BEFORE NOW

At one time Alton was a small colonia north of Mission, Texas. The City of Alton was incorporated on April, 1978. This historic event allows the residents of the community direct input in their self governance and also allows the city to manage its growth in a more orderly manner and to provide greater economic development opportunities to its citizens.

Today Alton is experiencing a population explosion. According to the U.S. Census, the population of the city in 2000 was just below 5,000 residents. Latest estimates from the U.S. Census place our population at 7,500 residents. We anticipate by 2010 Alton’s population will be 10,000 – double its population in 2000.

In just the past 15 months, the city has facilitated the approval of over 1000 new residential lots, two 75 multi-family units, jump started the city’s economic development corporation, facilitated the establishment of a chamber of commerce and finalized the construction and financing plans for a new city hall.
