Alpha Gamma Sigma is the California Community College Scholastic Honor Society. Founded in 1926, AGS has chapters at most community college campuses in the state. The AGS focus is on developing leadership skills, global understanding, and social conscientiousness through campus and community service projects. The Greek Letters in our name were selected because they are the initials from Greek words whose meanings represent the motto of Alpha Gamma Sigma: “Add to good character, knowledge, and judgment.”

It was only a few more days before the start of the repetitive beat of modern music, loud chattering voices of students visiting several clubs or organizations, and energetic vibe of the campus. AGS board members hurried to finish the cupcakes in time, buy suitable decorations and goodies, and develop creative games for students to enjoy. As the early day began, officers and members alike arrived to school, dressed in costumes to the Halloween theme! Board members of AGS wore their vibrant, red shirts and best smiles to present themselves during Coast Day! Members participated in silly games and activities as students came to observe, entertained by the high level of competitiveness.

This was the first board social organized by the Social Events Coordinator since the creation of the AGS Appointed Board this year. The purpose of socials is to have the board members become more comfortable and acquainted with each other. This is important, as they will frequently work together on projects. The board members drove and carpooled to the Roller-skating Ring in the evening, signing in with their advisor. A few who were unable to participate in the ring, entertained themselves conversing.

The fall semester was coming to an end. Students crammed and desperately memorized information to prepare for the upcoming finals. What better way for them to relieve their stress than by coming to a Holiday Party? The Honors Alliance, consisting of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Gamma Sigma, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Honors Student Council, collaborated to create a social event for their members and officers to enjoy. The four presidents welcomed and entertained the members creatively. Everyone participated in the competitive games and activities such as the improvised acting activity or the Ugly Sweater Contest. Participants would strut and dance across the room in their adorable, outdated, colorful sweaters as the beat of the music resonated within the student lounge. Students had the chance to socialize with different members within the honors organization as they feasted on the food already provided. It was a memorable night!

Club Rush on Valentine’s Day? Why not? It might as well be the overall theme! Students were finally adjusting to their schedules in the first few weeks of the spring semester. They came to club rush, observing the activities that buzzed around the early morning. Many organizations and clubs were scattered

throughout the quad, their tables designed to attract potential members. Allured by the exquisite red color of Alpha Gamma Sigma, students visited the table to ask about the qualifications and benefits of membership. Officers handed out brochures and politely answered their questions and concerns before leaving them satisfied with a delicious treat at hand.

The AGS board assembled the first chapter meeting since the start of the spring semester. Students that signed up, declaring their interest in AGS, were able to participate in the opportunity drawing. Officers and board members arrived an hour early before the event, setting up the decorations in the student lounge and preparing the powerpoint. During the meeting, board members were introduced and a few had a chance to present the information to the students. They had an open floor session for students to ask the officers more specific questions regarding membership benefits and qualifications.

The parking was packed as college students and high school seniors crowded to the quad. Festive music and welcoming leaders of clubs and organizations livened the environment. The purpose was to introduce and familiarize the various clubs, honor societies, organizations, and programs of Orange Coast College to interested students that might attend the school in the near future. AGS, along with other honors societies, participated in the event, attracting new members. The theme of Coast Day was the pirates! Officers and board members joined the other clubs in the many competitions and activities that entertained many onlookers!

Not long after Coast/Senior Day, AGS conducted another chapter meeting located in the faculty house during the afternoon. Officers and board members decorated the interior and exterior of the room before the members arrived to the meeting. Not long after, students filled in the faculty house until seats became limited. Important information was delivered to the potential members and everyone had a chance to ask questions regarding AGS membership. While the chapter meeting was productive, students were able to participate in the opportunity drawing to win awesome prizes such as a Starbucks gift card!

April 2-27, 2012

The Veteran Drive lasted for approximately a month as board members worked to publicize this across the campus. The bins were located in plain view at the entrance of the Watson Hall. Students were encouraged to donate in support for the local veterans. AGS only accepted non-perishable food and hygiene items. Students generally brought their donations to the second floor of Watson Hall, room 287, for the offered extra credit slips. The Publicity Coordinator had to frequently empty the bins due to the numerous amount donations made during the month of April.

As a student casually strolled down the middle of the quad, he could see the extravagant designs of various cultures from the multicolored balloons to the flags of many countries. The purpose of this event was to spread the awareness of diversity. Each club or honor society had a choice to choose a country to represent. AGS decided on a small island, Bahrain, which is located near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. Each table had to present information and examples to the observers through several means. Many created poster boards, made ethnic food, or wore cultural attire. AGS offered cultural food to the students and gave out interesting facts of Bahrain, all the while promoting the honors society.
