines are also shipped long distances. Look for wines produced in Missouri

or Kansas and chocolate and coffee that are both

certified organic and fair trade. If sending greeting

cards consider e-cards or those on recycled paper.

Register to Vote, Rick Caplan Art Exhibit…

NEED TO REGISTER TO VOTE

and/or UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS?

Avoid those long lines at the Kansas City Election Board, Jackson County Election Board and

Union Station by stopping by your friendly All Souls Church Administrator's office to register to vote

and/or update your address. Please keep in mind you must be a citizen of the United States of America

and 18 years of age on or before election day to vote. Le Aúndra Salazar-Slaughter would gladly assist

you Tuesday — Friday, and Sunday in order for you to easily avoid rush hour traffic, pick up the kids

from school/babysitter, and continue with your day and she’ll deliver or mail the application on your

behalf. So make sure your voice is heard by registering to vote today.

January Artist | Rick Caplan

My interest in art is the consequence of being bored in high school. Instead of paying attention to the teacher, I doodled on my desk, in my textbooks, and on the shirt or blouse of the person sitting in front of me. Quizzes and tests were turned in with oddball characters drawn in the spaces where the answers should be. I can still remember my English teacher, Miss Agnes Tuttlemeyer, yelling, “Richard Caplan! Can’t you, at least, pretend you are interested in what goes on in class?” “Miss Tuttlemeyer,” I coolly replied, “first of all, only my mother is allowed to call me Richard. Second, would it not be easier for both of us if it were you who pretended I was interested?” If I recall, the next week was spent

after school in detention.

Art of all forms—drawing, painting,

photography—are my way of relaxing, express-

ing myself, and sometimes, making a social-justice statement. In addition to art, I am also trying my hand at writing. My self-published

books, found on Amazon and Kindle, include: The Discarded,” a comical, action-adventure novel; “Cupcakes and Poison,” a collec-

tion of fun and thought-provoking Haiku; and “Silence of the Lamb Chops, The Poetry of Petre Zorne.” Before retiring and seriously

enjoying art and writing, I practiced social-entrepreneurship, helping to create Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores, The Surplus

Exchange, and BooksKC—all, organizations with an environmental slant providing jobs and job training for individuals with disabilities.

New Members, Board Parking Accessibility Group Notice...

Let’s give a warm weLcome to our New members

Victor Aguilar

Derek Frischer

Ashanti Spears

(60 - 5 - 7)/331 = ???

Who liked story problems in school? Or, did you feel like they were like this: If Jack has 5 apples and Le Aúndra has 3 Bundt cakes

and they take a train going from Kansas City to St. Louis that is travelling at 80 miles an hour, how many antelopes will appear on

February 2nd to tell us if we have 4 more weeks until we can go play Frisbee golf?

Here’s one for you that hopefully makes more sense - we have 60 parking spaces in our too-small lot. 5 spaces are reserved

(2 for our ministers, 2 for visitors, and 1 for the parking raffle winner), and another 7 are designated as accessible parking. That

leaves 48 spaces for everyone else to try and use on Sunday mornings. How many people can park in those spots? How many

people turn around and went home? How many people don’t even try to come to church? How many visitors never come in

because they couldn’t find a spot?

The Board is taking a look at this issue as part of our mission of building a respectful and caring community and creating change

toward a just and compassionate society. It also relates to several of our Principles, including the First, Second, Sixth & Seventh.

We had a table in the lobby during mid to late January for people to ask questions and start conversations, and held a Church Chat

on January 26th.

Here’s one suggestion to make the math easier - if every member who is currently able-bodied and doesn’t have young

(toddler-aged) children, looked further afield for parking (hint, parking on the streets around the church) and/or looked up other

members in their neighborhoods to form carpool groups, there’d be a lot more parking spaces available for those visitors,

members with young children and members with mobility issues to use. We’d get a chance to see more folks at church on a

regular basis, and maybe even see more new folks to get to know.

We’d love to hear from you about other ideas for making it easier for people to come to church - if you have ideas or just want to

learn more about the issue, come join us at the Church Chat or contact me, Scott England, at [email protected].

PeaceWorks to raffle off quilt at Annual Meeting

March 1, 2020

PeaceWorks-KC began in 1982 with three men from All Souls, and we’re taking this

opportunity to thank All Souls for its brave spirit! We extend a warm invitation to you: come to

PeaceWorks’ Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 1, 2-4 pm, at Simpson House.

JOIN US for food, fellowship, and a short play, “Putting Nukes on Trial in KC,” performed by

some of the 15 persons arrested and convicted of crossing the line at KC’s nuclear weapon

parts plant last year. We will give awards to an individual and a group fostering peace. You

may recall that our 2019 UNplaza Art Fair was partly rained out. To boost our bottom line, we

will raffle off a stunning 74” x 74” custom-made quilt. For raffle tickets--$5 per ticket or $10 for

three tickets—contact me, Henry, [email protected].

As nuclear weapons, wars, and military conflicts expand, along with the increasingly

devastating climate catastrophe, we need to share time to celebrate our successes, support

each other, and plan for a better future.

Warming Center

Planning Continues

Members of the All Souls Warming Center Committee are preparing to open the church's doors when the temperature dips to ten degrees Fahrenheit or below. This endeavor will require six volunteers per 4-5 hour shift through the night.

More volunteers are needed! Look for a member of the committee in the lobby on Sunday mornings to ask questions or indicate your interest, and drop in to an orientation after the service so you'll be ready to volunteer.

Now is also a good time to set aside warm gloves, coats, jackets, hats, and scarves. When we activate the warming center, we'll be asking for you to bring those to All Souls so we can give them away.
