PELLETS/From B1acre greenhouse. And a contingent from the Otsego Land Trust was due to visit, looking for ways to get rid of waste from the 9,000 acres it wants to maintain as open space.

Miller, a former farmer from Frank-lin, became interested in alternate energy while serving on the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES board, which 30 years ago explored a wood-chip and sawdust burning plant – it never happened – to be located in Masonville or Sherburne.

Retired from farming since 1985, Miller continued to pursue his inter-est in alternative energy by building houses that store heat in the basement in the summer, releasing it in the winter. In this latest project, he was guided by research conducted by Dr. Jerry Cherney of Cornell, whose www.forages.org site says, “It takes 70 days to grow a crop of grass-pellet fuel; it takes 70 million years to grow a crop of fossil fuel.”

Enviro Energy was funded by the Otsego and Delaware county industrial development agencies, and the Bank of Cooperstown. Miller was glad for the help, saying, “There’s millions available for studying it; there’s no money available for doing it.”

The biggest technical challenge the Millers faced was to process the raw material – bales from farmers and wood chips from two Sidney enter-prises, Universal Forest Products and Unilam – so it would flow smoothly

through the production process. And Yankee ingenuity in accom-

plishing this is evident inside and outside the iron-coated shell building.

Again, standard equipment is adapt-ed. Under a overhang, the bales go into a standard Haybuster tub grinder, which achieves a 3/4-inch grind. The chips go through a TMR – total mixed ratio – mixer. A dust cyclone on the roof sucks and resulting material up and drops it into a hammer mill, which reduces it to a 1/4-inch grind.

The material then shoots into a me-tering bin inside the plant, which feeds a regular flow into a 200-horsepower pelletizer, “the same kind of machines used in feed mills for years,” said Bob. “It’s adapted a little bit.”

The resulting pellets go through a seed cleaner, heated by friction, and into a bagger. The bags list all Enviro

Energy’s products, and Bob or Mike circle the appropriate label, depending on what’s coming out of the bagger.

The grass pellets are $4.50 a bag, as are bags of grass-based animal bed-ding and cat litter. The company is also making a mulch and soil-condi-tioning pellet for gardens, and barley pellets that help keep ponds clear. The plant also retails high-quality wood pellets produced by Curran Energy Products, Massena.

The average household burns 2 1/2 tons of the grass pellets annually. With 50 bags per ton, that 125 bags. At $4.50, that means you can heat your home for a little over $700 per winter – and help the environment.

Stop by a half mile west of Wells Bridge (take the Otego I-88 exit) and Bob will help you load up the trunk.

According to forages.org, burn-ing grass pellets create emissions, but advances in stove technology are minimizing that. The Dell Point stove, for example, is EPA-certified to have emissions no more than 0.5 g/h, more than 10 times lower than EPA limits on emissions.

“Since any particulate matter from burning biomass is likely to be very al-kaline like the ash residue,” Cherney’s site continues, “this small amount of material should not contribute to acid rain problems; it might help alleviate them.”

In Europe, Miller said, grass pellets are being mixed with coal to lower emissions in coal-burning plants.

LEBLANC/From B1year,” he said.

Leblanc got his start when he saw Jaero perform-ing at Lake Echo. “I ran right up to him and, well, got too close – he told me to get back. But afterwards, I talked to him and he drew out a design for a set of poi, which is a chain with Kevlar balls on the end to swing on a paper plate. I told him the next time I saw him, I would have my own set.”

The two started touring together, with Jaero as the main attraction. “I started doing small venues on my own – birthday parties, burlesque shows, any place I could spin fire.”

Another fire spinner, Chris Rovo, took him on as an unofficial part of his troupe, and he combined Rovo’s “dancy” moves with Jaero’s “ninja” style when he started his own group with Jaero and some friends in 2007. “We did a lot of

free gigs at first, but now I only do free shows if it’s going to benefit the com-munity.”

The troupe has expanded from four people to eight, with some fill-ins. From May to October, Cosmic Karma is booked solid every weekend at shows around the country. “I aim towards music festivals,” he admit-ted.

In addition to spinning – Leblanc makes all his own equipment – the troupe also has fire dancers and fire eaters. “Everyone eats,” he said. “It’s not very healthy for you, so we don’t do it too often.”

And as effortless as he makes it look to his audi-ence, he’s had a few danger-ous run-ins. “You play with fire, you get burned,” he admitted. “We always try to take proper precautions, but one time, I missed a trick and had to stop a staff from hitting the crowd.” That one netted him a five-inch burn on his right forearm. “My tattoo artist keeps yelling at me for messing up his work!”

But the worst burn, he said, was when he smoth-ered a fire on a fellow dancer without a safety blan-ket. “The flames went right up her side,” he said. “I just jumped and burned my fingers really badly. That won’t happen again.”

When he returns from his four-month gig in the trop-ics, he’s got big plans for Cosmic Karma. “Our new thing is going to be acro-batics with fire – I lost 64 pounds and now I can walk on my hands and pick up fire.” Another trick, he said, involves one person holding flaming fans while he twirls her around his body. “Acro-batics with fire aren’t done very often, but this spring, it will be a whole new show,” he said, grinning.

His wild past behind him, Leblanc is happy at home with his two cats, his two dogs and his son. “The beauty of this is that I could turn it all around – I jumped onto opportunities that come along,” Leblanc said.

As a reminder of where he’s been, he had a tattoo inked over a scar on his knee: “I always get up and I always keep trying.”

PETITION AND NOTICE OF

FORECLOSURE

INDEX #: 20101284

In the Matter of the Foreclosure of Tax Liens by Proceeding in Rem pursuant to Article Eleven of the Real Property Tax Law by Otsego County.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on the 26th day of Jan , 2012 the Otsego County Treasurer, herein-after the “Enforc-ing Officer” of Otsego County hereinafter “Tax District” pursuant to law, filed with the Otsego County Clerk a PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE against various par-cels of real property for unpaid taxes.

The above cap-tioned proceeding is hereby com-menced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes or other lawful charges which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies are identi-fied on Schedule “A” of this Petition, which is annexed hereto and made a part hereof. This document serves both as a Petition of Foreclosure and a Notice of Foreclo-sure for purposes of this proceeding.

Effect of filing: All persons hav-ing or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in this petition are hereby notified that the filing of this peti-tion constitutes the commencement by the Tax District of a proceeding in the court specified in the caption above to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a fore-closure proceeding in rem.

Nature of proceed-ing: This pro-ceeding is brought against the real property only and is to foreclose the

tax liens described in this petition. No personal judgement will be entered herein for such taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof.

Persons affected: This notice is directed to all persons owning or having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in this petition. Such persons are hereby notified further that a duplicate of this petition has been filed in the Of-fice of the County Treasurer and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified as the last day for redemption.

Right of redemp-tion: Any person having or claiming to have an interest in any such real property and the legal right thereto may on or before said date redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, in-cluding all interest and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Such payment shall be made to Dan Crowell, Otsego County Treasurer, 197 Main Street, P.O. Box 265, Cooperstown, N. Y. 13326. In the event that such taxes are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so pay-ing shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record.

Last day for re-demption: The last day for redemption is hereby fixed as the 30th day of April, 2012.

Service of answer: Every person hav-ing any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in this petition may serve a duly verified answer upon the Attorney for the Tax District setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her inter-est and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Such answer must be filed in the Office of the County Clerk and served upon the Attorney for the Tax District on or before the date above mentioned as the last day for redemption.

Failure to redeem or answer: In the event of failure to redeem or answer by any person having the right to redeem or answer, such person shall be forever barred and foreclosed of all his or her right, title and interest and equity of re-demption in and to the parcel described in this petition and a judgement in foreclosure may be taken by default.

OBITUARIES

ONEONTA – Kenneth D. Stalter, M.D., of Franklin, the Fox Hospital surgeon and an accomplished athlete and outdoorsman who climbed Mount Everest’s summit, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 18, 2012, of leukemia. He was 58.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1954, in Delhi, to Kenneth H. Stalter, Jr. and Lois Clark Stalter. As a child, he lived briefly in Germany, where his father was sta-tioned with the U.S. Army. The family returned to New York, settling on a dairy farm in Franklin.

Stalter went on to be an Eagle Scout and a stand-out athlete in cross-coun-try, track and basketball at Franklin Central School, graduating in 1972. He attended the University of New Mexico on a running scholarship, developing a life-long interest in Native American culture and arti-facts. He went on to medi-cal school and a surgical residency at the University of New Mexico, where he was selected for member-ship in Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Honorary Medical Society.

While attending medical school, Stalter met Janice Harding and they were mar-ried in 1980.

Stalter returned to his childhood home of Franklin and joined Oneonta Surgi-cal Associates, working primarily with Fox Hospital He specialized in general surgery, thoracic, basic and

advanced laparoscopic sur-gery, vascular surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

He was an accomplished fly fisherman, locally and in Canada and Ice-land. He reached the summits of mountains on several continents, in addition to Everest in 2008.

He completed the Marathon de Sable, a six-day foot race across the Sahara desert

in Morocco. He was a two-time finisher of the Furnace Creek 508, most recently in October 2011, finishing the 508-mile bicycle ride across the California Mojave desert in 39 hours. He finished 14 full-length triathlons and multiple marathons, includ-ing the Boston Marathon three times.

In his spare time he also enjoyed ice climbing, ski-ing, gardening, collecting Native American artifacts and vintage ice climbing equipment, and designing and crafting stained glassed windows, including those in Fox’s meditation room.

His many memberships included the Wilderness Medical Society, American College of Surgeons and American Medical Soci-ety. In March 2010, he was inducted into the Explorers Club, an international multi-disciplinary professional so-ciety headquartered in New York City and dedicated to the advancement of field research and exploration. As a Royal Arch Mason with the Oneonta Lodge No.

466, he helped to preserve local Masonic artifacts and history.

Stalter was the co-au-thor of several professional articles and one published book, “Captive!: The Story of David Ogden and the Iro-quois,” a historical exami-nation of one his ancestors during the American Revo-

lutionary War. In addition to his wife,

survivors include his chil-dren Kenneth, Rebekah, and Lily; his sister Lori and her husband Scott White and their children Kathryn, Tyler, Alex and Troy White; two brothers, Wayne and Shane, as well as Shane’s daughters Kiah and Mara

Stalter and fiance Heather Beach; and his parents Kenneth and Lois. He was predeceased by his daughter Leah.

The memorial service was Monday, in the First United Presbyterian (Red Door) Church, with the Rev. Judith Thistle officiating.

Memorial contributions

may be made to The Leuke-mia & Lymphoma Society, Box 9031, Pittsfield, MA 01202; Aldrich Baptist Church, Box 174, Franklin, NY 13775; or Fox Hospital, One Norton Ave., Oneonta NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.
