svensson tour australia dec 2009 jan 2010

With the resonant yet fragile voice of a fallen angel, delicate and wild lyrics that flirt with disaster and despair and a Franco-British pop sound that’s working hard to reconcile Serge Gainsbourg, The Cure and Nick Cave, SvenSson has always followed his own unique muse. Two years ago SvenSson’s album ‘Perdition’ was widely acclaimed both in Australia and in France his latest release combines an unrestrained mix of electric out-pourings with moments of naked grace… In concert the young alchemist from Toulouse is joined by folk guitars, violin and ‘cellobass’. And he always gives it his all. SvenSson and his inspired band are on the road again in 2009 on the ‘Cyprine World Tour’, a much-anticipated event in Australia and France.

long term studies in france

Australian students wishing to study at a French university need apply to the French Embassy, whether currently in France or in another country. The deadline for applications for long-term study at a French uni-versity is in early January. Stu-dents graduating from Australian high schools will require their completion of high school certifi-cates, including the Victorian Cer-tificate of Education (VCE).These certificates grant access to French universities. However each university may apply addi-tional criteria such as grades ob-tained on the exam or language tests, usually the DELF (Diplôme élémentaire en langue française) Level B2 or the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) level C1.

guillaume tourniaire conductorBrilliant young French conductor Guillaume Tourniaire is currently enjoying a meteoric rise on the international conducting scene. He will record an album of ballet music by Saint-Saëns at Monash University’s Robert Blackwood Hall from February 1st-4th 2010 with Orchestra Victoria. This is Guillaume Tourniaire’s second recording with Orchestra Victoria, following their highly suc-cessful collaboration on the Saint Saëns opera, "Hélène". He has also made two recordings with the Queensland Orchestra – Mo-zart’s clarinet concerto, with Paul Dean, and "Turbulent Heart," mu-sic by Vierne and Chausson, with tenor Steve Davislim To order these CDs, go to www.melbarecordings.com.au

To order these CDs see www.melbarecordings.com.au

The second part of the project, entitled "I'm Dreaming of a French Meadow", will take place in the Abbotsford Convent's former dormitory. An installa-tion and a live concert will take place, combining Cédric's sound and field recordings and those of another In-Habit artist, Jacques Soddell. Jacques will have been collecting field recordings from the convent's 'French Meadow', a wildgrass and flowers field that can be seen from the dormitory windows. Performed within the in-stallation in the former dormitory, the live concert will bring Cédric and Jacques together as a duo, to highlight their collaborative and shared practice in field recording composition.

Since the 1990s, sound art-ist Cédric Peyronnet has been working with phonography (field recordings, sound hunting) and soundscapes, using the princi-ples of concrete, acousmatic and electro-acoustic music.

Cédric Peyronnet will be involved in a residency called In-Habit, based at the City of Yarra's Ab-botsford Convent. He will par-ticipate in a two-part project. Both of them juxtapose reverie and repression, while drawing on the idea of 'the bed' as a site for im-agined cosmos which can grow from chaos.

The first part is "One Square Me-tre", a 12 month-long exploratory investigation based at the City of Yarra's Atherton Community Gar-dens. Cédric will be composing a 12-minute CD each month based on 'data poems'. In these, he will describe the ambiance of the gar-dens between 11am and 12pm once a month. It will culminate in a collection of 12 CDs and a free public tour at the Gardens on Thursday 11th February.

Who is Uncle Albert? My name is Albert Mullet. I was part of the National Indigenous Art Board of Australia created at the end of the 1970s. Our primary goal was to pro-mote Aboriginal art, neglected by the federal authorities until then, and to then form a lobby group which would in-cite the Australian Arts Council to grant us a real financial budget each year. When I say us, I’m talking about Indige-nous arts projects. As representative of Victoria, my mission was to travel to the state’s 35 communities to establish an inventory on artistic production. Since that time, I think we’ve come a long way, but there remains a lot to be done.

For the second consecutive year, EGAAC artists will exhibit at the Alli-ance française de Melbourne as part of the St Kilda Festival. What does the Corporation represent?Based in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, it is the only Aboriginal Arts Corporation in Victoria. In the middle of the 1990s, we decided with other elders to set up this organisation so that local artists could show the range of their talents, receive support and thus preserve our culture. It has a management committee of seven people, all Aboriginal, a small administrative team and more than 130 members. Today, young people in the region are realising that through the corporation, they can lay claim to, and produce their art, whether it takes the form of painting, sculpture, music or performance.

Which community do you belong to?My ancestors are Gunai/Kurnai. “G” is the spelling closest to our pronuncia-tion. Within the scope of programs with universities in Victoria, I’ve worked a lot with young Aboriginals who didn’t know anything about their past. We try, starting with their surnames or nick-names, to identify their ancestral com-munity. All of them, or their parents and grandparents, were a part of the Sto-

len Generations. There has been so much suffering, exclusion and misun-derstanding since the British colonists arrived. Our ancestors were put onto reserves, onto “mission stations.” We must not forget.

How do you see the future of EGAAC? This is the permanent topic of discus-sion in my family, who are very involved in the corporation. Our job is to continue to fight against the negative preconcep-tions still targeting Aboriginal commu-nities: alcoolism, unemployment and violence. In Victoria on the other hand, there are extremely talented young art-ists who should be encouraged, and new leaders who are conscious of the richness of their cultures. Mentalities need to change on both sides.

In the last few years, works by some Aboriginal artists have sold for in-credible amounts at the internation-al level. What do you think of this trend? That artists can live from their art doesn’t bother me. What does, is that abuse exists in some communities who are completely exploited by art dealers. But for me, what is most unfortunate is that the diversity of Aboriginal works is not really recognised. The wider public only knows artists from the Northern Territory, Arnhem Land, or Papunya. Australia is a vast land, which is why, through EGAAC, we work for Victorian artists’ promotion and distribution.

tips to make the most of Your learning expe-rience1 Experiment and take risksLeave perfectionism at the door and allow yourself to make mistakes because you will learn from them.

2 Set realistic expectationsIt takes time to become profi-cient in any language and ex-pect periods when you do not seem to be making any pro-gress at all.

3 Be proactive and organi-sedKeep track of your achieve-ments (last week, I learnt how to... I am now able to say...)

4 Study frequentlyIt is more efficient to break study time into smaller chunks than study infrequently for ex-tended periods of time. Try to do a few homework exercises every second day rather than doing all the homework the night before the class.

5 Enjoy French cultureDo not miss an opportunity to practice, either at the Alliance, at home or while going out. Say ‘bonjour’ to our recep-tionists, listen to the French news, visit French restaurants in Melbourne or take a trip to New Caledonia!

conditions of enrolmentFeesEnrolment is not confirmed unless payment is made in full before the first lesson of the session. Any student who has paid for a course and who withdraws at least 5 working days prior to the commencement of that course will be entitled to a refund less a 20% processing fee. Application for a refund must be addressed in writing to the Director. The Alliance Française cannot be held responsible for students’ changes in work commitments or personal circumstances. Please note that fees cannot be refunded or transferred if a student cancels his/her enrolment less than 5 working days prior to the commencement of that course or once the term has started. Course fees cannot be transferred to private les-sons. Fees do not include textbooks unless otherwise specified. All prices are inclusive of GST.

cLassesThe Alliance Française reserves the right to cancel or reorganise classes. Minimum class size is 5. For classes with 4 students, the course fee remains the same but the duration of the course is reduced. (20h courses to 15h, 18h courses to 13h30, 15h courses to 12h). The smaller class size allows more per-sonal attention and the course program remains identical and will be covered at a faster pace. If a fifth student enrols, the class duration will return to normal. In the case of cancellation students may request a transfer to another class, a credit note or a full refund of fees paid. Please note: classes will not be held on Victorian public holidays but will be rescheduled to a suitable time within the session.

alexander nettelbeck- PianoPianist, keyboardist, composer and producer, Alexander has recorded and performed in Aus-tralia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia with a wide variety of artists. Alexander’s original compositions have featured in dance, theatre, film and television productions.

conrad henderson- BassConrad Henderson is a jazz elec-tric and double bassist who who has performed with several re-nowned Australian and overseas musicians and also performs in many latin and African acts and other world music bands. He is also a high school music instruc-tor and composer and arranger.

Alliance Française de Melbourne now hosts a jazz concert on the first Thursday of each month in the Alliance building's cellar. With its rustic charm and intimate at-mosphere, the cellar is the ideal place for this event, where the jazzy ambiance can take over. Starting out as a core group of musicians with backgrounds in jazz, latin, soul and contempo-rary, the New Impromptu Quar-tet is expanding its repertoire into new musical horizons. The group's members bring their di-verse experience as performers, composers and producers to the project. Moving between instru-mental and vocal music, the band is always open to collaboration in a spirit of improvisation.

ben kosi karsaY- Drums Ben is a dynamic and original drummer. His love of soul and authentic rhythm and blues is evi-dent in his interpretation of con-temporary jazz numbers.

PARIS ST GERMAIN

E POSTE

04 01 2009Bonjour, ciao or hola amigo. We hope we're speaking your language (or, at least that of your car).

Short of prying the plates off cars parked along the Champs-e'lys'es (and we certainly wouldn't condone that), Euro Plates are a small piece of Europe everyone can enjoy, whether you're from Paris, Prague or Pascoe Vale. And best of all, they won't require any translation.

Euro Plates are replicas of those seen throughout the European Union, from the cobblestone streets of French villages to the autobahns of Germany.

This means, they fit beautifully into the larger number plate areas of European cars.

You can choose from the next available combination from $495*, or you can personalise your content from $695*.
