CHANTING THE COLLECTS
To point a collect for chanting, it is first necessary to know the
structure of the historic collect.
A full collect traditionally consisted of five parts:
Address names the person of the Trinity to whom the collect is
addressed
Rationale provides an attribute or work of God that serves as the
basis for the prayer
Petition the request
Benefit describes the desired outcome, usually beginning with the
word “that”
Termination the conclusion, which can be simple or a fuller,
trinitarian termination
This structure is easily discerned in the Collect for Christmas
Dawn:
Address Most merciful God,
Rationale You gave Your eternal Word to become incarnate of the
pure Virgin.
Petition Grant Your people grace to put away fleshly lusts,
Benefit that they may be ready for Your visitation;
Termination through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns
with You and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Many of the historic collects do not rigidly follow this structure.
The rationale is sometimes omit-
ted, or the petition and benefit are frequently joined together.
These modifications of the structure
do not substantially affect the methods for chanting described
below.
Method One—Simple Collect Tone Two methods for chanting the
collects are provided. For both, the pitch of the reciting tone
is
determined by the prevailing chant level in the surrounding
responses.
The simple collect tone, originally developed for Lutheran Worship
(1982), consists of three parts.
1. The reciting tone Address

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and
unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by
what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not
loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as
ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.
For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive
us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and
walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of
Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one
substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us
men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate
by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was
crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was
buried. And the third day He rose again according to the
Scriptures
and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the
dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

kingdom and teach us to pray:
C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and
ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9–13
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD The presiding minister faces the elements on
the altar during the consecration.
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night
when He was betrayed, took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He
broke it and gave it to the disciples
and said: “Take, eat; this is My
T body, which is given for you.
This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the
cup after supper, and when He
had given thanks, He gave it to
them, saying: “Drink of it, all of
you; this cup is the new testament
in My T blood, which is shed for
you for the forgiveness of sins.
This do, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of Me.” Matthew 26:26–28; Mark 14:22–24
Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–25

MATINS
There are two traditions concerning the liturgist’s position in
leading Matins. 1. The service may center on the altar as the
constant symbol of God’s presence. The liturgist
stands before the altar for responsive versicles, psalms, and
prayers. 2. The service may be conducted without reference to the
altar (reserving it as the focal point for
the Divine Service). The liturgist then conducts the entire
service, with the exception of the readings, from the sedilia
(leaders’ chairs in the chancel).
In either case, the second focal point of the service is the
lectern, from which the readings are pro- claimed. The lectern may
be highlighted by placing candle stands on either side. If the
church does not have a lectern, the readings may be proclaimed from
the horns of the altar, the pulpit, or the sedilia.

THE CHURCH AND HER MISSION
For the Church Merciful God, we humbly implore You to cast the
bright beams of Your light
upon Your Church that we, being instructed by the doctrine of the
blessed apos-
tles, may walk in the light of Your truth and finally attain to the
light of everlast-
ing life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (101)
Almighty God, grant to Your Church Your Holy Spirit and the wisdom
that
comes down from above, that Your Word may not be bound but have
free course
and be preached to the joy and edifying of Christ’s holy people,
that in steadfast
faith we may serve You and, in the confession of Your name, abide
unto the end;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (102)
O Lord, graciously receive the prayers of Your Church that, being
delivered from
all adversity and error, it may serve You in safety and freedom and
dwell in Your
peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (103)
For the mission of the Church Almighty God, You have called Your
Church to witness that in Christ You have
reconciled us to Yourself. Grant that by Your Holy Spirit we may
proclaim the
good news of Your salvation so that all who hear it may receive the
gift of salva-
tion; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. (104)

1. This rite may begin the Ash Wednesday service, or it may be used
separately with the imposi- tion of ashes.
2. The imposition of ashes may take place as worshipers enter the
nave or after the Litany. 3. Ashes are a sign of mortality and
death. Therefore, the imposition of ashes should be followed
by the rite of Confession and Absolution. 4. Ashes may be prepared
from palm fronds from the previous Palm Sunday. A little olive oil
is
usually added to improve the consistency of the ashes. The ashes
are set in a convenient place. A bowl of water and a towel should
be available on a credence table near the altar so that the
officiant may wash his hands after the imposition of ashes.
5. Due to the solemn character of the day, pre-service music and a
hymn of invocation are omit- ted. The pastor and assistants enter
in silence.
If the imposition of ashes occurs as worshipers arrive, the pastor
or an assistant places the ashes on the forehead of each person in
the sign of the cross while saying “Remember that you are dust, and
to dust you shall return.”

begins a holy season of prayerful and penitential reflection. Our
attention is
especially directed to the holy sufferings and death of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
From ancient times the season of Lent has been kept as a time of
special
devotion, self-denial, and humble repentance born of a faithful
heart that
dwells confidently on His Word and draws from it life and
hope.
Let us pray that our dear Father in heaven, for the sake of His
beloved Son
and in the power of His Holy Spirit, might richly bless this
Lententide for us
so that we may come to Easter with glad hearts and keep the feast
in sincerity
and truth.

I. THE LORD’S SUPPER
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, also called the Passover, drew
near, and
Jesus said to his disciples: “You know that after two days is the
Feast of the
Passover, and the Son of Man will be given over to be
crucified.”
Then the chief priests and scribes assembled with the elders of the
people in
the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and
consulted how they
might take Jesus craftily and put him to death. But they said, “Not
on the feast
day, lest there be an uproar among the people,” for they feared the
people.
Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, one of the
Twelve. He
went his way to the chief priests and captains and spoke together
with them how
he might betray Jesus to them. They were glad to hear him. He said
to them,
“What will you give me to betray him to you?”
They promised to give him money and agreed with him for thirty
pieces of
silver. He accepted, and from that time he sought opportunity to
betray him in
the absence of the multitude.
Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread when they sacrificed
the
Passover lamb. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare
the Passover,
that we may eat it.”
They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
He said to them, “Go into the city and, when you have entered the
city, watch
for a man bearing a pitcher of water. When he meets you, follow him
into the
house where he enters. You shall say to the man who lives there,
‘The Master
says to you, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your
house. Where
is the room for me to eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ And he
will show
you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; there make ready
for us.”
The disciples did as Jesus had directed them. They came into the
city and
found it as he had told them; and they made ready the
Passover.

PROCESSION OF PALMS If the procession begins outside the nave, the
congregation gathers around the proces- sional cross. If the
congregation is already seated in the nave, it now stands and faces
the processional cross at the entrance to the nave.
GREETING
P The grace of our Lord T Jesus Christ and the love of God and the
com-
munion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C Amen.
P Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
C Hosanna to the Son of David.
COLLECT
P Let us pray.
Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their
hands,
gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His
Holy
City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He
comes
again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts
and
follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same
Jesus
Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, one
God, now and forever. (494)
C Amen.
HOLY GOSPEL
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
P The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard
that Jesus
was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and
went
out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in
the
name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a
young
donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
“Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when
Jesus was
glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written
about
him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when
he
called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead
continued to
bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that
they
heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another,
“You see
that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

form of the Divine Service (including the Gloria in Excelsis, for
instance) on this day. Thus, one may decide to use the traditional
Divine Service in its complete form.
3. Two sets of propers are provided in the three-year lectionary
for Holy Thursday. The first set provides separate propers for
Series A, B, and C. In each of these, the Holy Gospel features the
institution narrative from the respective Synoptic Gospel. In
addition, a second set of propers is provided that may be used in
any year. In these propers the Holy Gospel is the tra- ditional
reading from John 13 that features Jesus’ “new command to love one
another.”
4. The dismissal following the absolution may be spoken to each
individual penitent, to an entire group of penitents at the altar,
or to the entire congregation at the conclusion.
5. It is customary for the pastor(s) to strip the altar, with
assistance from the altar guild and/or the elders.
6. The communion vessels are removed first, followed by the altar
cross, missal stand, altar can- dles, altar paraments, pulpit and
lectern paraments, chancel candles and candle stands, chan- cel
banners, chancel flowers, and any other items of liturgical use or
adornment remaining in the chancel.
7. If Psalm 22 ends before the stripping of the altar is finished,
then the action should be con- cluded in silence.
8. Because the Triduum is seen as one service in three parts, no
Benediction is spoken at the conclusion of the Holy Thursday
service. The Benediction spoken at the Easter Vigil or at the chief
service on Easter Sunday concludes all the services of the Three
Days.

The following Confessional Address is read. P During this Lenten
season we have heard our Lord’s call to intensify our
struggle
against sin, death, and the devil—all that prevents us from
trusting in God and
loving each other. Since it is our intention to receive the Holy
Supper of our Lord
Jesus Christ on this night when He instituted this blessed meal for
our salvation,
it is proper that we complete our Lenten discipline by diligently
examining our-
selves, as St. Paul urges us to do. This holy Sacrament has been
instituted for the
special comfort of those who are troubled because of their sin and
who humbly
confess their sins, fear God’s wrath, and hunger and thirst for
righteousness.

SERVICE OF LIGHT The congregation gathers in a convenient place
outside the nave of the church. Where permissible, candles are
given to all, later to be lighted from the paschal candle.
In the semidarkness a fire may be kindled.
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
C Amen.
P Beloved in the Lord, on this most holy night, in which our Lord
Jesus passed
over from death to life, we are gathered here in vigil and prayer.
This is the
Passover of the Lord in which, by hearing His Word and celebrating
His
Sacraments, we share in His victory over death.
P Let us pray.
O God, You are like a refiner’s fire, and Your Spirit enkindles the
hearts of
Your faithful people with the fire of Your love. Bless, we implore
You, this
new flame and those who keep this joyful Easter festival that,
burning with
desire for life with You, we may be found rightly prepared to share
in the Feast
of Light which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our
Lord, who lives
and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
(452)
C Amen.
An assistant, holding the paschal candle, steps forward. The pastor
traces the cross on the candle while saying: P Christ Jesus, the
same yesterday, today, and forever, the beginning and the
ending,
and then traces the Greek letters Alpha and Omega on the candle
while saying: the Alpha and the Omega.
He traces the year on the candle, saying: P His are time and
eternity; His are the glory and dominion, now and forever.
He puts the five wax nails into the candle, saying: P By His wounds
we have healing both now and forever. Amen.
Then, lighting the candle from the newly kindled fire, he says: P
May the light of Christ, who is risen in glory from the dead,
scatter all the dark-
ness of our hearts and minds.

P Let us pray.
Almighty and most merciful God, pour out on us Your abundant
blessing that
all who in true faith share this night in joyful celebration of the
resurrection
of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead may be filled with Your
heavenly
benediction. Once we were in darkness, but now we are in the Light,
even
Jesus Christ, our Lord. (453)
C Amen.
All light their candles from the paschal candle and then follow the
candle bearer in procession into the darkened church.
At the entrance of the nave, the bearer of the paschal candle stops
and chants:
When the candle bearer reaches the middle of the nave, he chants
for the second time:
When the candle bearer arrives at the candle stand, he turns to
face the congregation. After all have reached their places, the
candle bearer lifts the candle high and chants the third
time:
