ROADSIDEPEDESTRIANFENCING
PEDESTRIAN FENCINGRoadside Safety Fencing
INTRODUCTION
The NSW Transport Roads and Maritime Services places a very strong focuson pedestrian safety. In order to reduce the number of road accidents andfatalities involving pedestrians, Roads and Maritime Services has implementeda wide range of programs and projects that deliver pedestrian safety benefits.
Pedestrians are often difficult to see and their behaviour patterns areunpredictable, thus making them particularly vulnerable in the roadenvironment as other road users are moving significantly faster thanpedestrians.
One of these systems that has been introduced to improve pedestrian safety isthe careful placement of Pedestrian Fencing which prevents ad hoc access ofpedestrians to roadways, and channels their movements to safer crossinglocations.
DETAILS
Designed, crash tested and approved for use by the NSW Roads and MaritimeServices, Pedestrian Safety Fencing is available in 6 different Types, each witha verge or median option. Posts are available with Base Plates or In-groundapplications. Standard Posts are designed to for installation on level areas to amaximum of 7.87% (4.50º) rake for surface mount situations or 10% (5.7°) forin-ground applications. As a result of a certain degree of deflection obtainedbetween post and panel, the fence can be installed from a straight line to aminimum 15.3m radius.
The design includes the use staggered vertical balusters which offersmotorists unimpeded vision through the fencing. This allows motorists andpedestrians approaching on opposite sides to see each other which providesmotorists the opportunity to regulate their speed accordingly.
The Pedestrian Fence Panels have been designed to incorporate robust steelsections, able to withstand vehicle impacts. Should a vehicle impact occur, thepanels are designed to collapse as a whole panel to minimise the detachmentof individual elements. This not only protects pedestrians, but also prevents thecrash vehicle from becoming impaled.
The anti-climb characteristics of the design provides the suitability for usearound school zones, shopping centres, entertainment areas and touristlocations.
