We were just about to sign off on this service when we were approached by the department to trial KONNECTIVE. As part of the 2 year trial, this service will be free for our school. Konnecve is a mobile app soluon that will allow us to communicate with you, our parents, straight to your smartphone. We may be sending news, events, photos and more so that you can be even more connect- ed with your children’s acvies and events at the school. Using the Konnecve app, you can add events directly to your phone's calendar, set reminders for things you need to do and receive important alerts (similar to a text message) as soon as they are released. Via the app, we can send communicaon to specific grade levels, so you will receive informaon specific to your child’s grade as well as general news, events and updates that will go to everyone. This will extend and enhance our exisng communicaons (eg. Newsleer, website). We encourage you to be a part of this new school iniave and give us your feedback. Shortly you will be sent an invitaon email, which will provide you with instrucons on how to download the app and register (it’s free), if you wish to do so. For those without a smartphone there is a web mobile version as well as a website version. More details will follow over the coming weeks. To all our families who celebrate Eid we hope this is a happy me for you all.

Last term, the Finance Committee approved the use of an SMS service as a communication tool to be used in our school for important messages. We were just about to sign off on this service when we were approached by the department to trial KONNECTIVE. As part of the 2 year trial, this service will be free for our school.

Konnective is a mobile app solution that will allow us to communicate with you, our parents, straight to your smartphone. We may be sending news, events, photos and more so that you can be even more connect-ed with your children’s activities and events at the school. Using the Konnective app, you can add events directly to your phone's calendar, set reminders for things you need to do and receive important alerts (similar to a text message) as soon as they are released. Via the app, we can send communication to specific grade levels, so you will receive information specific to your child’s grade as well as general news, events and updates that will go to everyone. This will extend and enhance our existing communications (eg. Newsletter, website). We encourage you to be a part of this new school initiative and give us your feedback. Shortly you will be sent an invitation email, which will provide you with instructions on how to download the app and register (it’s free), if you wish to do so. For those without a smartphone there is a web mobile version as well as a website version. More details will follow over the coming weeks.

To all our families who celebrate Eid we hope this is a happy time for you all.

WANTED! Materials for the Wheelbarrow design competition

The school has voted; Altona Green Primary School will be entering a Cow Wheelbarrow into the Wheelbarrow Decoration Competition at the Royal Melbourne Show! Over term 3 the Grade 4 students will work to transform an everyday wheelbarrow into a paper machier cow’s head. We will need lots of materials for this project. If you or some one you know can donate materials or help in any other way, it would be very well received. Below is a list of materials needed;

-a wheelbarrow! -chicken wire -old newspapers -flour (for making paste) -paint (black, white, red/pink)

Thanks, Carolina

Premiers Reading Challenge It has been wonderful to see lots of students com-pleting their reading challenge for this year. A reminder that it will be finishing in early Septem-ber and to record all the books that you have been reading at school and at home. If you complete your challenge, you will get to see your name printed in the newspaper and be given a special certificate. There are still many students who are registered, but have not recorded many books. There is still time to record and read more. Remember, I would love to hear about the books that you have read! If you see me in the yard, come and chat to me about the book. Happy Reading! Debbie Markovic Premiers Reading Challenge co-ordinator

Book Talk Last week I was really pleased to see my all time favourite book 'A Fish Out of Water' by Helen

Palmer and illustrated by P. D. Eastman being read by Spencer Tyers of Prep S. Spencer thinks this book is funny and it's a story about a boy who buys a fish called Otto. "The boy feeds Otto too much food. He was told not too but he

was naughty and kept feeding his fish. Otto was so big he ended up fitting only in a swim-ming pool. Mr Carp from the fish shop had to come and put on his swimming clothes and make Otto small again. He told the boy not to feed him too much again or else!!" It is good to see that some of our 'old' favourites are still popular books today. This book was first published way back in 1963! Thank you Spencer Trish Allen

What’s My Scene?

Basketball: My name is Will Hallpike and my hobby is playing basketball. I’m playing for the Altona – Laverton Eagles. I have played 51 games. I’ve got a medal for playing 50 games. I’m in the under 12s Black Eagles team. I got a medal for getting the most goals in my team. I train on Wednesday nights and we practise defence work and lay ups. We train for one hour and we get to run a lot. We play our games on Friday nights. Our first game this season was on the 24th of May. We played against the Williamstown Cannons. We lost, the score was 0 to 15, but we tried our hard-est. I like playing basketball because it is fun and it’s active and it gets me out of the house. I love playing basketball!

The Bounce Thanks for the terrific response to the swimming program which starts in late August. There have been well over 100 students interested in attending the 9

day program which means we can send 3 groups to the program. If you still wish to attend we now have more spots available so if you were contemplating having your child attend, then please contact the office by Friday so that we can organise final numbers with the bus company and the swim-ming pool. MUSICIAN OF THE WEEK Jackson Kinney- Elliott from 1/2 S for listening

The NED Show

On Thursday the 1st of August the whole school went to the gym where the NED show was held. Christine showed us tricks like the Eiffel tower, a star, a Ferris wheel and the roller coaster. She was hilarious. She told us what Ned stands for:

NEVER GIVE UP ENCOURAGE OTHERS DO YOUR BEST By Finlay Chachs and Emily Sharrocks 2/3M

* Sales of NED products will finish on Friday

Classroom Clippings Preps The Hobsons Bay Ranger will be visiting the preps on Friday to talk about her role in the community. Our Learning Intention for reading this week is: Good readers look at the punctuation to help them read. Grade 1/2 Our inquiry unit on ‘Up, Down and All Around’ is going well. The children are all very excited. You may be asked, ‘Does it have a wheel or axel?’ Or maybe ‘Can we use a lever to move it?’. Please encourage this type of questioning at home with your child. We are all discussing force and movement of objects in the classroom and the world around us. Thank you for sending toys to school to classify and to discuss on our toy day last week. The weather outside is still very cold and at times wet. It is important that your child has suitable clothing to keep them warm and dry. Remember to check if their names are still clearly marked. Grade 2/3 A reminder that camp medical report and permission note need to be brought back to school. Also, in this cold and wet weather children need to be dressing appropriately, pants, jumpers and jack-ets please. These all need to be well labelled. If your child has lost any of their uniform, have a look in lost property.

Grade 4 Three notes have been sent home this week with the students who will be attending our Middle Camp. The yellow permission note/behaviour agreement and the pink medical form need to be filled in, signed and returned to classroom teachers. Please return these two notes by Friday 16th August. Remember, if parents have any questions regarding the camp, please contact your child's teacher. Grade 5/6 At present your child is studying an author in their grade. They have been identifying and discussing the author’s message in the text, their language and writing style, the similarities between texts they have written and what inspired them to write. Why not ask your child about Roald Dahl, Jennie Baker, Colin Thompson, Emily Rodda or Andy Griffiths. If your child really enjoys Andy Griffiths, take them along to a free session and meet the famous author. Below is information about his free sessions .
