Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector

• The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector is to be used when performing a hazard assessment of– Oxygen concentration,– Combustible gases,– Toxic gases and vapors

• Do not sample high concentration gas sources, such as a vehicle exhaust for CO, or a LPG/propane bottle discharge. Over-saturation of the sensors may damage the instrument.

Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector

• The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector issued is equipped to detect:– Oxygen (O2)– Carbon Monoxide (CO)– Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)– Combustible Gases (LEL)– Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN)

Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector

• The instrument displays the toxic gas concentration in parts per million (PPM).

• Oxygen and Lower Explosive Limit are displayed as percentage. (One percent equals 10,000 parts per million)

Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector

• If the gas concentration reaches or exceeds the alarm set point or the STEL (Short Term Exposure Limits) or TWA (Time Weighted Average) limits, the:– alarm message displays and flashes in combination

with the corresponding gas concentration– backlight turns ON– alarm sounds– alarm LEDs flash– vibrating alarm triggers.

WARNING

If an alarm activates while using the instrument, ensure you are protected by

wearing correct PPE or leave the area immediately and take appropriate corrective

measures. Assume your instrument is correct, and confirm

with a second instrument, then diagnose the source and determine corrective actions.

Alarm Parameters

• Oxygen (O2) – below 19.5% or above 23%• Carbon Monoxide (CO) – 25 ppm (TWA) to 100 ppm (STEL) • Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) – 10 ppm (TWA) to 15 ppm (STEL) • Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) – 4.7 ppm (TWA) to 10 ppm (STEL)• Combustible Gases (LEL) – 10% LEL

(STEL – Short Term Exposure Limit)(TWA – Time Weighted Average)

Page 8: Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector 11-12-2014. Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector is to be used when performing a hazard assessment.

WARNING

An LEL reading of "XXX” indicates the atmosphere may be above 100% and an

explosion hazard exists. Leave the contaminated area immediately.

NOTE

If Oxygen concentration is below 20.8 percent consider what is causing the oxygen to be depleted or displaced.

Do not use the ALTAIR 5X, or ALTAIR 5X IR MultiGas Detectors totest for combustible or toxic gases in the following atmospheres asthis may result in erroneous readings:• Oxygen-deficient or oxygen-rich atmospheres• Reducing atmospheres• Furnace stacks• Inert environments (only IR sensors acceptable for use)• Atmospheres containing combustible airborne mists/dusts.

To turn unit on:• In clean air, press and hold the power button

beneath the bottom center of the display screen.

• Allow the unit to turn on and run through its internal process. This takes approximately three minutes.

• Do not block the pump flow except when prompted during the startup.

Page 14: Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector 11-12-2014. Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector is to be used when performing a hazard assessment.

• If possible, run the Fresh Air Setup by selecting Fresh Air Setup “Yes” when prompted. If not, then select “No” and the unit can be immediately placed into monitoring mode.

NOTE:If the monitor detects that it is not in a clean air

environment, it will immediately go into monitoring and alarm mode.

• As soon as the unit has completed its operational startup it is in a real time Monitoring mode.

• When monitoring, verify oxygen levels first. The LEL reading (and maybe other readings) will not be accurate in an oxygen deprived or enhanced atmosphere.

To turn the unit off, • press and hold the power button until the unit

turns off. • Allow the unit to run in clean air prior to

shutting it off. This allows the sensor area to clear for storage.

Daily Maintenance

• Turn the instrument on at the start of your rig check and allow it to run during your rig check (15 minute minimum). This will help the sensor life span.

• If display shows a heart icon (any color) note the segment of the pie chart display, or fails to operate properly in any other manner; send an email to your shift’s Haz Mat Technicians describing your findings.

• Document your check of the instrument on your “Daily Vehicle check sheet”.

Page 19: Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector 11-12-2014. Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector is to be used when performing a hazard assessment.

Weekly Maintenance

• Bump Test your instrument every Thursday.• Insert instrument into “Galaxy Tower,” choose “Bump

Test” via the controls, and wait for the green light indicating the instrument passed the test.

• If it fails, indicated by a red light, notify your shift Haz Mat Technicians.

• If it is in need of calibration, the tower will do that automatically. (It will take about 15 minutes, instead of the 3-5 minutes for Bump Test only.)

• DON’T FORGET: Sign the Altair 5X log book located near the tower.

Page 20: Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector 11-12-2014. Altair® 5X MultiGas Detector The ALTAIR 5X MultiGas Detector is to be used when performing a hazard assessment.

Monthly Maintenance

• If your instrument exceeds 30 days from its last calibration, you must take the instrument to the tower for a calibration.

• Insert the powered-up instrument into the Galaxy Tower and choose “Calibrate” via the controls.

• Wait for the green light indicating it passed the process. If it has a red light, try one additional attempt at calibration. If it still fails, notify your shift Haz Mat Technicians.

• Sign the Altair 5X log book located near the tower.

Altair® 5X MultiGas DetectorCalibration

• If the unit is dropped or subjected to a physical shock recalibrate it prior to use.

• If the unit fails Fresh Air Startup it must be recalibrated prior to use.

• If you believe your instrument may have sucked up a fluid of any type, notify your shift Haz Mat Technician.
