Well friends, I have finally made this Alumini eBook after a long wait. It had been a very long and timeconsuming project but I have really enjoyed working on it. When we had first ventured to start an AluminiAssociation, we had got only 11 entries. This time howver, there was a very good response. I thank all theformer students who had helped me with gathering the information.I would like to acknowledge that a lot of my batchmates had helped me in this project. In particular, Iwould like to thank Sunil K. Muduli, Asish G. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

�To produce quality man-power, equipped withsuch human and social values required to inte-grate excellent technical skill, social character,leadership, creativity and renovation for thebenefit of mankind and sustainable develop-ment of India and to promote research in theemerging disciplines.�

SymbolReflecting these themes and embodying them in a symbol is the new

logo for National Institute of Technology, Silchar. The outer ring in the logo isa simplified form of a rope which is symbolic of strength and confluence. Theknots of the ropes have transformed into seven leaves, denoting the sevenNorth-Eastern states which until now REC Silchar represented. Their mergerhas now resulted into a new entity i.e. NIT Silchar.

The leaves surround a gear inside them which is the icon for techni-cal education. Its forward rotation signifies continuous growth and improve-ment. The central ring is the axis and basis of all development.

ColoursThe colours of the logo are: Red and Blue. These two colours are the

basic colours and have a cosmopolitan look. Besides, being the colours ofopposite contrast, these create a sense of dynamism and vibrancy. Thesecolours also give a sense of authority and officialness to the logo.

RationaleRegional Engineering College, Silchar

has been transformed into National Institute ofTechnology. An institute already known for itshigh quality technical education, that it impartsin the students who come here to pursue techni-cal education from the Seven North EasternStates as well as the entire country.

NIT Silchar, stresses its educationalstrategy in an Institute of national importance,which takes a cosmopolitan approach towardseducating youth. It wants to promote itself as apremier Institute for technical education in Indiaand expresses its policies in the following words– ‘Education’, ‘Technical’, ‘Confluence’, ‘Cos-mopolitan’ and ‘National’.

REC Silchar was establishedas the 15th REC of India in1967. The college started func-tioning in 1967 from a campoffice in Shillong with Dr. S. K.Baruah as the Principal. The540 acres of our campus wasacquired from the BhorakhaiTea Estate. To facilitate con-struction of the college, thecamp office was shifted toSilchar Polytechnic.

obiettivoThe New College Bus

With the conversion of our college into a NITand a Deemed University, the Students’Union now is known as the Students’Gymkhana. The General Secretary of Stu-dents’ Gymkhana for the year 2003-2004 wasTamanna-E-Rassull. The Gymkhana com-prises of a number of major and minor posts.The major posts include the Sports sectionand the Literary section. In addition there isalso a General Secretary, Students’ Welfare(Dhruba Jyoti Das) and General Secretary,Hostel Affairs (Sandeep Singh).We now have two new college buses for thestudents, staff anf faculty of the college.There is also a Multi-Gym set up in the co-operative building exclusively for the studentsA Photography Club was started by the Pho-tography Secretary, Jay Raj. The college haspurchased a SLR and a Handy Cam. Someof the photographs in this eBook were takenusing the HandyCam.In addition Night Cricket tournament wasorganised by the Cricket Secretary, PradeepR.There was also a Night Basketball tour-nament organised by the Basketball Secre-tary, Sunil K. Muduli.An Annual Athletic meetwas also organised by the Athletic Secre-tary, Vinit K. Nadda. Indoor Games compe-tition and the Football competitions were alsoorganised by the respective Secretaries.Theoverall Sports events were coordinated bythe Sprots General Secretary, ChumchamoKithan.The Literary Committee had brought out aWall Magazine ‘NITTY GRITTY’. They arealso involved with the publication of the An-nual College Magazine.

Training & PlacementThe Training & Placement committee for theyear 2003-2004 comprised of 4 student com-mittee members - Sunil K. Muduli (PlacementCoordinator), V.M. Narayanan, Asish G.Varghese and Jacob James. The Placementthis year has been pretty good. About 50+students were placed in the 2000-2004 batchin more than 10 companiesLet us try our best to improve the campussingof our college.

The First Technical Festival of NIT Silchar

Brainstorm- The first technical festival of our college was inaugurated by Dr. A.A.S.H. Barbuiya (Dean P&D). The 3 day event go t off to a colourful start. TheChairman of the Brainstorm Committee was Prof. Rajat Gupta (Dean Students’ Affairs) and Convener was Tamanna-E-Rassull (General Secretary, Stu-dents’ Gymkhana).The three day events included Morpheus (open software contest), Wired (hardware contest), Brain Tumor (creative ideas contest), Grey Matter (technicalpaper presentation), Mastermind (quiz contest), Kriti (design contest), Workshops, Guest Lecture by Dr. Ratnajit Bhattacharjee (Asstt. Prof., IIT Guwahatiwho is also an alumini of our college), Night Movie Shows and Food Fest.Prof. Gautam Barua, Director NIT Silchar, was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony and gave away the prizes to the winners.

The First Convocation of NIT Silchar was held on 16th Febru-ary, 2004. It was a historic moment in the history of NIT Silchar as itwas the first time the college was awarding its own degree using itsDeemed University status. The degrees were conferred by Prof.Gautam Barua, Director, NIT Silchar. D. Jagdish Mohan of Mechani-cal Engg. won the Institute Gold Medal for being the All-Branch top-per for the 1999-2003 batch.

A glittering Cultural Nite was organised on the oc-casion. Our insitute had won the First prize at Alchiranga(the IIT Guwahati Cultural Festival) and some of the se-lect events were showcased during the Cultural Nite.One of the most sought-after event was the FashionShow which added special charm to the Cultural Nite.

what has changed????Well... a lot of things have changed....We have now become a national institute totally under the control of the central governmentWe are now a deemed university and frame syllabus and award degrees ourselvesWe now have an all india test called AIEEE for admitting studentsThe marking system is dying out... being replaced by the CGPA (Grading) systemA massive renovation of the entire college is in progressThe college facilities are being upgradedWe plan to start post graduate programmes from this year onwardsAnd lots more........

and what has NOT changed????Well... It is the spirit of being a Rexian or Nitian...We still have the same masti that you hadDo the same things that you didStudy the same way that you didAnd Hope to survive in this world the same way as you do

After all, we are all of the same BRAND !!!!Let us keep up the Spirit of
