DESIGNED BY

Welcome to the Alresford Forum. This month we are expanding

our readership into Ropley and Ropley Dean.

Within the pages you will find a monthly recipe, a children’s activity corner (this month is Seashore month!) and we have an injection of humour in the regular diary entry from 'Hampshire Mum'.

We need your help!Do you write? If you feel that

you could contribute an article to the Forum then please call the editor on: 01962 734355, we would be delighted to hear from you. We would like to include a local walk each month and would therefore greatly appreciate help from our readers. Are you a walking organisation? Do you have a favourite local walk? Please send it via email or post and you could see it in print!

Likewise, we would appreciate local photographs from keen photographers that would make an exciting front cover. Do you have an eye for a beautiful picture? If so, please send us your digital files to [email protected]. We can’t guarantee that we will use any of the images sent to us, but if we do, they will be credited on page 3 of the magazine.

The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers. We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale; fete; class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we

welcometo the Alresford Forum

will include it in our News and Events section.

Our websites are now completed and are live. If you would like to read the magazines online simply visit the site and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issue' in the menu bar.

Forum PhilosophyIt’s quite simple really… the

Forum is your magazine, your voice for the local community. We are lucky enough to live in an area with a strong community spirit, but we all know that its continued success relies upon easy and regular communication of everything we need to know. Our local businesses rely on our continued support to prosper and so we seek to keep our advertising rates extremely competitive. For our local clubs and societies to flourish we publish their details and news free of charge. And for those messages to reach as many people in the community as possible we work hard to ensure The Forum is a free magazine.

So we hope you find something of value or something of interest within the pages of The Forum. We are continually developing the magazine and rely on your input to make it work. Let us know what you think, what you’d like to see in The Forum. Working together we can all participate in building a fantastic forum for our local community!

Solar powered cinema a great success at the Alresford Music Festival

Local wildlife consultancy, Herpetologic ltd, was pleased to have

helped bring the smallest solar powered cinema to the first Alresford Music Festival. The ticket collection revealed that over 350 people had gone through the turnstyle which is some feat considering that the cinema only seats 8 adults or 12 children! Inspiring films, cartoons and animations with an environmental theme were shown in 10 minute screenings.

The Alresford Greening Campaign showed their Low Carbon Living Fair

video. Wildlife TV presenter Chris Packham starred alongside local residents in the piece, which was filmed at Perins School on the 27th February 2010 by 'Act on CO2'. Jon Cranfield, MD of the Herpetologic Ltd and member of the Alresford Greening Campaign, said 'The whole day was a wonderful success, with the festival having a really friendly family feel throughout the whole day'. The company supports

environmental causes such as the Hampshire Wildlife Trust and the Alresford Wildlife Group (part of the Alresford Greening Campaign) as part of our environmental policy. Our Company was pleased to help the Alresford Greening Campaign with funding the cinema to ensure that it was free to all festival goers. People do not seem to realise that what we power our homes and other life choices with can have devastating

effects on our local wildlife through climate change.

We thought that a fun and exciting way of promoting recycling, and alternative energy would be to bring the Sol Cinema to the first Music Festival in our town.'

The Sol Cinema tours the UK's local festivals and events showing inspiring films powered entirely by the sun. For more information visit www.thesolcinema.org. Jon Cranfield added 'I would just like to say well done to the organisers of the Alresford Music Festival. They did an excellent job and we would welcome the chance to come to next year's event'.

Citizens Advice Bureau in Alresford

Due to lack of funding the Alresford Outreach Surgery of the

Citizens Advice Bureau closed its doors at the end of 2009. Since then discussions have been held to find ways to re-open and sustain this much needed surgery. The Friends of Alresford Citizens Advice Bureau Outreach (FACABO) has been established to raise and administer funds for the surgery. Approaches are being made to surrounding parishes to grant 25p per elector towards the funding of the surgery. In addition individual and corporate members are being sought to pledge an annual fee of £10 (individual) and £25 or £50 (Corporate). These pledges should be forwarded to Cllr.Jackie Porter at [email protected] . The Voluntary Transport Group is considering committing transport for those who need to use this CAB outreach from all neighbouring villages in order that the service will be totally inclusive.

It is hoped that the outreach surgery will resume this autumn but to achieve this aim a commitment of £4,000 must be achieved for the first year and for the continuance of the service over five years pledges of £5,000 per annum are sought.

The Town Council has supported the outreach surgery with grants for a number of years, most recently £1000 each year, which equates to 25p per elector in the town.

West Street Re-DevelopmentThe Town Council continues to seek funds for the re-development of the south (Co-op) side of West Street. There has been a recent set back in that the new

administration at Winchester City Council (WCC) is reluctant to support the project, whereas the previous Council had indicated it would contribute some £20,000 over two years.

However, following meetings between WCC and Hampshire County Council officers and the Town Council, we now have an agreement that there will be a developer contribution towards town centre highways improvements from all housing developments in the town in the future.

We are disappointed that WCC has chosen not to support us in this project, but the developer contributions should ensure that we are able to keep this project on schedule after all.

Arlebury Park DevelopmentA public meeting was held in July to discuss the proposals for the land adjoining Arlebury Park. As you will have seen seen from the local press, those proposals involve the acquisition of

some 10 acres of recreational land, to include two rugby pitches, in exchange for a small development of about 15 houses to the south of the site.

August Meeting A Full Town Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday 7.30pm 3rd August at the ARC

September Meeting ScheduleSeptember 7th Full Council - 7.30pm ARC. September 14th Planning - 7.30pm ARCSeptember 15th Environment - 7.30pm ARCSeptember 29th Recreation - 7.30pm ARC

This article goes to press before the meeting so details are not available. However, anybody who is unable to attend the meeting may have their views taken into account by writing/e-mailing the Town Clerk (address below).

Members of the public are always welcome to these meetings and there is an opportunity for public participation at the beginning of each meeting.

The photo booth previously located in the Post Office has been re-located to the ARC lobby and is available for public use at any time the building is open.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

Sun Day - A Day of Activities About the Sun

At Intech on Sunday 8th August, have a go at using a variety

of special telescopes and projectors that let you examine the sun in detail. Can you spot a sun-spot? Or see a blast of gas going off into space?

Please don't try this at home: looking directly at the sun with just your eyes can hurt you, but using normal binoculars or a telescope will blind you.

Displays and activities from academics and others make this an all-weather event so come along and discover more about the star that fuels life on Earth:

• Meet real scientists to find out the latest news in solar research• Create sun-inspired artwork• Activities about sun-safety• Capturing the power of the sun: how does it work and what can we achieve?

Meet and chat to highly skilled amateur sun-spotters from astronomy societies and the Sun Worshippers out-reach team, who are all kindly bringing their specialist knowledge and observing equipment to make this event possible.

Joint Effort Brings New Kitchen Units to Winchester Churches Nightshelter

When Winchester Churches Nightshelter realised its

existing kitchen units were no longer up to the job, the task began of finding replacements that would brighten up the workspace and stand up to frequent use in such a busy environment; yet be affordable too for a charity based right in the heart of Winchester.

The answer came in the form of units for the kitchen, breakfast and laundry rooms by The Myers Touch, Kitchen and Interior Design company based in Kings Worthy, coupled with a worktop donated by The Myers Touch customers: Mr and Mrs Rutter of Romsey.

"At the night shelter we provide a number of services such as computer training, counselling and housing advice but meals feature top

Court Palace Flower Show on Monday 5th July. This is the first time the company has exhibited at Hampton Court and the contemporary garden design called ‘The Living Room’ created much interest with its stylish theme of 21st century outdoor living, which is a growing trend in the UK.Managing Director Norman Hambrooks said, “As part of our 40th year celebrations we wanted to mark it with a special event, which began when Hampton Court accepted our design for a show garden. Winning this award is a great achievement

of the priority list for our residents who receive dinner and breakfast as well as a safe place to sleep for the night," says Michele Price, Manager at Winchester Churches Nightshelter. "These new units provide much needed storage space in working areas that get a lot of use. Not only are the units very sturdy but also enhance the environment - the place has been really cheered up! We are so appreciative of this local support for the work we are doing here in Winchester."

Keith Myers of The Myers Touch adds: "Working together in the community brings great results and in this case, along with one of our customers, we were able to put together a solution to meet the needs of the Nightshelter and add to the valuable work they do in reaching out to those who are without a home of their own."

The Myers Touch is a creative architectural and interior design practice that specialises in private and professional kitchen design. With a studio in Kings Worthy, near Winchester in Hampshire, The Myers Touch partners with leading brands such as SieMatic, Gaggenau, Miele, Siemens, Sub Zero and Wolf. Its design practice offers customers a full range of interior and architectural services and recognises that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Based on a foundation of integrity, The Myers Touch is a member of KBSA.

4 hours braised leg of lambMany traditional dishes are slow cooked which gives not only an absolutely delicious flavor, but makes everything very easy on the digestive system.

Preparation : 5 minutescooking : 4 hours

Ingredients• 1 leg of lamb approximately 2.5 kg (can be boned)• 200g sliced carrots• 300g sliced onions• 500g diced tomato (can be canned)• 1 bouquet of finely chopped fresh mint• 1 bouquet garni (thyme, laurel, parsley, 3 clove)

• 1 garlic head cut in half• The juice of 1 lemon (Blanch the zest of the lemon)• A pinch of ground cumin• 30cl beef stock• 10cl olive oil• 10cl cognac• 50cl white wine• Salt & pepper to taste• A small soup spoon of sugar to work against the acidity of white wine and tomato.

Method1. Pre-heat oven 170˚C.2. Pour oil in an oven proof dish (little larger than the leg of lamb) on the stove heating it until very hot. Place the leg of lamb into the dish and brown the lamb quickly making sure all sides of the leg are browned.

Summer Lamb3. Remove the leg of lamb from the dish.4. Add all the other ingredients to the dish, season with the salt and pepper and cover with foil tightly. 5. Let it cook in the oven undisturbed for four hours.

AdviceThe lamb can be served immediately or the next day. Slice it cold as it is much easier and then warm up in the gravy before serving.

If you the meat warm it will be so tender it will fall apart. If you do not have a leg of lamb a rolled shoulder of will be just as good.

You could also “prick” the meat with a sharp small

kitchen knife and push garlic cloves in, to add extra flavour. If you leave the lamb to the next day when the juices are cold you will find it easier to remove the fat and make a delicious sauce.

NB:This lamb dish can be served cold, with a good soup spoon of vinegar, a pinch of sugar a little extra chopped mint in the sauce to make it more tangy.

lAVender seAsonAt long bArn, Alresford

When long barn founder richard norris planted

out some experimental lavender cuttings in a small corner of a field almost fifteen years ago, even in his more extravagant flights of imagination as he stood to ease his aching back, did he envisage the magnificent green oak barn on the old sheep fair from which the business operates today; nor, indeed, the development of our exclusive range of natural skin care and toiletries which contain oil distilled from acres of lavender we grow in nearby owslebury.

We cherish our countryside and believe in supporting the community by sourcing locally; thus we use no chemicals on our plants, no chemical additives in our toiletries and buy from independent local suppliers wherever possible. the barn we occupy was constructed by Hampshire oak framers and we have landscaped the site to encapsulate a haven of natural english countryside to surround our inspirational lavender collection. We are grateful to the Hedgerow trust for supplying us with native hedge plants for this project, which has all lent to encouraging birds, butterflies and bees to come and join us.

today long barn has grown to encompass a lot more

than lavender. to give you a ‘flavour’ of what we are about at the barn, in addition to our toiletries, there is a specialist plant terrace, some delightful wares for your potting shed and garden, naturally fragranced candles and home scents, locally produced speciality foods, and handmade lavender filled pillows, together with reclaimed gardening artefacts which we just can’t resist.

We are eager to see traditional english country crafts survive and you will discover locally made hurdle fencing, a straw bale walled courtyard and beautiful craftsman-made garden tools when you come to visit us.

there are a variety of complementary activities hosted at the barn, all to reflect the rhythm of the seasons. We commenced the gardening year with a seed potato day, enabling gardeners to choose from unusual varieties like ‘pink fir Apple’, when we served seasonal soup and

potato scones. richard and Alaster Anderson (of ‘living leaves’) are running a popular series of kitchen gardening lessons at the barn on a monthly basis, and continuing the horticultural theme our talented local florist, natasha thomas, is a popular visitor when she runs themed flower workshops like christmas wreath making, or children’s posies for Mothers’ day.

As mentioned already, we are developing the site not only as a fitting backdrop to the magnificent barn and lavender collection, but also to recreate a scene which represents the english countryside at its quintessential best, to be offset by a traditional straw bale walled lavender courtyard garden. Wild flower borders abound and we are currently developing a kitchen garden (with input from our garden school pupils) and preparing for the most important part of the year for us – the lavender season.

Hampshire Mum's Diary

Ah, the delights of the last seven weeks of term; that relaxing countdown to the

summer holidays.

The teachers seem to relish their revenge upon you for your children’s misdemeanours over the year: “Oh now, Mrs Pagan, Star II is playing third aardvark in the ‘Leavers’ Production’ and he will also be the roller skating giraffe in the finale, isn’t that lovely?! Costumes in by Monday please. And we wondered it you could kindly provide four litres of squash, no additives, and sixty-four little cakes, but without the ‘England’ logo this time please. Fantastic, thanks.”

And that’s aside from the anxiety regarding SATs results and the final school report where under the Tipp-ex you’re sure you can read the words ‘pond life’ in the comments box.

It’s at that point the Husband, having caught me breathing

into a brown paper bag, gently suggests we should have a chilled-out, stress free day: “We’ll go to the Alresford Music Festival, it’ll be great.”

So it was that the Pagan family went hippy (chic, obviously) for the day, equipping ourselves with all the festival necessities: picnic, money, sun block, rugs, blankets, beads (re: appropriate jewellery) and the obligatory floaty scarf . We were right there... man.

Star I , an electric guitar-wielding rock god wannabe, immediately adapted to the ‘fest’ habitat and disappeared to mingle, sorry, hang out, with his mates, returning occasionally to grunt at us when food and drink were required.

Star II was beyond excited to be at his ‘first EVER concert’ and, thanks to the wonders of Herras fencing, found himself safely corralled and free to explore the delights of circus

Hampshire Mum's Diary

skills, the mini cinema and blue candyfloss. And, despite his tender years, he displayed all the attributes of a festival veteran with his own strange dance homage to rock. As the lead singer belted out a tune with serious gusto, one had to wonder if he could actually see Star II and his little friend doing roly-poly’s and impressions of what looked to be crabs (albeit with great rhythm) just below his feet.

I feared Security might be called, but all was well.

The excellent music and slick production changes between the two stages went seamlessly on through the day, past sunset and into the night. The crowd were on their feet in an atmosphere Glastonbury would have been proud of. Although past his bedtime, Star II was still going strong and bedecked as he was in glow sticks of various hues, was easy to spot as he rampaged around in the background.

The Husband’s bedtime had also been surpassed, but the excesses of the beer tent had a rejuvenative effect upon him, and, keen to relive his youth he announced, “I’m off to the mosh pit Sandra, going to embarrass the kids.” “Err, ok love.”

According to Star I and his mates he did so, brilliantly. Nothing like a bit of Dad’s dancing!

The crowd yelled out for more and the fantastic final act were happy to oblige, then it was the chilly walk home with Star II still glowing beneath his blanket, whilst the Husband and Star I talked rifts, lead breaks, folk , blues and prog rock.

For a change, it had been a fabulous stress-free Pagan family outing, definitely to be repeated.

Now, where did I put that aardvark costume...

under 18’s and feel the rush! With music, dance and creative workshops for all ages, there’s a huge range of activities to get involved in.

This summer, be prepared as the Tower Arts Centre, Winchester Discovery Centre and the Theatre Royal will be parachuting into the city centre as the Freefall Arts Festival for children touches down in August.

Between the 2nd and the 22nd August, the Festival will be providing summer activities for children of all ages, culminating in an outdoor performance weekend in the centre of Winchester. The three venues are combining their summer arts activities this year under the banner of the Freefall Festival and specific details about the workshops are being released soon.

The Freefall Arts Festival will be offering many different workshops for the under 18s; promoting creativity and fun over the summer holidays. Workshops will be based at the Tower, Theatre and Discovery Centre and the final week of activities will be based on the field at River Park leisure centre. Young people will be encouraged to perform the skills they will learn during the workshops to families, friends and others on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August.

The Festival is being supported by Winchester City Council, the Round table and the Winchester’s

Business Improvement District and will be working with local business and schools during the festival to ensure an exciting August for all.

So if you want to dance, play in a band, perform, create stories, paint, sing or simply spill out your energy and creativity, get involved in Freefall.

Art Exhibition21st to 30th August 2010

For the last four years the Monday Painters have taken part in the

Hampshire Open Studios activities. They have held very successful summer exhibitions at the Christy Hall in Old Alresford.

Sadly there are no Open Studios this year. However, the Monday Painters thrive. They will still hold an August Exhibition, but on a very different site. Come along and see their work in the most novel setting; join them amongst the lavender fields. The exhibition this year is at Long Barn, Alresford, on the Bishop Sutton road. It is open from 21st to 30th August, from 10am to 4pm daily. It’s free and, what’s more, there’s plenty of parking.

Do you think that Twenty/20 cricket is just TOO SLOW!?

Then you should enjoy the Five/5 competition at the Cricket, Beer & Balloon Festival in Cheriton on August Bank Holiday Monday!

The annual Cheriton 6-a-side Cricket Tournament will again take place on Monday 30th August. The prestigious tournament – played every year since ‘94 – is played from 9am to dusk. In all 8 teams are featured. Joining the hosts Cheriton are local neighbours Tichborne Park, Ropley, and Bishop’s Waltham, together with holders Hambledon and their Southern League rivals Fair Oak, Ventnor and new guests St Cross. The colourful cricket is non-stop, with 12 games in the league stage followed by knock-out semi-finals and the grand final around 6.30 pm. All matches are of five overs a side – one bowled by each of the out fielders. Last year well over 1400 runs were scored!

Entrance is free and attractions at the Recreation Ground include a beer tent, BBQ, tea and cakes, children’s play area and free parking. Throughout the weekend the Flower Pots Inn, conveniently located opposite the picturesque ground, will again hold its’ annual Beer Festival, including live

What are the benefits of Solar PV?• Significantly reduced energy bills• Can save over 1200kg of CO2 emissions per year• Reliable• Economic• Products approved for low carbon building programme funding• Sell excess energy to the grid for above market rates via National Feed-in Tariff

Save and Earn with Solar PV Panels

Why would I install Solar PV panels?Solar energy is the most abundant, quiet and reliable source of free, clean electricity for households and businesses alike.

The photovoltaic industry currently generates a relatively small part of the total renewable energy supply, less than wind, hydro power or biomass but it has the most potential. The increasing demand for PV has seen the market doubling in size every two years, making it the world's fastest growing energy technology. New government directives make Solar PV a fantastic way to reduce your energy bills and create income at the same time.

What is the Feed-in Tariff?Feed-in Tariffs (clean energy cashback) became available in great Britain from the 1st April 2010. Under this scheme energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources such as solar electricity (PV) panels.
