National ExecutiveOfficersNATIONAL PRESIDENT

BARRY JONESBarry has been National President of the ALPsince 1992. He was the Member for Lalor from1977 to 1998. He was Minister for Science from1983 to 1990 and during that time he held otherportfolios including Technology, Customs, SmallBusiness, Prices and Consumer Affairs. Barry wasa member of the Victorian Legislative Assemblyfrom 1972 to 1977 and was a shadow ministerfrom 1973 to 1977. He has been a public servant,high school teacher, university lecturer, lawyerand broadcaster. He has degrees in arts and lawand holds doctorates in science and literature. Hewas created an Officer of the Order of Australiain 1993. In January 1998, he was Deputy Chair ofthe Constitutional Convention and in February1998, he became a ‘National Treasure’, one of 100people nominated by the National Trust asAustralian icons.

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

BILL LUDWIGBill has been Queensland branch secretary of theAustralian Workers’ Union since 1988. From 1982to 1988 he was South-West District Secretary ofthe union. Before beginning his union career, Billwas a construction worker and shearer. He is vicepresident of the Queensland ALP and senior vicepresident of the National Executive. Bill is also amember of the ACTU Executive and holdspositions on various boards including WorkcoverQueensland, QLeave, Sunsuper and the TourismTask Force Board.

JUNIOR VICE PRESIDENT

GEORGE CAMPBELLGeorge became a senator for New South Wales in1997. He has been a member of many Senatecommittees including Environment,Communications, Information Technology and theArts; Finance and Public Administration and theNational Crime Authority. He has been a memberof the National Executive and a delegate toNational Conference since 1986. Since 1994,

he has been junior vice president of the Party and currently chairs the ALP ParliamentaryCaucus. From 1993 to 1997, George was seniorvice president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

JUNIOR VICE PRESIDENT

LYN BREUERLyn is the Member for Giles, South Australia’slargest state electorate covering almost half thestate. She is the junior vice president of the ALPNational Executive, is a member of the StateExecutive and a member of the South AustralianCountry Labor Association.

NATIONAL SECRETARY

GEOFF WALSHGeoff was appointed National Secretary of theALP in April 2000 after holding a range ofpositions in government, politics and the media.

He was Victorian State Director of theDepartment of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)from April 1998, after serving in Hong Kong fromAugust 1995 as Australian Consul-General. Geoffjoined DFAT in 1991 as head of the Department’sPublic Affairs Division. In 1994, he was secondedto Prime Minister Paul Keating’s office asPrincipal Private Secretary.

Between 1983 and 1990, he was press secretary,and later special adviser, to former Prime MinisterBob Hawke. During this period he also worked forthe International Labour Organisation in Geneva.

In 1981 he was appointed as CommunicationsDirector in the ALP National Secretariat.

Geoff started his working life as a journalist andwrote for the Australian Financial Review, TheAge, Melbourne Herald-Sun and the AlburyBorder Morning Mail. He was born in Sydney in1953 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from LaTrobe University.

Federal ParliamentaryLabor LeadersLEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

KIM BEAZLEYKim became Leader of the Opposition and Leaderof the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party on 19March 1996. In the 1998 federal election he ledthe ALP to a record result for a first termOpposition—gaining 19 seats and drasticallyreducing the Howard Government’s majority. Kimwas elected to Parliament in 1980 when he wonthe Perth metropolitan seat of Swan. He heldSwan in every subsequent election, moving to theseat of Brand in 1996. He was made a minister inthe first Hawke Government in 1983 and in 1984became the youngest-ever Defence Minister andthe sixth West Australian to hold the position. Hewas Special Minister of State, Government Leaderin the House of Representatives and VicePresident of the Executive Council. Subsequentportfolio responsibilities included Transport andCommunications; Employment, Education andTraining and Finance. In June 1995, the LaborCaucus elected Kim Deputy Prime Minister.

DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITIONSHADOW TREASURER

SIMON CREANSimon was appointed Deputy Opposition Leaderand Shadow Treasurer in October 1998 followingthe federal election. From 1996 to 1998, Simonwas Shadow Industry and Regional DevelopmentMinister and Manager of Opposition Business.From 1993 to 1996 he was Minister forEmployment, Education and Training, developingand implementing the Working Nation jobs andtraining strategy. He was also responsible forhigher education, schools and vocationaleducation. He was also Minister for PrimaryIndustries and Energy and Minister for Scienceand Technology. Before entering Parliament,Simon was President of the Australian Council ofTrade Unions.

LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATESHADOW MINISTER FOR PUBLICADMINISTRATION & GOVERNMENTSERVICES

JOHN FAULKNERJohn worked for four years as a specialist teacherof children with severe disabilities and then as aresearch officer for the NSW Minister for Sportand Recreation. From 1980 to 1989 he wasAssistant General Secretary of the NSW Branch ofthe ALP. He joined the ALP as a teenager. He wasa member of the NSW Administrative Committeefrom 1978 to 1989, has been a delegate to NSWAnnual Conference since 1975 and to NationalConference since 1984. He has been a member ofthe ALP National Executive since 1989. Johnentered the Senate on 4 April 1989. After theelection in March 1993, he became Minister forVeterans’ Affairs, Minister for Defence Scienceand Personnel and Manager of GovernmentBusiness in the Senate. In 1994, he moved intoCabinet and served as Minister for theEnvironment, Sport and Territories until March1996. John became Labor leader in the Senate inMarch 1996.

DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITIONIN THE SENATESHADOW MINISTER FOR TRADE

PETER COOKPeter entered the Senate in 1983 and was aminister from 1988 and a member of Cabinetfrom 1990 to 1996. His portfolios includedIndustry, Technology and Science; Trade;Industrial Relations; Shipping and AviationSupport and Resources. He also held the RegionalDevelopment portfolio in 1994. Previously Peterwas an industrial officer with the FederatedClerks’ Union in South Australia and later inWestern Australia with the Miscellaneous WorkersUnion and the Building Workers Industrial Union.In 1981, he was elected vice president of theAustralian Council of Trade Unions.

State ParliamentaryLabor LeadersAUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

JON STANHOPE

Jon was elected Opposition Leader in the ACTLegislative Assembly following the 1998 election.He was one of three new Labor members and hiselection came after 22 years membership of theParty and a long career in the CommonwealthPublic Service. He was also senior adviser to thethen Attorney General Michael Lavarch, DeputyAdministrator and Official Secretary of NorfolkIsland and Secretary of the House ofRepresentatives Standing Committee on Legaland Constitutional Affairs. He was senior adviseron native title issues to federal Labor leader KimBeazley. He is a former president of the ACTCouncil for Civil Liberties and a convenor of theCommittee for Racial Respect.

NEW SOUTH WALES

BOB CARR

Bob was first elected to the New South WalesParliament as the Member for Maroubra inOctober 1983. In 1984, he was elected to Cabinetas Minister for Planning and Environment in theWran Government and in 1986 took over theadditional portfolios of Heritage and ConsumerAffairs. He was elected unopposed as Leader ofthe Opposition in 1988. In the May 1991 election,under Bob’s leadership, the Labor Party cameclose to victory. On 25 March 1995, after winning50 seats in the Legislative Assembly, Bob becamethe 13th Labor Premier of New South Wales. InMarch 1999, he led the Party to victory again,increasing Labor’s majority to 55 seats. In 1999,Bob was awarded the prestigious FulbrightDistinguished Fellow Award Scholarship. Heturned his grant into five one-off $10,000scholarships to teachers of Modern History inNSW schools.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

CLARE MARTIN

Clare was elected Leader of the NorthernTerritory Parliamentary Labor Party in February1999. She has been the Member for Fannie Bay

since 1995 and she is currently Shadow Treasurerand Shadow Minister for Health, Family andChildren’s Services; Lands, Planning andEnvironment; Housing; Ethnic Affairs and Artsand Museums. Clare was previously a senior ABCjournalist, working in Sydney and Canberrabefore moving to Darwin.

QUEENSLAND

PETER BEATTIEPeter became Premier of Queensland on 26 June1998. He was first elected to Parliament as theMember for Brisbane Central in 1989 and becameMinister for Health after the June 1995 election.Peter was elected Opposition Leader in 1996.Previously he was State Secretary of theQueensland branch of the Party. Under the GossGovernment he was appointed chair of theParliamentary Criminal Justice Committee. Peterhas been a delegate at five National Conferences,an ex officio member of the National Executiveand a member of the National CampaignCommittee. He was Queensland State CampaignDirector for 16 elections.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

MIKE RANNAfter a career as a journalist and a politicaladviser, Mike was elected to the South AustralianParliament in December 1985. In December 1989,he was elected to the South Australian Cabinet asMinister of Employment and Further Education,Minister of Youth Affairs, Minister of AboriginalAffairs and Minister Assisting in Ethnic Affairs. Hewas later Minister of Business and RegionalDevelopment, Minister of Tourism and Minister ofState Services. In 1993, Mike was elected DeputyLeader of the Opposition and the following yearwas elected Leader. In October 1997, Mike led theParty to a 9.4 per cent swing in the Stateelection—almost doubling Labor’s representationin the House of Assembly.

TASMANIA

JIM BACONJim was elected to the Tasmanian Parliament asthe Member for Denison in 1996. He was electedPremier of Tasmania in August 1998. His currentportfolio responsibilities include Local

Government, Aboriginal Affairs, Arts, SmallBusiness, Investment, Trade and Development,Museum and Art Galleries, Tourism, Sport andRecreation, Office of Antarctic Affairs, PortArthur, Employment, Multicultural & EthnicAffairs and Service Tasmania. From 1989 to 1995,Jim was secretary of the Tasmanian Trades andLabor Council and a member of the ACTUExecutive. From1980 to 1989 he was statesecretary of the Tasmanian branch of theBuilders’ Labourers Federation.

VICTORIA

STEVE BRACKSSteve was sworn in as Premier of Victoria on 20October 1999. He has been a member of the ALPfor 25 years and was first elected as Member forWilliamstown following a by-election in 1994.Steve began his career as a teacher and laterbecame the executive director of the BallaratEducation Centre. He was a political adviser toformer premiers John Cain and Joan Kirner andthe state manager of Victoria’s EmploymentPrograms. In 1999, he became Leader of the StateParliamentary Labor Party and held variousshadow portfolios including Treasury,Multicultural Affairs, Finance, Industrial Relations,Employment and Tourism.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

GEOFF GALLOPGeoff was elected to Parliament as the Memberfor Victoria Park in 1986 in a by-election. He wasMinister for Education and Parliamentary andElectoral Reform in 1990 and was later appointedMinister Assisting the Treasurer. From 1991 to1993 he was Minister for Fuel and Energy, Micro-Economic Reform, Parliamentary and ElectoralReform. Subsequent shadow portfolioresponsibilities included Resources and Energy,Parliamentary and Electoral Reform, Health andPublic Sector Management and Accountability,Sport and Recreation and Aboriginal Affairs. Hewas elected Opposition Leader in October 1996.Before entering Parliament, Geoff was a RhodesScholar and a lecturer in history at MurdochUniversity.

Michael Kerrisk is State Secretary and campaigndirector of the ACT branch of the Party. Before formallyworking for the Labor Party, Michael was anelectorate officer and ministerial adviser to theformer Federal Member for Barton, Gary Punch MP.

Paul IngwersenPaul currently works as a national organiser for theCommunity and Public Sector Union. He joined theALP in 1987 and has held a number of positions inthe ACT including assistant branch secretary,president and then secretary of the Ginninderrasub-branch. He is editor of the branch journalLobby.

Karen MowKaren is vice president of the ACT branch of the ALPand convenor of the ACT Status of Women PolicyCommittee. In 1998, she was a candidate for theACT Legislative Assembly. She has been a delegate inthe Community and Public Sector Union for 10years and is a member of many local communityorganisations. She has worked in theCommonwealth Public Service for 11 years,including ATSIC and the Department of Education,Training and Youth Affairs. Karen has been ateacher, worked in the retail and finance sectorsand ran a small business in Lismore. She is afoundation member of Emily’s List and is a memberof its national management committee.

Athol WilliamsAthol has been a member of the ACT branch for 26years and over this period has been a member ofvarious committees including 22 years on the ACTALP Branch Council. He was an inaugural memberand is currently vice president of the Tugggeranongsub-branch. Athol has been an official with theShop Distributive and Allied Employees Associationfor more than 25 years and has served on theNational Council of the SDA. He was a delegate toNational Conference in 1998.

Rose TraceyRose joined the ALP in 1991 at the age of 15. Sincethen she has held positions in Randwick Northbranch, Coogee State Electorate Council, WentworthFederal Electorate Council, NSW Young Labor,Australian Young Labor and the NationalOrganisation of Labor Students. She has beengeneral secretary of the National Organisation ofLabor Students, vice president of Sydney University’sRepresentative Council and women’s officer of theNSW branch of the National Union of Students. In1998, Rose was the youngest national president ofthe National Union of Students—the representativebody for 600,000 tertiary students. She has beeninvolved in campaigns in Coogee and the formerfederal seat of Phillip. Since 1999, she has been apolicy researcher for Dr Meredith Burgmann, thepresident of the NSW Legislative Council.

Anthony AlbaneseAnthony joined the ALP in 1979 and was elected asthe federal Member for Grayndler in 1996. He isParliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Minister forFamily and Community Services. He has been adelegate to five National Conferences and adelegate to State Conference since 1983. He waspresident of NSW Young Labor from 1985 to 1987.He was assistant general secretary of the NSWbranch from 1989 to 1995 and senior policy adviserto the Premier from 1995 to 1996.

Paul BastianPaul is NSW secretary of the AustralianManufacturing Workers Union. A shipwright bytrade, he also has a law degree. Paul is a member ofthe NSW Administrative Committee and a memberof the Five Dock branch of the ALP.

Diane BeamerDiane has been a member of the ALP for 25 yearsand is currently the state Member for Mulgoa in theNSW Parliament. She has held various partypositions including membership of the NationalExecutive and the NSW Administrative Committee.She was a councillor on the Penrith City Counciland was Mayor of Penrith before being elected toParliament in 1995.

Katie BrassilSince she joined the Party in 1993, Katie has heldvarious Party positions in the Upper and LowerHunter regions. In 1996, she was employed by thefederal Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon. She wasrecently elected to Cessnock City Council. Katie iscurrently the secretary of the NSW Women’s Forum,secretary of the Cessnock branch of the Party and adelegate to State and Country Conferences.

Cherie BurtonIn March 1999, Cherie became the youngest womanelected to the New South Wales Parliament when shewas elected Member for Kogarah. Previously she wasan adviser to the NSW Premier and campaigncoordinator for the Australian Republican Movement.From 1995 to 1997, Cherie was an organiser with theNational Union of Workers. In 1995 she was electedpresident of Australian Young Labor.

Wendy CairdWendy is the national secretary of the Communityand Public Sector Union and a vice president of theACTU. She has been a member of the ALP for over20 years, holding a range of positions includingState Conference delegate in New South Wales. Herinterests and expertise centre on the role ofgovernment, social policy and women’s issues.

Doug CameronDoug is the national secretary of the AustralianManufacturing Workers Union and has been vicepresident of the ACTU since 1975. He was theformer national secretary of the Metal TradesFederation of Unions.

George CampbellGeorge became a senator for New South Wales in1997. He has been a member of many Senatecommittees including Environment,Communications, Information Technology and theArts; Finance and Public Administration and theNational Crime Authority. He has been a member ofthe National Executive and a delegate to NationalConference since 1986. Since 1994 he has beenjunior vice president of the Party and currentlychairs the ALP Parliamentary Caucus. From 1993 to1997, George was senior vice president of theAustralian Council of Trade Unions.

Russ CollisonRuss is NSW state secretary of the AustralianWorkers’ Union and vice president of the LaborCouncil of NSW. He is a member of the Party’sAdministrative Committee and the Employment andIndustrial Relations Committee. He is a director ofRadio 2KY and a member of the Racing IndustryParticipants Advisory Committee.

Michael Costa

Michael is secretary of the Labor Council of NewSouth Wales. He began his working career as anironworker/rigger at the Garden Island NavalDockyard and was later a locomotive enginemanand president of the Australian Federated Union ofLocomotive Enginemen. Subsequently, Michael wasan executive officer of the Labor Council, stationmanager of Radio 2KY, managing director of ChifleyFinancial Services and a director of the State RailAuthority. In 1998, he became Labor Councilsecretary, a director of the Sydney WaterCorporation, managing director of Radio 2KY andjunior vice president of the NSW branch of theParty.

Paul CrittendenPaul joined the ALP in 1978 and has held a range ofparty positions. He was elected as the state Memberfor Wyong in 1991 and is currently ParliamentarySecretary to the Premier and the Attorney Generaland the Minister for Industrial Relations.

Janice CrosioJanice was the first woman to be a NSW Cabinetminister and the first women to serve on theexecutive at all three levels of government. Sheentered Federal Parliament in 1990 as the Memberfor Prospect. Previously she was on the FairfieldCouncil, four years as Mayor, and was a Member forthe NSW Legislative Assembly from 1981 to 1990.She held various state portfolios including NaturalResources and Local Government. At the federallevel, she has held several Parliamentary Secretaryportfolios including Social Security. She has been amember of the ALP since 1967 and is a member ofthe Australian Workers’ Union.

John Della BoscaJohn was elected to the NSW Parliament as aMember of the Legislative Council in March 1999.He is Special Minister of State, Assistant Treasurer,Minister Assisting the Premier on Public SectorManagement and Minister Assisting the Premier forthe Central Coast. He joined the ALP in 1973 and isa member of the Kariong branch. John was GeneralSecretary of the NSW branch of the Party from1990 to 1999.

Juliana DickinsonJuliana is a union organiser for the Port Kemblabranch of the Australian Workers’ Union. A memberof the ALP since 1995, Juliana is currently secretaryof the Wollongong branch. Before joining the AWU,she was women’s officer for the Victorian branch ofthe National Union of Students. Juliana is a memberof Emily’s List and a delegate to the South CoastLabor Council.

Greg DonnellyGreg is the secretary of the NSW branch of theShop Distributive and Allied Employees Union. He isa member of the ALP Administrative Committee inNew South Wales and Secretary of the InternationalRelations Policy Committee.

Luke FoleyLuke is an industrial officer with the AustralianServices Union. He is a member of the NSW ALPAdministrative Committee and the Rules Committee.

From 1992 to 1996 he was employed by SenatorBruce Childs. He was a delegate to the 1998National Conference and a proxy delegate to the1994 Conference.

Jennie George

Jennie George stood down from the presidency ofthe ACTU in March 2000 after 26 years involvementin the union movement. She was the first womanelected to the ACTU Executive and to ACTU officerpositions. She has been a delegate to State andNational conferences and is seeking preselection inthe federal seat of Throsby.

Kayee Griffin

Kayee was elected Mayor of Canterbury City Councilin 1995 and is currently in her second, four-yearterm. She has been a member of the ALP since1973. Kayee is the senior vice president of theAustralian Services Union and is chair of the NSWLocal Government Administrative Committee.

Jill Hall

Jill was elected as the federal Member for Shortlandin 1998 and has been a member of the Party formore than 30 years. She was a councillor on theLake Macquarie City Council in 1991, serving a termas deputy mayor. In 1995, she was elected as thestate Member for Swansea. She has held variousbranch and electorate council positions and hasbeen a delegate to State Conference.

Steve Hutchins

Steve has been a senator for NSW and president ofthe NSW branch since 1998. Before that he wasassistant secretary, Sydney branch secretary andstate secretary of the Transport Workers’ Union inNSW. From 1995 to 1999, Steve was federalpresident of the union. He has also been anexecutive member of the ACTU and the NSW LaborCouncil. Steve is a member of the ALP’s NationalExecutive and is chair of the Party’s Industry,Infrastructure and Regional Development NationalPolicy Committee. He has been a member of theParty since 1971.

Janice Kershaw

Janice has been a councillor on the WollongongCity Council since 1991 and is currently deputy LordMayor. She has been a member of the ALP since1987, a member of the NSW branch AdministrativeCommittee and is a member of the NSW Women’sForum.

Jeff Lawrence

Jeff has been national secretary of the AustralianLiquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union(LHMU) since 1998. He became general secretary ofthe then Federated Miscellaneous Workers Union in1990 and then joint national secretary in 1992. Hehas been a member of the ALP since 1972 and is amember of the ACTU Executive.

Michael Lee

Michael is the federal Member for Dobell and theShadow Minister for Education. He was elected tofederal Parliament in 1984 after a career inengineering. As a backbencher, he chaired the PrintMedia Inquiry which led to tighter merger laws forprint media takeovers. After the 1993 election,Michael was appointed to Cabinet as Minister forResources and Minister for Tourism. From 1994 to1996 he was Minister for Communications, Arts andTourism. He was Shadow Minister for Health from1996 to 1998 moving to Education in 1998.

Kevin Maher

Kevin has been a member of the Australian WorkersUnion for 19 years through the FederatedIronworkers Association and then the Federation ofIndustrial Manufacturing Engineering Employees.Kevin is currently branch secretary of the Newcastleand Northern Rivers branch of the AWU and is statepresident of the New South Wales branch of theunion. He has been a member of the ALP for 18years.

John Maitland

John is the national secretary of the Construction,Forestry, Mining and Energy Union and thepresident of the International Foundation ofChemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers Unions(ICEM). The ICEM is one of the largest internationaltrade union organisations representing more than20 million workers from 120 countries and with 400affiliates.

Stephen Martin

Stephen Martin is Shadow Minister for Defence andfederal Member for the seat of Cunningham, whichincludes the city of Wollongong. He was firstelected to Federal Parliament in December 1984 andhas been a member of the ALP since 1979. Ingovernment, Stephen was Parliamentary Secretaryto the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade andwas Speaker of the House of Representatives from1993 to 1996.

Greg McLean

Greg is assistant national secretary of the AustralianServices Union and has been a member of the ALPsince 1972. He has held a number of branchpositions and has been a delegate to StateConference since 1998. He is a member of the StateLegal and Constitutional Reform Committee and theReview Committee.

Leo McLeay

Leo is the Chief Opposition Whip and deputymanager of Opposition Business in the House ofRepresentatives. Leo was elected in 1979 as theMember for Grayndler and is currently the Memberfor Watson. During Labor’s period in government, heheld the positions of Speaker, Deputy Speaker andChief Government Whip. Before being elected toParliament, Leo was assistant general secretary ofthe NSW branch of the ALP. He is a member of theNSW Administrative Committee, the AustralianServices Union and the Ashfield branch of the ALP.

Jim Metcher

Jim is branch secretary of the Communications,Electrical and Plumbing Union in New South Wales.He is also a member of the union’s National Counciland National Executive. Jim is a member of theParty’s Administrative Committee and a delegate toState Conference.

Belinda Neal

Belinda was a senator in the Federal Parliamentfrom 1994 to 1998 when she resigned to contestthe seat of Robertson in 1998, which was retainedby the Liberals. While in the Senate, she wasShadow Minister for Childcare, Consumer Affairs,Local Government and Housing and AssistantShadow Minister for Health. Belinda is a member ofthe Women’s Network Executive, the NSW Women’sForum and the National Community ServicesCommittee. Belinda was a councillor on the GosfordCity Council from 1991 to 1995.

Damian O’Connor

Damian is the assistant general secretary of theNSW ALP. He was formerly secretary of theConstruction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union(Energy Division) in NSW. From 1987 to 1989, hewas an electorate officer for Senator Arthur Gietzeltand then Senator John Faulkner. He is a member ofthe CFMEU and the Australian Services Union.

Jan Primrose

Jan is a senior industrial resource officer with theAustralian Manufacturing Workers Union in NSW.She has been a teacher, social worker, universitylecturer and electorate officer. She is a member ofthe ALP’s Administrative Committee in NSW and is amember of the Camden branch of the Party.

Andrew Refshauge

Andrew is currently Deputy Premier of New SouthWales, Minister for Urban Affairs and Planning,Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister forHousing. A member of the Labor Party since 1978,Andrew was elected Member for Marrickville in1983. In 1988, he was elected deputy leader of theOpposition. Following the ALP’s victory in NSW in1995, he was appointed Deputy Premier, Ministerfor Health and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. Adoctor, Andrew has particular expertise inAboriginal health and was a joint founder of theDoctor’s Reform Society.

Bernie Riordan

Bernie is the secretary of the NSW branch of theElectrical Trades Union and the state secretary ofthe Communications, Electrical, Electronic, Energy,Information, Postal, Plumbing and Allied ServicesUnion (Electrical Division, NSW branch). He is amember of the NSW Administrative Committee anda current member of the Industry, Infrastructureand Regional Development National PolicyCommittee.

Christine Robertson

Christine has been a member of the ALP for 20years. She lives in Duri on the north west slopes ofNew South Wales and is a member of the Tamworthbranch of the Party. She is president of theTamworth State Electoral Council, a member of thestate Administrative Committee, a delegate to StateConference and the chair of the Country LaborCommittee of the NSW branch.

Eric Roozendaal

Eric is the general secretary of the NSW branch ofthe ALP and is also campaign director. He has beena member of the Party since 1981 and waspreviously assistant general secretary and NSW stateorganiser. Before working at the Party office, Ericwas an adviser to the former NSW Minister forSports, Michael Cleary. He has been the marginalseats coordinator for both state and federalelections in NSW.

Janelle SaffinA Party member for 17 years, Janelle is a Member ofthe NSW Legislative Council. She is the deputyconvenor of the Country Labor NSW ParliamentaryGroup and has held various party positions atbranch level. She was previously a candidate for thestate seat of Lismore.

Tony SheldonTony is a long time member of the NSW branch ofthe Party, joining at the age of 15. He has been amember in Sydney’s western suburbs and innerwest. He has been a member of Industrial Relationsand Transport Policy Committees. Tony has beenchair of the Disputes Committee and a member ofthe Administrative Committee. Currently he is statesecretary of the NSW branch of the TransportWorker’s Union and is an executive member of theNSW Labor Council.

Ursula StephensUrsula is senior vice president of the NSW branch ofthe Party and a founding member of NSW CountryLabor. She is a NSW delegate to the NationalExecutive and a member of the Government andService Delivery Policy Committee.

John SuttonJohn has been a member of the ALP for 22 years.For the past seven years he has been the nationalsecretary (Construction Division) of theConstruction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Unionand the national assistant secretary of the union. Afull time official for 20 years, John represents theunion on the ACTU Executive.

Barry TubnerBarry has been a member of the ALP for 27 yearsand is NSW state secretary and national presidentof the state branch of the Textile Clothing andFootwear Union of Australia. Beginning his workinglife in the clothing industry, he joined the ClothingTrades Union at the age of 16 and has been amember for 34 years. He was elected secretary andnational president of the union in 1997. He hasbeen a strong campaigner against the exploitationof outworkers in the industry.

Lynda VoltzLynda has been a member of the ALP since 1981and is a member of the Public Service Association(NSW). She is currently a member of the NSWAdministrative Committee and is the NSWrepresentative on the national Emily’s List

Sue WestSue is a senator for NSW and deputy president ofthe Senate. She has been a member of the ALPsince 1975. Sue is the secretary of the FederalParliamentary Labor Party Caucus. She is also theInternational Secretary of the ALP and vicepresident of Socialist International and SocialistInternational Women.

Geoff WilliamsGeoff has been branch secretary of the ShopDistributive and Allied Employees’ Association(Newcastle and Northern branch) since 1982. He hasbeen secretary/treasurer of the Shop Assistants andWarehouse Employees’ Federation (Newcastle andNorthern NSW) since 1978. Geoff has been nationalvice president of the Shop Distributive and AlliedEmployees’ Association since 1995. He was anindustrial officer from 1968 to 1978 and previouslya union organiser. He has been an ALP member for34 years.

Michael WilliamsonMichael is currently president of the Services Unionof Australia and the secretary of the Health andResearch Employees Association of NSW. He is amember of the ALP’s Administrative Committee, theIndustrial Policy Committee and the Social JusticePolicy Committee in NSW.

Harry WoodsHarry was elected as the state Member for Clarencein a by-election in May 1996. He became Ministerfor Regional Development and Minister for RuralAffairs in 1997. He was given the additionalportfolio of Local Government after the stateelection in March 1999. Before his election as astate member, Harry was the federal Member forPage from 1990 to 1996.

Zoe BettisonZoe is Party secretary in the Northern Territory andis also a senior organiser with the Shop Distributiveand Allied Employees Association. Arch BevisArch was elected as the federal Member forBrisbane in 1990 and was Parliamentary Secretaryto the Minister for Defence from 1994 to 1996. Hewas Shadow Defence Minister from 1996 to 1998and is currently the Shadow Minister for IndustrialRelations. Arch was state president of Young Laborin Queensland in 1975 and national president in1978. He was a member of the National Executivefrom 1988 to 1990, a member of the ALPAdministrative Committee and a delegate to StateConference. Before being elected to Parliament,Arch was a teacher later becoming an organiser anddeputy general secretary of the QueenslandTeachers’ Union.

Julie BignellJulie is branch secretary-elect of the AustralianServices Union’s Central and Southern Queensland(Clerical and Administrative). She was recentlyelected a vice president of the Queensland ALP andis national vice president of the Australian ServicesUnion. She is a former convenor of the SocialJustice Policy Committee and has been an office-holder in her local branch.

Ian BlackwoodIan is a working coalminer from Central Queenslandand has represented the Construction, Forestry,Mining and Energy Union at State and NationalConferences since 1989.

Joan BuddJoan has been the Party’s general returning officerin Queensland since 1988. She is a member of theALP National Executive and a director andshareholder of Labor Holdings Pty Ltd. She iscampaign director for the federal MP Con Sciaccaand Deputy Queensland Premier, Jim Elder. Joan is amember of the Vienna Woods/Sheldon branch.

Dave CallaghanDave has been a delegate to State Conference since1994 and was a delegate to National Conference in1998. He is a postal worker and is president of theQueensland Branch of the Communications,Electrical and Plumbing Union. He is a member ofthe Arana Hills branch of the ALP.

Russell CarrA member of the ALP for 12 years, Russell is thenorthern regional organiser with the AustralasianMeat Industry Employees Union. He was theinaugural president of the Rising Sun sub-branch inTownsville and is a former president of theStuart/Wulguru branch. Since 1994, he has been adelegate to State Conference.

Frank ChambersFrank began working in 1967 as a rigger inGladstone. In 1983, he was elected FederatedIronworkers of Australia delegate and became theunion’s branch secretary in 1992. He has been amember of the ALP since 1984 and is a member ofthe Queensland Electoral College and theAdministrative Committee. Frank is the districtsecretary of the Queensland branch of theAustralian Workers’ Union (Metals and ConstructionDivision).

Cheryl DorronCheryl has been a member of the ALP since 1991.She is vice president of the Queensland NursesUnion. She has held various branch positions in theParty, has been a delegate to State Conference andis a member of the Health and Primary IndustryPolicy Committees. She is an enrolled nurse who hasworked extensively in aged care.

Jim ElderJim is Deputy Premier of Queensland and theMember for Capalaba. Previously he was Ministerfor Health, Minister for Transport and Minister forBusiness, Industry and Regional Development. Frank GilbertFrank has lived most of his life in rural and regionalQueensland and is a member of the Mackay branchof the Party. He has been an ALP member since1973. He is a former member of the QueenslandALP Administrative Committee and a number ofstate policy committees.

Jenny GribaudoA union industrial advocate, Jenny has been amember of the Party since 1992. She is currentlyvice president of Queensland Labor Women’sOrganisation and is a member of the National PolicyCommittee for Government and Service Delivery.Jenny is currently secretary of the Mt Ommaneybranch and is campaign director for the state seatof Mt Ommaney. She was recently elected to thestate’s Administrative Committee.

David HarrisonDavid is the Queensland secretary of the AustralianManufacturing Workers’ Union. He has been a fulltime official of the union for 20 years and is amember of the AMWU National Council. He is adirector of Sunsuper Pty Ltd, a director of theQueensland Investment Corporation, DeputyChairman of the Port of Brisbane Corporation and adirector of the Industrial Supplies OfficeQueensland. He has been a delegate to ALP StateConference since 1979 and is president of theQueensland Council of Unions.

John HoggJohn has been a senator for Queensland since 1996.Previously he was the Queensland branch secretaryof the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Unionfor 15 years. He has been a Party member for 24years. During that time he has been a delegate toQueensland State Conference, a member of thestate Administrative Committee, a delegate toNational Conference and a member of the NationalExecutive. In the Federal Parliament, he is a memberof the Foreign Affairs, Defence and TradeCommittee, the Joint Committee of Public Accountsand Audit and the Senate Select Committee onSuperannuation and Financial Services.

Gary HowcroftGary has been a delegate to the last four NationalConferences and has been a State Conferencedelegate for the last 15 years. He has been an ALPmember for 15 years and is assistant state secretaryof the Construction and General Division of theConstruction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.

Chris Ketter

Chris is branch secretary of the Queensland branchof the Shop, Distributive and Allied EmployeesAssociation. He has been an ALP member for 14years and is currently deputy convenor of theEconomic Management Policy Committee, adelegate to State Conference and a member of theCentral Electoral College.

Bill Ludwig

Bill has been Queensland branch secretary of theAustralian Workers’ Union since 1988. From 1982 to1988, he was South-West District Secretary of theunion. Before beginning his union career, Bill was aconstruction worker and shearer. He is vicepresident of the Queensland ALP and senior vicepresident of the National Executive. Bill is also amember of the ACTU Executive and holds positionson various boards including Workcover Queensland,QLeave, Sunsuper and the Tourism Task Force Board.

Sandra McGrady

Sandra is a life member of the Queensland branchof the ALP. She is involved in many communityorganisations in Mt Isa.

Barry Meiklejohn

Barry is state president of the Queensland branch ofthe Australian Workers’ Union and southern districtsecretary, based in Brisbane. He is also a member ofthe union’s National Executive and State Executive.Barry is a member of the Queensland ALPAdministrative Committee and a delegate to StateConference.

Cameron Milner (State Secretary—non voting)

Cameron is State Secretary and campaign directorof the Queensland branch of the Party. He joinedthe ALP in 1991 in Melbourne and has held a seriesof party positions. He is currently a member of theSandgate branch. Previously he was a stateorganiser, a research officer with the AustralianWorkers Union and a research assistant with theNational Union of Students. Amanda Richards

Amanda is an official with the Queensland NursesUnion and is a member of the Alderley/Greenhillsbranch of the Party. She joined the ALP in 1989 andsince then has held various positions. She iscurrently a member of the Local GovernmentAssessment Committee and the Machinery ofGovernment Policy Committee.

Garry Ryan

Garry has been a member of the Party since 1975and is currently a member of the AdministrativeCommittee and Central Electoral College. He is adelegate to State Conference and a member of theQueensland Branch Executive Committee. Garry hasbeen a member of the Australian Workers’ Union for28 years and a full time official of the union since1980. He is currently south western districtsecretary of the Queensland Branch of the AWU.

Con Sciacca

Con was born in Sicily and in 1987 became the firstItalian-born member of the federal Parliamentwhen he was elected as Member for Bowman. From1990 to 1994, he was Parliamentary Secretary forSocial Security as well as Parliamentary Secretaryfor the Arts and Administrative Services from 1993to 1994. He later became Minister for Veterans’Affairs and Minister assisting the Treasurer forSuperannuation. Con has been Shadow Minister forImmigration and Multicultural Affairs since 1998.

Danielle Shanahan

Danielle has been employed by the National Unionof Workers (Queensland branch) for six yearsworking as industrial officer, training officer andnow as an organiser. She has been a member of theALP for eight years and is a member of QueenslandLabor Women’s Executive.

Peter Shooter

Peter is currently employed by the AustralianManufacturing Workers Union. He has been a Partymember since 1971 and has been a federalcandidate for Fairfax and state candidate for Albert.He was a regional organiser for the MiscellaneousWorkers Union for six years and was president ofthe Sunshine Coast Trades and Labor Council. In1991, he became state organiser for the Party andassistant state secretary in 1994. In 1999 he wasappointed senior policy adviser in the Office of thePremier in Townsville.

Kathie StandenKathie is an adviser to the Queensland Minister forTransport and Main Roads, Steve Bredhauer. She hasbeen involved in student politics and was assistantsecretary of the Queensland branch of Young Laborand a member of the Executive. She is currently amember of the Disputes Tribunal.

Carryn SullivanCarryn joined the ALP 20 years ago and since thenhas held various positions at branch level. She waselected to State Council in 1998 and has also beena State Conference delegate since 1988. This is thesecond time she has been a delegate to NationalConference. In 1999 she was endorsed as the ALPcandidate for the new state seat of Pumicestone.

Wayne SwanWayne is the federal Member for Lilley and ShadowMinister for Family and Community Services. Wayneheld the seat from 1993 to 1996 and was returnedat the 1998 election. He has held many Partypositions including state secretary of theQueensland branch from 1991 to 1993; statecampaign director from 1988 to 1993. He has alsobeen a member of the ALP AdministrativeCommittee in Queensland and a delegate to fiveNational Conferences.

Jackie TradJackie is policy adviser to the Queensland Ministerfor Families, Youth and Community Care andMinister for Disability Services, Anna Bligh. Jackiehas been a member of the ALP for 10 years. Michelle BertossaMichelle joined the ALP eight years ago at the ageof 15. Since then she has been a State Council andConference delegate, a National Conferencedelegate and an executive member of the SouthAustralian branch of Australian Young Labor.Michelle is currently completing a Bachelor ofNursing and during her time at the University ofSouth Australia has been active in the StudentsAssociation serving as Equity and Welfare vicepresident.

Quentin BlackAn ALP member since 1974, Quentin has heldpositions on the South Australian State Executive,Campaign Committee and State and FederalRedistribution Committees. He is a psychologist andresearch scientist who currently lectures at threeuniversities and has provided strategic analysis forstate and federal elections. He was the ALPcandidate for Hartley in 1997 obtaining an 11.7 percent swing and is the candidate for one of SouthAustralia’s most marginal electorates at the nextstate election. Quentin has been a union membersince 1975.

Lyn BreuerLyn is the Member for Giles, South Australia’slargest state electorate covering almost half thestate. She is the junior vice president of the ALPNational Executive, is a member of the StateExecutive and a member of the South AustralianCountry Labor Association.

Ben BrowneBen is a farmer and a member of the Party in SouthAustralia’s mid-north and has held various positionsat sub branch and State Executive levels. Ben wasthe candidate for Stuart in the 1997 state election,securing an eight per cent swing in what wasregarded as a safe Liberal seat.

Mark ButlerMark is state secretary of the Australian LiquorHospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union inSouth Australia. He is a past state president of theALP and is an executive member of the UnitedTrades and Labor Council of South Australia.

Ralph ClarkeRalph has been a member of the South AustralianParliament since 1993 and was Deputy Leader from1994 to 1997. He has held a number of shadowportfolios including Industrial Relations,Employment, Regional Development and Industryand Trade. Before entering Parliament, Ralph wasstate secretary of the Australian Services Union.

Don FarrellDon is the national president of the ShopDistributive and Allied Employees’ Association. He isalso state secretary of the SDA in South Australia.Don has been a member of the ALP since 1976 andis a past president of the South Australian Branch.

Steve GeorganasSteve is the ALP candidate for the federal seat ofHindmarsh and has lived in the electorate all hislife. He was the candidate in the 1998 electionachieving a seven per cent swing which transformedHindmarsh from a safe Liberal seat to a marginalseat. He worked on the 1993 and 1996 federalcampaigns and was campaign manager for the stateseat of Hanson in 1993. He is currently secretary ofthe Hanson sub branch and works on the staff ofSenator Nick Bolkus.

Ian Hunter (State Secretary—non voting)

Ian is currently State Secretary of the SouthAustralian branch of the ALP. He was previously astate organiser with the Party and adviser to theMinister for Immigration and the Minister forAdministrative Services. He has also worked as anelectorate officer, a youth worker and a researchassistant.

Carmela LuscriCarmela has been a member of the ALP since the1980s and has been involved in state and federalelection campaigns. In the 1996 and 1998 federalelections, she campaigned in the seat of Adelaide.She is currently treasurer for the Hindmarshcampaign. Carmela has been a delegate to StateConvention and State Council and was a member ofthe Labor Women Executive from 1995 to 1999.

Steven MaySteven joined the ALP in 1993 and is currently onthe staff of Senator Nick Bolkus, Shadow Ministerfor the Environment and Heritage. After studyingaccounting at the University of South Australia,Steven worked for the Australian Services Unionand was a candidate for the state seat of Schubertin 1997.

Noel Paul

A member of the ALP since 1973, Noel has heldvarious sub-branch positions and national and statepositions with Australian Young Labor. CurrentlyNoel is South Australian and Northern Territorystate secretary of the CEPU Postal andTelecommunications branch. He has represented theunion at ALP State Council since 1973.

John Quirke

John was the state Member for Playford from 1989to 1997 when he was appointed to the Senate. Hewas elected to the Senate in 1998. He has been amember of several Senate committees includingForeign Affairs, Defence and Trade and is DeputyOpposition Whip in the Senate. Previously a teacher,John has been a member of the ALP since 1979 and was a member of the State Executive from1986 to 1991.

Chris Schacht

Chris has been a member of the ALP since 1965. Hewas previously a junior vice president of the ALP, aformer delegate and proxy delegate to NationalConference and State Secretary of the SouthAustralian branch. He has served on various nationalpolicy committees over the past 20 years, waselected to the Senate in 1987, a Federal Ministerfrom 1993 to 1996 and is currently ShadowMinister for Veterans’ Affairs.

Margaret Sexton

Margaret joined the Labor Party in 1974 and iscurrently a member of the National Executive andconvenor of the National Government ServiceDelivery Committee. She has been a trade unionistfor many years, was national president of theCommunity and Public Sector Union until March2000 and an ACTU Council member. She is currentlyemployed as a senior research officer in theDepartment of Social Inquiry at the University ofAdelaide.

Bob Sneath

Bob is branch secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union in South Australia. He joined theALP in the 1970s and was the Naracoorte sub-branch president for five years. A former shearer, he has been on the ALP State Executive for fouryears, the AWU National Executive for four yearsand currently president of the South AustralianBranch of the Party.

John ThomasJohn has been a member of the ALP since 1972 andover the years has held various positions at subbranch and FEC level. He has worked on variousplatform committees and has been a delegate toprevious National Conferences. He was a member ofthe Duffy Committee of Review into rule changes in1994. He is an official with the AustralianWorkers’Union in South Australia and is a memberof the Branch Executive.

Cressida WallCressida was president of Young Labor in SouthAustralia from 1994 to 1995 and has been amember of the South Australian State ExecutivePlatform and Campaigns Committee. She has alsorun as a candidate for the Legislative Council. She isa lawyer and a member of the South AustralianDisputes Committee.

Jay WeatherillJay has been a member of the South Australianbranch of the ALP for 16 years and is the ALPcandidate for the lower house seat of Cheltenham.Jay has worked as a legal officer for the SouthAustralian branch of the Australian Workers’ Unionand the Liquor Hospitality and MiscellaneousWorkers Union. Trish WhiteTrish was elected to the South Australian Parliamentin 1994 as the Member for Taylor. An engineeringand arts graduate, Trish spent nine years working asan electronics engineer. She joined the ALP in 1990.

Penny WongCurrently an official with the Australian LiquorHospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union inSouth Australia, Penny was recently preselected forthe Senate. Jillian ArcherJill is an organiser with the Tasmanian branch of theLiquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous WorkersUnion. Before that she worked as a case managerfor the union’s Job Skills Program and was a teacherin Zimbabwe, NSW and Tasmania. She helpedestablish the Break o Day branch of the Party innorth east Tasmania. Currently Jill is the secretary ofthe Bellerive/Howrah branch and is a member of theAdministrative Committee.

Catryna BilykCatryna is employed as the training and recruitmentcoordinator of the Tasmanian branch of theAustralian Services Union. For many years Catrynahas been secretary of the Sandfly Branch of theparty and a member of the State AdministrativeCommittee. She was a member of the ALP NationalExecutive from 1994 until 1998 and is currently amember of the National Security and Trade PolicyCommittee. Catryna is also an endorsed senatecandidate for Tasmania.

Carol Brown (Acting State Secretary—non voting)

Carol is acting state secretary of the Party’sTasmanian branch. She joined the ALP in 1984 andhas been a delegate to State Conference since 1985.She is a member of the Tasmanian state and federalcampaign teams. Carol has been a member of theTasmanian Administrative Committee since 1998.

Trevor CordwellTrevor joined the Tasmanian branch of the ALP in1985 and is secretary of the Tasmanian branch ofthe Australian Services Union. He is president of theSandfly branch and a delegate to State Conference.

Lara GiddingsLara is currently state president of the ALP’sTasmanian branch. In 1996, she was elected to theTasmanian State Parliament, becoming the youngestwoman ever elected. Lara joined the Labor Party in1990, is a member of the Sorell branch and a pastpresident of Young Labor. She was a delegate toNational Conference in 1994.

Mike GreyMike is the Tasmanian secretary of the ConstructionForestry Mining and Energy Union and state

secretary of the Forest and Forest Products BuildingManufacturing Division. He is director/trustee of theTimber Industry Superannuation Scheme, director ofthe Tasmanian Forest Industries Training Board,executive member of the Tasmanian ForestryIndustry Council and director of the HollybankForest Training Centre. Don Hayes

Don is the secretary of the Tasmanian branch of theAustralian Workers’ Union. He has been a memberof the union for 37 years and an ALP member since1990. Don has also been a delegate to theTasmanian State Conference.

Duncan Kerr

Duncan has been a member of the ALP since 1968.He is a member of the National Executive and hasheld various Tasmanian branch positions includingtreasurer and vice president. He has served as amember of the Tasmanian AdministrativeCommittee for over a decade. Duncan was electedto the House of Representatives in 1987 and heldoffice as Attorney General and Minister for Justicein the Keating Government. Currently he is theShadow Minister for the Arts and for Justice andCustoms.

Sue Mackay

Sue was elected to the Senate in 1996 and isShadow Minister for Regional Services, Territoriesand Local Government. She joined the ALP in 1978and has worked for a number of unions includingthe Community and Public Sector Union. Beforeentering Parliament she was state secretary of theTasmanian Branch of the ALP for four years. Suewas also a member of the National Executive andthe National Campaign Committee.

Kerry O’Brien

A member of the Party since 1966, Kerry enteredthe Senate in 1996. He has been Opposition Whip inthe Senate since 1998 and has been a member ofvarious committees including Foreign Affairs,Defence and Trade. He was Tasmanian branchsecretary of the Federated Miscellaneous Workers’Union and joint branch secretary of the LiquorHospitality and Miscellaneous Workers’ Union. Louise SullivanA founding member of the Lower Sandy Bay branchof the ALP, Louise was president of the branch from1996 to 1997. She has been a Party member since1989. John BrumbyJohn was elected to the Victorian Parliament in1993 and was Opposition Leader for almost sixyears, overseeing the rebuilding of the ALP and thedevelopment of new policies. Between 1983 and1990, he was the Federal Member for Bendigo andserved as chairman of the Parliamentary Committeeon Employment, Education and Training. He has alsoworked as a teacher, business consultant and unionorganiser. He has been an ALP member for 21 yearsand a delegate at National and State Conferences.

Christine CampbellChristine has been the Member for Pascoe Valesince 1996 and is currently the Minister forCommunity Services. She is a member of severalCabinet committees including Aboriginal Affairs,Social Development, Multicultural Affairs, Drugs,Crime Prevention and Corrections, the CommunitySupport Fund, Executive Council and the HumanServices Caucus Bill Committee. Stephen ConroyStephen was first sworn in as a senator for Victoriain April 1996. Following the 1998 election, he wasappointed Shadow Minister for Financial Servicesand Regulation. He has been a member of variousparliamentary committees including Corporationsand Securities and the New Tax System—SelectCommittee. Previously he held the position ofDeputy Opposition Whip. He was also a councillorof the City of Footscray.

Brian DaleyBrian is the Victorian branch secretary of theAustralian Liquor Hospitality and MiscellaneousWorkers Union and has held that position since1995. He is currently senior vice president of theVictorian branch of the Party.

Steve DargavelSteve Dargavel was the federal Member for Fraserafter winning a by-election in 1997. Following anelectoral redistribution, he returned to Victoria andnow works for the Australian ManufacturingWorkers Union. He is a member of the ALP’sVictorian Administrative Committee.

Ben DavisBen has been a member of the ALP since 1989 andis secretary of the Bendigo South branch. He is thevice president of the Victorian branch of theAustralian Workers Union and has been an organiserwith the union since 1996. Ben is also a delegate toState Conference and is a member of the Economicand Manufacturing Policy Committee.

Joseph de BruynJoe has been the national secretary-treasurer of theShop Distributive and Allied Employees Association

since 1978 and ACTU vice president since 1994. Heis also a member of the World Executive of UnionNetwork International (UNI) and is president of UNIin the Asia Pacific region. Joe is a member of theACTU Executive and the ALP National Executive.

Charlie DonnellyCharlie is the secretary of the Victorian branch ofthe National Union of Workers. He has worked forthe union for 13 years as industrial officer,organiser and assistant secretary. Charlie is also adirector of the Labour Union CooperativeRetirement Fund and Labour Union Insurances Pty Ltd.

Michael DonovanMichael is Victorian branch secretary of the ShopDistributive and Allied Employees Association. He isa member of the Victorian ALP AdministrativeCommittee and the President of the Victorian ALPIndustrial Affairs Policy Committee.

Jennifer DoranJennifer is a senior industrial officer at theAustralian Council of Trade Unions. She has been amember of the ALP for more than 20 years and hasworked on many state and national policycommittees. She was president of the Victorianbranch from 1992 to 1994. She has been a memberof the Social Policy and Community DevelopmentPlatform Committee involved in drafting thecurrent national platform.

David Feeney (State Secretary—non voting)

David was elected to the position of State Secretaryelect in March 1999 and became State Secretaryand campaign director in September 1999 when hispredecessor John Lenders was elected to theVictorian Parliament. From 1994 to 1999 Davidworked as an industrial advocate for the TransportWorkers’ Union of Australia. In 1993and 1994 Davidwas an adviser to the then Leader of the Opposition,John Brumby.

He has been a member of the ALP since 1987, andserved on the Administrative Committee from 1994to 1999.

Monica GouldMonica began her career as a union official withthe former Manufacturing Grocers’ Union in 1980and by 1993 was general vice president of theNational Union of Workers. She was a member of

Withthe election of the Bracks Government in October1999 she became Minister for Industrial Relations,Minister Assisting the Minister for Workcover andLeader of the Government in the Legislative Council.

Danielle Green

Danielle Green has been an ALP member since 1988.She has been a delegate to State Conference,deputy president of the Disputes Tribunal andsecretary of the Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslanders Policy Committee and the Housing andConstruction Policy Committee. She is a stateexecutive member of the Labor Women’s Network.

Alan Griffin

Alan is the federal Member for Bruce and theParliamentary Secretary to the Shadow Minister forHealth. Before his election to parliament, he workedas a union official, electorate officer and ministerialadviser. He was a former councillor on theSpringvale City Council.

Tim Holding

Tim is the Member for Springvale in the VictorianParliament. He was a councillor with the City ofWaverley and a former president of AustralianYoung Labor. He is a member of the Public OfficeSelection Committee and has been a StateConference delegate since 1991. Before enteringParliament, Tim worked for Senator Robert Ray.

Abbey Howe

Abbey is a state organiser with the Victorian branchof the ALP. She previously worked with the Rail,Tram and Bus Union. Abbey has been a member ofthe Party’s Administrative Committee and presidentof the Transport Policy Committee. She is currentlysecretary of the North Fitzroy Branch and a StateConference delegate.

Kathy Jackson

Kathy is a branch secretary of the Health ServicesUnion of Australia. She is also a member of theunion’s National Executive and National Council anda director of the Health Employees SuperannuationTrust of Australia. A member of the VictorianCommunity and Health Industry Training Board, shewas previously a member of the Victorian ALPAdministrative Committee.

Gavin JenningsGavin was elected Member for Melbourne Provincein 1999 and is the Cabinet Secretary in theVictorian Government. He has been a member ofthe Victorian Administrative Committee and theCampaign Committee since 1995.

Martin KinghamMartin was first elected state secretary of theConstruction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union in1993 after earlier working as a carpenter, uniondelegate and health and safety representative. Hewas re-elected in 1996. He is an executive memberof the Victorian Trades Hall Council and a directorof the State Training Board and the BuildingIndustry Group Training Scheme.

Jenny MacklinJenny has been the Member for Jagajaga and ashadow minister since 1996. In her first term sheheld several portfolios including Aged Care, SocialSecurity, Family Services and the Status of Women.She is currently the Shadow Minister for Health andthe Status of Women. Before being elected toParliament, Jenny was responsible for two majorreviews into regional and urban development,reporting to the then Deputy Prime Minister, BrianHowe. She was also an adviser to David Whiteduring his term as Victorian Health Minister.

Gavin MarshallGavin is assistant secretary of the Electrical TradesUnion (CEPU), Victorian branch.

Andrew McKenzieAndrew has been a member of the ALP since 1974and has held various branch and policy committeepositions. Dean MighellDean is state secretary of the Electrical Trades Union(CEPU), Victorian branch.

Brendan O’ConnorBrendan is the assistant national secretary of theAustralian Services Union and has been a memberof the ALP for almost 20 years. He has served onmany policy committees and is currently presidentof the Melton branch in the electorate of Burke.

Michele O’NeilMichele is the Victorian branch secretary of theTextile, Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia.

Fiona RichardsonFiona has been a member of the ALP since 1991.She is currently a member of the AdministrativeCommittee, president of the Conservation andEnvironment Policy Committee and a delegate toState Conference. In 1996 she was campaignmanager for Deakin and in 1999 was campaignmanger for the state seat of Werribee. She hasworked for a number of state and federalparliamentarians and is now adviser for MarshaThomson, Victorian Minister for Small Business andConsumer Affairs.

Bob SercombeBob has been a member of the ALP since 1969 andhas held various branch positions. He has been aState Conference delegate and was senior vicepresident of the Victorian branch from 1989 to1991. He’s been the federal Member forMaribyrnong since 1996.

Bill ShortenBill was elected as secretary of the Victorian branchof the Australian Workers Union in July 1998 and isalso a member of the AWU’s National Executive. Heworked in a variety of semi-skilled, manual jobswhile studying for a law degree and was lateremployed by state Labor Minister, Neil Pope in thelate 1980’s. Bill is a member of the Victorian TradesHall Council’s Executive and the ALP’sAdministrative Committee and Public OfficeSelection Committee.

Howard SmithHoward has been a member of the ALP for morethan 30 years. He is currently an executive memberof the Public Office Selection Committee and amember of the Industrial Affairs Policy Committee.He is a delegate to State Conference. Howard has

worked for the Transport Workers Union for 15years and has been a member of the State andNational Transport Policy Committee.

John SpeightJohn was president of the Victorian branch of theALP from 1995 to 1997. He has been state presidentof the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Unionsince 1989 and has been a delegate to previousNational Conferences.

Greg SwordPresident of the Victorian branch of the ALP, Greg issenior vice president of the ACTU. He is generalsecretary of the National Union of Workers and hasbeen an ACTU Executive member since 1987. Gregwas the ALP national vice president from 1993 to1995 and senior vice president of the Victorianbranch from 1995 to 1997.

Marsha ThomsonMarsha was elected as Member for MelbourneNorth Province at the 1999 State election and is theMinister for Small Business and the Minister forConsumer Affairs. Her ALP involvement includes thevice presidency of the Victorian branch, membershipof the State Campaign Committee and theAdministrative Committee and national convenor ofthe Labor Women’s Network. She has worked as asenior electorate officer for Senator Stephen Conroyand as an adviser to Senator Robert Ray.

Jim TudehopeJim has been a member of the ALP for 25 years andhas been a member of the Communications,Electrical and Plumbing Union for 31 years. He iscurrently Victorian branch secretary of the CEPU.

Fiona Bennett

Fiona has worked for the Australian ManufacturingWorkers’ Union for 12 years and is also the nationalaffirmative action representative. She has been amember of the Australian Services Union for 15years and is on the Branch Executive Council. She isalso on the West Australian ALP State Executive, theFremantle Electorate Council and is treasurer of theJervoise Bay branch. She was a delegate to theState Conference in 1999 and the ALP NationalWomen’s Conference.

Mark Bishop

Mark was secretary of the West Australian branchof the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees’Association (SDA) from 1984 to 1996 when he waselected to the Senate. He is currently president ofthe West Australian branch of the SDA. He is theOpposition spokesperson for Communications in theSenate and has held many committee positions atboth State and Federal levels. Mark has been aNational Executive delegate since 1992.

Joe Bullock

Joe has been an official of the Shop Distributiveand Allied Employees’ Association since 1977 and iscurrently secretary of the West Australian branch.He is also secretary of the West Australian branch ofthe National Union of Workers. He has been anexecutive member of the West Australian Tradesand Labor Council and an ALP State Executivemember since 1986. He was a member of theNational Executive in 1994 and has been a delegateto previous National Conferences.

Sarah Burke

Sarah is a vice president of the West AustralianBranch of the Party. She is a member of theAdministrative Committee and a delegate to StateExecutive. She is also president of theScarborough/Karrinyup sub-branch. Sarah wasformerly an organiser with the Shop Distributiveand Allied Employees Association and was adelegate to the 1998 State Conference. Currentlyshe is an articled clerk with Perth law firm KottGunning.

Gary CarsonGary joined the ALP in 1975 and has held positionsas sub-branch president and secretary. He is branchsecretary of the Telecommunications and ServicesDivision of the Communications, Electrical andPlumbing Union.

Roger CookRoger has been a member of the ALP since 1984,holding a number of positions including statepresident of the West Australian branch (1998 and 1999). He is a member of the National Security and Trade Policy Committee. He has been a staff member for state and federal Labormembers, most recently as electorate officer forSenator Chris Evans.

Helen CreedHelen has been secretary of the Australian Liquor,Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers’ Union (WestAustralian branch) since 1990. She started workwith the union in 1985 as the children’s servicesorganiser and was elected national president lastyear. She is also a vice president of the ACTU andsenior vice president of the Trades and LaborCouncil of WA. She was also co-convenor of Emily’sList Australia.

Tim DalyTim is secretary of the West Australian branch ofthe Australian Workers’ Union. He is also a memberof the executive of the West Australian branch ofthe Trades and Labor Council. He is a member of theAdministrative Committee and has been a Partymember for 23 years.

Stephen DawsonA member of Senator Jim McKiernan’s staff,Stephen is currently senior vice president of theCowan Electorate Council. Previously he was statepresident of the National Union of Students andpresident of the Edith Cowan University StudentGuild. He has been involved at all levels in the Partyincluding sub-branch secretary, president, electoratecouncil delegate and delegate to the ALP StateExecutive and State Conference.

Kate DoustKate has been an official of the Shop Distributiveand Allied Employees’ Association since 1984. Shehas been a member of the ALP since 1985 and isvice president of the Trades and Labor Council ofWestern Australia. Sue EllerySue is an industrial officer with the West Australianbranch of the Liquor Hospitality and MiscellaneousWorkers’ Union. She is a member of the SocialPolicy and Community Development National PolicyCommittee, a member of the AdministrativeCommittee from 1995 and is a trustee of the Party.Sue was recently preselected for the LegislativeCouncil and is a member of Emily’s List.

Adele FarinaAdele is the convenor of the National Security andTrade National Policy Committee and has been amember of the committee since 1997. She is theendorsed ALP candidate for the South West Regionfor the next WA state election. She has been amember of the ALP for 19 years and president ofthe Morley-Embleton sub-branch for 14 years. Shehas been a delegate to the State Executive andState Conference for 16 years, an AdministrativeCommittee member for two years, a trustee of theWA Branch for two years and a delegate to NationalConference in 1998. She worked for former federalministers John Dawkins and Senator Peter Cook,former WA state Minister Bob Pearce and formerWA Deputy Premier Ian Taylor. She was a councillorand deputy Mayor of the City of Bayswater from1987 to 1990.

Jock FergusonJock is assistant state secretary of the WestAustralian branch of the Australian ManufacturingWorkers Union. He is currently vice president of theWest Australian branch of the Party and is amember of the Administrative Committee.

Jane GerickJane was elected as the federal Member for Canningin 1998. Previously she was a teacher and owned asmall business in Perth. Jane was a member of theAdministrative Committee from 1995 to 1997 and isa former trustee of the Party. She is a member ofthe West Australian State Executive and was a proxydelegate to the last National Conference.

Nick GriffithsNick is Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the WestAustralian Legislative Council. An ALP member since1974, he is Opposition Spokesperson for Finance,Racing and Gaming. He was elected as a Memberfor the East Metropolitan Region in 1993 and 1996.

John Halden (State Secretary—non voting)

Before his appointment as state secretary in Januarythis year, John was a Member of the LegislativeCouncil in the West Australian Parliament for 14years. He was Parliamentary Secretary of State inthe Lawrence Government and was Leader of theOpposition in the Legislative Council during Labor’sfirst term in opposition. He has been a member ofthe ALP since 1974.

Damian Karmelich

Damian joined the ALP at the age of 18 in 1993 andhas been secretary of the Swan Electorate Councilsince 1996. He has been involved in a various ALPfederal and state campaigns and has worked in anumber of federal offices. Damian has been adelegate to State and National AYL Conferences,ALP (WA) State Conference and ALP (WA) StateExecutive. He is currently a member of the ALP (WA) Administrative Committee and the WA BranchOrganisational Review Committee. Damian currently works for Kim Wilkie MP, the federalMember for Swan.

Michelle Roberts

Michelle is president of the West Australian branchof the Party. Since 1996 she has been the Memberfor Midland; previously she was the Member forGlendalough. She was deputy Mayor of the City ofPerth. Michelle is currently the Shadow Minister forPolice, Crime Prevention and Emergency Services.

Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith has been the federal Member forPerth since 1993 and Shadow Minister forCommunications since October 1998. He wasShadow Minister for Resources and Energy fromMarch 1997 to September 1998 and ShadowMinister for Trade from March 1996 to March 1997.He was chair of the Joint Parliamentary Committeeon Corporations and Securities from 1994 to 1996and has been a member of the Parliamentary JointStanding Committee Foreign Affairs, Defence andTrade, the House of Representatives StandingCommittee on Banking, Finance and PublicAdministration and the House of RepresentativesStanding Committee on Primary Industries,Resources and Rural and Regional Affairs. From1987 to 1990, he was state secretary of the WestAustralian branch of the ALP.

Dean SummersDean is the West Australian assistant state secretaryof the Maritime Union of Australia. A member ofthe West Australian branch of the ALP, he has heldvarious positions on policy committees and hasbeen a member of the administration committee forthe past two years. Dean was a proxy delegate toConference in 1996 and a full delegate in 1998.

Andrew WaddellAndrew joined the ALP in 1988 and helped establishthe Curtin University Branch. He contested thefederal seat of Curtin at the 1998 election and in1999 was elected as a vice president for the WestAustralian Branch of the Party and is currently amember of the Administrative Committee. He wasformerly an industrial officer with the TransportWorkers Union and has been a delegate to the StateExecutive since 1993. He is secretary of theGlendalough Branch and a delegate to the CurtinElectorate Council.

Ruth WebberRuth is assistant state secretary of the WA branchof the ALP. Previously she worked for a number ofstate and federal politicians. She has been amember of the ALP since 1984, and held a numberof positions within local branches and the LaborWomen’s Organisation before being electedassistant state secretary. Ruth also serves on thecommittee of a community based employmentorganisation.
