Athletic Department Career Pathing Program

Freshman YearYou’ll identify the skills you alreadyhave and begin to look at classes andcourses of study that connect with them.You’ll talk about what you want to doand how to get there.

Sophomore YearYou utilize skills that match with careerchoices. Academic majors and careertracks are researched. Possible intern-ships, part-time jobs and summer jobsare reviewed during the year.

Junior YearNow, you do research on actualcareers and potential employers.Resume writing and job interview skillscontinue to be developed. The time hascome to consider doing internships togain practical job experience. This‘hands-on’ experience is crucial toselecting the right career and learningwhat skills you have that are mosteffective. This is the way to startdetermining your position out of collegeor whether you intend to go ontograduate school. Additional part-timejobs are available during the schoolyear.

Senior YearCountdown to graduation. Make sureyou participate in an internship in yourfield of interest. It is possible that youcan find a sponsoring professor withinyour academic major to receive credittowards your UCLA degree. Yourresume should be polished. Videotapesare used to fine-tune your interviewskills. Consult the Career Center to signup for interviews with various compa-nies. Almost 1000 interviews are heldannually on campus.

As a participant of the Career Pathingprogram, you’re part of a special familyat the Career Center. Counselors arealways available to deal with individualconcerns, answer questions and just tolisten. Career Pathing for student-athletes will guide you in effectivelyusing your skills and help you get intouch with new ones. The opportunitiesare there for you to find the positionyou want after graduating from UCLAor being placed into a top graduateprogram in your field of interest.

Seminars for Career Pathing are held atleast once a quarter at times whichdon't conflict with class or practice. Thepoint of each meeting is action. You’lllearn by doing and gain valuable futureknowledge.

The four-year career pathing programgoes by the following sequence:

Each quarter the Athletic Departmentand the Career Center hold careerdevelopment seminars for student-athletes.Developing a resume, applying tograduate school, and mastering interviewtechniques are among the topics present-ed. Former UCLA student-athletes whohave found success in a variety ofbusiness and professional fields are guestspeakers at these seminars.

UCLA’s facility is perhaps the largest and most successful in the nation. It is recognized for having thecountry’s best placement rate for students in full-time, part-time and internship opportunities. UCLA hasswitched from the Monster JobTrak System to Bruin View to provide even more chances for students inthe job market. That is why UCLA is #1.

UCLA outgrew its old location. The expanded Career Center location now has two floors of services,including what is considered as the best career research library in the nation. Besides the library andnumerous computers with access to Bruin View, the Career Center has many interview rooms foremployers. Almost 1000 companies from around the world come yearly to UCLA to discuss future jobpositions with Bruin students.

77 “Business Week” magazine named the UCLA Career Center as “Best in the Nation.” One out of every 170Californians has a degree from UCLA.

Pride in Being a UCLA Student-Athlete

Every UCLA student-athlete, whether he/she is on fullscholarship, partial scholarship, academic scholarship,financial aid or just walking on to one of UCLA’s 22intercollegiate sport teams should feel an intense pride inbeing part of such an elite and successful academic andathletic university.

What we believe is most important is that you support yourfellow student-athletes both when they are competing and inthe other academic aspects of attending UCLA. This can bedone through free student-athlete attendance at homeathletic events outside of your sport, being supportive inacademic review sessions before midterms or final examsor in general when you come into contact with otherstudent-athletes such as at academic counseling, the trainingroom, locker room or strength and conditioning center.

Everyone is part of the same UCLA “team” that has theopportunity to excel both academically and athletically,regardless of your sport. Listed below are some facts andfigures to give you great pride about UCLA’s overall accom-plishments and recognition in 10 specific areas. We believethese statistics/facts cannot be matched by any other collegethroughout the 20th century and now into the new millennium.

Baron Davis was a “lottery pick” in the 1999 NBA Draft and a 2002and 2004 NBA All-Star

UCLA has more current professional athletes in sports suchas football, basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis andbeach volleyball than any other college in the nation.

UCLA’s professional athletes are paid more money over-all than pro athletes from any other school in the countryto both compete in their sports and also to participate in

promotion and public relation activities around those sports.

Since the 1972 games, UCLA has produced more Olym-pians and Olympic Medalists than any other college in thenation.

Almost 50% of UCLA’s Olympic participants have wonmedals, more than any other university in the nation. IfUCLA was its own country counting the 1984, 88, 92,

96, 2000 and 04 Olympic Games, Bruin athletes would rankamong the top 5 countries in the overall gold medals. UCLA’spresent and former student-athletes have won 73 gold medalssince 1984.

Now into the new Millennium, UCLA has still won moreNCAA Team Titles than any other university. In fact, UCLAwon a NCAA leading 11 titles between fall 2002 and

spring 2005. UCLA won a record 51 NCAA titles in the last 30years of the 20th century. UCLA is the only university founded inthe 20th century that is among the top colleges in producing na-tional championships and taking academic honors.

UCLA has produced almost twice as many #1 overallathletic program awards than any other university inthe nation. In fact, the UCLA men have won a record

11 times and the UCLA women a record 10 times when theawards were separate. The first time it was combined, UCLAwas the national winner for men’s and women’s sports. UCLAis one of only two universities to finish in the top 6 every yearof the Director’s Cup.

UCLA is #1 nationally on the Bruin View System inreceiving and then placing students in full-time andpart-time jobs, plus internships. The average UCLA

Graduate now earns $77,500, which ranks among the na-tional leaders among colleges.
