In October, 1985. the elders of the Ellettsville Christian Churchulleied rny larnily and rne a Uirec monlii sabbatical leave to Leachin the Zimbabwe Christian College, Harare, Zimbabwe. The intitialinvitation came from Brother Jack Pcnnington, veteran missionaryto Zimbabwe and Principal of the Zimbabwe Christian College.Brother Pennington approached our elders who, in turn, approached my wife and me with the invitation to teach inAfrica.

Needless to say, it took a very short period of time for theAltmans to make a decision, Plans began to develop rapidly in thefollowing months. The Ellettsville Christian Church opened aspecial account for our trip and an offering was taken in thespring to cover our expenses. The Lord provided through thiscongregation's love for missions, in May, 1986, we left the Statesfor the "dark" continent and spent three wonderful months inZimbabwe. Each of the six Altmans had specific tasks and goalsfor the summer. We were changed for life!

/^Before we left Africa, Brother Pennington extended,.an,invitation tojus to return to Zimbabwe and assume responsibiTitles ' in/administration and teaching. After our return we spent threemonths, in prayer over this decision, Many factors had to bestudied and weighed. We were in our tenth year with theEllettsville Christian Church. We were happy in the church and inthe community. Our children were raised here and this washome. Our two older children (Beth & Bill) would have to remainin the States to complete their college education. We would notsee our parents and other family members for several years. Onand on the list of considerations went.

in November, 1986, the Penningtons visited our home while onfurlough. We talked and prayed at length about the ministry atthe Zimbabwe Christian College. We realized that it was

treasonable and wise to make the move to Afica. We had been/ prepared for the task through many years in various ministries in

I the States. Our ten years at Ellettsville completed thatpreparation. Our conclusion was, "We must go."

/

. ....

W.e-^p!an. to.-.leaye for Zim.babwg in January, 1988, the Lordwilling. Between now and our departure we will be engaged incontinuing our ministry at the Ellettsville Christian Church andsecuring support for the mission work. The Ellettsville ChristianChurch, where we begin our eleventh year July, 198'7, is . oursponsoring church. This missions-minded congregation hasencouraged us every step of the way in our decision and plans forZimbabwe.

Page 12: Altman David Becky 1987 Zimbabwe

Jack Pennington, present Principal of the Zimbabwe ChristianCollege, stated in a letter to the Elders of the Ellettsville ChristianChurch; "We would consider it a blessing if the Lord was to openthe door for them (the Altmans) to return and work with thecollege.-.."

In a letter to area churches the Ellettsville Elders said: "We, theElders support and encourage Dave Altman and his family in theirservice to the Zimbabwe Christian College in Harare, Zimbabwe. We request your prayer, encouragement and financial support forthis mission work."

We sense the urgency in returning to Zimbabwe as soon as possiblein order to continue the work of teaching and leading. Our hopeand prayer is that the days of evangelism will continue to flourishin Zimbabwe.

We are available to meet with Missions Committees, Elders, andMinisters of churches desiring to expand their mission outreach. You may contact us at the following addresses:

In May of 1986 Dave, Lisa, and Danny were leaving for Zimbabwe.Beth. Bill, and I were waiting until Bill graduated before we joined them. Our family had never been separated this way. so it was a veryinteresting time for all of us. We were excited, but apprehensive also. Aswe took Dave and the two younger children to the airport we were allbusy getting our last words said to each other. Lisa had avery speciallymessage for me. She said. "Mom. don't forget to feed my bird and water^him." 1hurriedly answered. "Oh. don't worry, we won't forget." Lisa hadreceived the bird as a gift from a friend and Chirpy was very importantto her. She had often mentioned to me at home that 1 must not forgetthis task. Well. Beth. Bill, and 1 went on home and got busy with .graduation, our own packing, grandparents coming, etc.. and. sure jjenough, one day 1looked atthe cage and there was Chirpy lying lifeless ([on the bottom of the cage. My heart sank. How could 1 possibly have letthis happen when 1 knew how much Lisa loved her bird? My little girlwas clear on the other side of the world and the least 1 could have donewas to feed and water her bird. That night 1went to prayer meeting andas 1 entered the building one of my friends said. "Well. Becky, how areyou doing?" 1 just burst into tears and told her how terrible 1 felt. 1decided 1 couldn't tell Lisa about the bird on the phone so 1 would waituntil 1 got there to break the bad news.

Dave called to ask us to bring some items and Lisa got on the phone. Ofcourse, she repeated her instructions to me to be sure and take care ofthe bird. Needless to say. I felt like a real loser. When we got toZimbabwe 1 told Lisa what had happened and promised to replace her petwith another one when we returned home.

The next spring, around April. 1 was preparing a talk for a ladies'group at the Southside Christian Church in filoomington. Ind.. and wasconsidering all the events of our trip to Africa, our decision to return, and the many scriptures that had influenced our decision. 1 read againthe familiar story of Jesus telling His disciples good-bye as He preparedto make the long journey home to be with His Father. As 1 wascontemplating all of these things a tremendoi^paiailej^f events cametomy heart and mind. As 1rememberld'iiie oira 1 cdncTudSd there weretwo reasons why Lisa chose this as the last request to make of me: first, because of the love she had for the bird, it was vitally important to herthat 1 fulfill her request; and secondly, because she knew me wellenough to know it was the one thing 1 just might forget to do. Then 1thought of what Jesus said to His disciples before He ascended into \Heaven: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in thename of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy; Spirit, and teachingthem to obey everything 1 have commanded you. And surely 1 am with

1 you always, to the very end of the age." Athought struck me full force.Could Jesus have chosen this as His last request of us for the same two

/ reasons that Lisa chose her last request? Did He say it because it was/ extremely important to Him because of the great love He has for all/ people of the world, and did He also know us well enough to know this is/ the one thing we might neglect to do?

There is a whole world of people needing to be fed the Word of God. theL^ood news of Jesus, and ifwe don't feed them they will end just like

/Y/Chirpy-lifeless and with no hope for anything else. When Ithink of how"^^/\ awful I felt when I failed Lisa, how much worse will we Christians feel il' we don't share the Life-giver with those who are lost?

ACC0UNTA91LIT7The Bible states .in Hebrews

13:17, "Obey your leaders, and submitto tbem; for they keep watch over yoursouls, as those who will give an account.Let them do this with joy and not withgrief, for this wouldbe unprofitable foryou."

Over the past several monthsmuch discussion has centered

on the mishandling of God'sfunds through lack ofaccountability. For everyministry that fails in this area jthere are hundreds that ijwillingly submit to authority.

We will be held accountable

by the Eldership of theEllettsville Christian Church.

Reports will continually begiven to them by both us andour forwarding agents, Mr. andMrs. A1 Norris. The Elders will

also be willing to speak withanyone about these bi-monthlyreports.

I Both the Altmans and the[Elders feel good about thisIarrangement. We will also be

submiting ourselves to theCentral Africa Mission Board inAfrica and America.
