A bientôt à l’Alliance française !

Dear friends of Alliance française,
After a short regenerative break, opportune for renewing ideas, let’s celebrate this new year together with a rich and eclectic cultural program.
We will be starting with two high-quality exhibitions, including one by Ania Gruca, a French portrait photographer, regularly in Zanzibar since 2010. A work revolving on the current social, cultural, economical and political aspects of the Archipelago. Already published in international press such as The New York Times, The Citizen, Der Standard, she will honour us with her presence in Dar es Salaam in February.
The Alliance française, being a place for exchanges and sharing experiences, will develop more debates of ideas this year. Four national and international experts will come in February to share their thoughts – in collaboration with the French Embassy - and challenge the audience regarding Climate change.
The Francophony and Madagascar will be honored with the exceptional presence of the Mpamanga band on the Alliance française stage, originally from the « red island », also scheduled at Sauti za Busara Festival.
For the lauching of the « Cercle Franco-Tanzanien » - a Franco-Tanzanian Friendship Group -, the concert of Sophie Delmas, prestigious Star of Mamma Mia will be a fantastic experience not to be missed. Definitely one of early 2015's major events.
Please feel free to visit our website www.afdar.com. You will find detailed information regarding the next French courses session which will start on January 10th.
We wish you a wonderful year 2015. See you soon at Alliance française !

2 Days in Paris(France)

Ingenue Julie Delpy does triple duty as writer, director, and star of this romantic comedy. French photographer Marion (Delpy) and American interior designer Jack (Adam Goldberg) are returning from a vacation in Venice. Despite the fact that it was supposed to be the ultimate romantic getaway, disagreements and misunderstandings seemed to drive them farther apart rather than bringing them closer together. Before they return to the United States, Marion and Jack have a quick two-day stop in Paris to visit Marion’s parents and pick up the cat that they had been pet-setting for their daughter. Unfortunately for Jack, Paris proves to be quite a culture shock. Not only are Marion’s parents a pair of eccentric former “revolutionaries” who make no qualms about having knock-down-drag-out arguments regardless of who’s present, but they also appear to have a particular distaste for Americans. He realizes he doesn't know his girlfriend half as well as he thought he did when they were living the simple life back in New York.

Layered Realities: Photos of Coastal Tanzania
By Tom Sullam
6.30pmExhibition Hall
ENTRANCE FREE
‘Layered Realities’ presents a series of striking impressionistic images that capture the colours, textures, materials and immensity of Tanzania, as experienced by the London-based photographer Tom Sullam. Faced with the challenge of capturing the abundance and variety of visual stimuli within a single image, Tom layered a number of scenes together to create an intricate narrative within each one. The results are pictures that are instantly appealing. Shadows, reflections and textures are all used along with more traditional photographic subjects to create a visual journey.
Toms' pictures of the most expensive houses in the world appear regularly in publications such as Architectural Digest and The Financial Times.
Tom is a past winner of the Fuji Photographer of the Year competition and sits on the judging panel of the UK’s Landscape Photographer of the Year award.

Abdel Kechiche’s La Graine et le Mulet hones in on one community, located on the ocean, which exudes a laid-back, unforced rhythm and a slower pace of life for all of its residents. For many years, one such occupant, sexagenarian Slimane Beiji (Habib Boufares), has nurtured a single lifelong dream: to open up his own couscous and fish restaurant in the community. This dream appears ever more impossible when Slimane is promptly laid off, but he soon lands on the idea of occupying a wrecked boat and converting it into the restaurant. Meanwhile, the gentleman has recently divorced his wife, Souad (Bouraouia Marzouk), and has moved into a hotel owned by his lover, Latifa (Hatika Karaoui), but Slimane’s extended family continues to meet at Souad’s home on a weekly basis for her beloved fish couscous, where they expostulate their views on life and reflect on the state of their relationships with one another endangering the sanctity and happiness of his family.

ZanzibarA Tale Beyond Fiction
by Ania Gruca (France)
6.30pmExhibition Hall
ENTRANCE FREE
The name ‘Zanzibar’ conjures up a certain image in the public imagination – spices, romance, mysticism, exoticism – but it’s also a “social laboratory,” in the words of former vice president Omar Ali Juma. This small territory, situated off the coast of Tanzania with a population of just over a million, has a tumultuous history driven by waves of Arabic, Africa, Asian, Comorian and European migration and colonization. This kaleidoscopic context makes Zanzibar a unique, complex place. More recently, the archipelago has gone through many changes. In the last decade, tourism has brought new waves of travellers and sparked new trends. Global capitalism has provoked developmental changes.
Ania Gruca is a French documentary and portrait photographer based in New York. Since 2010 she has been working on an in-depth social photo documentary on the archipelago of Zanzibar. Her project ‘Zanzibar, A Tale Beyond Fiction’ saw her travelling regularly to the islands to work on the current social, cultural, economical and political aspects of Zanzibar. Her work has appeared in publications such as Der Standard, Zink Magazine, Al Hashulchan, The New York Times, The Citizen, The Jewish Week, Die Presse, The Tribeca Trib and Il Nostro Tempo.

They’ve just arrived in France. They are Irish, Serbian, Brazilian, Tunisian, Chinese, and Senegalese. During a year, Julie Bertuccelli filmed the exchanges, conflicts, and joys of this group of students aged between 11 and 15 years old who all attend the same class to learn French. In this small theater of the world, the innocence, energy, and contradictions of these adolescents are expressed. Driven by the same desire to change their lives, these students challenge many established ideas about youth and integration, and give us hope for the future.

From debate to action on Climate Change
6.00pmENTRANCE FREE
Wednesday 10th February 2015
In December 2015, Paris will host COP21. The aim of this major global event is to finally reach an agreement on climate change. All countries will be represented and France is expecting around 50 000 persons to attend the Conference.
As a milestone on the road to Paris, the French Embassy to Tanzania invites 4 experts to share their thoughts on what climate change means for Tanzania. Adaptation, mitigation, migration, development, negotiation… What are the issues at stake? What are the proposed solutions? What can reasonably be implemented? What are the remaining challenges? What do other countries actually do?
4 national and international experts will share their thoughts and challenge the audience at the Alliance française.

BILAMbwana Kibosha
Bila means “without” in Kiswahili.
This is my true family story. I used to depend on my brother for everything. I had no other support in my life. It was he who convinced me to become a dancer and taught me how to socialize.
Sadly he passed away from HIV/AIDS. “WITHOUT” him, life was hard. Protect yourself against HIV / AIDS so that yours and other people’s dreams can come true.

Mpamanga from Madagascar, have been in the game since 2009. The group includes five musicians with Zix on bass and vocals, Jacquis Ralf on guitar and vocals, Hery on drums and pad, Toky on keyboards, vocals and percussion and Bema on lead vocals. The group was born in their home town of Antsirabe. Over the years, each member has had his own parallel experiences: Jacquis Ralf as a jazz guitarist; Bema, Zix and Toky as founding members of M’boutah group, well-known nationally; and Hery for many years working as a sound engineer and drummer with various local and national artists.
Since 2009, Mpamanga firstly performed locally in Antsirabe, and were soon invited to play the music circuits of the Malagasy capital (French Institute, Circle Germano-Malagasy, Alliance Française, Jao’s Pub) and then Malagasy festivals (Angaredona 2011, 2012 and 2013; Mamahoaka 2011, 2012 and 2014; Madajazzcar 2011 and 2012; Libertalia Music Festival 2014). Each of their concerts is different, with the group constantly evolving and progressing their musical improvisation, presentation and stage skills. Mpamanga is one of those groups whose melodies stay in your head long after they have left the stage.

The film’s screenplay starts with a surprise for Ariane Felder: She’s pregnant! It’s really quite surprising because the young judge is a very straight-laced hardened bachelorette. It all gets even more surprising when a paternal test reveals that the child’s father is none other than Bob, a criminal charged for a frightful assault! Ariane, who remembers nothing, tries to understand what on earth happened and what she should be expecting…

A new flood befalls the Earth. Ferdinand- a modern-day Noah- manages to defy the elements and save some animals. Both humans and animals are involved in the swirl of adventure...
Forty days and forty nights of rain- the world has experienced a flood like this before, and now it’s happening again. Two adults and two children seek refuge in a gigantic barn- a kind of improvised ark. In this floating house, they gather together the animals from their farm and from the neighboring zoo. Unfortunately, the only food is the 28 tons of potatoes on board. While the herbivores have no complaints, there are disgruntled mutterings from the carnivores, who start to cast increasingly greedy glances at their travelling companions...
