18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year “C” “Vanity of Vanities … All Things Are Vanity”
One day after I became president, writes Nelson Mandela, former presi-dent of South Africa. I asked some members of my close protection to stroll with me in the city to have lunch at one of its restaurants. We sat in one of the downtown restaurants and ordered our choice of food... After a while, the waiter brought us our food, I noticed that there is someone sitting in front of my table waiting for food. I told one of the soldiers: Go and ask that person to join us with his food and eat with us. The soldier went and asked the man to join us at table. The man brought up his food and sat by my side and began to eat. His hands were trem-bling constantly until everyone had finished their food and then the man left. A soldier said to me: the man was apparently quite sick. His hands trem-bled as he ate!! "No, not at all," said Mandela. "This man was the guard of the prison where I was jailed. Often, after the torture I was subjected to, I used to scream and ask for a little water. The very same man used to come every time and urinate on my head instead"...; So I found him scared, trembling, expecting me to reciprocate now, at least in the same way, either by torturing him or imprisoning him as I am now the Presi-dent of the State of South Africa… But this is neither in my character nor part of my ethics. The mentality of retaliation destroys states while the mentality of tolerance builds Na-tions.” No condition is ever permanent. Kingdoms rise and fall, hence it is better to be kind to those we meet on our way up because we may meet them again on our way down. Solomon in all his wisdom, wealth and prosperity, sees the brokenness of the material world, power and authority. He sees his own folly and shame, the bitterness of his disappointment, after getting to the top of the mountain; he sees that there is nothing there. Now, he sees the need to return to the fountain of living water – God. To those who heed to this warning and begin to live, he invites them to warn others not to cling to the world and die in vain. It’s all vanity after all. “Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity! For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This is also vanity.”
However, in reference to the true desire of our souls, material things are unquestionably vain because they are not what they seem to be and do not bring about what they promise. Hence, we labor in vain if we work only for the material things of this world. If this world in its present state is our hope for living, life would not be worth living. Having enough of the wealth and treasure of this world cannot bring us genuine happiness. All we get from the world are the wants of the soul which cannot atone for the sins of the soul and would instead lead to the loss of it. The treasures of this world count for noth-ing in the face of death, judgment and everlasting life. It is true that God makes nothing in vain. God’s creation is purposeful and meaningful but our life is vain whenever we put the things of this world in the place of God in our lives. The world as we know it is not an end in itself but a means to an end. This world is a place of self realiza-tion and self emancipation. We are in this world to work for the salvation of our souls. Our life is in vain should we attempt to use or see the ma-terial world as an end in itself. In today’s Gospel Jesus confronts head on the principal cause of vanity, which is greed. It is interesting to note that the brothers in the gospel story, who have been blessed with earthly wealth, could not sit down to share their family wealth amicably. Worse still is the fact that his request “tell my brother to share the inheritance with me,” had nothing to do with what Jesus was saying to the crowd, which means that the brother who feels he has been cheated has not been listening to what Jesus was teaching them. His mind is only preoccupied with material possession. Hence, Jesus seizes the opportunity to teach us the importance of setting our priorities right. Material things, good though they may be, are not ends in them-selves but a means to an end which is eternal life. Material things may be necessary for us to sustain life on earth, yet, in the long run they count for nothing if we do not use them to realize the salvation of our soul. A human being is a creator of meaning. Material things are given. The use we make of them is what makes them good or bad. What works for one person may not work for you. It is better to focus on the gifts you have received from God and not be envious of the blessings of another person. In the end what counts is not how much you have received in your lifetime, but the good use you made of them. To Jesus, what counts is the conscientious use of all we have received. Jesus truly understands that we need some basic necessities to survive in life – we need food, clothing and shelter but whenever these become the main preoccupation of our lives, it poses a danger to the human soul. It goes to mean then that in the scheme of things everything counts and God expects an account of everything we have received in life. Material things may enhance the joy of the children of God, yet, it is important to understand that Christian joy does not depend on material things. The Spirit longs for higher values – union with the Divine who is the source of justice, beauty, truth and goodness. Hence, the Bible opines, “seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and every other thing will be added unto you.”

Parents have a responsibility to report concerns they have about another person’s behaviors or ac ons that could put their children — or any children — at risk. These concerns are any-thing that makes the parent uneasy or uncomfortable, or any-thing that a child reports made them feel uneasy or uncomfort-able. Some examples of seemingly li le things that can be worth repor ng include: A teacher covering her glass classroom door with artwork, elimina ng the ability to see into the classroom from the hall; a youth ministry icebreaker ac vity, where teens have to pass a mint candy from person to person using only toothpicks in their mouth, despite the discomfort of some par-

LET US KEEP OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN OUR PRAYERS
We must love them both—those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject. For both have labored in the search for truth, and both
have helped us in the finding of it. ~ Thomas Aquino

USANDO NUESTRO TIEMPO SABIAMENTE
