Ganesha the elephant-deity riding amouse has become one of the commonestmnemonics for anything associated with Hinduism. This not only suggests the importance of Ganesha, butalso shows how popular and pervasive this deity is inthe minds of the masses.

The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha hasan elephantine countenance with a curved trunk andbig ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a humanbeing. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evilsand obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god ofeducation, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact,

Ganesha is one of thefive prime Hindu deities(Brahma, Vishnu, Shivaand Durga being theother four) whose idolatryis g lor i f ied as thepanchayatana puja.

Ganesha's headsymbolizes the Atman orthe soul, which is theultimate supreme realityof human existence, andhis human body signifiesMaya or the earthlyexistence of humanbeings. The elephanthead denotes wisdomand its trunk representsOm, the sound symbol of

cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds agoad, which helps him propel mankind forward on theeternal path and remove obstacles from the way. Thenoose in Ganesha's left hand is a gentle implement tocapture all difficulties.

The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like apen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. Therosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit ofknowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet)he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discoverthe sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears conveythat he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runsround his waist represents energy in all forms. And heis humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, amouse.

The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity,as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Oncegoddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out ofthe dirt of her body and assigned him the task of

guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find astranger denying him access, and struck off the boy'shead in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and tosoothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch thehead of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and broughtback its severed head, which was then attached to thebody of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made himthe leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name'Ganapati'. Shiva also bestowed a boon that peoplewould worship him and invoke his name beforeundertaking any venture.

However, there's another less popular storyof his origin, found in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana:Shiva asked Parvati to observe the punyaka vrata for ayear to appease Vishnu in order to have a son. When ason was born to her, all the gods and goddessesassembled to rejoice on its birth. Lord Shani, the son ofSurya (Sun-God), was also present but he refused to

look at the infant. Perturbed at this behaviour, Parvatiasked him the reason, and Shani replied that hislooking at baby would harm the newborn. However, onParvati's insistence when Shani eyed the baby, thechild's head was severed instantly. All the gods startedto bemoan, whereupon Vishnu hurried to the bank ofriver Pushpabhadra and brought back the head of ayoung elephant, and joined it to the baby's body, thusreviving it.

Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. He is the personification ofmaterial universe in all its various magnificentmanifestations. "He is both the beginning of thereligion and the meeting ground for all Hindus."

The devotees of Ganesha celeberate theShukla Chathurthi in the Tamil month of Avani as afestival to celebrate and glorify him is known asGanesh Chaturthi.

    Ganesha the Lord of Success

Whatever be the political motive behindthe sudden bonhomie between Tamil Nadu andKarnataka with a statue of Tamil saint-poet

Thiruvalluvar being unveiled in Bengaluru 18 yearsafter its installation and that of Kannada poetSarvajna in Chennai four days later, the movetowards reconciliation between the two neighboursdeserves to be welcomed.

However, the two states have had such abitter relationship that mere cultural symbolism mayremain just that if proper follow-up measures are nottaken. With both the DMK and the BJP havingexploited issues of divergence to raisetemperatures on their sides in the past, it makes onewonder whether there is more to the sudden showof love between Chief Minister Karunanidhi of TamilNadu and his Karnataka counterpart B.S.Yeddyurappa than meets the eye.

Recent reports that Mr Karunanidhi isbuilding bridges with the BJP to spite the Congressand to seek to improve his bargaining positionwithin the UPA may well be the motivation for the

move. The wily octogenarian has much to lose bydrifting away from the UPA and this show of love forthe BJP may well be mere tokenism.

In that event, the new-found bonhomiemay stand exposed when the time comes tohammer out a solution to the contentious issue ofsharing Cauvery waters which arouse passions inboth states.

So often in the past, when the differenceson the issue come to the fore, theatres playing Tamilfilms are the target of Kannada protesters inBengaluru and buses from Karnataka are targetedin Tamil Nadu. It would be interesting to see howthings play out this time around.

If the two chief ministers are serious aboutmending fences, they must rise above local politicsand show a spirit of accommodation on the Cauveryissue.

The famed river can be harnessed very

effectively to mutual benefit if this happens. It would be a matter of deep regret indeed

if the current statue swap turns out to be a meremutual exchange of goodwill sans substance.

    When statues help

    Looking backinto the history of nations,one can hardly find them a t c h l e s s

Today we f iourselves dwelling in treward this pledge hgranted us wi th. Tgrandeur of this reward such that every other rewai s s h a d o w e d b y imagnificence, every othbeauty is eclipsed by splendour, every other gloof hope dimmed by radiance.

    Lets pledge...

This is that timeof the year when you findit extremely difficult toresist the temptation to goon a holiday. People youknow are either planninga holiday or alreadypacking their bags. To

    make matters worse,travel agencies and touroperators bombard youwith advertisements ofdream destinations. Youcan opt for the snow-cladmountains, or the sandybeaches, or choose anadventure-filled holiday.You can avail of theinnumerable choicesw i t h i n I n d i a o rabroadthe options areu n l i m i t e d a n d t h epackage offers, alluring.

H o w e v e r ,before you give in to thatwander lust and write outthat cheque to the tour

operator, I would suggestcertain mandatory steps.First and foremost, visitthe Tourism Ministrysw e b s i t e(http://tourism.nic.in),and click on the icon thatsays "approved list". Itopens up a list of travelagents, tour operatorsand even adventure touroperators approved by

the ministry. You get theirtelephone numbers, theiraddresses and their e-mail IDs. So choosethose in your city from thelist and begin from there.

The next step isto compare package

tours, including prices forthe destinations that youhave chosen. You can dothat on the telephone oron e-mail. However, always note the nameand designation of theperson that you haves pok en t o . Th i s i simportant because manytimes, there is a wide gapb e t w e e n w h a t i spromised and what isdelivered. In fact, whenyou finally opt for apackage tour, you mustmake sure that thepromises made verballyare actually in the written

    contract.I s a y t h i s

    because in a casepertaining to a time-shareresort decided by then a t i o n a l c o n s u m e rd i s p u t e s r e d r e s s a lcommission recently, thecompany argued that thepromises made by anemployee, who was theirsales manager, were not

binding on it because itwas not in the writtencontract entered intobetween the parties.Once you have zeroed inon an agencybe it for apackage tour abroad orwithin Indiabe sure to

work out every detail.Let there not beany ambiguity either inthe tour programme or inworking out the cost.Foreign trips, tickets forboat rides, art galleriesand museums are allexpensive. Does thepackage include thosecosts too, or do you haveto pay for them? Do notgo by verbal assurancesand work out the totalc os t , i nc l ud ing t heservice tax. Let there notbe any surprises at a laterstage. Do not be in ahurry to sign on the terms

    and conditions.R e a d t h e m

carefully and ensure thatall travel details are put inwriting. If in case of anunforeseen circumstanceyou are forced to cancelor postpone the trip, make sure that you areentitled to a refund. Socheck the refund policy ofthe company. These

    p r e c a u t i o n s a r eabsolutely necessary toensure that you are nottaken for a ride by the touroperator /travel agent.

Unfortunately, there is no Ombudsmanfor the travel industry. If

tourism is to flourish as anindustry, there should notonly be stringent qualitystandards for all serviceproviders in the sector, but also a system ofOmbudsman to resolvedisputes between clientsand service providers.Cus tomers , in fac t ,should demand this. Butdont lose heart. If yourholiday is ruined becauseof the negligence of thetour operator, or if thepackage tour is not of thes tandard or qual i typromised or advertised, you can always seek

    redress through courts.These forums

may not be as quick asthey were meant to be,but they have come to theaid of tourists who havehad a raw deal, and sentout a clear message tothe tourism industry thatt h e y c a n n o t t a k econsumers for granted
