Botanical BonanzaIt’s Easy To Bring Nature InsideBy KORKY VANN | Courant Staff Writer
Expect to see a bumper crop of botanical design elements this fall.
That’s the word from design experts who say floral, bird, plant and leaf patterns are showing up on everything from drapery fabrics and doormats to dinnerware and drawer pulls. But these graphics are no shrinking violets.
This time around, nature’s gone bold, says Jan Jessop, spokeswoman for Calico Corners, a custom-decorating business.
“Ever since the Dutch painters and botanic illustrators exhibited portraits of exotic flowers in the 17th and 18th century, people have wanted to incorporate images of natural beauty in their homes, and this season, the influence of botany has never been stronger,” says Jessop. “The difference is now we’re seeing traditional patterns in fresh, bright colors and classic elements reinterpreted in unexpected ways.”
Key to the current look is color — think bright aqua, chrome yellow, kiwi green. Motifs range from realistic renderings to graphic flower power to striking silhouettes. One of the most striking changes is scale — the bigger, the better.
“These large-scale patterns can boost a room’s personality,” Jessop says. “They’re much more assertive than florals we’ve seen in the past and work well in casual, traditional or contemporary settings.”
And they’re spreading like kudzu.
Anne Martin, spokeswoman for the Wallcoverings Association, says wallpaper designers are falling for leaves this season. Popular designs include large-scale graphics in vivid colors and patterns shimmered with gold, silver or pearlescent detail.
The focus of Target’s new John Derian Collection — which includes wall art, shadowboxes, trays and vases — is the artist’s whimsical interpretation of nature’s butterflies, birds, vegetables, flowers and insects.
Anthropologie’s fall home collection includes the Jade Forest chandelier, a leafy canopy of jeweled leaves and hand-painted birds. Pottery Barn’s new organic bedding line features Tatum, an Art Nouveau poppy-print pattern in shades of robin’s egg blue, coral and cocoa. Crate & Barrel’s Arida place mats showcase bold green and brown leaves embroidered on black poplin.
Experts recommend incorporating the trendy naturals wherever your home needs a shot of interest or punch of color.
“The more high-tech our world becomes, the more we crave the calming effect of nature in our home,” Jessop says. “These patterns, as vivid as they are, are part of our visual vocabulary. They act as grounding elements and provide us with a sense of balance.”
