Bible Talks at New Farm Chapel

this is a subject close to my heart. It’s not to say that I never eat

sugar! Of course I do. But I get frustrated with the way sugar is hidden in the foods we buy, therefore taking away our ability to choose when, and how much of it we want to eat or feed to our children. It also concerns me that many low fat

Nutrition Bites: Do you know how much sugar you put in your trolley each week?

products, which people buy in order to lose weight, actually contain a lot of sugar. Sugar in fact makes us fat and can make us ill! Did you know that a 0%Activia yogurt contains 3 tsp sugar, 1 serving Kellogs Special K contains 3 tsp sugar, and a Tesco light choice sweet and sour chicken oriental rice contains 6tsps sugar!

So what’s the science behind it? Sugar doesn’t need to be broken down and is taken straight into our blood stream. If this sugar is excess to our immediate requirements it needs to be stored. If our liver glycogen stores are full, then the sugar is dumped into our fat cells. Additionally sugar intake stimulates the release of insulin. Insulin is the hormone required to transport the sugar into our cells for use.

It’s a vital hormone for life but if constantly being released can cause numerous problems leading to type II diabetes, weight gain, raised cholesterol to name just a few.

There are a number of simple ways you can cut down on your sugar, curb sugar cravings and rebalance your energy levels by changing your foods. However looking past the advertising and checking the labels for sugar content is a really good start and will be of immediate benefit to your health.

Alresford Surgery NewsPatient Hospital TransportSome patients may be eligible for non-emergency patient transport services (PTS). These services provide free transport to and from hospital appointments for people who have a medical need for it. If a patient does qualify for hospital transport we at the surgery can only book this for the first outpatient appointment, thereafter the hospital must make the booking.

To qualify for non-urgent transport a patient must:• Requireastretcheror the support of two or more ambulance personnel, OR• Requiretoliedownforpart of the journey, OR• Havenoalternativemeansof private transport (car, friends, family, community scheme or taxi) and has a condition that would make them a risk to themselves or others or compromise their dignity by using public transport, OR• Havenomeansofprivate transport as described above and uses a wheelchair or walking aid AND is unable to transfer into a car or taxi.

Given these strict guidelines we anticipate that very few patients will meet these criteria. Unfortunately patient transport is not available if a patient is unable to afford the cost of public transport or a taxi. If a patient receives certain benefits they may be entitled to financial help with the cost of getting to a hospital appointment under the Healthcare Travel Costs

Scheme. Most hospitals have a Cashier's desk where refunds can be requested.

Communication with PatientsAt the end of 2012 we carried out a patient survey on the subject of communication with patients. The results of the survey were discussed by the Patient Forum who recommended some action points for us to address:

• Publishinformationtohelp patients get the best from their surgery, particularly in terms of seeing the most appropriate clinician at the most appropriate time in order to improve continuity of care.• Widenthedistributionof paper copies of the newsletter• Re-recordthetelephone message using a shorter message and a female voice• Keeppatientsbetterinformed about doctors and nurses running late during surgeries• Re-publishinformationabout 28 day prescribing• Purchaseascreenforthe waiting room to provide health information and surgery news.• Doctorstoreviewtheuse of courtesy titles when calling patients from the waiting room

We are pleased to report that all points have now been addressed and a new information screen has been installed in the waiting room.

Team Cherry Tree hits the road for Relocation Fund

Parents and relatives of Cherry Tree Pre-School (Kathryn Vaughan,

Richard Townsend, James Chaplin and Gideon Wilson) successfully completed the Winchester 10k Road Race yesterday and in the process

raised around £600 for the pre-school’s Relocation Fund. Now in its 31st year, the team ran the outskirts of Winchester in this popular annual event.

The Relocation Fund was launched by George

Hollingbery, MP for Meon Valley in March 2012. The pre-school, which currently operates from the Cheriton Village Hall is looking to relocate to the former Cheriton Scout Hut, located at the Cheriton Recreational Ground. The fundraising target for the project has been set at £30,000, with the aim of opening the new setting this April.

George Hollingbery said: “It is very encouraging to see a community-led pre-school being so proactive in securing its future success and the wellbeing of its children. They have a lot of money to raise but I’m very confident that the people and businesses of Cheriton and the surrounding communities will play their parts in reaching this target.”

Caroline Sorgi, chair of Cherry Tree Pre-school, said: “We are looking forward to celebrating a new chapter in the life of Cherry Tree and will soon be in a position to provide a building to match the excellence of our

staff and service. The Early Years Foundation Stage (the curriculum followed by all pre-schools) encourages maximum use of outdoor areas because research has demonstrated that fresh air and natural light can dramatically enhance a child's educational experience. What better way to realise this than have a vast amount of open space right on our door-step. Many thanks to team Cherry Tree on what was a very cold morning - it will give our fundraising a much needed boost.”

For anybody who would like to make a donation relating to the Winchester 10k Road Race in aid of the Relocation Fund, please visit the pre-school’s Justgiving page www.justgiving.com/teams/cherrytree10k

For more information on Cherry Tree Pre-School please email [email protected] or visit www.cherrytreepreschool.org

Alresford Town Youth Football Club was established over 30 years ago and has grown with the community. It has always been a locally run club for local children and this year has been successful in being awarded charter standard by the FA.

The FA charter standard programme supported by McDonald's is a kite mark, which recognises and rewards high quality levels of provision in club and league football. The

kite mark is awarded to clubs and leagues that are well run, sustainable, which place child protection, quality coaching and safety paramount.

There will be information available on the day about our club for those interested in joining us in the future. Alresford Town Youth football club currently have 10 teams across the age groups (under 8s to under 18s) competing in league football. We also hold regular fun football sessions for ages 4-6. We are extremely proud to have two girls' teams playing competitive football with a further two entering next season to meet demand.

faced the daunting challenge of Portsmouth Grammar School who had won the four previous U15 Cup finals, but approached the task in hand with confidence following a victory over their

As part of our

opponents earlier in the season in the Daily Mail Vase.

From the outset the Perins boys played with composure and fierce determination. The Perins pressure was finally converted to points when slick handling from one side of the pitch to the other released Ed King down the left wing. The quick, stocky winger utilised his attributes to the full and blasted past three potential tacklers to score in the left hand corner, sparking chants of “beast" (his rugby nickname), from the band of excited Perins supporters.

This first score boosted confidence levels further and sparked the full squad into 40 minutes of intensely passionate, committed and skilful rugby. The ferocity of Matt Iddeson, Myles FitzPatrick, Ciaran Young and Alex Beanland at the breakdowns ensured that Perins had a constant supply of possession and two further tries came before half time from Dean Griffin and Angus Kennedy. The intense competitiveness from one to fifteen was maintained into the second half and six more tries were scored by Jamie

Pakenham-Walsh, Doug Wicks, Oli Pratt, Jack Saunders and Ed King (x 2). Captain and play maker, Doug Wicks converted five of the tries. The scorers clearly played a significant part in the victory, but the key factor in the win was the tremendous team spirit displayed by the entire squad (playing and non-playing) throughout the season and in the match particularly. The relentless tenacity exhibited from the first second through to the very last from every player was the fundamental reason that the final score stood at Perins 55 - PGS 0.

The Perins Squad was Matt Iddeson, Ciran Young, Henry Jaynes, Myles Fitzpatrick, Jack Saunders, Oli Pratt, Alex Beanland, Angus Kennedy, Dean Griffin, Doug Wicks, Ed King, Basty Forman, Jamie Pakenham Walsh, Joe Eller, Ben O’Connor, Lewis Tett, George Baggalay, Gabriel Jacobs, James Garnett, Josh Saunders and Max Rhodes.

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

Rotary - Springing into Action!

As the bulbs show some signs of Spring along The Avenue, Rotarians are leaping into action in many different ways – with activities close to home, and also with other projects responding

where help is needed most.

The funds that the club raises through its events through the year, all go to charitable causes. In February 2008, we had a raffle at the Quiz Night at Itchen Abbas Village Hall where we raised funds for a young Philipino boy called Paulo who has a life threatening heart condition. His mother Chita works, at the care home in Old Alresford, doing as many shifts as she can to bring Paulo to the UK for the best treatment, you may have seen her round the town without realising who she is. We raised £400 and reserved the money to be available as soon as it was needed, once Paulo was in England. It has taken her over 4 years but Paulo is now living here in Alresford. He has been referred to Great Ormond Street and starts treatment in March.

Our Annual Christmas Tree Sale provided enough funding for the club to finance two Shelterboxes. The £1200 contribution allows for more aid to the desperately poor and homeless refugees from the Syrian conflict. If you would like to help, details are in last month's Forum, viewable on line, or contact the club directly.

A contribution of £250 Rotary made recently to the Town Trust should help with the maintenance of the Minibus, used heavily by Rotary, the Pigs and many other organisations within the town.

Valentine’s Day was the occasion chosen by Perins School to stage the final Alresford round of the 2013 Rotary Young Chef Competition. Working in small groups after school, fourteen students from Year 7 to Year 9 demonstrated their skills in creating a splendid two-course meal. The challenge was to produce in one and a half hours a main course and dessert. Planning and timing skills, hygiene and neatness, food temperature and presentation were all tested in the competition. The overall standard, creativity and quality of the meals were of the highest standard. The eventual winners were Becky Knight, Emelyn Autor-Nilssen, Charlotte Sandell and Poppy Hines who produced a spinach, ricotta and pine nut Filo pastry pie with heart shaped mini lemon meringue pies as desserts. The judges, from Rotary’s Youth Activities team, found it hard to mark the entrants in view of the consistently high standard shown by them all. They felt the winning team produced a meal that used a good combination of ingredients, was well balanced and attractively presented. The judges thanked Miss Gibbs and Miss Bissett of Perins for their dedicated support in coaching the students to produce such excellent results.

Try not to get too stressed if you’re accosted by Rotarians outside the Swan on Saturday April 20th. Every year an estimated 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. That's one person every five minutes. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies. Last year in the UK, Rotarians have helped to potentially save thousands of lives by contributing to the organisation of over 900 "Know Your Blood Pressure" events, checking the blood pressure of over 30,000 people, referring over 4,000 people for a follow up with their GPs.

This year, John Parrington’s team will be offering passers-by on West Street the chance to have their blood pressure checked by medical staff from the Alresford Surgery, working, for that morning, in the hospitable Swan Hotel’s dining room. An event which the club has run for many years, each time highlighting, for many people, that they need to visit their GP as the results show the need for further examination.

After Rotary held another successful Annual Quiz in March, two pupils from Perins are running one of their own on Friday 26th April in the school Dining Hall. Lydia Glass & Victoria Smith have been selected to go to South Africa as volunteers to help building work at a school in conjunction with the Rotary Club. The girls would like to invite supporters to a fundraising Quiz Night with Fish & Chips supper (bring your own drink). Doors open at 7pm for 7.30 pm start. The teams can be between 4 and 8 (adults only). The cost will be £8.50. There will also be a raffle with many prizes. You can buy tickets at Perins School office, Lydia, Victoria or Mrs Aynsley.

Don’t forget the Alresford 10k Run is on Sunday June 16th, after which you can relax and Race a few Ducks!

Find out more about Rotary, what it does, and how to become a member, at our website www.alresfordrotary.co.uk or, to get help, email us at [email protected]

Councillor VacanciesAn election has been called for the 2 New Alresford Town Councillor vacancies. Application forms for this position can be obtained from Winchester City Council, Returning Officer, Electoral Services Unit, City Offices, Colebrook Street, Winchester SO23 9LJ. Nomination papers will be accepted after 25 March 2013 but no later than noon on Friday 5 April 2013.

Rugby PitchesThe Rugby Club have now put forward detailed plans for the pitches on the west field at Arlebury Park. To provide two high quality, level pitches there is a need to use both the purchased land and 40% of the leased land at the bottom of the field. There will be discussions with Winchester City Council and the Rugby Club, as well as potential funders, before it will be clear if this is possible. The Town Council discussed this at its meeting on 14th March; for an update see the Town Council website.

Local plan needs GroupHaving taken on board the amplified guidance provided by Winchester City Council at the public meeting in Alresford on 23 January, the Council decided to deploy its resources more effectively. Four Councillors have taken chairmanship of the required “Needs Groups” and others are supporting them with the benefit of their experience in planning, coordination, and communications.

The four Needs Groups have set to work with a will and Winchester City Council officers have very kindly supported the meetings, bringing valuable data and knowledge of the process to the table. The Infrastructure Group has met twice and the others once each, though The Employment Group is planning to meet again on 3 April (at the time of writing, this is planned to be held in the Old Chapel in The Dean at 7.30 pm but please check the website for changes). There has been excellent participation by townspeople, some with a general interest in the work of the groups and some with particular skills and experience to offer.

There is not enough space here to do justice to the findings so far but links to these can be seen on the web site at http://www.newalresfordtc.org.uk/townplan.php. Although a lot of work has been done already, there will be more opportunities for Alresford residents and indeed, our friends who live in neighbouring villages, to contribute. We are arranging a public meeting at which we shall report the findings of the Needs Groups (see notice). This will give attendees a chance to see the big picture

We all love dancing really. You can see it in small

children, whether boy or girl, they just love dancing to music. Fondly we remember all the dancing we used to do, when we were younger and how much we enjoyed it. How wonderful would it be, if we could do that again...

And here we are – we can do it again. We can dance again to our heart’s delight. Zumba Gold provides all the Dancing Fun we could wish for and the great thing is, you don’t need a partner to do it. Although it is a wonderful thing to do with your partner as well, some partners simply don’t share our love for dancing most of the time, only because they feel self conscious doing it.

Zumba Gold is the low impact version of the very popular Zumba Dance Fitness with all the Party Fun.

The word “Zumba” has derived from the Latin American expression “Rumba” which means Party. Zumba is Latin American Dance Fitness to highly infectious Latin American Music and it has become a worldwide success. Although the dances are predominately Latin American, the recommended ratio is 70% Latin American & 30% Other World Dances.

Max and Silvia introduced Zumba to Winchester in 2010 and their classes became an instant hit with everyone. Their Zumba Classes are high energy dance classes, so when Zumba Gold came

Do you love dancing?to the market, they jumped at the opportunity to train as Zumba Gold Instructors as well, to make Zumba available for truly everyone, even if you have never danced in your life before.

“We tend to call it our “dancier” version of Zumba®. Thanks to the fact that Zumba Gold Dance Classes are lower impact, they offer a huge variety of Dances such as Tango, Flamenco, Mambo, Cha Cha, Belly Dancing, Salsa, Swing, Bollywood and many more. Nowhere else are you able to find such a huge variety of Dances in just one Dance Session. We are dancing 11 different dances at every Zumba Gold Class.

We absolutely love our Zumba Gold Classes. The music and the dances are just amazing and we are looking forward to our classes every single week.”

Silvia & Max are offering two Zumba Gold Classes per week:Mon 18.45-19.30 Winchester Discovery Centre SO23 8SBFri 11.30-12.15 Studio 2, River Park Leisure Ctr SO23 7DD

So come and join Silvia & Max at their Zumba Gold® Dance Classes and have the time of your life staying fit and healthy!

Wildflower planting is on the agenda in many villages in

the Itchen Valley division this month, but we already have the most spectacular display at the Ladycroft roundabout just south of Alresford. The roundabout and verges there produce the most stunning display from Spring until late Summer, despite (perhaps because of?) the County Council’s cutting regime.

This year many communities are planting wildflowers – do you have a spot where there is a special patch that needs more care? Please let me know.

As household budgets are hit hard, there will be families who find life difficult. Please remember that there is a bookable CAB service in Alresford on Monday afternoons- available for all who live in the area- not just

Jackie’s County Corner in Alresford. Call 01962 848000 and you can ask specifically for an Alresford appointment. Help is also available if your power bills are more than 10% of your income. You can call your energy provider direct to ask for a social tariff or contact 0800 804 8601 for general advice. This applies to Water bills too.

The 67 bus is a popular service but only operates three hourly on a Saturday. The Operator, Velvet Travel has offered to provide a two hourly service, but the County thinks there are problems with this because it risks the viability of the early bus- what do you think? We would all appreciate your views.

The rush of applicants to spend the last few pounds of the County Councillor’s Budget included Alresford applicants. Thank you for your interest in this scheme which will start again in June 2013. You can see more about the scheme by going to the HCC link on my website www.jackieporter.mycouncillor.org.uk This money is devolved to each County Councillor to be shared out within the division. So, please-put your thinking hats on for future years!

Finally, the cycling agenda has come up many times but my involvement with WAAFA (Winchester Area Access For All) revealed a deep fear of cyclists who are unaware of the impact they have cycling past or behind those who cannot move very fast, or hear or see them easily. I am pleased that the Road Safety Council in Hampshire has now included a specific module on this in the new cycling proficiency test- called Bikeablity. This will mean that now, young people will be aware of this fear right at the start of their biking life. A good result!

Steve Brine M.Pvideo-link at the city council’s excellent ‘Business in the 21st Century’ conference and said; “The Council understands that Winchester's future is about encouraging companies to invest, to create jobs and to foster innovation and skills. Invest in Winchester: it's a great place to do business and it's a great place for the future."

The conference, held at the Intech Science Centre, was organised to show how Winchester is working with Government to make this a great place to start a business and to run one. And Mr Osborne was backed-up by the Business Secretary, Vince Cable who was here last month to address a banking conference at the Guildhall. Dr Cable complimented the Council on its ambition to be a catalyst for the local economy saying its actions were ‘music to my ears’ and calling WCC an ‘enterprising local authority’ which ‘used its own initiative’.

These are of course only words but they are being backed up by actions and it is no accident that our economy has created more than one million private sector positions in the past three years and Winchester is definitely playing its part in our long road to economic recovery which is music to the ears of this MP I can tell you!

Finally for this time, readers will know of my work in the field of breast cancer since becoming a Member of Parliament. The All-Party Group, which I chair alongside Lib Dem Annette Brooke and Labour’s Sharon Hodgson, will be holding a major inquiry into older people with the disease this month. You can find all the details via my new – and dedicated - breast cancer pages at www.stevebrine.com/breastcancer.

Lots more going on - in Winchester and in Westminster – and you can catch-up on much of it via my main site at www.stevebrine.com.

Last month I hosted a really interesting meeting in Parliament with the Prime

Minister and Prof Khalid Aziz from Winchester’s well-known and high-profile charity, Naomi House. The debate around the funding of children’s hospices is one the PM knows well and he was extremely receptive to our delegation (which included the Salisbury MP John Glen) and our arguments. Our aim was to explain how Naomi House is funded but above all to argue for a unified national model for children's hospice funding in the UK that puts their public funding on a par with counterparts in the adult hospice network.

The PM’s comment to us after the meeting was simple and direct, saying; “I totally get this. I will write to the healthcare commission and suggest they take up this model immediately. I see no reason to delay." We await the reply with great interest as do many people working in the child hospice movement across England. While we wait it was a pleasure recently to visit Jacks Place at Naomi House (the brilliant new facility for young adults with life limiting conditions) and meet properly with the new Chief Executive Chris Robinson who is now fully settled in his role and doing really well from what I observed.

In my last column for FORUM Magazine, I advertised my Alresford street surgery which is now in its seventh year. Cllr Ernie Jeffs, Acting Chair of New Alresford, Town councillor (Lisa Griffiths) braved some fairly chilly temps on Saturday 2nd March and it was great to be joined again by some of the neighbourhood policing team. Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to stop and chat.

I have spoken a fair bit lately about the local business community and since then we have had some heavyweight endorsement from two of the biggest figures in this coalition Government. Chancellor George Osborne appeared on

Back in March 2012 the Alresford & Itchen Valley Forum reported

the arrival of a new home care provider for the Alresford area, Bluebird Care. Bluebird Care’s aim was to become the best quality provider of home care in Alresford, employing local people in order to help and support local people to remain independent in their own homes.

One year on and the care company established by local Alresford couple Norman & Claire Murphy celebrated its 1st year anniversary this month. Norman Murphy, Managing Director said: “We are delighted to have helped over 150 customers remain independent in their own homes with the care they receive from us. We are a family company and family is at the heart of everything we do, so when we set up Bluebird Care we made clear from the start that we want our customers to receive the same level of care that we would expect for our own relatives”.

One happy customer, Mrs Doreen Johnson recently wrote about the care her 100 year old Mother, Mrs Irene Elliott, who lives in Alresford, experiences from Bluebird Care: “I'd like to say I am so glad I have Bluebird Care caring for my Mother. Without them she would definitely be in a care home by now and not in the home she loves and has lived in for over 25 years. Your staff and services have been the best I've ever come across. Mum genuinely looks forward to seeing her Care Workers, Julie & Georgina and they really go the extra mile looking after her”.

Could Bluebird Care help you or a loved one?...Bluebird Care’s services include helping its customers with a variety of tasks including personal care, domestic help, shopping trips out, assistance with medication and help with mobility issues. In addition to traditional care, they provide companionship services and consider a game of dominos, a trip to the pub or helping with the daily crossword as being just as important to improve people’s quality of life. Bluebird Care’s Care Workers also support people with end of life care in their own homes to

enable them to be surrounded by their family and friends.

Local Carers caring for local peopleClaire Murphy said: “It gives us great satisfaction not only to be able to provide care, but also offer career opportunities to local people who are equally passionate about helping others in the community.”

Bluebird Care, Care Worker, Julie Rivers from Alresford agrees: "Working for Bluebird Care has been one of the best experiences. I knew before applying that

the company had a great reputation and now I know why. Everyone is so friendly and the support, monitoring and training opportunities for Care Workers is exceptional. My job is always interesting, sometimes funny or sad, challenging and often demanding, but is always rewarding”.

Career opportunities in CareDo you want to become part of the Professional Bluebird Care Team? Bluebird Care is always looking for dedicated caring individuals to join their growing team. No experience is necessary as full training is given.

Litter: a response to a reader’s letter

In the March issue of the Forum an Alresford resident wrote a letter expressing concerns about the amount of litter to be found on and adjacent to the playing fields at Perins school and its potential

to cause health and environmental problems. Within the letter was the suggestion that the litter builds and builds during term time and that the school caretakers’ are failing to tackle the problem. And also, that we adults should instil in our young, a sense of pride and responsibility for our shared surroundings, to include not littering.

All of which is true. Although in the defence of the school’s caretakers they may well be simply too busy in a school of that size to deal with the litter problem effectively.

The world is divided into two halves: those that litter, whether they be the youth in our schools, the drivers that throw their food wrappers from their car windows, the fly tippers that dump washing machines, tyres etc; industrial litterers who swill out ships’ tanks or dump chemicals miles out to sea. And those that refuse to take their dogs’ faeces home so leave them, sometimes in large numbers, in bags by the side of the path or simply stubbornly refuse to pick up after their dogs at all.

And then there are those that absolutely wouldn’t consider littering at any age under any circumstances - never have, never will.

Litter comes in many guises, but what are we to make of the issue raised by our Alresford resident?

Where and how does this difference in attitude begin? It’s interesting that in the Early Years, Infant and Junior education here in Alresford (and presumably therefore nationally) the issue of sustainability is an important part of the curriculum.

Children are taught about recycling, they are provided with separate bins in the classrooms for paper and

plastics, and in the playground also via which their fruit snacks are collected for composting. For many, thanks to the ethos of their parents, sustainability and recycling are engrained.

Yet, for some, all this is forgotten, thrown out of the window if you like, once they go into a senior school. Here in the infant and junior schools the meals are brought in on a daily basis and packed lunches are eaten in the dining hall. Whereas in the senior school there is a canteen for food some of which is eaten in and some is ‘Takeaway’, plus the students can go into town to buy additional food before school. So there’s more food and drinks being consumed on the hoof.

There are rubbish bins on site at Perins providing adequate opportunity to do what we are meant to do – put the rubbish in them, however clearly it’s not working.

So does the school have a Sustainability Policy that includes encouraging students to recycle their rubbish? Are there bins provided for the separation of plastics/ paper/cardboard/glass/foodstuffs? Can the school afford to pay for its collection? Are there posters around the campus extolling the virtues of recycling?Should it really be the job of the caretakers to pick up the mess left by students? Could there be inter school competitions for the cleanest campus through Social Media – Twitter that litter?

Has the current senior school curriculum abandoned the teaching of sustainability for teenagers when it’s their future that will be affected by such neglect?

Maybe they could make a start the old fashioned way, once a month the whole school gets to pick up its rubbish during lunchtime; a salutary lesson but one worth learning.

What do you think?GG.

between 12-19th September, depending on weather conditions.

No stranger to charity fund raising, Lou cycled through the Himalayas for Mencap in 2000 and hopes to raise £10,000 to share between her chosen charities. Her local charity is Home-Start Winchester and Districts which supports families with children under five in the Winchester area, whose volunteers provide a listening ear and practical advice to help them cope with problems like multiple births, post-natal depression, bereavement, mental or physical disability of either parent or child, or a lack of parenting skills.

Lou is also backing the Friends of the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra to raise funds to support young musicians, buy music, and maintain and transport instruments. Her third charity is Wellbeing of Women, a charity dedicated to improving the health of women and babies across the UK, which each year invests in special research projects towards the training of specialist doctors and midwives. Lou first got the swimming bug while pregnant with daughter Charlie, but lane swimming and even circuits of large lakes felt like going nowhere. “I think the Channel has always been in my mind,” says Lou, who happily swam in the Atlantic alongside a yacht which husband-to-be Simon was skippering for delivery to the Caribbean. “The best thing about swimming in the ocean is the feeling of freedom.”

Used to sporting challenges, Lou already has seven

September, every Sunday she leaves her Swarraton home and heads to the beach at Boscombe to swim in the sea - come rain, snow, hail and wind - all winter long, with no wetsuit to protect her from the freezing water.

It’s all to build up a tolerance to cold water for the English Channel and Lou (50) grabs every cold water training opportunity that comes her way. In January she competed in the Cold Water Swimming Championships in London, where she swam in water that was only just above freezing (1.5°C). Unable to get to the sea in the recent bad weather, the next best thing was for Lou put on her swimsuit and do some snow angels in her garden and she’s planning a dip in the Itchen in Winchester with some fellow winter swimmers.

The Channel swim will be completed in relay with five other swimmers, all members of The Seabrook Seals, based near Boscombe. The crossing will be attempted under strict Channel Swimming Association rules, which means no wetsuits, and the crossing will take place

Marathons under her belt, three Iron Man Triathlons (each comprising over two miles of swimming, 112 miles of bike riding, followed by a Marathon). A runner and athletics coach with Winchester and District Athletics Club and a sports massage therapist, Lou is well placed to know how to prepare for such gruelling adventures.

In the summer Lou and her fellow Seabrook Seals swim for up to three hours, but sea temperatures of 5C mean swim times are slashed to 10 or 15 minutes in the winter.

Says Lou, “The hardest part of the training isn’t the swimming, but learning to deal with the cold water. Getting in is hard enough with the hyperventilation and cold shock response, but your skin then burns for

the next 15 minutes. When you get out you have about seven minutes before you start to shiver uncontrollably as the cold blood from your extremities trickles back into your core – a really vile sensation. So aspects of winter swimming are definitely uncomfortable but once you’ve warmed up you feel amazingly good!”

Find out more about Lou at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LouWalker where you can follow her build up for the big event or sponsor her charities.

The Alresford Museum, run by the New Alresford Town Trust, has updated

the exhibits on view in their display cabinet in the Alresford Library: this now features various storage jars, flagons and bottles - as used by the breweries and businesses in Alresford over the years. Prominent amongst this display are stone and glass bottles bearing the name of Batchelor’s Soft Drinks, of Alresford and Alton. Frederick Charles Batchelor established this business in Alresford in the 19th Century, and in fact his ginger beer won a Gold Medal at the Great British Brewer’s Exhibition of 1901.

Mr Batchelor always claimed that his ginger beer tasted so good because of his secret recipe: in fact it is still a secret, because he didn’t even tell his family, and took it to his grave! It has always been assumed that the secret was in using the pure chalk-fed water from the local springs around Alresford, but he won the medals to justify the claims!

Operating from Broad Street, Batchelor’s lemonade, mineral waters and ginger beer was delivered in the 1800s by horse and carriage as far away as Basingstoke: the lemonade was sold in marble-stoppered Codd bottles – hence often referred to as “Codd’s Wallop” – and several are featured in this display in the library. The ginger beer was sold in earthenware containers,

various styles of which are also on display, labelled as produced by Batchelor’s, W H Twine of Old Alresford, and Hunt and Co, of West Street, Alresford. Mr Batchelor in fact introduced the first motorised vehicle to Alresford, when this van was introduced to speed up his delivery service!

The display has bottles owned by the Alresford Museum, plus many bottles on loan for the display by local collector Darren Goodley of Bishop’s Waltham. Other items include jars of cold cream and medicines from suppliers in Alresford, and also a rare whisky flask – a type known as a “pumpkin flask”, which is labelled as from the Swan Hotel in Alresford. More modern bottles, still full of beer, have also been given for the display by the current local bottlers, the Itchen Valley Brewery! With Alresford having a history of so many public houses, these are also identified in a display of photographs.

The Alresford Museum intends to update the display cabinet in the library on a regular basis, with items of local historic interest, at approximately three month intervals.

Why practise yoga during pregnancy?

students go on to develop lasting friendships.

One of the most rewarding things to observe as a pregnancy yoga teacher is the sense of confidence women gain from coming to class. This self assurance is particularly noticeable as students gradually become more balanced and at ease, during yoga poses and flowing practices, even when their bodies are undergoing such significant changes from week to week. Confidence and body awareness are, of course, even more important as women prepare for labour and birth itself. Many students observe that they feel better prepared and less anxious about childbirth after coming to classes where they have the opportunity to try out positions and movements in order to find out what suits them best.

Since it is the physical benefits of pregnancy yoga which are most often focused on, it is surprising that another thing nearly all students comment on is how effective they find the breathing techniques they are taught. Few people are aware how significantly our 21st Century lifestyle affects the way we breathe, or what a negative impact this can have. In pregnancy yoga we teach not only specific breathing techniques which are helpful during labour and birth, but also simple practices which many students say they fall back on long after pregnancy to help cope with the day to day anxieties of modern living. For me, this highlights the most important benefit of practising yoga for pregnancy. Not only does it give women the chance to enjoy their pregnancy, but it has the real potential to benefit their future health and wellbeing.

Susi Miller is a BWY and Birthlight trained pregnancy yoga teacher who teaches in Old Alresford. For more information visit yogaforpregnancy.org.uk

Having enjoyed yoga for many years, I was very keen to carry on when I

found out I was pregnant. I tried going to a general yoga class and practising on my own following instructions from a precariously balanced book, but found both options frustrating and isolating. It was this experience which influenced me to study to become a pregnancy yoga teacher. Throughout my training and subsequent teaching, I have become more and more convinced of the huge benefits that it offers to women and their babies.

Any Google search will bring back sites listing the advantages of practising pregnancy yoga. These can sometimes give the impression that it offers a miracle cure for all possible pregnancy complaints and almost guarantees an easier labour and birth, even though this is not the message given by teachers. While practising yoga undoubtedly does help alleviate many pregnancy related ailments, it is very often not this benefit women focus on when they are asked what they find most helpful in their classes.

Probably the most common observation students make, is how much they gain from the opportunity for some time to themselves. The pressures on women today have undoubtedly increased tremendously, particularly with regard to the need to work, often later and later into pregnancy. It is so often the stresses of jobs, commuting, and balancing home and work life that are discussed when women have a chance to chat in class. Interestingly it is often the simplest practices which allow them the chance to relax, observe their breathing and connect with their unborn babies which work so well to help alleviate these stresses. Clearly, it is also the opportunity to share pressures and anxieties with others which is also beneficial, and many

“Stone, Vine & Sun was one of the first of Britain’s current welcome wave of small independent wine merchants selling mainly by word of mouth and the internet. The company’s speciality is hand-picked wines retailing for £7-12 that offer really solid value and character, so I have found not a few to recommend in my current Top 100 wines being featured in the Financial Times”, Jancis Robinson, MW, 2nd December 2011, www.jancisrobinson.com

A lot of Hampshire wine drinkers don’t know there’s a multi award-winning, critically acclaimed wine merchant, with lots of distinctive wines (many organic or bio-dynamically farmed), just on their doorstep. Perhaps it’s because our wine warehouse is tucked away on a farm estate: but as we don’t have to pay high street rents, and we have space to ship in container loads of wine from all over the world, we can sell to you at extremely fair prices, and deliver to you for free.

We hope you will discover us. The best way to do so is to come and taste the wines we offer. Alternatively do look at, or indeed order from, our website; call us for advice; or come and see us in our shop.

Retired Hampshire journalist Ken Dykes has just published his

first book—at the age of 77. Titled Country Capers, it is the autobiographical account of a youngster growing up in the English countryside during and just after the Second World War.Said Ken, who worked on Hampshire local weekly newspapers for nearly 40 years, ‘Since I retired I got so fed up with being totally ignored by publishers and receiving pro-forma rejections from literary agents that I decided to self-publish.

Ken Dykes publishes his first book at the age of 77‘I believed I had a story to tell that was worth telling so the book has been published on Amazon Kindle.’

Ken, whose family was ‘bombed out’ while living in Church Square, Basingstoke in 1940, thanks Adolf Hitler, or rather his bombs, for turning him into a ‘country boy’ when, strictly speaking, he should have been a ‘townie’. His next 20 years were spent growing up in Old Basing and his book reflects this complete period of his life. He later became a trainee reporter on the local weekly newspaper, the

Basingstoke Gazette, progressing to the positions of chief reporter, assistant advertising manager, news editor and deputy editor before moving to Andover where he became Editor of the Andover Advertiser.

‘During those dark days of 1940 and early ‘50s , when just about everything was rationed, we seemed to be hungry most of the time,’ he recalls. ‘Many of the capers we got up to as youngsters were schemes designed to increase our calorie intake and nobody took much notice, after all, lots of others were doing the

same things. ‘Many of the capers we got up to as youngsters were schemes designed to increase our calorie intake and nobody took much notice, after all, lots of others were doing the same things. Ken now lives in Andover with his wife Wendy. He has a grown-up son and daughter and three ‘delightful’ granddaughters.

Country Capers can be downloaded from Kindle. For those without a Kindle there is an app available free from Amazon which allows you to download the book to computer, laptop or tablet.

Dear Editor,We fully support your correspondent in the March issue of Forum. It may be that the school is not responsible for all the litter which has accumulated round the Sports field. Nevertheless training in the care and maintenance of property is an important part of the students' education. Other schools in the district take pride in their establishments and given that Perins specialises in sport surely their self respect requires the school to keep their playing fields and surrounds in a clean

Your Letterscondition fit to welcome visitors. The maintenance staff have other more skilled work to attend to and therefore it falls to the students to organise themselves into working parties to tackle the problem, either in lieu of detentions or as a regular duty.Incidentally the appearance of the Avenue at present with the annual lovely display of crocuses and daffodils is in sharp contrast to the paths to which we refer. Yours sincerely,Local walker

'Lady Luck' 1943The plaque in Soke Gardens honours Captain Cogswell of the 303 Bomb Group, US 8th Air Force and his conduct in saving Alresford from a potential disaster.

Is there anyone who still remembers this event? This year is the 70th Anniversary of that fateful day and we are hoping to have a display in the Library window in the week covering the 26th September.

If anyone has any memorabilia that they would be willing to lend us, or any memories that they would like to share, then please could you contact Ray or Hilary Cornford on 01962 734876 or write to us at: 14, Kiln Lane, Old Alresford. SO24 9DUThank you.

On the 26 September 1943 the B17 Flying Fortress "Lady Luck",

carrying a full bomb load, got into difficulties over Alresford. Captain Robert Cogswell ordered his nine crewmen to bail out remaining on board the aircraft himself in an attempt to steer the bomber away from the town. The plane crashed just east of Old Alresford Pond, Captain Cogswell having jumped to safety himself shortly before it crashed.

Standards are Slipping…

Or have, rather unknowingly, slipped. We Pagans have always acknowledged that we are not the tidiest of families. Our home is a mish-mash of music, funny furniture, rugs, candles, and endless

bits of paper, paintings, photographs and books.

At the risk of making excuses, working full time and playing reasonably hard means that dust will inevitably settle. I keep up with the basics but happily put the rest of the messy milieu down to burgeoning eccentricity, the constraints of time and arthritis, confident that it really isn’t that bad…

Or so I thought. The trouble with having a bad back is that periodically you are rendered immobile. To save yourself from slipping into depression, (having watched ten minutes of the Jeremy Kyle show on daytime telly), your eye starts to wander.

I started to wonder, when did I last vacuum under the beds? Why were there polar ice caps alive and well and burgeoning in my freezer? How long had I been promising to clear out that (ok, those) cupboards? And what IS that stuck to the bottom of the oven?

This was bad, I mean really bad. I set about compiling a comprehensive list of maison Pagan’s ‘must dos’, to systematically work through until we were living in a gleaming citadel. Although my resolve was firm it would actually have to wait until the following weekend, as we, along with the Immaculate In-Laws, were off to visit cousins in the New Forest.

As ever, a happy time would be had by all, but my visit would be marred by the stark realization that we Pagans appear not only to have won the least coveted award for most untidy home for the past fifteen years running, but stand more than a good chance of winning the new category, that of most grubby car.

At present the New Forest, as my brother in law so aptly describes it, resembles a mangrove swamp. Walking on the heath is impossible without the aid of a diving suit. The cousins’ house is tucked down a little lane in the middle of the forest and they have two dogs, yet their home is both beautiful and pristine. Yet more surprisingly, given the climatic conditions, their black Land Rover and white Mercedes reside on the drive in showroom condition, and on this day were joined by the Immaculate In-Laws’ Audi, which is in even cleaner condition.

One could almost see the three graces of the automobile world wince as our Trusty Renault shambled onto the drive behind them.

After lunch it was time for a walk which necessitated much wrapping up in warm clothes and changing into stout boots. As tailgates eased open, it became apparent that all outdoor gear should be stored in colour-coded plastic boxes, and those boxes placed on a rubber mat so as not to dirty the inside of the car. Ah, so that’s how it’s done.

“Right Sandra, I’ll lift up the tailgate, all you have to do is hold it up long enough for me to get the stuff out.” Star II in a fit of pique had, some time ago if I’m honest, swung on the hydraulic arm that lifts and supports said tailgate and needless to say, it broke.

In true Heath Robinson fashion The Husband came to the rescue with a four-foot length of 3 by 3, the perfect prop apparently. It worked very well; it was ok–ish on the privacy of the drive, it drew some curious glances in Tesco’s car park, which was bearable, but here, amongst the elite, it was up there in neon just how far we Pagans had slipped.

As the others donned pressed coats and shiny outdoor shoes, the Trusty Renault spewed forth its contents of muddy wellies and tatty coats, and curiously, a long section of old man’s beard from a previous walk; not quite sure how long it had been in there. Oh the shame!

In accepting the award for ‘Most Messy Car’, I would like to thank ten years of chocolate buttons and chewits, mud and sand from all regions of the country, loose change, CDs (all in the wrong cases), Star II’s stone and stick collection, old parking tickets and two paperbacks. I couldn’t have done it without the help of my family. Thank you.

Still, there is hope on the horizon as The Husband has ordered the new part for the tailgate and I have persuaded him that we should keep our beloved and beleaguered car for another year and then give it to Star I who would be of an age to drive. Perfect!

Star I is not impressed, can’t think why….

Sandra Pagan.

The most common work carried out has been for minor knocks caused in car parks/driveways with damage to bumpers/wheel arches and trims.

Claiming on an insurance policy for these minor repairs could increase the future premium and a visit to a body shop could become very expensive and involve losing your car for a few days. With Auto Brite, your car is repaired at
