Pet Therapy!
DEAR FRIENDS: (Holiday card sparks memories for an Allendale Alum!)“Your [holiday] card with the children on their sleds reminded me of December 7, 1941 at Allendale. It was a Sunday, so after chapel we had the day free. I did have some chores because I was a farm boy under Mr. Hunt. His wife was in charge of the new Hospital we had just built. Anyway…we had fresh snow that day and a nice big hill out in back of the barn. We had also cut down some trees a few months back and left the stumps about 8 inches from the ground. The snow covered the stumps so when we went down, with some of us 3 deep, we never knew when we could come to an abrupt stop. What fun we had! Later in the afternoon we went inside the main cottage for hot chocolate. My memory leaves me now -- I can’t remember the name of that main cottage, but the office was there. The radio was on telling all about the attack on Pearl Harbor…two years later, I was at the submarine base in Groton, training to be a radioman on a sub in the Pacific.
[While at Allendale] I was a Shelter [cottage] boy, but they were building a new Shelter [cottage] so I was sent to Virginia [cottage]. My nickname was ‘Wormy’ because I loved

are tranforming kids’ lives’-Excerpts from an article featured in the Daily Herald on 1/10/18
Today, having overcome depression, anxiety and an ulcer at the age of 14, Leyda is a cum luade student at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. She’s also the newly-adopted member of the Greenawalt family, who began fostering her through our Specialized Foster Care program in 2013.
“We had raised our children,” Janice Greenawalt said. “As empty-nesters, we weren’t done. We felt we could support a child whose family was strug-gling and in crisis.”
“There is a desperate need for families who are willing and able to open their homes and hearts to children -- children entering the system with more acute, complex needs,” said Jason Keeler, Allendale President.

to read (and still do). During the war, I was on Midway Island for “rest camp” and I heard a voice in the rear say, “Hey Wormy”. It was Swede Johnson from Bellerose [cottage, Allendale]. I saw him again before the war was over.”

Allendale Students Take on Challenges!
Recently, one of our classes visited North Wall Climbing Gym in Crystal Lake to tackle physical challenges through team work. After reviewing the rules, procedures, and protocol for rock climbing, the owner presented the class with their first challenge of traversing one side of the climbing gym.
Soon after the class experienced additional physical challenges such as climbing up the rope, climbing up to the top of climbing routes as high as 26 feet, and slack lining (an activity in which a person attempts to walk across a rope balancing their body weight without using their hands).
POETIC JUSTICE -- Hear our VoicesDuring this past summer, Ms. Renita’s class participated in a poetry perfor-mance class sometimes known as “Power Poetry” or “Slam Poetry”. During this class, the students began using personal experiences to tell their life story through poetry. They began analyzing, writing and performing in front of each other before ending the summer class with a performance at Starbucks. When the fall semester started, they began “Creative Writing” by working on a poetry anthol-ogy. As the girls continued to write, op-portunities for open mic presented itself allowing them the platform to share their work.
We grow and grow and grow and our
future becomes our present
Leaving our past without the worry
of being judged
Pushing past to be accepted for
who we are
Forever pursuing the people
we want to be…….
A million poems could never express
the desire we have to be more
More than what they think I am
More than what they think I am
capable of being
More than what I present myself to be
Finally discovering how to be more
…….Me.
-written by students in Ms. Renita’s class
WHO WE ARE
Throughout the time spent at the North Wall, the class practiced trusting one another and their harnesses to keep them safe while working towards and finishing numerous physical challenges. Everyone was exhausted after climbing for two hours, but the day was finished off with a trip to Portillo’s for lunch and gratification of a fun collaborative workout!
Out of this, the group Poetic Justice arose using Creative Writing for all to “Hear Their Voices”! (Read their group poem, to the right!)
