Alvadore Library – Fire Station
Parking Lot How things happen in Alvadore… Claudia Doiel,
Lions President was thinking we needed a place for
folks to get a book when the library was closed. A
Little Free Library seemed like the answer, she talked
to Karen Lord and she suggested Mike Finley could
make one and Viola, Mike preformed. Below
pictures are the new Alvadore library hours sign, the
new free library along with Ramona Jirkovsky,
volunteer and manager of the library. Currently we
have 4 additional volunteers Trevor Anderson, Mary

Decker’s Red Eagle Appaloosas est. 1992
years over 300 purebred Appaloosas have been registered
with DREA prefix, designating Decker’s Red Eagle Appaloosas
as their breeder. Helping to keep this wonderful breed
thriving has been very satisfying, but extremely challenging.
Understanding equine genetics is four times more difficult
than either people or dogs. Horses have twice as many pairs
of chromosomes, so predicting the outcome of a mating has
four times as many possibilities. Milton believes in tilting at
windmills.
After a lifelong love of horses, Milton finally started breeding purebred Appaloosas in 1992. A family
project, wife Mary, three daughters, Donna, Molly, and Jill, as well as son, Ellis all were involved. Mary and
Milton, over the next ten years, traveled the western US, learning from other breeders and selecting
breeding stock from the purest, by blood Foundation bred Appaloosas. This breed is extremely versatile
and is great for super disposition, endurance, good stock horse, long lived, great athleticism, trustworthy
on the trail, as well as their very colorful coat patterns. The three Decker daughters rode Appaloosas on
Oregon-Washington competitive Drill team for eight years. Decker’s found many of the mainstream
breeders had crossed Appaloosas with Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds. However, they learned that
some people, wanted the purebred, especially like-minded US breeders as well as breeders around the
world. Soon they were sending horses to Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom,
Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and more recently starter herds to Chile and Slovakia. Over the last 26

Rene and Bobby Bell want to express a huge heart felt thanks for all those that stopped and helped with the fire on Clearlake Rd last Sunday 11/11/2018. They could not have gotten their mother to safety with out all the selfless neighbors. They don't have the names of the Good Samaritans, but it is very important they know their efforts have deeply touched the family. Corlyss Bell passed this morning in Portland as a result of burns and smoke inhalation. Hug your loved ones.

Rene and Bobby Bell want to express a huge heartfelt thanks
for all those that stopped and helped with the home fire on

We need help – With a motto of “We serve” Alvadore Lions last month
arranged for hearing aids for a lady who couldn’t afford them. We recently
purchased glasses for another. The Alvadore Community Library (and the new
“Little Free Library”) are supported by us. We pay the bills by holding events, e.g.,
sponsoring the bazaar, pancake breakfasts, chicken barbecues. Please email
[email protected] for information if you’re interested in joining – or are
willing to give us a helping hand with an event.
Shoeboxes for Seniors Alvadore Lions are again sponsoring a Shoebox
Christmas project, filling shoeboxes with gifts for area people in need. If you have
shoeboxes to donate, they can be left at the library or in a covered area at the

THE BIG ONE Community Meeting – January 8th “It’s not a matter of IF, but
WHEN,” “Everything West of I-5 will be toast” You have heard these statements regarding
the earthquake and tsunami that is predicted to strike the Oregon coast. The impending
event is expected to mimic the 2011 disaster in Japan. 700 miles of the West Coast rests
upon Cascadia subduction zone which has a long history of devastating events.
When will The Big One happen? Great questions! However, there is a greater question. Do you have a
plan? Do you know how to minimize the risk of injury when your surroundings are crashing around you?
Will you be able to survive 72 hours with little or no communication, utilities or services? Do you know
the best method for contacting family and friends when the phone systems are jammed?
Preparedness questions and concerns will be addressed in a community meeting to be held at
Alvadore Christian Church Tuesday Jan 8th 2019 at 7pm. Please join us for this opportunity to be
informed and ready.

Halloween Carnival 2018
We had a great turnout and lots of fun. A big thank you to the volunteers that did everything
form delivering flyers to cleaning up at the end.
A special thanks to Lane Fire Authority for allowing us the use of the station and to Conor Irving
for his years of support. As well as to the first responder volunteers The Crocker’s who made
cotton candy and Popcorn all evening and the kitchen staff. Thanks to the board members
Danell and Cheryl, and to Dianna Irving and Pamela Ramos who have worked with me for 21
years. Without them, this carnival would not have celebrated 43 years. Volunteers: Becky,

Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My… No wait, Cougars, Bears and Coyotes…
The Clearlake Estates neighborhood group released this information to neighbors in October. In
the last couple of months there have been several sitings of bear, cougar and coyote in
Clearlake Estates. The cougar sightings became very disturbing when a neighbor’s horse was
attacked. After the horse was examined by a veterinarian, it was their opinion the wounds were
from a cougar. Several residences reported hearing a “chirping” noise, a common way for
cougars to communicate. Two juvenile cougars were killed but a larger cougar got away in the
Alvadore area. The trapper found evidence of bear, cougar and coyote in Clearlake Estates.
Cougars have a 50+ mile radius hunting ground, and there have also been several reports of
cougar attacks in the Elmira area. The Elmira attacks include sheep, goats, horses and domestic
dogs. I spoke with an OSP trooper from our local office, he said the fires we have had in our area
this season have brought predators in closer, as well as the cougar population increasing.
Springfield has also had an increase in sightings. Bears have also been an issue in Clearlake
Estates. The neighbors living near the canal have lost a dozen or more fowl, including chickens,
geese and turkeys. There is bear scat, claw scratching on the trees, and evidence a bear tried
to break into one of the barns. Another neighbor lost his entire chicken coup of approximately
12 chickens, possibly killed by a coyote. The Clearlake estates HIA sent out an emergency
newsletter to all neighbors advising of the predator danger.
