DBS Library Service

Introduction Welcome to DBS Library. The Library staff looks forward to assisting you with your information enquiries. DBS Library comprises an Undergraduate Library at Aungier Street and a Postgraduate/Law Library at Dame Street. The Library at Dame Street also contains extensive psychoanalysis, psychology and counselling resources. DBS Library service employs 12 full-time library staff and 7 part-time staff. The majority of Library staff have professional library qualifications and/or significant library experience and are therefore highly experienced at dealing with the type of information enquiries that you have.

Where are the Libraries located? The Undergraduate Library is located on the second floor of the Aungier Street building. The Postgraduate/Law Library is located on the third floor of the Dame Street building (a door code 5371 is required to access this Library). Maps indicating Library locations are located on the Library Website.

What do the Library collections contain? Library collections encompass the arts, business and law. They include:

- more than 50,000 books - more than 1,000 DVDs - 196 print journals - 45,000 e-journals, - an extensive portfolio of online databases - an extensive e-book collection

Library Opening Hours The following opening hours apply during term-time (including all reading weeks):

How do I contact the Library? Each Library site has a dedicated information point where staff can assist you with your enquiries. You can also contact Library staff by phone, email or via the ‘Ask a Librarian’ instant messaging service available on the Library website homepage that enables you to chat live with Library staff via the Library Website. You can also follow Library developments via the Student Blog, Facebook and Twitter, links to which are provided on the Library Website. How do I locate books in the Library? Books in the Library are arranged on the shelves by number (following the Dewey classification). Books on the same topic are all shelved at the same number. All the information needed to locate an item in the Library can be found on the Library Catalogue which you can access via the Library Website.

When using the catalogue users should take note of the following information:

- Location: The library site at which the item is located, e.g. Dame Street - Shelved at: This is the item’s class number, i.e. where it is shelved - Status: This tells you if the book is on loan or available in the Library - Quick Response Code (QR Code): The QR Code on each book record contains the author,

title and shelfmark ( = class number) of the book and this information can then be stored directly on your smartphone to aid retrieval of the book on the shelf when you come next to the Library. NB: Instructions for using quick response codes are available on the Library catalogue and from the Library guides in the Library and under the Research Skills section on the website.

What computing facilities are available in the Library? PCs There are 25 PCs at Aungier Street Library, 8 PCs at Dame Street. All computers are connected to the Internet. These computers also have software such as Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point), SPSS 17.0 (quantitative research software), QSRNvivo7 (qualitative research software), SniffyLite – the virtual rat (software program that gives students a virtual laboratory experience), Sage Accounts 2007 (business accounting management system), TASBook2 (business accounting management system) and more. Each Library has a wireless network for students wishing to use their laptops.

Wireless network You can access DBS wireless network via your laptop. To identify yourself on the network, you need to use your PC login details (see previous paragraph).

How to use PCs in the Library The first time you login to PCs in the Library your login details are: your alumni number both as username and password. Then, when logged in, we recommend that you change your password for one of your own choice. To do so, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select the ‘change password’ option. From then on, your login details for Library PCs will be: - username: alumni number - password: password of your choice

How do I access Electronic Resources in the library? Please see the appendix for the complete list of Library databases. While in the Library, you have access to the entire Library online database portfolio via the ‘Search electronic resources’ tool or via the ‘e-Library’ page (as shown next)

Printing and photocopying facilities in the libraries

Printing/photocopying system Papercut is the Library’s printing and photocopying management system. You must top up your virtual print/photocopy account to be able to use the facilities. To top up your account, you can buy a Papercut tokens for €3.00, €5.00 or €10.00 at the Library information points and then top up your virtual account via a PC or your laptop by logging in to your Papercut account using the same login as for PCs/Moodle. Guides for managing your print/photocopy account are available in the Library and online. - Black & White printing/photocopying is €0.07 per page - Colour printing/photocopying is €0.25 per page

Printing There are three printers in Aungier Street and one in Dame Street and each computer is connected to a printer. All printers in Aungier Street and Dame Street libraries provide high quality colour (€0.25 per page) and black and white prints (€0.07 per page). Photocopying There are two photocopiers at Aungier Street and two at Dame Street. Photocopiers in Aungier Street and Dame Street libraries provide high quality colour and/or black and white photocopies.

Can I pay purchase print/photocopy credit by laser or credit card? It is possible to purchase photocopying tokens etc. by credit card or laser card in the library or over the phone.

Is there any audiovisual software for users with disabilities available in the Library? The following resources are available in the Library for students with disabilities:

- Freemind: mind-mapping tool which could be useful for those with learning difficulties such as dyslexia as well as those who like to visualize their thoughts

- Virtual Magnifier: a screen magnification tool designed for the visually impaired and others who need to magnify parts of the screen.

- Read Please: all purpose text-to-speech software that reads out loud any text you can see on screen.

- Web Anyware: reads webpages to you. - Library catalogue (Heritage) allows you to adjust the font size - Dawsonera eBook collection offers text to speech functionality using the Adobe Reader 'Read

Out Loud' function. - Ebsco databases also offers text to speech functionality.

Does the Library offer support with essay writing, referencing and avoiding plagiarism? The Library employs a dedicated information skills Librarian who provides classes in these and other areas. Alumni members are very welcome to attend these classes. To see the full range of classes conducted by the Information Skills, please consult the ‘research skills’ section of the Library website and you can also register online for a class.

How can I learn more about using the Library? - Library Guides: guides on how to use various Library resources as well as guides on essay

writing, referencing, avoiding plagiarism, conducting a literature review, etc. are available on the Library website and in hardcopy in the Library.

- Information Points: Each library has an Information point that is manned by professional staff who are there to help you get the most from the Library resources and facilities. Please feel free to approach the desk with any Library query… big or small. Alternatively you can phone, email or instant message the Library.

- Ask a Librarian instant messaging: this is available via the Library website. Just type in your question and a member of the library staff will message you back straight away.

Library newsletter – Alumni corner/Alumni profile Each month DBS Library releases its newsletter with useful tips and pieces of news about the Library services and DBS in general. There is a dedicated Alumni corner with tips to help your work and/or study and an Alumni profile section where you can tell us about your success story. Library Regulations The following is a brief overview of library regulations. Please ensure you are familiar with all rules and regulations, especially in relation to overdue material and accumulated fines. A leaflet detailing all regulations is available in the Library.

- Users of the Library and its facilities must be in possession of a valid Library card issued by the Library.

- The Library is a study area. Users should not disturb or inconvenience others. - Mobile phones must be powered off before entering the library. If your mobile cannot be

powered off, it should be set to silent mode. The first violation of this regulation will see a warning placed on the student’s record. A fine of €5.00 will be incurred for subsequent violations.

- Food and drink is strictly prohibited in the Library and will be confiscated by staff. - Desks may not be reserved for others. - Library users are not permitted to act in an aggressive or abusive manner to fellow Library users

or Library staff. It is the responsibility of the individual to consult and familiarise themselves with the rules and regulations of this service prior to using the Library. Library regulations are available on the Library Website and in print in the Library.

Information for DBS Alumni Borrowers How do I access Electronic Resources from outside the library? From your laptop, from home or your office you can access EBSCO Academic Search Alumni Edition and EBSCO Business Source Alumni Edition via the membership page (as shown below) Your login details are: - Username: your alumni number - Password: your date of birth in the format dd/mm/yyyy

And you can also access DBS e-book collection (Dawonsera) directly at www.dawsonera.com with the same login details: - Username: your alumni number - Password: your date of birth in the format dd/mm/yyyy

What are my borrowing rights? As an Alumni borrower of the Library you can borrow 4 items at a time, renewable 5 times.

How do I borrow/return Library materials? Materials can be borrowed and returned at the self-issue stations located in the Library. Instructions on how to use these stations are provided at the stations and Library staff can also show you how to use these stations.

How do I renew books? Alumni borrowers are permitted to renew standard loan and week loan books 5 times unless the item is reserved by another Library user. Please note that you cannot renew a book where there is an outstanding fine of €3.00 and above on your Library account. You can renew books by the following methods: - Online via the Library Catalogue using your student number and password (same as your PC and

Moodle login) - By phone with your student number - At the self-issuing stations in the Library - At information points in the Library

How long can I keep Library books for? When you borrow items at the self-issue stations you receive a receipt that indicates when your Library items are due back. The lending category (7-day loan; 3-day loan) is also displayed on the spine of the item.

Can I borrow videos or DVDs? The Library at Aungier Street has a collection of DVDs and videos that may be borrowed overnight or viewed in the Library. To retrieve these materials: search the Library Catalogue using the following keywords: DVD COLLECTION to see a list of all DVDs and VIDEO COLLECTION to see a list of all videos.

Can I access my library account online? Yes. You can use the same login as for PC (see paragraph above) to manage your Library account online via the Library online catalogue, for example to reserve and renew items and to view your library account. If your login details do not work, you can contact DBS IT department via the online helpform to have them reset. Can I pay a fine by credit by laser or credit card? It is possible to pay a fine by credit card or laser card in the library or over the phone.
